What dates you?

We called it hide and go get it! Same concept. Damn it's some old ass dudes up in here! Not excluding myself. I remember all of the above.

Especially....

Penny candy
Cheap gas
No seat belts or car seats
b/w television
come home when the street lights come on
$1.00 Movies (not the throwbacks, the new shit)
8-tracks (I had an 8-track boom box, it was heavy as hell)
Jheri curls and curl activator
Hi top Fades (that shit is coming back now)
Duece and a quarter was a car not money.
a nickel bag would last for a whole week
Hit it raw and not be afraid to die!!
A fresh pair of sneaks (Converse Chuck Taylor's) cost about 20 bucks!
Drive-In Movies (getting some pussy in the back seat)
Cassette mixed tapes
Wild irish rose - cheap ass wine
Malt Liquor!!
Block Parties and blue lights in the basement.

I could go on and on.....

The good old days. I'm just hoping this era has some good memories because we live in a fucked up society today!

Man those were the days.....

Get Like Me....

1. TV went off.
2. Stamps and pay phones were .25
3. CDs costing over $20 and coming in long cardboard packages.
4. Remote were actually still attached to VCRs.

How about just using a pay phone. Has anyone 20 or under ever used a payphone? :smh::lol:

What is it that dates you?

Oh... you remember when TV actually went OFF? I mean seriously. At the end of the day TV went OFF! NO TV. TAKE YOUR ASS TO SLEEP!

i remember...

-when the TV, CBS i think, or FOX..would come on

-when cablevision had 36 channels, ESPN was 15, playboy was 37 (you had to hit the right combo, press the right button, and you had a 60% chance of catching free playboy)

-i don't remember sports before '90, but i remember EVERY time there was a shuttle launch, after the Challenger blowup, we stopped classes and would watch

-recording Hot 97 freestyles on tape, and cuttin' the grass to that

-The Berlin Wall coming down, end of USSR, Tienamen Square, Anita Hill trial

I remember Pop/Soda/Cold Drink used to be 89 cents. Now that shit is like $2.00

The Penny candy lady.... Anybody have those in their neighborhood?

Being Forced to go outside and play or clean the whole damn house. Now these lil fuckers don't even like fresh air.....

Looking all day for materials to build the perfect ramp to jump on your bike? My dumb ass used old drywall and damn near killed myself one time..

Actually dancing at parties, not grinding, but dancing!

Man I miss those days!

The candy lady. 1.50 would be enough to be straight and have something for your friends.

The one thing you didn't want to hear during the summer is if you come in this house one more time you're staying in. After that the thought of not being outside running around was too much. Parents don't even get the chance to say some shit like that.

Atari, then Nintendo and eventually Sega.

Watching the Box to see music videos. And using a tape to record your favorite songs off the radio and then trying to go back over something when you were sick of hearing it and trying to time it so it didn't fuck up the next song.

Beta

I said "gank" the other day in the office and it was like the DJ scratched the record and turned on the lights in that bitch. After the uneasy silence I told all present, FUCK YOU! And kept it moving.

OK... I know i'm getting older because I was talking to some of the younger men that I mentor (gasp) and we were trying to figure out who was funnier. Katt Willaims or Dave Chappelle and someone mentioned the whole Rick James bit. Then they tried to test me to see if I knew who Rick James was... smh... damn whippersnappers... so I said, "Do I know who he is? I got the record." And these fools to a one said, "What's a record?" At that point I was just dumbstruck. Then I realised that these kids are 16 and have no idea what a record album is. So I had to explain that and they were like WTF? You had to listen to your music at home? In one room? Not on your ipod or computer? LMBAO!! So that leads me to this question.

What is it that dates you? For me... it's probably got to be Lawrence Welk. I remember that show so clearly. The Bubbles, The Lennon Sisters... all of it. In fact that's all there was music wise on TV for a while. Especially when you only had three channels. Well 4 including PBS. Wait a minute... i'm dating myself even more.

Oh... you remember when TV actually went OFF? I mean seriously. At the end of the day TV went OFF! NO TV. TAKE YOUR ASS TO SLEEP!

I'm right there witcha, Boss Money! A few years back, I bought a USB turntable so I could convert my old records into MP3s. I realized that my two youngest kids had never seen a turntable before. They looked at it like it was an alien spacecraft!!:lol:
I remember Lawrence Welk, too. Music on TV didn't get really good until American Bandstand, Soul Train, and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert got on the air.

You know, we all slept better when TV wasn't on all night.....

