Why Aren't More Young Brothers Into Mathmatics?

This is an unacceptable excuse!!!

Let me clarify a little, many blacks are being taught to hate maths by teachers who were also taught to hate math..
Besides the only "true" unacceptable excuse, in my book, would be if they were to be taught correctly and still not into it...

I've never schooled in America,so I can't speak directly on it, but,how do you get be a maths teacher and hate maths and how do you teach maths incorrectly?

They are also being taught to hate math by their mothers..Women have a long history of not liking math and with the amount of black children being raised in a single parent household that bias is sure to come into play.

One of the biggest problems in inner city schools is teachers are assigned classes in subjects they themselves are not fluent in.

You have english majors teaching gym

Science majors teaching music

a non specified major teaching math.

This doesn't go on in the private schools or in the more affluent neighborhoods.

This was one thing Obama spoke of in his SOTU address.Fixing schools and rewarding good teachers and having the ability to get rid of the bad ones.

Paying them what they are worth to attract the best and brightest.

Well when he was refrring to fixing schools that applies to the schools our children go to because the schools their kids go to don't need fixing.

they aren't math majors charlie....

in most inner cities they take teachers who aren't even certified and allow them to certify after already working.

they don't get classes in the subjects they specialize in they get classes that need a body.

so in many cases you have teachers unqualified to teach the course they are responsible for teaching

This is the kind of thing parents should be up arms about!
If they don't say anything, who will???

Exactly but they don't even show up to parent teacher conferences.

So you can't get them to a school board meeting.

They don't check homework

SO imagine getting them off their ass to actually put in some work.

ANd they are the same ones who didn't realize Obama was talking about helping them and their kids when he speaks of fixing the schools.

They to buzy saying he doesn't do anything for the poor and balck.

See they to stupid to realize it's their schools that need the fixing.

Sad to say it but I hate math with a passion. I just couldn't get it in school i worked on alot of extra credit assignments just to get a passing grade but I had touters and everything that shit just didn't make since to me once I started learning algebra.

:( :hmm:

Which leads me to conclude that the answer to OP's question is because the parents don't care.....:smh:

first and foremost...and if parents don't care why would they expect anyone else to.

but thats not what you'll hear on this board..you'll hear how its the system and the white man.

cats don't remember learning to read used to be punishable by death.

my father is a college graduate and his parents never got out of grade school.

so if the parents care they will make sure the child gets the support they need.

:yes::yes::yes:

and its difficult to pursue advanced studies in the hard sciences...

plain and simple...

and the current generation - parents included, no longer recognize that these areas of study, while not glamorous, are very profitable and VERY respected areas of study.

there's no fame in it. Simple as that. When you start gaining popularity for knowing math, then it's a wrap.
end thread, its not a Blk thing not knowing mathematics its an American thing, its not cool to learn math, and I have a minor in Math but honestly if you dont get a PHD in it or teach its not used a whole lot, but at least I can count my money right lol. Need more scenes like that Wire season one where he got ripped off for being stupid, that will make math popular

No it won't..They will just have another excuse why not

if all the athletes and entertainers who have gone through millions and are broke hasn't taught them that a fool and his money are soon parted, a tv show won't either.

did weebay getting life and stringer getting killed make being a dope boy less sexy ?

most people are sheep.

I believe that there is a way to make science and math cool that many young people would gravitate to it.

Look, most people are just lazy so there is REALLY nothing you could do anyway...

but like that interview question thread on the low I got PM s thanking us for it and many positive responses...

So I think we have to at least make it a viable option and a attractive option...

shit

we still dont pay TEACHERS well so what kind of example for youth is that?

Word, laziness is a sickness. No matter how hard a person can encourage or push -you still have to rely on the person not to be lazy and just do it.

In the end I still think people are scared of math rather than it not being cool. I have met plenty of folk who envied the fact I know math well. Its just they find it too hard, scared of it or just lazy.

