Why Aren't More Young Brothers Into Mathmatics?

i understand your points and agree on a whole but "school" is really for created a well rounded functioning citizen...

discipline, responsibility critical thinking are all involved when these areas of study are PROPERLY taught...

MOST BGOL cats LACK THE DISCIPLINE TO EVEN READ THE RESPONSES ON THIS THREAD BEFORE RESPONDING:lol:

I would never disparage their usefulness...

everything has its place...

learning the arts shouldn't create a legion of American Idol contestants...:D

but appreciating music and sculpture and poetry and literature is essential

Of course office skills are important and SHOULD be taught in high school but musical theory applied mathematics and physics should be taught too.

Most people aren't stupid...

they dont KNOW how to THINK or STUDY...

not to get all OUTLINERS...

but dedication to a craft or skill is critical for success...

people now think being able to replace a hard drive means you UNDERSTAND how a standard PC operates...

EVERY THINKS THEIR OPINION IS VALID JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONE.

You know how much side money I get because they don't even know how to change a hard drive ?

Well my daughter is a straight A student who is invloved in modern dance, art and athletics. In fact she will be leaving tomorrow for Atlanta for a competitive cheerleading competition.

She enjoys school including math and will continue to be supported in all areas of interest.

I don't believe in limiting yourself since you don;t know what the future holds.

But since she has been 2 if I was outside working on one of the cars she would be right to get me tools.

I fix cars because I don't beleive in throwing good money away because I was to lazy.

BMW dealer was going to charge 285 for a lowbeam light bulb and another 200 in labor.

Plumbers charge 85 just to show up...

They don't teach it to 100% of kids.

I don't know a state that requires more than Algebra.

As a matter of fact students are required 4 years of gym to graduate but only 1 year of math.

And you won't get calculus until your senior year...junior year for some.

They teach computers in grade school.

Math isn't bullshit and that is why black students aren't represented in the majors that pay the most.

thats why you don't see as many black pharmacists, doctors, engineers, scientists.programmers.

And once you get to college you have no foundation to learn technical math so what exactly are you doing with computers...help desk ?

Of the 3 million job openings they have been speaking about almost all of them require advanced skillsets so while unemployment is highest in the black community we are least qualified for those advanced positions.

I remember when digital clocks came out the amount of kids that couldn't tell time on a regular clock.

Kids can use an electric can opener but don't know how to use a manual can opener.

Its just as important to know HOW a tool works as it is to learn how to work with a tool.

get a new calculator in the middle of an exam that may be for a new job or to get your degree.

Yep!

I'ono but I wish that I was better at it as so I can ascend to esoteric levels of mathematics to learn da secrets of antiquity. :D

There's a TON of free resources with FULL and easy to digest explanations. I made a post about 'www.khanacademy.com' last year or so.

KNOW this. In understanding maths, no matter how complex it may seem, there are ONLY 4 operations that you will EVER perform to solve a problem.

Addition
Subtraction
Multiplication
Division

That is all. And I'm NOT being condescending. The fundamentals REALLY are it. Everything else is simply formulas and rules that apply to different types of problem, using some other flavor of; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The REAL trick is learning how to CONCEPTUALIZE LOGICALLY as to how to manipulate the numbers(values, units, discreets, objects ) creatively.

I love math, but STRUGGLED to arrive at such a simple understanding, because I was taught wrong. A bad teacher can FUCK YOU UP.

As a mathematician myself, I find many students that I encounter not willing to put in the hard work everyday. Some are definitely more interested in rapping and texting when attempting to learn the foundational skills. But I see some students trying everyday.

It absolutely IS about the effort, but ALSO about the contextual understanding/comprehension. ALL of my teachers taught the SUBJECT. NONE of them taught purpose, context, relevance(or at least not very good at it), or for that matter, what math really is; a language used to describe and SIMULATE real world dynamics.

