For the record, firstrowsports has a plugin through playon and you can watch it on roku. I used it to watch games every week last year. They also have a plugin for vipbox.tv, which also includes ESPN, ESPNU and NFL Network. Also there's an espn channel to where you can watch live games on ESPN 360. I'm telling you, with playon cable is an after thought.

RESPECT FAM thanks a ton

That's the kicker. I can get Firstrowsports on everything but a set top box. Unless it has chrome and allows the extensions, you can't do it.

In the meantime..I have bunch of older laptops with Win7. Hook them up to the VGA port, close the lid and set it under the tv. They don't have blue ray but still play bootleg DVDs so fuck it. Get a keyboard with a built in pad.

There is your low budget media center. They sell small form factor computers from Zotac like the ZBox that tucks into a home theater setup nice. I use laptops because they come in handy and even laptops from 2008 can keep up with the stream sites.

I see pay per view fights on my phone thanks to firstrow.

I have that logitech keyboard. It's an excellent choice for a media pc.

Are there HD alternatives for sports? The quality on these streams are all pretty terrible

I just change channels on firstrowsports but they seem to be the most on point. Mind you some of this stuff has to be compressed since it's being uploaded from a DVR so you can't expect broadcast quality off the bat.

5 star post!

For those with young kids, who do you get around kid entertainment without cable? My wife has been telling me to cut the cord but anytime I think of the kids I stop.
Personally, all I watch are playoff sports and HBO series GOT and TB

The quality on the streams is dependent upon your pc processor. I had plenty of streams that were near HD quality. And when its free to tell you the truth i'm not going to care about the marginal difference.

Not true.

So back to the question HD sports streaming?

How the fuck can you tell me it's not true when there are 15+ streams for every single game every week with different hosts?:lol: And when you're streaming through roku, the quality IS dependent upon your processor. LOL @ cats complaining thinking there's gonna be 1080p streams, good luck with that.

im in dc. competition will do that every time.

in 2009 i was paying about $100/mo for tv and internet

right now that same package is $70/mo cept they added more channels and its more than double the bandwidth than i was getting back then.

i think its like that in markets where fios or at least 1 other carrier has gained a strong following.

by the way.. if u have comcast and ur not tied into a long term contract and want to reduce ur cable bill but dont want to leave cable completely... just call in and tell them ur interested in cancelling cable service. they will forward u to the winback department or whatever its called and they will make u an offer thats like 50% of your current cable bill. they may ask for a 2 yr commitment but if u dont plan on leaving, take the deal. in 2013, i wouldnt sign a 2 yr deal on cable or cell phones tho...

This. Cox gave me something reasonable but they know it's the only option in my building. :hmm:

this shit right here!! Originally had a "triple play" highest internet , HBO and Showtime, HD-DVR and phone for $115, once the promo ended the shit balooned upto $163, told those mofos to cancel the cable and phone after about 45 mins of negotiations got my shit down to $105 minus one of the other set top boxes. . . also i'm with Time Warner (only option in my area....BUT U-verse has been eating them alive nearby!!)

That's cool but it's a huge difference for me and I love HD sports programming. Just wondered if it was available without cable

You are an idiot! The Roku has its own processor etc etc. I don't care about 1080 streams, but the message that the quality of the stream is dependent on processor is BS/partially wrong. It is dependent on your internet speed and your modem speed. A stream will be crap if you have a fast processor and slow internet speed/modem. A stream will be good if you have a slow processor but a fast modem/internet speed.
Fucking google it!

Unless you are using a channel like plex where you have to install their server software on you computer, you don't even need a pc to use the roku beyond activating and registering your device. You have to usually go on line to link a channel like hbogo or netfilx to your player but beyond that all you need is a router. They recommend 10-15 mbps, most folx have way faster speeds. Hardwired devices shouldn't have any problems at all. If you are getting bad streams over wireless, could be wireless interference. Try changing your router channels, move away from cordless phone bases etc....

It doesn't have shit to do with the Roku processor so at least know what you're talking about before throwing out the idiot label. The stream goes through PLAYON, which is a media server on your PC which is determined in quality by your PC'S PROCESSOR. Just shutup. The stream has to go through Playon before it even gets to the damn box.

Clearly you didn't read any of my prior responses.

You're right, I didn't. :) I skimmed most of it, and didn't take note of your posts until the one I quoted. The post you did above this one states you are using playon, and since you need the pc for that like you do plex you are correct that a poor processor could affect your stream quality/speed. It is also true that the roku by itself is capable of 1080 if it is a direct channel through the player and a pc is not required for that. :):):)

so far so good, I have hulu and netflix and I stream my movies from my pc thru mezzmo. havent tried youtube yet.

Thanx for your response. If you (or anyone else) gets a chance, can you set up a youtube playlist with 2-3 30 second or so clips to see if it plays them one after the other automatically or if you have to press play for each clip individually? Also then make it private to see if it can still access the playlists? Pretty please? :please::please::please:
