:::Official BGOL Firefighter Thread:::

because i was at the top of the pile i think i skipped a few months tho might have been about 8 tops i don't think it was a whole year.....try and score very high on your written exam man use scratch paper and check your work read and re read use all that test time.

man I'm in the books fam....I just pass a recent FF test in VA...I'm ready to BODY this DC test....

good luck....

I come from a family of fire fighters in bmore. I was trying to wait to take the test after getting out of the military, but it took too long. I ended up coming to North Carolina and going to nursing school. I still have much respect for that job!!!!

I just ran into this thread, but im a Firefighter from Jacksonville, Florida. damn hurricanes fucking up my weekend plans, they probably gonna deploy us.

Please come to DC. We need more young brothers with their head on straight because everytime I go to the academy I see less and less of us. I will do anything in my power to help you study just like I offered other guys that come up but they refuse and fail and its too late to help. In DC just shut up, clean up and do whatever is asked and you will be fine. And don't just look at the starting wages and pay increases look at our schedule and retirement too.

other than FDNY (my hometown) i really would like to wofk for DCFD....

I know whats expected especially as a probie...chores...stay in the books...and just absorb as much as I can....its not a problem for me brotha...

I do need some help tho....so i'll hit you on a PM or in this thread in a little bit about exam questions that I'm confused about...

how is the dept over there in DC....how long you been in the service....?

how many FF's they trying to get off this list?

The department is just like the rest of the world. White people smile in your face but like clockwork you find out the low down. It never takes too long. You can't trust a lot of brothers either. Basically know what you are supposed to do and cover your own ass. I'm in my 4th year and next month I'm up for a technician spot at my house. I don't know how many are getting hired but they been bringing a lot of people on lately. They also will fire you over anything now. This firechief and mayor is cleaning house and its basically out with the old and in with the new.

why they cleaning house have FF's been doing some shady shit down there...

Fire you for anything...explain whats 'anything" family....

question brotha....are you familiar with the Personality Attributes part of the exam?....

ex:

I have Done some things in my past that I still regret...
1) Strongly agree
2) Agree
3) Not Sure
4) Disagree
5) Strongly Disagree

i know "not sure" should never be selected....I have a study guide that suggest that we never choose "strongly agree/disagree"

is this correct...i'm mad confused on that part of the exam....

When I say fire you for anything I mean if you make a mistake and the press gets hold of it the new chief and mayor will get rid of you and you have to fight to get your job back. No really shady shit out of the normal. I don't really remember much about the entrance test but for the psychological test I recently heard a lot of brothers were failing and just accepting it without questioning why. To most blacks this is a job but for the whites this is a legacy. Many have had fathers, grandfathers and even higher and they don't want you to have it. On the psych test you will be given over 1000 questions and most are just repetitive.

Answer all your questions the same way. They will ask the same question 50 different ways and if you say no I have never smoked to question 7 and on question 232 you say yes I have tried smoking a cigarette before they will question you on that.

97% white male....:smh:

question if you fail the psych what do you mean by question it....is there a away to over turn it....

the Psych tests are B/S IMO...is there a polygraph....

and how was the board interview?

One guy I talked to failed the psyche test and went to a different doctor on his own and was cleared. No polygraph. We didn't do a board interview either. I think we was suppose to and it was skipped.

I believe their is a board interview and it was skipped with us. A lot of things have changed since I came on. When they give you that blue book make sure you complete it and turn it in as soon as possible. Its just background checks and personal info.

I wouldn't mind being a Firefighter. Only thing that kinda fucks me up is the long ass waiting period to even apply. The list opens up next year sometime, but still... I've been waiting since 2006 (last time list opened up in Chicago). :(

HUH? There are tests all the time! NEVER just wait on ONE test! Test for every Dept that you can!The practice from being in so many testing processes will prepare you for the Dept you really wanna work for!On top of that, its easier to get hired with a Dept when you are already a firefighter in another.

My Job at the PAPD is like that, their written psych is a lil over 1000 questions but you take an oral psych as well and they question you on some of the answer you gave, if you can't articulate why you answered a certain way you go to another oral psych, that is your protest now if you answer better you move on to a third psych thus having a 50/50 chance of getting the job.

The 1 oral without a scheduled 2nd is good. If you are scheduled for a 2nd oral but not for a third thats bad.

So its 1 good, 2 bad 3, 50/50. I say this because the PAPD use to be like the fire department, some old legacy shit and you needed a major hook up to get on this job. Now that shit stopped, so no matter what family members you got in here they can't do shit if you don't get pass the psych and usually the psych knock a lot of folk out of the running.

They don't know why, a lot of officers coming from other departments say "well I have been an officer for x amount of years and I still failed the psych"

Well there is a couple of reasons for that.

1. On your background booklet you have to start who you know that works for the agency and their position or affiliation. A lot of them have some sort of affiliation with PAPD through somebody they know working there so Port Authority look at that as that applicant having the advantage than someone who is does not have any affiliation.

2. Them being current officers and thinking the psych is a breeze, they think this because with the interviewer ask them scenarios the first thing out of their mouths are their police experience which is a big no no because the psychologist doesn't have any police experience they want you to answer from a common sense prospective.

Current cops always invoking their police experience like that gives them the edge when it doesn't. This is why a good 95% of them get knocked out of the process and trust papd is a had job to get onto we only have 1600 officers in total top pay 90k with this new contract. So you do the math.