I wish you well with your students man, teaching can be rough.

agreed. but that still fails 2 explain why young brothers aren't more into math. or rather why their parents/guardians don't push them to work at math early on so they can be in honors math like that asian kid by the time they get to high school. the kid started off in regular math classes when he got here just like lil brothers and sisters. my guess is instead of letting him watch so much tv or fuk off his free time, they had him studying english and those math questions
Well let me put it this way, anything that is wrong with America us blacks are effected by it ten times worse... This is largely due to us lacking proper culture and family structure to counteract against some of the negativity of our American society.

Came into say this. Our educational system sucks ass. Truly does. Formal education has plenty of vague directions and wrong steps.

Nothing like sitting in a class with a proffesor or teacher in a lower income section of the city that's just there to get a check and rush through the work.

Math is something that should be self educated not formally educcated with sorryful ass teachers that half ass teach it. Never loved math until I relied on myself to educate myself.

Boy I tell ya...we are in trouble.:smh:

^this.

And if anyone disputes this, look how jim crow created a generation of blacks who can't swim.

The school system is more concerned in rushing us through. Mind you, most young men if they are having difficulty grasping concepts and show some sort of behavioral dysfunction as a result will be placed into Special Ed which IMHO is a mark of death for many academically.

Actually, there is a reason. The immigrant asian culture is focused on advancement. That boys parents probably did everything in there power to focus that child on his studies. He may not know who Jay-Z is but he can probably calculate derivatives like a mf...

Some of this is definitely true. And that No Child Left behind has caused a lot of problems too because they teach to tests which is just memorizing instead of teaching problem solving and thinking.

Please explain....I had 7 uncles and 15 aunts and they could all swim and they were all raised during Jim Crow.

Over half in the south.

I not being able to swim generation seems to me to be those born after the 60's.....

If that doesn't work, we can always change the answers on the test like these so called educators in The Atlanta Public School System did. They should all receive jail time for fraud.

In what’s being described as the most extensive case of test-tampering in US public-school history, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal dropped an 828-page bomb on the state last Tuesday detailing fraud in Atlanta public schools that was so ineptly concealed, it suggests that many of the city’s teachers are too stupid to be school janitors.

The report concluded that 178 Atlanta schoolteachers and principals—82 of whom have already confessed—either assisted students to cheat on the state’s standardized competency tests or deliberately corrected wrong answers themselves. Of 56 Atlanta public schools examined, 44 were found to have engaged in statistically significant cheating.:smh:

The book "Outliers" has a great piece on this. Basically Asians had to learn math to survive, then it became a pride thing. Suffice it to say that, in general, the black community doesn't value math much [anymore?].

Same reason why we can't get our finances in check. If you can't do simple interest, how you gonna understand the basic tenets of the stock market, and saving?

When I was growing up I was the shit for being so good in math. Now, I would get picked on in school. Wow has it changed.

Boy ballscout is goin in on this math thing.:)

But yeah schools are to blame, politics are to blame and ineffective teachers are also to blame but above all of that are the parents and lastly our culture here in America.

We have a lazy culture here in the states in general and that goes for whites, blacks and everyone else here. We are in an MTV remote control microwave push button short attention span instant gratification dominated culture. And as we all already know black kids will represent the butt end of that culture when it comes to education including math and science.

A lot of the immigrants and the asian immigrants in particular have a superior work ethic and pride instilled into them and the asians apply that with a vengeance especially towards math, science and education in general. It is a work ethic with pride and even ancestral or familial honor and respect.

I am sure everyone here went to school with at least a few asian kids or knew or met some somewhere. Did you ever talk to them about why they excel so well? They are not all brilliant Einstein geniuses. They put in work and their parents DO NOT PLAY!

Americans aren't that intense generally with math and science so through some parenting skills or some caring mentoring we may be able to get a few more young men and women of color to create a hunger and fascination with mathematics.

Any books that you recommend? What did you use to get to where you're at? I'm about to volunteer some time for a friend that runs a college prep program for a high school in the Bronx and I want to incorporate some insight into the importance of math.