Plus with the new age of technology and calculators it makes it even more difficult to lay down a solid foundation of fundamental arithmetic. Kids grown up on computers and calculators. This automatically disables are person's potential theoretical thinking, which could contribute to new age sciences.

The economy is mathematical with many statistical applications involved and economic stability. For example, budgeting. Blacks have shown over time that it is difficult to properly budget money according to their living. Most overspend and do account for the unknown probabilities of being cost effective.

Technology advancements can not be ignored when discussing the down for of mathematics in America. Computers are handling all the calculations now. Thus the teachers who teach use calculators and pass that on to the students, which is allowed to use calculators.

Do me a favor one time. Ask this younger can they do subtraction without a calc. I know many middle and high schoolers who do not know how to do that, but can do anything on a calculator.

I don't know why you have to make science cool, it already is but if you are raised watching 106th and park and maury then you are doomed from the start.

But we had better cartoons too :lol:

Even though they are not a 3rd world nation, many of the Asian nations are more disciplined and even their government places greater emphasis education as ways of keeping their country strong. Over here they view our students as people they can capitalize off of and make a profit off of.. The board of education consider it a success if they are able to graduate a student with remedial mathematics and English levels. The board of education aim is to produce obedient workers with the capability of following basic task, with very little emphasis placed on critical thinking which can lead to independent thinking. In order to fill the positions that require critical thinking, we often import them from countries like China, Japan, India as well as 3rd world nations who place great emphasis towards learning subjects that require critical thinking..

agreed. but that still fails 2 explain why young brothers aren't more into math. or rather why their parents/guardians don't push them to work at math early on so they can be in honors math like that asian kid by the time they get to high school. the kid started off in regular math classes when he got here just like lil brothers and sisters. my guess is instead of letting him watch so much tv or fuk off his free time, they had him studying english and those math questions

I taught in BK for awhile and one of the MAJOR issues is this...

these kids (and MANY ADULTS) just THINK they are smart..

I swear people now think that just because they can d/l songs on itunes, reboot a Pc, install windows, access a usb port and jailbreak n iphone that they MS Certified:hmm:

they have such a false inflated sense of self...

I blame Apple (the user-friendly shit) made a whole group of individuals THINK/BELIEVE they are tech genius'

FORGET MATH...

we got idiots on here who dissected Jeremy Lin's peripheral vision and breaking down the reverse pick and roll:rolleyes:

critiquing President Obama's global political viewpoints:rolleyes:

and how THEY would have smashed that PAWG much more efficiently:rolleyes:

To me it's clear that if people are uneducated yet they are required to attend school the system does a poor job. But this is not exclusively a black problem (even though we are disproportionately affected) this is problem is due to a lack of evolution in education.

As far as mathematics in all honesty for most people understanding algebra, calculus, trigonometry, etc. is of little value. Unless it applies to my field my understanding of it is pointless. Even if it is my field my understanding of the application is more important than the theory. Ie. if I can use a calculator or an excel spreadsheet it pretty much negates the usefulness of vehdic mathematics.

In my opinion the classical education system is a dinosaur. Kids should be learning how to use a calculator instead of how to long divide. Kids should be learning how to use excel instead of learning algebra. Lets teach them how to balance a check book instead of trigonometry. Lets teach them how to craft a resume instead of bullshit essays. Lets teach them how to clean their house instead of how to dissect a frog. The reason black children aren't interested for the most part is because the application of the knowledge is so mysterious. They learn the bullshit theories then have no reason to apply it to the real world.

If we taught the real world applications then taught the theory it would connect. No one should be dissected animals in highschool because the percentage of individuals who would actually use this knowledge is miniscule. Teach what the masses need and education will be more efficient as it is education teaches what the elite needs so the elite do well the masses are left uneducated.

How would you know if it is of value to you when you are in high school and don't yet know what career path you will follow.

Hell most students either don't have a major in their first two years of college or change their major.

SO how will you know what aspect of education will be of value to you in the future ?

So i really don't follow your logic.

