HBO's True Detective Premiers tonight

Ok ending but I felt like they over-explained. I knew that little girl was Julia's daughter when she bumped into Purple...

Yea but THEY don't know. They just feel something is off. That's kind of the entire thing. At every turn in the case, when something came up it got explained and then "closed" and then we find out there's more to it.
They find one eye, he gives them "closure" and they assumed its all there is to it for real this time. BUT WAIT there's more.

2 things
Having one eyed guy explain everything was kind of lazy and Hayes' wife coming to him in his mind and explaining the girl being alive was weak imo
The series is so tightly written why use those cop out techniques

His wife is just him. It's not her.
Entire series he joked about not reading her book when she was alive but going through it now.
He always thought she didn't add value to the case.
HE was the police officer SHE was just a writer.
And then it turns out that he literally read her book to figure out the case.
Even the TRUE ending which is that she's still alive.
It's the central theme and biggest regret of his.
Every single time he goes it alone, shit gets fucked up. When he's stubborn and feels he knows best, he only ever gets it HALF right. If he worked together with the ones who loved him he would have solved the case

If he had Not run off to murder the cop that helped cover it up and instead followed him, they could have found her.
If he had included his WIFE in the investigation privately, he would have found July... she went there in 95' or so or whenever the 90's version of them was back on the case and she was writing the 2nd book... remember?
"Mary June" was still there. The nuns had already instructed people to leave her be and to tell them she had left... by that time she was ALREADY helping them out
If he had partnered with his wife he could have found her.
but he didnt

He didn't follow up after his meeting with Hoyt for the sake of his family.
The son knows something is up with that address because he had it written down but claimed he was just lost and ended up there.
Like how they left dude to deal with his own demons for his major role in everything.
Expected the conclusion to be a little more complex though

I think Wayne finding June gave him closure; especially finding her happy with family. As they eluded to in the middle of the season, there was a lot more to the kidnapping than just the Hoyts. It was something too big for both of them to take on alone.

If he took it any further from that point and revealed that she was alive, he would endanger both her and her family. That's the reason her death was faked in the first place.

His wife in his dream sequence said it was the beginning, there was more to it, that it continues. Maybe that's why the son kept the address. Maybe he goes forward with that white girl reporter. When I seen his 2 grandkids riding off on them bikes, I knew it would trigger something in him.

yeah i kinds felt the same way... too much build up to get a couple of 5 min explanations

Actually I think Purple does know. Just like he knew about that room in the abandoned home 25 years ago but refused to say anything to his partner.

He knows that's Julie but instead of telling his son what he discovered, he blames his dementia. It's a pattern

thanks @BenQ

Man fuck this. This is not a movie with time constraints that have to be met. These scenes should have been worked in over the course of the season. PERIOD.

We shouldn't have to read a got damn IG post from Pizzolatto to get a resolution. smh

Also, if there's nothing that serious about the divide between Hyaes and Becca, why was it made to feel like there was a key part to the story line based on it? That's the way it felt to ME... like it was going to tie in with a Amelia's death or something.

Anyways, what we also found out is that Roland got hands :itsawrap:

Funny how they could tie in an explanation for Rolands love of stay dogs but they was mum on Amelias death.... IMO the finale was botched ... one thing I loved about " True detective" as a series was their edge of your seat climax in finales ... I kept waiting and waiting ... it was shame for such a wonderful series to end with a wimper! With all that said masterful acting ....

Just got to episode 5....so far I really like this season... Damn... Kicking myself for getting to it late, but kind of not because I can bing it...

and Amelia.... The OG Jeffrey Wright aka Peeples had him a true beauty there...her voice....

Dorf out there doing a pretty good job as well....

The shoot out at the native's house... Eeek,

That mfkr knew there was no turning back after they came after him..... He went out taking a bunch of them with him.

I haven't read recent comments but I'm looking forward to the next few episodes

the book being on the page about the boy when it fell then he sees his wife. I would have liked a little foreshadowing in an earlier episode about the crush/boy

Ali and Dorf both need Emmys for these performances
all this

There were a lot of "oh shit" moments they past 3 episodes or so that felt like they were building up to an "oh shit" finale, especially when he got in the car at the end of the last week with Michael Rooker. I just knew the 1 and a half finale was gonna be like :eek2:...

This definitely didn't end the way I thought it would and it took me a while to process how I felt about that but I'm alright with this ending. The storytelling was unconventional from the start with the three timelines running concurrently so it turns out we got the resolution a lot earlier than we realized. I said a few episodes ago that I almost didn't even care about the mystery or the missing girl because I was enjoying the way these relationships were playing out so authentically.

Turns out that was the point all along.

That next to last shot on the porch with Wayne surrounded by Roland and his family -- turns out he had what he was looking for the whole time. It wasn't about the mystery at all. It was about Wayne coming to peace about the choice he made years ago to choose his family over the job and making things right with his partner who he left. He was a true alpha male... a true detective like Roland tried to tell him and he gave that up in his prime to choose his woman and then again in 1990 to save his marriage and take care of his family.

That's some deep stuff if you really think about it.

Great post.

Great ending. Loved to see the flashbacks and the healing between Wayne and Roland. That was a true heartfelt hug they had at the end. And I especially liked how we saw how Roland became a dog lover

They both were the same yet different. Wayne chose his wife and family, Roland was a real one who stuck his neck out for his partner (as well as the kids dad) and I’m glad they were able to come back together in the end.

Man after that hug + the music,I thought he was going to blow his own brains out.

I wonder if they are going to have a season where all the characters meet up to solve the child kidnapping ring.

am i the only one that thought his wife might have something to do with this shit LOL

and did they ever say how hie wife died?
A lot of people were suspicious of her.
I think they said something earlier in the series about her passing but they didn't give details

For some reason I knew it was going to end like this or somewhat like this in where they just get all the information (one-eyed man tells what happens)

I wish they would of left us with some type of cliff-hanger that could lead to a possible continuation to season 4 or maybe when Henry gets the address from Purple he crumbles it up and puts it in a pile with a bunch of other crumble papers (addresses). Indicating that he solved this before (numerous times) but because of his dementia everyone just let's him play it out...like some Shutters Island shit
