Next Post-‘Spider-Man’ Skirmish For Sony & Disney: A Tug Of War Over ‘Spider-Man’ Helmer Jon Watts?
jon-watts-e1566584770188.jpg

EXCLUSIVE: As the dust settles on the Disney/Marvel and Kevin Feige exit from the Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, the next looming tug of war might well be over director Jon Watts, who catapulted from the small budget Sundance film Cop Carto the A-list helmer of the $880 million grosser Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which just surpassed the 007 film Skyfall to become Sony’s highest ever grossing film at $1.11 billion.

I’m told that Watts was only bound to the Spidey franchise as director for those two pictures and that it’s no certainty he will be back to direct Tom Holland in the third installment being written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. They wrote the record breaker Spider-Man: Far From Home.

I’m told he’s being courted by Marvel. It is understandable that Marvel and Feige would want to keep things going with Watts: Feige has a strong track record of helping to change the career trajectory of filmmakers who wouldn’t have been automatic choices for mega-budget superhero films, from Joe & Anthony Russo to Taika Waititi, James Gunn and Scott Derrickson. As for one-upsmanship, there are bruised feelings between those studios over the Rashomon-like press narratives that followed Deadline’s scoop, over who did what in dismantling a brilliantly orchestrated introduction of a hit superhero franchise. It has gotten so bad that some wonder if it would even be possible for them to rethink things and come to terms on Spider-Man.

On those talks that Deadline revealed Tuesday: I continue to hear from reliable sources that the notion Feige was too busy to do more Spider-Man films just doesn’t hold water; he loves the character and the way those movies served the fans and the Marvel Universe. I continue to hear that Disney asked for a 25% stake where it would finance that much of the movie and receive that much of the equity upside. This arrangement would only have been for any pictures that involved Marvel & Feige. It wasn’t a forever deal, like the time one Sony made years ago to continue as distributor of James Bond. Back then, Sony cut MGM into a co-financing relationship on the pictures The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and 21 Jump Street, that gave MGM rights to co-finance future installments. The Spider-Man deal was only for pictures where Marvel lent Feige and the weight of its brand and cross pollination in Marvel movies. Still, it was a big ask of Sony, which had been getting a relative bargain at 5% of first dollar gross. That 25% offer sat for a half year, and finally the conversation was the 50% co-fi stake, before Disney called the whole thing off.

It will be interesting to see what Watts does, but his reps at CAA have enviable leverage if he chooses to direct another Spider-Man, or a Marvel movie, or a blockbuster from any other studio. Stay tuned.

damn..

that is SMART move.

Feige trying to lock up the best and this Marvel style directing and writing to have the whole CREW help each other out?
Sony?

Psssst..

take the f*cking deal yo.

Sony is really fucking stupid but I can't believe they gonna go out llik this :smh:I still think a deal will get done....

I do NOT know who "leaked" this...

but Sony got KILLED worse than Jay Z in the court of public opinion

and it keeps looking WORSE.

and THEN Disney drops Ms marvel moon knight and Mandolrian like...

Spiderman WHO? the TRAIN just keeps chugging along

Oh and fans still mad about Netflix?

All THOSE characters?

Now they going to FX

Your welcome.

Cause now?

Sony has NO margin for ERROR.

Which puts HUGE pressure on the Spiderverse directors to deliver.

HUGE

which was COMPLETELY unnecessary.

And those guys are GOOD (cause they rebounded from SOLO VERY nicely)

but now?

Sony CANNOT even do a sub par Spider ANYTHING.

Which is also UNFAIR to Holland and crew.

So even if it WAS Disney bullying Sony?

NO ONE will EVER side with Sony.

And funny how Pascal still getting killed (rightly) but I think its Tony Vinciquerra who is in charge now?

@ViCiouS can confirm.

So who owns the right to the Miles Morales Spider-man
Sony does, but now they’re putting themselves in competition with the entire MCU......and they will not win, like stated before....every movie they make will HAVE to be a homerun, and they don’t have a good track record of doing that.

