The reason I'm bringing up the house in virginia angle is because in the mid 80s people were catching that as well and drug users were just as likely to contract it by being recklessly careless.

That's good point and I agree. If they do give Mel a happy ending, I could see it being something a "flash forward" of her overcoming years even decades of addiction.

Yeah maybe a fast forward to maybe the late 90s to the mid 2000s where she is some sort of drug prevention advocate giving her testimony. However I agree on your last statement and the crack addicted and hiv angle would be very dark but it will bring to light the reality of how destructive both the drug war and hiv was on the black community and on the black female in particular. I am hoping she don't end up like Wanda because I predict a tragic demise for Wanda because she is so far gone she will easily become a liability that can be used against Franklin.

I honestly would prefer to see Mel prostituting, contracting diseases, becoming homeless and ultimately OD'ing. Crack wasn't a pretty picture and I want them to stay close to the real life impact. Honestly speaking, the majority of the stories ended that way vs rehab and positive lectures.
I wish that wasn't the case, but since it was, the story should reflect just how ugly that epidemic became IMO. I've heard stories of mothers pimping out their children over the weekend to the dope man, so this is still not as bad as it could be.

Question: When they find Andre (the cop) will they believe that he committed Suicide (possibly because of being suspended and Mel's crack addiction) or will they think he was Murdered (Mel thinks that Franklin killed her father)?
I think before it gets there the other cop will put it on the cia before it gets back to franklin and just leave it a suicide.
You have to ask the LA fam. All I am saying is that South Central ain't the only community in greater Los Angeles. Sometimes if a cop has no connection to the community they work in it is best to live elsewhere.

The I.E. (Inland Empire) - Riverside, San Bernardino, Moreno Valley, Perris, Rialto, Fontana etc. It's an area that begins about 45 miles east of L.A.
I was curious because it seems like everyone Black lived or lives in South Central. From the outside you never hear of other areas that Blacks lived in. I know we out there but just was curious.

Difference is this a legit competitor. Shows like Power never were. This show has Oscar level writing from a man who has legit classics under his belt and the acting is solid. You dudes act the Wire was untouchable.Every couple of years:

Power for unbelievable because of terrible writing and acting. The Wire is centered around an area not a character. Everything “classic” from characters to events came from that hood. Not one of the characters from the other aspects are classic besides Clay Davis saying sheeeeeeeeeit. Most Wire fans can’t name 5 of the main characters from season 2 on the docks. Nearly all the main hood characters lived the whole show until they started killing people off in the last season that’s not a coincidence they needed them.
Snowfall seemed to fine with Franklin being in jail and when they were focusing on Lucia and her family.
Not about better but it’s damn sure looking like good competition.
Gang Culture
As for the gang culture aspect... may not be something they touch on directly but the element is clearly there in the show. You can pretty much see who are gang member-esk by how they are depicted. Man-boy, Leon, etc... Something that may go unnoticed but since the 80's when it comes to the depiction of Gang's in movies film makers walk a fine line where a lot of times don't directly attribute shit to bloods and crips. They will just allude to it with flags and colors but don't directly say it. Including Boyz in the Hood and Menace.... I get the line you want to tell a story without direct attribution if it is not a real life story you are re-telling. Some people may look at like talking around it but why should it matter if we all know. Yes it does matter and I do appreciate it. It's similar to blocking out gang signs in music videos when they throwing up sets in hand gestures. It seems little but it does matter. How far you go in displaying stuff does make difference but you also don't want to loose the story telling in the art. So it's the fine line they walk up to when they can.
Comparisons to the Wire:
Any show about the hood and drugs automatically gets this Wire comparison thrown out. Yall really need to stop. As soon as Power came out the gate that is what people did. These shows have different premises. The Wire was an examination of several different aspects from touching on the Hood , the drug game, the import of drugs, politics, teenage aspect of the hood and the news industry(focus on disappearing news papers). It actually examines these things and displays stories through that from head to toe.
Power is story about kingpin types and drug game. It's entertainment and serves its purpose. i like it and realize it is what it is... rather entertaining...

So, I seriously binged almost three seasons in 2 days. It’s an interesting take on a series of crimes that fuhked up black communities until today. Community organizers mark problems by saying they’re pre or post crack, particularly violence among dealers. My favorite character was Claudia. Sorry to see her go.
At first I was surprised by all the deaths of those that could have ended it with Franklin and his gang. And even surprised by Fraklin being untouched with the cops and feds. Then I realized how this is a reenactment of actual events. The crack epidemic is going to happen. This is why every time a cop or fed or kingpin gets in the way, they are dealt with.
This is fate. Whether It is Andre, the double agent undercover fed woman Soledad, Reed's girl, the nightclub crazy Cartel boss Rigo, or anybody else. Nobody is stopping this epidemic from happening. Hell even the babydaddy of the woman that was suppose to live in Gustavo's stash house got taken out.
