Get rid of cable - cordcutters 2013 strategy guide

COMMENTS FROM A USER:
The concept is simple. Laptops and WiFi routers broadcast their total energy every direction at 360 degrees. But if you know where the signal comes from why not take all that wasted energy and just broadcast in the direction of where you want it. That is what this directional antenna is all about.

Once you understand how to tell where the signal is coming from this gadget is designed to resolve the signal even better and send/receive your laptop signal only in/from the direction it needs to go. Therefore, you have much better range than a built-in laptop antenna.

There are usually a few clueless who can't get this gadget to work no matter how simplistic things are. I suspect the bad reviews here were from a guy who has issues with his USB port. The other guy who bought this product to connect to just one location doesn't say whether he tested it at other places too. That guy was not fair to these reviews since he wanted it just for one location and when it was not satisfactory he rates it poorly and sends it back. He does not give any details at all about the situation.

Anyway, I have had my unit for one year and it is fantastic. My new laptop detects about 8 signals looking down on about 50 houses because I live on a hill. Without the antenna it is not possible to connect to any of the signals. But when I use this gadget, I get about 30 signals that pop up. Two of the signals are unprotected so I can log in. I get 84% signal connecting to a house that is 400 feet away according to Google earth and the connection is really FAST. I cant tell how far the other signals are because they are secured and I would not be able to report on the connection quality.

Yesterday I tried the antenna from the 4th floor of a hospital. Without it I could see 7 hospital networks, all secured. With it I could see a total of 25 and could connect my laptop for my friend in a hospital bed so he could do his mail.

I could not recommend this product more. You never know when this thing will come in handy.

The XMBC system is real buggy. But obviously give you more access to things in one software platform than anything else I know of.

I'm really thinking about getting the rasp pi, But man it looks really slow and crashes quite a bit.

Has anyone been using that can confirm?

YOU BETTER WAIT TILL THIS IS RELEASED IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS

do any of yawl miss cable?

I don't, when Idid have cable, all I did was channel surf, and almost always ended up watching PBS or some other educational channel if a game wasn't on. Now, I only watch what I want, and spend less time and money in front of the idiot box. Less is more sometimes. Fuck channel surfing.

Try it out on yo pc first...to get the feel of it...There are some known bugs...but the staff at XBMC be on point when it comes to fixes:yes:

Yes the program runs slower on Raspberry Pi....but it WORKS
there are work-arounds to speed up the RPI (overclocking...running diffrent OS...etc)

but you still download all the good cable shows like breaking bad and game of thrones right?

And exactly what does that have to do with cutting cable

Fuck outta here :hmm:
just saying, cats on here talking how cable sucks yet download all the cable shows. Cable doesn't suck its just not worth what the monopolies want to charge

I'm tired of XBMC. The best plug ins are 3rd party and you have to constantly watch the forums because they change/break all the time. I just want something that plays Netflix, Youtube and my local movies consistently with the openness of XBMC.

I see no one here mentioned Mediaportal. I'm gonna put it on my box this weekend and fuck around with it.

Things to be aware of:

Atom processors don't do HD Netflix or 10bit Anime. It'll turn the movie into a slide show. Get something beefier.

Powerline adapters aren't as reliable as Coax to Ethernet adapters.

Real shit...if I can get a legit answer or solution to Live 1080p sports....I will cut my shit off..

This is about the only thing stopping me as well from saying fuck it to cable.
I'm too much of a sports fan.
I know I could watch all the ESPN games online, but how do you watch games on TNT or Big Ten Network, etc?

Yeah, and....I still grab first run movies when screeners drop. What's your point? That I shouldn't watch any cable shows since I refuse to pay for cable.

tried living w/o comcast when i moved into my new place. long story short. im back with comcast after 6mo. this shyt is a hassle. and its difficult to entertain when you gotta depend on a service thats homebrewed and not stable