Did Tom Holland Just Confirm He’s Still Playing Spider-Man?

From dramatic Star Wars reveals to theLizzie McGuire sequel to Steampunk Emma Stone, the D23 expo has been a wild ride for us all. Which is why a blink-and-you-miss-it nugget revealed by Tom Holland following a D23 panel may have been buried under all the fresh news. Speaking to EW and People, Holland said:

“It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”

Since news of the Disney and Sony Pictures dispute over Spider-Man broke earlier this week, fan speculation over whether Holland would be returning to the franchise has run rampant. While the common consensus is that Holland will be reprising his role, Sony has not yet made an official announcement regarding the upcoming films. But if there’s anything we can be sure of in these strange and uncertain times, it’s that Tom Holland loves playing Spider-Man, and that we, the viewing public, cannot handle another incarnation of this character. Remember to take the path of least resistance, Sony!

that still made a shit ton of cash(terrible as it was) and that’s without Tom Holland who’s now a huge star thanks to marvel and Tom hardy venom crossovers. It may suck but it’ll make bank. Also not exactly something to brag about so I can see why he went uncredited lol

Sony only owns film rights to spider-man; they don't own anything else. Disney and Marvel can do live TV, animated series, and anything else to fuck Sony up.....

Spider-Man May Be Out of the MCU, But at Least He’ll Get This New Disney Ride

As if you can’t walk into the Calabasas Erewhon and see any number of Avengersstars, Disneyland’s California Adventure is getting an Avengers Campus land, complete with rides, food, and a meet-and-greet area. Bob Chapek, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, announced the new project, which will take over DCA’s a Bug’s Land, at this weekend’s D23 convention. (RIP Heimlich’s Chew Chew train, the most fun you’ll ever have going about .5 miles per hour.) Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris will also get superhero-themed lands. “When guests visit Avengers Campus, they will become part of an interconnected, global story that spans from California to Paris to Hong Kong with the Avengers recruiting new extraordinary people to join them,” says an official Disney Parks blog post. Guess that means you have to visit all three parks, oh no!

At DCA, guests can ride a new e-ticket attraction where they fly in the Quinjet with the Avengers to Wakanda. The land will also feature “WEB,” Worldwide Engineering Brigade, which houses the very first Spider-Man ride. Sony and Disney drama aside, fans will finally get to experience what it’s like to web-sling, as they help Spider-Man collect escaped spider-bots. At Pym Test Kitchen, Ant-Man and the Wasp will test shrinking tech on food and moms will regret not packing sandwiches. The Los Angeles Timesconfirmed in June that Disney has plans to build a microbrewery in the new land, because truly nothing says “campus” like craft beer. You and every disgruntled dad waiting for their partner and kids to get off the Little Mermaid ride (it’s just the plot of the movie; you could watch that on Disney+!) will meet there in 2020.

Philly’s Keystone Comic Con tells attendees not to ask Tom Holland about Spider-Man’s split from Marvel

Can we ask Spider-Man’s Tom Holland about leaving the Marvel Comic Universe or no?

In a confusing move, Keystone ComicCon made an announcement Sunday morning to the packed audience of 2,000 people waiting for Holland’s panel. They said the audience would not be allowed to ask him any questions about the Disney-Sony dispute because “it might mess up any contract discussions that will be announced within the next few days.

Then interviewers started the panel by asking about the dispute.

Holland gave the same answer he gave at Saturday’s Disney’s D23 Expo, saying that the news was “a bit of a shock,” that he’d done five great movies and he’d continue to be Spider-Man.

Then, despite the warning to the audience not to ask questions about Disney, the panel took no questions at all from the crowd during the 45-minute panel.

"It was kind of odd to be told not to ask about it, but then have them ask it in the interview,” said Nicole Emma, 16, from Berkeley Heights, New Jersey who Tweeted about her displeasure with the announcement. It was her third ComicCon but she couldn’t remember the audience being told not to ask a panelist about a topic before.