A lot of applicants with no prior police experience are making the cut, too many current officers come from different agencies with bad habits that are hard to break.

This is why the NYFD is starting to adopt the papd's type of psych's because I am starting to see a lot of brothers on that job when just 5 to 10 yrs ago it was very rare to see a brotha in a station house.

I have tested in 3 dept's so far....with 3 more to go...

the trick to getting into fdny ff is to get into fdny ems first.
apply to become a firefighter while in ems and go to the top of the list.

Anyone want to come to Toronto, Canada. You start out at 50,000 after one year you make 60,000 and max out at 85,000. When the ladies see you in your uniform their pussies get wet.

Word? I LOVE Toronto! If I wasn't so settled i'd do that shit in a heartbeat.

are you FF in the FDNY....

yeah they call it "Backdoor route"....I heard FF's hate when applicants do this....

i like blood not fire.
fuck that backdoor crap. all the white guys are doing it.
that's how they get their family in quicker.

Naw....during the 80s,I let it be known that I did not drink, even tho I did.In some houses the white guys had their own little hideaway...and things were strictly divided. Not that I wanted to drink with them...I knew if something happened...shit would fall on me.

As a FFOPI remember those guys taking the truck out...throwing the stick, the big ladder...to a guy's 3rd floor window, waking him up to bring his drunk ass to work.Think they would have done that for me???

*cosigned*

Never do the stupid shit they do just to "fit in".Cuz when the going gets tough they will roll on you in a min.Them mfers HATE seeing us in there doing the same shit and making as much as they do.Plus if you promote, them mfers would act out and if you correct them, they will throw in your face the misdeeds you did with them back in the day. When it comes to rules im definitely no daredevil whether they like it or not.I love this job and aint losing it for some white dude that knows that I know he doesnt like me anyway.

as soon as you get your emt b, apply to fdny ems.
get the chief paper on tues and see when you can apply.
u get to the top of list but still need to have the requirements.
we meet a lot of people on the job who want to become ff's. they take the job because they know it will get themthere faster.
a lot of these guys have ff's on the job already.
they just did not want us to know.

speaking on the drinking thing...
How would young brotherman poet answer the engineer was drinking right before a engine response got call out on an emergency???

i test in one city and give them my answer and ended up getting into it with one of the panel members...basically i was like im turning his ass in and the guy i got into it with was a engineer but to make a story short i got offered the position but i declined and told the chief that if has drunks driving for him then i cant be part of a department with low standards...

That was the "right answer" for panels out here.Say you see a dude drinking. You are to report it to your officer immediately. If what you are saying is true you could have sued them mfers too(but you probably wouldn't be hired now).In "real life" I would never hop on a rig driven by a drunk dude.Fuck that.

man I was on a firefighter forum and a cat said he was going to go into FDNY EMS to become a firefighter....

MAN those guys tried to destroyed him....they said its "lazy" and i don't want somebody like that in my dept...

look at this post on that forum

"Bull****. Why should someone who gets a 70 on a test and/or fail an event during the physical (our real physical, not the BS they do now), get hired before someone physically and mentally capable? Its a backdoor BS move, and in the experience of many of the posters here who are actually affected, the percentage of hairbags who take this route to get the job is much higher than the percentage of hairbags who took the same test and competed fairly."

:smh:

are you a FF or EMT in FDNY

I test on the 23rd for D.C. my second time around made it to the training academy and got kicked out the week before graduation:angry:.....long story :smh:.....but its a cool career especially since i'm not married nor do i have children

Damn man..it might be tough to get on with the same Dept.Kepp testing at other Depts too.If it comes up in the background, admit to it and chalk it up to immaturity and that since then you have matured and improved in the areas you were lacking in the academy.Dont make excuses!

Makes you wonder if the FDNY FF's driving them rigs are drunk especially when a rig gets into an accident. :smh:

Just answer it honestly. There are no "right" answers.

I took two tests like that that were exactly alike. One department I passed.I put Agree or disagree for all except a few.The other one I put the exact same answers and failed .They only took the people that strongly agreed or strongly disagreed. Some Depts want flexible people, some want rigid. You have no way of knowing. One thing I will say is anything that compromises safety,or rules you cant tolerate.

cuz my study guide that was made for DC exam 2008 only picks agree or disagree...like wtf....never strongly agree or disagree

I know answer honestly...but 40-60% of ppl that fail the test or do poorly its on this section of the exam...I fucked up the 1st time with FDNY on these exact questions....

I can't believe I have to deal with this again....:smh:....

what should I do...the ppl that made the study guide are FF's 2...

Thats machismo talking.Whether you go thru EMS or not,who gives a fuck? Its about getting the job.Dont let these white dudes who:
1-Already have a job
2-Dont want to see you have the job
tell you what to do to get a job!
Make a plan, stay on ya grind and do your thang!

Trust these mfers dont change once you get on either. These mfers will steadily discourage you from promoting!"Hey______ you taking the Lieutenant's test? For what? You dont like being a firefighter?I have 10 years on and you think you know more at only 6 years to be a Lieutenant?" *Find out later that they took the Lieutenants test 3 times after 4 years on but never passed and gave up.*

I dont have experience with that type of exam and dont wanna tell you the wrong thing, but If just agree disagree and "either way",I'd just answer honestly.Always agree with providing service, safety and rules.Disagree with anything that compromises any of those.
