no it doesn't load itunes. shift + restore in itunes lets you select the 3.0 software file to update your phone.
if you followed the directions and did a sync before the update, there is no way you lose your contacts because they will be stored in your backup file from the sync.

For anyone upgrading, make sure you sync with itunes first and do a backup. That way when you do the firmware update, all you have to do is sync with itunes again to get your contact info and settings back.
Updating my touch now.
If your a iphone owner you should now this.
Please dude you know damn well anyone that has a jail broken iphone should know you have to wait for a new jail break every time a update drops.