“The answer he gave was so scripted, I think they’re still working on it,” she said. “It was almost literally word for word what he said at D23.”

Sony and Disney, which owns Marvel and its Cinematic Universe, announced Monday afternoon that Disney would be ending its partnership with Sony Pictures and that Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige would no longer be involved with the Spider-Man films. While Disney bought Marvel Studios in 2009, but Sony holds the film rights to the Spider-Man character, and they agreed to work together in 2015.

The announcement caused a furor among fans who adored Spider-Man’s appearances in the Avengers movies, including the latest Avengers: Endgame, the best-selling movie of all time. Just last week, Sony announced that Spider-Man: Far From Home is expected to become its highest-grossing film ever.

The remainder of the panel, hosted by two writers from the sports and pop-culture website The Ringer, mainly focused on well-worn Spider-Man questions about putting on the suit for the first time, his favorite Spider-Man suit and what it’s like working with other great actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson.

There was some new gossip. Holland said he’s been a medical disaster lately — he said he hurt his hands a while back doing martial arts training with Robert Downey Jr., then he hurt his stomach muscles trying to do a backflip in a Spider-Man suit that didn’t allow for much flexibility. Recently he’s been doing running and boot camp training to lose weight for his new movie, Cherry, and “just fell over” in a train station and believes he broke something in his foot.

Holland also shared that Jon”Happy” Favreau completely improvised the scene at the end of Far From Home where he’s interviewed about dating Marisa “Aunt May” Tomei. Holland said it was a good thing the camera wasn’t on him because he was dying laughing.

The next Spider-Man installment will be “something very different,” Holland said, possibly paralleling some of the challenges he faces in his own life. No one could get the 23-year-old known for his accidental spoilers to give up any more information.

“I’ve gotten pretty good at this,” said Holland, noticeably thin in black pants and a short-sleeved gray T-shirt. “I will give you nothing!”

After the panel, Holland spent at least four hours signing autographs and taking pictures with fans, some of whom brought props like crowns and tiaras and a “Jake Gyllenhaal fan club” sign (Gyllenhaal was spelled incorrectly and then crossed out, as a joke because Holland has spelled it wrong a few times).

Kayleigh Butler, 30, a probation officer from Manahawkin, NJ, said she’s gone to other conventions, but none with Tom Holland. She said she didn’t even think to ask about the Sony-Disney situation until she was told not do. Then she was surprised when it was the first question asked, particularly when he gave the same answer as was broadcast widely Sunday.

“I do want some official statement to understand what happened — who walked away, why — just to give me some clarification,” she said.

Venom: Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Cameo Reportedly Cut By Marvel

Marvel reportedly asked Sony to cut Tom Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man cameo from Venom. Released last year, Venom gave Sony the hit they desperately needed. While it was far from a critical darling, Venom broke box office records during its run and spawned a franchise. Venom 2, directed by Andy Serkis, is coming through the pipeline - pitting Eddie Brock against his nemesis, Cletus Kasady/Carnage. Buoyed by Venom's success, Sony is also working on movies for other characters they own the rights to, like Morbius the Living Vampire.

From the minute Venom entered development, the prevailing question was whether or not it was connected to the MCU. That proved to be a point of confusion, as there were seemingly contrasting takes by Kevin Feige and Sony's Amy Pascal on the matter. When Venom premiered in October 2018, viewers saw that it was an independent project that wasn't tied to the overarching MCU narrative. However, there had been rumors in the months leading up to Venom's release that Holland filmed a cameo as Peter Parker. Of course, the finished film made no mention of Spider-Man, but that could be because Marvel had a say.

On an episode of Collider Live, Jay Washington said Holland did in fact shoot a scene for Venom, but Marvel made Sony remove it from the movie:

“I’ll tell you the truth: Tom Holland did film a scene for Venom… Marvel saw the movie and was like ‘Take him out. Take this scene out.’ Peter Parker was in Venom, not Spider-Man.”

