11/04/10 - Anderson facing backlash from Brazilian fans for Maia slurs (updated)

Anderson Silva is facing a backlash from fans in his native Brazil after ringside microphones for the UFC 112 broadcast of his fight with Demian Maia apparently picked up Silva taunting his opponent in Portuguese, using terms which are considered very offensive in Brazil.

Portuguese-language MMA forums have been abuzz with discussion over the insults Silva levelled at Maia at points in the fight. The end of the second round is when he is said to have been most offensive, allegedly telling Maia "Bate na minha cara playboy" (“Come on, hit me in the face playboy.")

(Update: Several Brazilian UFC fans have contacted Fighters Only to say that this comment actually came from Anderson's corner team, who said to him "Bate na cara desse playboy" ("Come on, hit this playboy's face"). Anderson's corner are also alleged to have shouted "Falou demais, agora apanha" ("You talked too much, now get spanked"). Maia claims not to remember exactly what it was Anderson said to him in their fight).

Odd as it sounds, ‘playboy’ is a serious insult in Brazil when levelled at certain targets. The stark class and economic divides in Brazil make for a wide gulf in status between the rich and poor. In Brazilian terms, a playboy is a hedonist rich kid, the product of a pampered upbringing who cares little for the poor and knows nothing of real life.

Anderson is also said to have cried out "Cade o Jiu-Jitsu?" ("Where is your Jiu-Jitsu?”) as Maia failed to get him to the floor, and also told him “Get up off your ass and get hit some more” when Maia dropped to his back looking to play guard.

According to the general tone on the major Brazilian MMA forums right now, Anderson has surprised and upset many of his fans with his comments. Maia told Fighters Only yesterday that Anderson had sworn at him during the fight but declined to go into detail about what was said.

That was a sporting and honourable thing for Maia to do but fans have already picked up on the comments are spreading them around the forums. So far this particular backlash has been confined to Brazilian fans but a poster named Gomes on Portal do Vale Tudo summed the feeling up:

“Wow, the guy went mad. American are usually super socially-conscious with this kind of discrimination, when they discover what he said, heads will fly. This guy has lost all notion of what you can do in a fight. This type of social/personal insult is the equivalent of ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson saying "I'll fuck until you love me, bitch!"

After thinking about what happened, and also reading about it, now I think that Silva is simply insane!!!

That nigga Silva was cold with it.

* Demian Maia: 180 Day Suspension - Maia is suspended 60 days with no contact in training for 45 days for precautionary reasons. Can be cleared early by a doctor if the CT scan reveals no longterm damage

And to think, Silva did that hardly even trying.

Damn. It's good he didn't go full steam, cuz he probably would've severely injured him far worse.

Nah. Penn slacked off in his training. He stopped using Marinovich who was the one responsible for his transformation. Plus he had that neoprene sleeve on his knee.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has announced via Twitter that pre-sale tickets for UFC 115 at Vancouver's GM Place have sold out in just 30 minutes.

Premium members of the UFC Fight Club were given first crack at tickets Tuesday morning and gobbled them up quickly, with mixed martial arts fans from the U.S. and across Canada tweeting their excitement at getting access to the event scheduled for June 12 at GM Place.

Tickets were scheduled to go on sale to the general public Thursday. It is unclear at this time as to whether any tickets have been set aside for the public, or whether the entire ticket allocation has been sold out, but scalpers are already asking $400 for $75 tickets on Craigslist.

The event will be the first Canadian UFC pay-per-view fight card outside of Montreal, which has held two events previously and is due to stage another on May 8 when Brazilian karate specialist Lyoto Machida and kickboxer Mauricia Rua fight for the light heavyweight title.

Former champions Chuck (The Iceman) Liddell and Rich (Ace) Franklin are scheduled to headline the Vancouver fight card after Tito Ortiz was removed from the main event for undisclosed reasons.

The Vancouver sell-out would be the fastest in UFC history, assuming all tickets are indeed sold. The fastest-selling event previously was Montreal's UFC 83 at the Bell Centre, which sold out just one minute into tickets being made available to the public.

Other fights on the card include:

Heavyweight bout: Mirko Filipović vs. Pat Barry

Welterweight bout: Martin Kampmann vs. Paulo Thiago

Welterweight bout: Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald

Lightweight bout: Tyson Griffin vs. Evan Dunham

Lightweight bout: Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman

Heavyweight bout: Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel

Welterweight bout: James Wilks vs. Peter Sobotta

Welterweight bout: Ricardo Funch vs. Claude Patrick

Welterweight bout: Mike Pyle vs. Jesse Lennox

Nah, what I heard was BJ was showing up late and blah blah old BJ and Marinovich left back to the mainland.

"Dana White was just on Jim Rome is Burning and stated that Anderson Silva's (26-4) next fight will be a middleweight title defense against Chael Sonnen (24-10-1). He did not announce a date for the bout. White also stated that if Silva ever acts like he did at UFC 112 again, that whether he is the champion or not, he will cut him."

Can Dana White really be this clueless? Silva doesn't give a fuck about being cut. Everyone, including Dana, knows he's among the best (if not THE best) MMA fighter in the world. Look, Silva wanted to fight the best competition, and Dana White didn't/couldn't deliver. The result was a recent fight againt a very scared, and unwilling to strike, Maia when Silva left himself OBVIOUSLY open. Yet, Silva is the only one being chastized. I don't know what Silva's camp is advising him, but I think he'd be better off doing Steamboat armdrags for duration of his next fight and then moonwalking back into his corner after each round so that Dana does what he threatens. Silva has already proven what he went out to do. He won't get "serious" again until adequate competition is provided. Period.

Silva was on his bike and literally running in the last round and a half but Maia is partially responsible for the lack of action in the 3rd and 4th round by being too frightened to push his attack. Had he fought in those rounds like he did in the closing minutes of the 5th, Silva would have had to finish him.

Sonnen on UFC 112: Says he's not surprised by Silva the 'dirtbag'

By Steve Cofield

In a fight world littered with media types and fighters who have been afraid to call out Anderson Silva after he puts on awful displays that show a lack of respect for the fans, the sports and his employer, Chael Sonnen has been a bit of a renegade. Before UFC 109, he had some choice words for the UFC middleweight champ. So it's not shocking to hear he had a strong reaction when MMAJunkie tracked him down today for reaction on Silva's ridiculous, clowning win over Demian Maia. Sonnen fired away.

"I wasn't surprised," Sonnen told MMAJunkie. "It is par for the course."

Sonnen, who last fought in February, has been mending injuries and working towards his run for public office in Oregon. He along with Vitor Belfort should be next in line for a shot at the champ.

"There's people out there that need (to be) beaten up – he's one of them. And I have a moral obligation to society to beat him up."

Sonnen wouldn't go as far calling Silva unsportsmanlike but he did call him a dirtbag. His rant back in January included a diatribe about how Silva shows a lack of respect for the very people who prop him up.

"It’s quite ironic that all the media comes on and talks about how great this guy is for reasons that are completely un-understandable to me. How great Anderson Silva is, and all of us fighters are in the back going, ‘jeez, they’re out there massaging his ego, Anderson hates them so much, he pretends he can’t understand them."

"You want me to let you in on a secret, Anderson Silva speaks perfect English," Sonnen told MMAWeekly Radio. "He just has such a low amount of respect for you and all the rest of the media that he pretends he doesn’t. I’ve had conversations with Anderson Silva in perfect English."

If that's the case, it's probably not too far-fetched to say that Silva has the same lack of respect for ticket buyers and the fans watching at home.