^^^Addendum: I was just surfing past a cable channel called 'THIS'. BAT MASTERSON was on. Another channel has BACHELOR FATHER, MCHALE'S NAVY, HAZEL, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, etc...

Somebody's still watching this stuff.

GREAT LIST.

Daktari was cool, but prolly wouldn't hold interest for todays kids. Emma Peel was the 'it' girl of that TV era. ZOOM was my older sister's favorite. (Fanny Dooley, lol)
Voyage, Seahunt, Branded, U.N.C.L.E., & FBI were all good shows, some of which are still on cable. (I watched Bat Masterson the other day)
Funny story about Black Ivory: when my family lived in Washington Heights, my sister and I befriended a cat who moved into the neighborhood. A music conversation ensued one day, and my sister and I were raving about the song 'Mainline'. The guy gives us a funny look, and says, "That's me singing." I was like BULLSHIT. Went inside and pulled my mom's album out and sure enough, there's his face on the cover with this HUGE afro. He said that no one ever recognized him in the street, so he didn't usually discuss his old career. What a surprise THAT was. This happened over 25 years ago.
Damn, how time FLIES.

ok, don't know if anybody else caught cable tv in its infancy. R rated movies streaming all night long and not having to get carded at the movies for it. Anyway, my cousins used to watch HBO back in the day and they would always catch this one move called "Spring Break". It was on like 15 times a week. In it there was a bar scene and this song called "I wanna do it to you". The chick that sang the song was a snow bunny, but she gyrated something crazy. Hair was all over the place and, though she was not a PAWG, she had a nyyyyce little frame. Every time this came on, because of those bastard cousins of mine, I was compelled to watch this movie just to get to this scene. I am probably alone in this but I don't give a @#$#$@#%^&%*&!!!

When thick meant an in shape girl that had a nice ass, thick thighs and big tiddys. Now thick is used to describe big block line backer looking women that are 200lbs plus. You know you old when u remember a time when thinner sisters out numbered the heavy ones.

I don't ever remember being in a car seat as a kid. In fact, I rode in the front seat as far as I can remember.

I still wear baggy jeans and all my sneakers are either black, white or a primary color.

I still keep my blunts in a cassette case

My DJ mixer still has a phono/line switch.

I watched Robot Chicken for the first time last month.

I just got a kobo last month. My daughter still rolls her eyes when I tell her how awesome it is. maybe because she's been using hers for the last two years.

Yesterday I was making a point and referenced the opening of the original Get Smart tv show and they had not a clue wtf I was talking about and I got blank stares. I told them youtube it. Also I just cant help it I use a lot of old school terms and phrases. A whole lot of things that I reference in conversation musically or otherwise.

I always used the Michael Jackson Test.... Ask the person what was the first Michael Jackson LP they listened to.

Jackson 5- 50's

The Jacksons/ Off The Wall- 40's

Thriller/Bad- 30's

Dangerous/History- 20's

" You mean that old white lady who touched kids used to sing?"- <20

*two cents*

^^ Using the term LP would go over a lot of kids heads.

I remember my Father leaving a Gas Station to find another
'Cause at 63¢ That was Crazy

Next place was 58¢ Thats when I learn what Gas costs

Shit...i must be one of the oldest men on this site!

I remember only having black & white, floor model tv's but that may be bc we were dirt poor.

But HBO was just getting started & you had to "mess up" channel 7 with the knob & hbo would play late at night.

Then showtime came out & there was aerobics with those girls with tights all up their crotch; i can still see that brunettes eyes...i was in love!

Next up, my lionel train set & the black & white Atari...and then, fucking without dickbags.

Fuck that. Remember being able to twist the channel turner (knob) from the TV and only being able to turn to stations with pliers? Shoo...my family's from the old country...They used to watch the same TV station for years before someone told them they could change the channel. :itsawrap:

Or you got the vertical multicoloured stripes and that NOISE

Yep here in NYC channel 9 and 11 would actually go off the air.

Also knowing what a busy signal is and actually can say you've heard one.

1. them adapters that let you stack 6 "45 rpm records " and they'd play one at a time. If you worked it right you could stack 8-9 records on there.

2. double cassette decks, you could trade tapes with people and copy them

3. jeri curls, when that shit start going bad, you'd have to put activiator on every hour. There were dudes at school hitting the bathroom between every class putting on activator. I remember a couple of dudes using water.

4. parachute pants/ breakdancing

5. Jesse Jackson running for president

6 The first space shuttle disaster

7. the neighborhood candy house that sold liquor to the grownups.
