***** OFFICIAL UFC 117 thread ~ Silva/Sonnen ~ Sat. August 7th, 2010 - Oakland

who's the dimwitted ignoramus that said the fight should have been stopped due to strikes? Really??? Gtfo with that bullshit. At anytime.. Was silva limp? Not defendin g? In any real danger? I'll answer... No! Look at silva's face... And now look at sonnen's. Tell me who took the worst beating. Boy i tell ya.. Some of you dudes are either real fuckin haters or ya'll dont know shit about the sport.

Yeah, I'd like to see it, just from a spectator's perspective. But the fight fan in me? No. Sonnen tapped. Instant rematches should be reserved for controversial endings, draws or sometimes, 'iffy' DQ's. You can't use the fact that a fight was hard fought as an excuse to bump all the other contenders who fought hard fights of their own for a shot at the title. And upon further review, I think Belfort and Okami should fight for a shot at the title, while Silva heals. Okami has a win (via DQ) over Anderson and Belfort was supposed to have fought for the title already, but got sidelined by injury. It's back to the lottery Sonnen goes. He had his shot and lost decisively. A rematch would be exciting, perhaps, but not as justified as Hua/Machida was. If we're going to keep it real, from a sports perspective, we can't succumb to our wishes from an entertainment perspective. But try telling that to Dana 'Vince McMahon' White.

At first I wanted to see a immediate rematch, but now that you put it that way I agree.

I really just wanted to see silva fight the way he normally does. Relatively healthy without worrying about subbing his opponent for the sake of honoring his dojo. I basically want to see Sonnen get knocked out....

What impresses me most is that ALL the divisions are pretty much stacked (various organizations) with great fighters. We're talkin' from the 135'ers on up to the guys at 225 - 265. So much talent pool out there ... matchmakers like Joe Silva really earn their keep lining up potential bouts ... and thankfully they usually give us (the casuals & hardcores) what we want as fans/viewers/supporters. Fuck ... the 170 / 185 / 205 divisions alone are MAD DEEP full of great fighters ... and that's just in the damn UFC alone. Gotta love today's MMA game, fam'. Got to!

Yep also, this level of variety will cause the MMA game to evolve. There is no telling what these cats will be doing 10 years from now. Also I peeped that Silva Sonnen fight again, re-match definitely, Sonnen nearly ended Silva's career.

True - competition breeds evolvement. I heard a really good quote recently ... forget who it was from (wrestler or former wrestler) and they noted they respected Vince McMahon's savvy/business sense, but we're upset with the whole WWE takeover of WCW. They basically noted that the current generation of wrestling was at its peak in the late-90s when MONDAY NIGHTS WERE ALWAYS ABOUT THE RATINGS WAR ... AND HUGE LEVEL OF TALENT IN BOTH THE WCW AND WWF/WWE RESPECTIVELY ... THOSE WERE SOME GREAT YEARS IN THE LATE-90S BEFORE TURNER AND 'EM WERE BOUGHT OUT. So yeah ... to have the amount of talent that there is out there currently (hell - even from some of the smaller organizations, and outfits such as Shark Fights / MXC / the TuffNuff start-up and such ... times are good!!). Props also to the UFC/SPIKE for allowing THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER to flourish the past 5.5 years as well. Just think - it's been over 5 years since that great GRIFFIN-BONNAR battle! And to think of all the fucking talent that came out of that first season? DAMN!!!! FLORIAN / SANCHEZ / BONNAR / GRIFFIN / LEBEN / KOSCHECK / SWICK / KARALEXIS ... great season!

Uppage for my peoples!

I am a huge MMA fan but don't get caught up in the hype. The UFC has done a great job making every fighter in the organization look great. Dana White makes all of his fighters fight (Why he hates when Anderson Silva doesn't mix it up and wins by decision)and promotes them as "experts" of one form of fighting. Guys are wrestlers or boxers or know ju jitsu or judo or some other discipline. That makes the public think that there are all these "great" dudes in MMA when in reality there is only one champion and a bunch of hungry guys who train hard to get to the championship just like boxing. Its just that the boxing organizations are idiots when it comes to promoting their sport.

Valid point.

somebody suggested Sonnen vs. Belfort , since Anderson Silva can't fight till next year because of a fractuered rib ..... makes sense , but I pick Belfort to win

I hate to tell you but this is incorrect.

There can only be one champion. That doesn't mean the others aren't elite.

I'm not saying that they are not elite. What I am saying is that the UFC makes all these guys out to be championship worthy and they are not. You have some great athletes that are really good at what they do but only a handful are good enough to be champion. The UFC and Dana White leads us to believe that every fighter in the octagon is a legit championship contender or they wouldn't be in the UFC. Not true.

i just read that the next ufc will be showing at some movie theaters.
$15 a ticket.
im thinking i might check it out:dunno:

Yes ... scope it out, fam'. I believe they've done this before (UFC 100 locally) if I recall correctly last year.