Sony always intended on having Holland's Spider-Man and Tom Hardy's Venom crossover. They even made sure Venom was rated PG-13 so it could easily be retconned into the MCU one day. However, it seems like Marvel wasn't too keen on seeing Peter and Eddie meet (at least, at that juncture) and put the kibosh on it. Obviously, Holland's cameo wouldn't have influenced the plot of Venom very much, but it would have had significant implications on the franchise as a whole. Holland showing up in Venom would have essentially confirmed that film was part of the MCU, and that probably didn't fit into Marvel's plans for the Spider-Man character. At the time Venom was in production, the Sony/Marvel deal was still alive and well and Peter Parker was being set up as an integral member of the Avengers moving forward. This isn't to say Marvel would never have been open to a crossover, but they probably wanted to see how audiences reacted to Venom before setting something in stone.

ADVERTISING
the Sony/Marvel deal is kaput and Marvel Studios is no longer involved with the production of Spider-Man movies. This means Sony has the freedom to do what they want with the material, without having to worry about what another studio thinks. Fans are extremely upset Holland's Spider-Man is no longer part of the MCU (after being so deeply ingrained in Phase 3), but Sony could do their part to soften the blow by having fan-favorites Holland and Hardy share the screen. There's always the chance Disney and Sony reconvene to iron out new terms, but right now Sony feels confident enough to head out on their own, so it'll be interesting to see what they do with future Venom movies. Maybe Holland will show up in Venom 2.

Sony Says Spider-Man Is Out Of The MCU (For Now)

Sony Pictures chief Tony Vinciquerra confirms that Spider-Man will not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe... for now. After joining forces to make five movies culminating in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the highest-grossing solo Spider-Man film, Sony and Marvel Studios have ended their partnership. The lack of a new agreement between the studios came as a surprise to many and immediately threw the future of Spider-Man into question.

However, in the days following the initial report that a deal was not struck, several reports continued to come out highlighting the complexity of figuring out a new arrangement. Even though it never looked great, there was some optimism that a deal between Sony and Marvel/Disney could be found and allow Tom Holland's version of the web-slinger to stay in the MCU. As of right now though, that will not be the case.

RELATED:Finally, We Can Get A Proper Spider-Man Movie Again

Tony Vinciquerra, the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures, recently spoke to Variety about the end of the studio's partnership with Marvel Studios. He said that "for the moment the door is closed" with regards to Spider-Man still being part of the MCU. The statement by Vinciquerra is a clear sign that in the mind of Sony's executives, the deal is not going to happen anytime soon. Vinciquerra didn't completely rule out Spider-Man ever rejoining the MCU, but the studio's plan is to instead incorporate him into the shared universe that Venom began.

ADVERTISING

This is the latest public statement to suggest that Spider-Man really is done with the MCU. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige opened up about the lack of a deal recently and said that they knew the deal was never going to last forever. He is pleased with the time they had with Spidey and claimed Marvel told exactly the story they wanted to. Meanwhile, Tom Holland also has been discussing what no deal means for Spider-Man's future. He's confirmed he'll still star in the films and has teased some exciting developments in his first non-MCU story. Based on Vinciquerra's other teases, the likelihood of Spider-Man appearing in Venom 2 or Tom Hardy's Venom appearing in Holland's next solo film are high.

ADVERTISING
That all said, many of the statements by people involved with Sony or Marvel keep a sense of optimism that this could change one day. The truth is that there is still plenty of time to figure out whether or not Spider-Man 3 will be part of the MCU. The movie does not yet have a director or release date, so Marvel and Sony could come back around to the negotiating table at some point before the project seriously moves forward. There's no guarantee that this will happen, and the odds of it coming to pass may not be as high as many would like. But with phrases like "for the moment" repeatedly being part of this discussion, all we know for certain is that Spider-Man isn't going to be part of the MCU... for now.
