Get rid of cable - cordcutters 2013 strategy guide

basically chromecast is shitting on roku now.

if google would let 3rd parties build apps on top of it, it would be over. not sure whats the holdup.

but even as is, i rarely turn on my roku now... well u dont turnit on but u get wht im sayin..

Well, it does look like Roku still does not have support for Youtube, which might be an issue for some. But, the Chromecast does not have as many apps as the Roku. These seem to be the major decision criteria as cost is pretty negligible.

But you know what I was thinking?

Not that everybody necessarily has extra money falling out of their pockets, but shit... since both the Roku and Chromecast are in the $35-$40 range, fuck it, if you really feel that there are features or specific partnerships that each vendor has that the other is missing, just pick up both. You'll only be out $75.

:dunno:

I've been getting by streaming from my Xbox 360, but I am about sick and tired of being held hostage by Microsoft with their Xbox Live fees... I don't really play games too much anymore these days, and I am using it more for streaming. So I am probably going to make the switch to either/both the Roku/Chromecast.

People have apps ready, but Google has to approve them... right now they only let VIPs (Netflix, Hulu, and so on) release apps. The SDK is still in preview. Some people think they are trying to play nice with Hollywood :smh:

Bitcasa, an online backup and storage service, thinks it has a hit on its hands: a way for users to stream their own media directly from Bitcasa online backups, regardless of file format.

Ok so what is the benefit of chromecast over roku? Sell me

Get both. Roku has more support, channels, but remember, they are not the same thing. They compliment each other.

If you want to watch sports streaming sites off your PC, Chromecast is the better option. If you want to use Netflix, Plex, Hulu Plus, in addition to the other multitude of channels and content, Roku all the way.

Again, get both. They are cheap enough and different enough to warrant the purchase.

i can see y hollywood n powers that be might be blocking. shit can get ugly quick.

for instance bitcasa offers 10 gig for free or unlimited storage for $100/yr.
ninjas could put 10,000 hollywood movies in the cloud n stream the fuck outta them.

bitcasa was founded by a brotha btw:cool:. he was recently replaced as ceo for some reason but he developed the app.

What are the options for sports on the PC?

Using XBMC?

Only interested in NBA and NFL at the point.

I know that the answer in in here somewhere, but I guess reading through it on a Sunday morning, it just didn't stick.

Hulu plus is cool with me when it comes to TV shows shits are available right after they air vs Netflix and those old ass TV shows but I pay for both

I use firstrowsports.eu and vipbox.tv. Have a good pop up blocker installed if you use either site.

I have a good popup blocker but still mising out on firstrowsports.co and the ads it puts in the stream. You know the ones that you have to x out. Do you know of a pop-up blocker that stops those?

Playon has it own version of Chromecast now called Playmark.

PlayOn's latest ground-breaking technology, PlayMark, is now available. The PlayMark feature of the PlayOn Browser extension lets you bookmark just about any video from any website right from your browser so you can watch them on your TV. Just select the PlayMark channel in PlayOn to watch virtually any video on your TV.

The possibilities are endless! With PlayMark, you don't need to wait for a new PlayOn channel to watch your favorite online videos on your TV or record them to your PC.

Just ran across Simple.tv and also something called Aeureo or something like that. Might have the name of the second one wrong.

But anyway Simple TV looks pretty interesting. Don't know if it has been mentioned already or not. I haven't scanned all 7 pages. Does anyone have any experience with this Simple TV thing? Read lots of user reviews and it looks pretty decent. There are apparently a few bugs and glitches but mostly thumbs up reviews so far.