They do it SOMETIMES for hockey / opera and/or broadway / the Olympics and such. My mom's gone to see 2 opera performances in the past 3 years or so and said they were DOPE!

They often show WRESTLEMANIAs and Summer Slams (and such) for WWE. I remember trying to go and see WRESTLEMANIA many years ago, and they were asking $26 a ticket. I was trying to use up one of my freebie coupons for Cineplex/Famous Players for $12 - 13 and they turned me away like "$26 + tax, please" - I fuckin' bounced

There are alot of HIGH-LEVEL athletes in general in the sport though. I'm always impressed with all the DIVISION 1 wrestling credentials there are. Hell ... J' Hendricks / Jake Rosholt / Shane Roller are working with Mark Laimon/Laymon in Vegas and reppin' Oklahoma State strong(ly)! Them cats are frequent visitors to MMA JUNKIE radio and get alot of love from GG, Goze & the listening public ... great athletes ... http://www.mmajunkie.com .

the only reason against going to the theater is the price.
30 for me and my girl. plus food and drink.
when i hit a bar i usually spend 30 total.

True ... gotta weigh your options.

Going to the bar/sports bar is fun and all ... but the only problem though is that too many "fans du jour" and CASUAL/NEW FANS are there and making noise/gettin' rowdy, plus the general buzz of the establishment drowns out ALL OF THE FUCKING AUDIO. So you can't hear any of the commentary ... just get the visual. Went to the bar for UFC 79 and 83 ... and it was fun (Canadian GSP fans and all) but we couldn't hear shit (and we were sitting 12 feet away from one screen on 79, and 10 feet from the smaller screens and 20 feet from the mega screen for 83) ... I felt like I wanted to go home and download the event days later to ACTUALLY HEAR the crowd and what the fuck Goldberg and Joe R' were saying

Where are all those bitch nigga coons who said his rib wasn't fractured?
I can already tell you, they're going to say they never conceded that his rib was not fractured or injured somehow, at some point before or during the fight... They'll say they said his rib was not 'broken', but fractured. And a fracture is not a break. Just watch.

Yes - they'll come up with something.

I'm looking forward to SILVA-BELFORT in 2011 ... should be good.

Belfort's a tough muthafucka ... should be interesting to see if Sonnen gets another win or two in before then and stays active, and IF Silva takes Belfort ... allows for Spider-Sonnen II later in the year. The reported PPV buys for UFC 117 were quite strong.

Full props to MING FEI HONG!

Sonnen nearly ended Silva's career???

Sonnen put up a great fight, but at the end of the day, he did nothing but help fortify the fact that silva deserves to be champ..

also there was wwaaaay more pressure on silva not only to win, but to make it exciting, Sonnen just had to win.

Sonnen said he was going to retire silva, that close but no cigar fool just doubled Silvas his worth in the game.

I'm wondering what the next fights will be. Is it gonna be SILVA/BELFORT in early-2011? Or are they gonna pair up BELFORT/SONNEN (late-2010) beforehand to see who's got it next? BELFORT for a chance at the title, or SONNEN for the rematch. Whatcha'll think??????????????????

UFC 117 salaries: Anderson Silva and Matt Hughes top $1 million fighter payroll
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Aug 16, 2010 at 5:20 pm ET
Headliner Anderson Silva ($200,000) and main-card winners Matt Hughes ($200,000) and Jon Fitch ($108,000) were the top earners at this month's UFC 117 event.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently requested and today received the list of officially disclosed paydays from the California State Athletic Commission.

The total disclosed payroll for the Aug. 7 event was $1.029 million.

UFC 117 took place at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., and the main card aired live on pay-per-view. Silva scored a come-from-behind fifth-round submission victory to defend his middleweight belt against Chael Sonnen in the night's highly anticipated main event. Fitch edged fellow welterweight contender Thiago Alves in the co-headliner, and former 170-pound champ Hughes submitted Ricardo Almeida in a featured bout.