And as far as using a calculator before you learn how to do it long form is really what is wrong right now.

What happens if your caculator breaks you quit ?

I always say you should learn how to make gravy and once you know its okay to then open a jar .

Right now there are so many people who learned computers with the GUI and have no idea how to use the command line.

When I started I learned DOS and still use it at times now.

SO again I think your logic is flawed.

Shortcuts don't benefit you, they make you lazy.

And besides you should learn adding subtracting division and multiplication in grade school....In middel school and HS they allow calculators

I was never really good at math and I have more right brain attributes than left brain. In college I was celebrating when I completed all of my math requirements.

The best way to learn math is visually through examples. Most problems require a 1-2-3 type process (meaning logical order), so the teacher must be clear in what the student is trying to understand. Also the student must practice (over and over again) until understood.

A lot of kids missed the foundation of mathematics (such a basic arithmetic of adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying). Without a solid foundation of those things, math become a mess for a lot of people.

Math doesn't become abstract until proof based calculus courses, so everything before that is a straight-forward procedure. You just have to remember the steps and concepts.

Thank you.

Lol logic is simple. What percentage of people use calculus in their jobs. I would guess less then 1% so why teach it to 100% of the kids. Wait till those 1% of individuals demonstrate a proclivity then teach it.

Almost all Americans go to grade school what percentage of Americans use algebra in their job. A vastly smaller percentage then use computers yet algebra is required while computers are not. What percentage of individuals use a bank account. A vastly bigger percentage then the individuals who use geometry yet geometry is required and consumer finance is not.

My point is your math is bullshit it's not needed teach me how to use the tool. Why learn how to beat nails in a board with my bare hand when you can teach me to use a hammer. If your hammer breaks by a new one. lol If your calculator breaks get a new one. Lol

I really don't give a shit if black children can't do calculus I care if black engineers can't use calculus but guess what they can. I give a shit that black children don't understand basic nutrition, cleanliness, consumer finance and computers. Education in these subjects has a far greater impact on an individuals happiness and well being then learning advanced mathematics.

Interesting observations....

I have encounter those type of people before. A decade ago knowing how to use a computer made you smart. Now most of this stuff is really watered down.

They don't teach it to 100% of kids.

I don't know a state that requires more than Algebra.

As a matter of fact students are required 4 years of gym to graduate but only 1 year of math.

And you won't get calculus until your senior year...junior year for some.

They teach computers in grade school.

Math isn't bullshit and that is why black students aren't represented in the majors that pay the most.

thats why you don't see as many black pharmacists, doctors, engineers, scientists.programmers.

And once you get to college you have no foundation to learn technical math so what exactly are you doing with computers...help desk ?

Of the 3 million job openings they have been speaking about almost all of them require advanced skillsets so while unemployment is highest in the black community we are least qualified for those advanced positions.

I remember when digital clocks came out the amount of kids that couldn't tell time on a regular clock.

Kids can use an electric can opener but don't know how to use a manual can opener.

Its just as important to know HOW a tool works as it is to learn how to work with a tool.

i understand your points and agree on a whole but "school" is really for created a well rounded functioning citizen...

discipline, responsibility critical thinking are all involved when these areas of study are PROPERLY taught...

MOST BGOL cats LACK THE DISCIPLINE TO EVEN READ THE RESPONSES ON THIS THREAD BEFORE RESPONDING:lol:

I would never disparage their usefulness...

everything has its place...

learning the arts shouldn't create a legion of American Idol contestants...:D

but appreciating music and sculpture and poetry and literature is essential

Of course office skills are important and SHOULD be taught in high school but musical theory applied mathematics and physics should be taught too.

Most people aren't stupid...

they dont KNOW how to THINK or STUDY...

not to get all OUTLINERS...

but dedication to a craft or skill is critical for success...

people now think being able to replace a hard drive means you UNDERSTAND how a standard PC operates...

EVERY THINKS THEIR OPINION IS VALID JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONE.
