How would you respond if a guy you used to know changed gender identity?

I recently moved back to a city I used to live in and have been reconnecting with folks this month.

I was talking with an old friend today and he asked me who from our circle I've talked with since I've been back. I named a few people and then I got to one guy who we can call Bill for discussion's sake.

"And I was with ____ at ____, ran into and Bill was there so I chatted with him a bit."

"Oh you mean her. It's her now, just so you don't get shit for it like I did."

This was a real surprise. I've had a lesbian friend transition to male, with testosterone shots and the whole package. This friend (who was a heterosexual to the best of my knowledge) clearly looks like a dude now.

However, this person who I was informed is now a "her" looks exactly the same as three years ago! Hair is longer, that's the only change.

I try to respect people's preferences but I find it harder with people I knew pre-transformation, especially in a case like this where there has been no visible change. For the rest of the discussion, I just avoided using pronouns and used Bill's name instead. "Oh, that's wild. I couldn't tell by looking at Bill." It's a lot weirder when the person doesn't even look like the gender he/she wants to go by.

Edit:
I obviously didn't buy enough popcorn, back to the concession stand I go ….

That's an answer? I was asking a serious question. Why is it that you post a lot of threads about homosexual shit?

I post a lot of different threads on here. What you notice and what gets a response is less a reflection of me than you and the board as a whole.

You say that was a serious question but when I post serious shit, the response often falls between silence and stupidity.

Notice: “Numerous” gay related threat by you.
There’s thousands of threads on here, I have no idea what specific thread that you’re speaking about.

It’s probably something about fighting for gay rights.

Fellas I apologize for responding. If we don’t respond, it’ll go away.

As time goes on, we will always be loved by some and hated by others
And whether the people who talk bad about you know it or not
They really save you from obscurity every time they mention your name
You see, anytime anybody ever talks about you, either directly or indirectly
They put a quarter in your immortal meter
They keep you alive, whether they want to or not
They practically do the opposite of what they want to do
Which is forget you
I dedicate this thread to the day
When you motherfuckers finally figure it out
And the day that you bury me and erase the memory of me

The one I know is a Viet Nam infantry vet. Big Red 1. Real shit. Married to a woman to this day. Weird but no big deal to me. Hardest thing is remembering to call him by his girl name. Live and let live.

I didn't say you didn't post serious shit. I noticed that but I also noticed that you post a lot of homesexual shit and I asked you why.

Thanks for the response. Same here but not something I encountered before today.

In college I worked with a guy in the mall that transitioned into a woman. He was hella flamboyant so the transition thing didn't surprise me that much.

I know a dude who turned into a lady dude but looking back at him he was always neat and extra perfect from his hair to his shoes,my brothers you to call him a faggit back than cause he looked like the lead singer for the r&b group Hi-five,I guess he said fuck it and crossed over.....

What could I do about it?nothing,it's not hurting me,live your life;I know it will be weird but so is bumping into that hot girl from high school who isn't sooo motherfucking hot no more.

I still call Bruce Bruce, so I don't give a fuck. I'm not calling a dude a woman's name. I just won't say it.

Cassius Clay AKA Muhammad Ali; Chris Jackson AKA Muhammad Abdul rauf

Those are one thing, but I'm not going to call Bruce anything but Bruce and they can't make me call Bruce a woman

That's easy to say about a celebrity (unnecessarily hostile IMO but whatever) but not easy to apply to a friend or acquaintance unless you don't give a shit about alienating the person.

I wouldn't use a name or pronoun. I think that shit's stupid.

On Halloween, do you call 3 year old Brandon dressed in a Batman costume Batman, or do you call him Brandon?

Andrew is not a woman. He's just wearing a woman's costume.

I'm not living in somebody else's fantasy. They can fuck what they want to fuck, but I'm not living in a fantasy. He is not a woman. I don't give a good goddamn what it feels like on the inside as Dave Chappelle said