The total paydays included:

Anderson Silva: $200,000 (no win bonus)
def. Chael Sonnen: $35,000

Jon Fitch: $108,000 (includes $54,000 win bonus)
def. Thiago Alves: $60,000

Clay Guida: $56,000 ($28,000 win bonus)
def. Rafael dos Anjos: $12,000

Matt Hughes: $200,000 ($100,000 win bonus)
def. Ricardo Almeida: $35,000

Junior Dos Santos: $80,000 ($40,000 win bonus)
def. Roy Nelson: $15,000

Rick Story: $22,000 ($11,000 win bonus)
def. Dustin Hazelett: $18,000

Phil Davis: $18,000 ($9,000 win bonus)
def. Rodney Wallace: $6,000

Johny Hendricks: $40,000 ($20,000 win bonus)
def. Charlie Brenneman: $8000

Tim Boetsch: $32,000 ($16,000 win bonus)
def. Todd Brown: $6,000

Stefan Struve: $30,000 ($15,000 win bonus)
def. Christian Morecraft: $6,000

Dennis Hallman: $30,000 ($15,000 win bonus)
def. Ben Saunders: $12,000

Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income. They also do not include any other "locker room" or special bonuses the UFC oftentimes pays. They also do not include portions of the PPV revenue that some top-level fighters receive.

For example, as previously reported, UFC officials handed out $60,000 UFC 117 bonuses to Struve (Knockout of the Night), Silva and Hughes (Submissions of the Night), and Silva and Sonnen (Fights of the Night). Silva's double-bonus performance netted him an extra $120,000 in pay.

In other words, the above figures are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not reflect entire compensation packages for the event.

UFC 117 medical suspensions go to 14 fighters, five could be sidelined six months
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Aug 16, 2010 at 6:20 pm ET
The pain that hampered UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva's final weeks of preparation for Chael Sonnen was indeed a damaged rib, and it may keep him out of action for up to six months.

Silva was among 14 fighters medically suspended following UFC 117, which took place Aug. 7 at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently requested and today received the list of medical suspensions from the California State Athletic Commission.

CSAC doctors suspended the middleweight champion for six months or until he produces X-ray evidence that a possible fractured rib is healed. Regardless, Silva is suspended 45 days with no contact during training for 30 days for precautionary reasons. He also needs neurological clearance and a CT scan before he is allowed to fight again.

The dual suspensions are the result of the champion's toughest title defense yet, one in which Sonnen dominated for four-and-a-half rounds with brutal ground and pound before Silva was able to cinch a triangle choke in the final minutes of the 25-minute bout.

Sonnen, meanwhile, did not escape unscathed. Although he did most of the damage, he drew a 60-day suspension with no contact for 60 days as the result of a facial laceration.

Co-main-event fighters Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch walked away from their second fight without injury, though Fitch took home bragging rights with another victory over the Brazilian welterweight.

Lightweight Rafael Dos Anjos sustained one of the event's most serious injuries when his jaw was broken during his main-card fight with Clay Guida. Dos Anjos is suspended for six months and needs a clean CT scan before he is cleared to fight.

Other suspensions included:

* Junior Dos Santos: suspended 60 days with no contact for 60 days due to a right-cheek laceration
* Roy Nelson: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for precautionary reasons
* Dustin Hazelett: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for precautionary reasons; also needs a new physical before his next fight
* Phil Davis: suspended for 180 days with no contact for 180 days or until cleared by a physician due to a possible right fifth-metacarpal (pinky-finger) fracture.
* Charlie Brenneman: suspended 45 days with with no contact for 30 days for precautionary reasons; also needs a new physical before his next fight
* Tim Boetsch: suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days or until cleared by physician due to a possible right-thumb fracture; regardless, suspended 60 days with no contact for 60 days due to a left-facial laceration
* Todd Brown: suspended 60 days with no contact for 60 days due to a laceration or until cleared by a physician
* Stefan Struve: suspended 60 days with no contact for 60 days due to a lower-lip laceration
* Christian Morecraft: suspended for 180 days with no contact for 180 days and also needs a CT scan of his brain; regardless, suspended 60 days with no contact for 60 days due to a right-eyebrow laceration (can be cleared early by a physician) and suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for precautionary reasons
* Dennis Hallman: suspended 60 days with no contact for 60 days or until cleared by physician for left-cheek laceration
* Ben Saunders: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for precautionary reasons

Man, you guys are missing out. This has been a great card up and down, and The main event is about to start. All of these fights are bangers. From Pettis submitting Roller at the end, to Jorgenson and Pickett in a three round fight of the year war were epic. Hell,Anthony Njokuani versus Maciej Jewtuszko was a prelim fight with a surprise ending. It's almost as good as the last UFC a week ago. This is why I watch WEC on Versus.

Same here, bro. BIG FAN of the lighter weight classes ... as the 135 - 155 dudes always deliver, and are EXCELLENT ATHLETES across the board. Gotta love the smaller fighters.

Enjoy the bouts tonight, everyone. Plenty of good names on the card ... and it's nice to see AUGUST picking up steam leading into the latter part of the summer, then early-fall. July was fairly quiet, but we're being treated to plenty of good cards of late. UFC / WEC / BELLATOR / STRIKEFORCE and the various smaller organizations as well. WAR MMA - stand up!
