How did the 49ers do in the draft....
Basically the 49ers are drafting for long term players, & signing free agents for fill-ins.
Overall it was solid.
Seems like we got good value for a few players, but of course we wont know how everything pans out until a few years down the road.
My favorite picks are:
1. RB Carlos Hyde
We trade LaMichael when another teams RB gets hurt during the preseason.
Drafting Hyde means we can ease Lattimore in, everyone can spit caries evenly.
Gore will retire after this year, so going forward, Hyde + Lattimore are a good combo.
Hopefully Hyde can be like Eddy Lacy.
2. C Marcus Martin
I had questions about KillGore at center, before the draft
With the Rams D-line & the Cards/Seahawks defense, we need some beef up front
Other Players:
3. WR Bruce Ellington
He's a good football player, but will we use him correctly?
Will he get lost in the shuffle like LaMichael & Kyle Williams?
4. S Jimmie Ward
Again he's a good football player, but I think we reached a little.
So the plan is to start him at nickel CB for a year or two, cut Bethea or make him backup, then Jimmie Ward takes over as the starting safety?
We will see about this one
Again both Verrett (nickel CB) & Dennard (outside CB) were within reach
We passed up a lot of good talent for Ward, so he better be good
5. ILB Chris Borland
Bowman will be on the PUP list for half the season
Wilhoite will have to fill in for half the season
This is Wilhoite's contract year & he will want to get paid or even start for another team after this year
The new rookie should make a good backup & competition for Nick Moody
Also Patrick Willis seems to be getting nicked/injured every year, so the rook might have to come in for Willis a few games
6. OG Brandon Thomas
He'll go on PUP/IR this year
He'll be good insurance in case we lose Mike Iupati next year
At the very least, Thomas will be an upgrade over Adam Snyder & Johnathan Martin
Barring any major injuries, the team looks pretty solid
I only have a few minor concerns
1. Very minor concern
Who is our 3rd QB?
Right now we just have Kaepernick & Blaine Gabbert as the only two
2. Minor concern
Not very good O-line tackle depth
If Staley or Davis go down, who steps in?
I know Boone can slide over to left tackle, but Adam Snyder & Johnathan Martin are really not that good at all
We do have a few tackles on the practice squad though
3. Somewhat of a major concern
We are paper thin at QUALITY CB depth
Sooooo we go into the season with Brock (1 year starter), Cully (coming off ACL injury & legal problems & a complete knucklehead), & a 1st round rookie?
Behind them we have Cox(cut multiple times from multiple teams), Wright(hes kind of just "eh", & will compete for the backup nickel spot with Cox), Cook(Vikings reject).... and a bunch of mid round/late round rookies
With Aldon Smith & Bowman out probably for half the season, will we be able to generate enough pass rush/pressure, so our CB's are not exposed?
It seems like last year when we had Boldin & then a bunch of scrub WR's
Right now we have 2 good CB's & a bunch of knuckleheads/unknowns/rookies
So we will go into camp with like 10+ CB's & spend valuable time trying to find out who will step up?
Will our starters get enough reps, with having to split time with all these other unknown CB's?
Because they have to be ready to go & gel together from day #1, week #1
Our first 3 weeks we face all pass happy teams (Cowboys, Bears, Cardinals) !!!
Again..... we will see !!!

One good thing about Trent Baalke is that he's trying to think 1 step ahead of the competition
The 49er FO and Scouts get it......its not always about drafting for right now.
Its about drafting for the next couple of years.
While this draft seemed kinda random, when you think about it and upcoming free agents, it was pretty solid.
But we will have to see how many draftees pan out, in a few years.
