and the one thing that Showtime had to learn is takedown grappling defense
because in that fight against Guida grinded it out against him for the win.
I m thinking Melendez's training camp was to do the same thing against Pettis. In that first rd, Melendez dominated with embracing the grind but Showtime was very patient and didn't get frustrated. He was able to avoid the takedown and caught El Nino with a sweet precise guillotine

He got that Wheaties box for a reason, and was styling on muthafuckas years ago in the WEC (2008/2009 or so, and that all-time classic with Ben in Dec. 2015 to cap WEC 53, their final event). With Melendez ... mad props on his career as a whole. You name the organization ... he's pretty much fought for them (UFC, Pride, Strikeforce, Rumble on the Rock, Shooto, WEC). Big fan of both Pettis & Melendez, and wish to see them for many years moving forward into the UFC 200s and beyond ...

Yeah, these guys kind of suck each other into autopilot sometimes and I think their gameplans leave for a minute in the rounds. Their power cancels each other out a little. Someones gonna need a game changing strike.

I don't think that late takedown with no damage should have won Big Rigg that first round...but it doesn't matter if Robbie wins the last two on points..he's in sparring mode right now..not feed the kids mode..he better wake he fuck up.

Some people were speculating on the UG that he may have broken his hand in the 1st. Also, his schedule has been hectic this year (whereas Hendricks has been off since March).

i honestly think lawler was just trying to pace himself the whole time, but almost to his detriment tho. I know it's part of the strategy but I couldn't stand that Hendricks kept trying to go for the take down over and over again..

Yeah they basically did this to setup the 3rd fight for the trilogy. Combine this with CM Punk's announcement, Dana White is really trying to sell tickets/ppvs' at any costs at this point. No way Lawler won 3 rounds.
