kewl, i wouldn't mind trying hero, i've heard 60% good and 40% bad, at first I heard lots of good shyt, but lately, it seems a lot of the geeks at xda have been rolling with Cyanogen, but whatever works good for you! I wouldn't mind trying Hero, but it doesn't support bluetooth, I haven't held a cellphone to my ear for longer than 10 minutes in 3 years. I have bought atleast 6 bluetooths in the past 3 years, lost a couple, dropped 1 in water, broke some hooks, etc... When hero supports bluetooth i'll try it, hero also has some nice themes!

yea that is one of the draw backs as I said it took me to partition my sd card to get the full effect of hero.

You are right alot of people are rolling with Cy his builds are great but hero I don't know why just feels comfortable

I'm flash Jac newest update but I'm seeing all the problems people are having.

How far have you gotten on your G1?

i don't know what u mean about how far i've gotten, I'm running cyanogen 4.0.1 right now, somebody posted in this thread his new release yesterday, i flashed that, didn't see anything spectacular, seemed to move a lil slow, then i saw i'd have to reinstall everything, so I decided to go back to my last backup. Believe it or not, I couldn't use 3g before the root, the phone was always on Edge, but 3g was on, the signal was that bad, unless I was in the middle of downtown Atlanta. Every since the root, my 3g coverage has been stable all over the city. Far from perfect but a giant improvement from before.

Im having a fucked up issue tonight with my G1.. maybe some of yall have been thru this. It happens every now and then, not too often but normally it will correct itself by now. Whats its doing is not recgnizing my SIM or network @ all! I get the symbol of the SIM with an exclamation mark and no bars with a X. I have tried to manually select a network, power it off and on, put in airplane mode and back.. nothing. Normally when this happens I just have to let it go to sleep then when it wakes up it will reinitialize. Last resorts cut it off and back on.. none of that shit is working tonite :(. Ideas? Anyway to soft reboot with losing my contacts and messages?? I have txts on there that I NEED.

one of the professionals should be able to further assist u but from my knowledge i'll try and answer your questions.

1. No, you will have to reinstall the apps, i suggest doing backup your apps and before u root do the cyanogen recovery, then before u wipe and do the update, backup with nandroid.

2. it all depends on you, i think most on xda recommend an 8gb sd card, but i've saw people with 2gb and 4gb, some people store movies and lots of music, so they need big sd cards, some people seem to download every app. available so they need big sd cards, the size of your sd card depends on you and your needs.

2.1 yes, but under certain circumstances u may have to reinstall a couple of apps.

Thanks for the quick response. I think I'll root my phone tomorrow after I buy an 8gb card. I couldn't find nandroid in the Android Market. Do you suggest any other backup apps? one last question, what is the most stable version of Cyanogen (Hero ROM)?

Im still not a fan of rooting.. the only benefits i calulated for ME personally is being able to remove some of them pre-installed apps.. thats the only thing i care to do..

sounds like your sim could be screwed, i've been through 2 since I've had the g1 and I had a similar problem. Since I already been through 2 sims I thought they were free, lol, but my friend just paid $80 for one so I guess not. How I've got my sims free, just call tmo's customer care, let them troubleshoot you, if that doesn't work, they'll tell u 2 go a branch to get a new sim, verify that's it's gonna be free and that's it.

Go to your Gmail account, scroll to the left, click on contacts........Aren't all of your contacts there? Contacts should automatically sync to gmail unless you changed the default settings.
I've use sms backup to send my text to my gmail account, also there's g-trial that allows u to back up sms, mms, contacts, etc... Now if u can't currently get in your phone it may be too late to do that backup, let t mobile walk u through it, if u have some super important stuff that u need, go to xda or t mobile forums, one of the experts may be able to help you.

Nandroid comes automatically with Cyanogen Recovery. When u boot in recovery mode, before wiping data and applying sdcard Update.zip, u need to click on that nandroid option to backup current. So if u ever want to go back to how things currently are, That's a life saver. I just installed Cyanogen v4.1.6 when I saw it seemed a little slow, i saw i'd have to reinstall all my apps, and i didn't off top see any enhancements I booted (power and home key)and did the "restore latest backup" and boom I was back to 4.0.1! I had to reinstall a few programs but not all. I think 4.0.1 is the most stable, I think they say some apps like youtube, pdf viewer, and the camera aren't working in 4.0.4? i'm not sure if that's just a couple of people having that problem or everybody. But, 4.0.1 is working great for me. I'm not sure what is the most stable version of Hero.
MAKE SURE U GET THE CYANOGEN RECOVERY IMAGE BEFORE ROOTING, AND BEFORE WIPING AND APPLYING FROM SDCARD UPDATE.ZIP, MAKE SURE YOU DO THE NANDROID BACKUP, for extra comfort you can also download G-backup and Mybackup from market to save your applications, messages, etc.... to sdcard, gmail or online.

Im still not a fan of rooting.. the only benefits i calulated for ME personally is being able to remove some of them pre-installed apps.. thats the only thing i care to do..

We all know what's best for us, I don't knock that. But, you do know rooting will make regular task faster? I once said the same thing, I didn't even care about apps2sd, tethering or any of that shyt. I didn't see the real purpose, but when I rooted it felt like I had just bought a new phone! I have 5 screens full of dope widgets, a better keyboard, themes, For some reason my 3g was horrible before the root, now it's much better, 80% of the youtube videos would bring up some error, I did hard resets and everything, rooting has fixed that problem. There's just way more settings options when u root your phone. Who knows when t-mobile will send another update (I think they said 1 more update near the end of the year or early 2010), Cyanogen has updated 2 or 3 times since I rooted 2 weeks ago, lol.

the most stable version of hero to me so far jac 1.7.

I still haven't updated to 1.8. I need to change my recovery image to 1.4 and will tonight.

yo royal I have yet to run cy sowhat would you personally rate it? Also how the respond time? Like you know some roms allow calls to come in late or not even at all.

You were right. Thanks. I just got back from the T-Mobile store. Thankfully I already had another SIM due to already having to replace my G1 via warranty for water damage. On a side note.. they sell them for $20. Somebody needs to get some $$ back.

since going to cyanogen I have good 3g coverage compared to horrible before, so bad i disabled 3g. Everything about the phone is faster, from gps, to clicking apps, web browsing, but my favorite part is all the paid apps i've added to the phone, and i don't have to worry about memory or space. I just flashed cyanogen 4.0.4 today and all is going smooth! The only thing i've noticed is when I reboot, it'll say beautiful widget force close or wait and i press wait. youtube and everything works great, i read some post of a couple of people having problems with youtube and camera, all is working fine. There's no lagging or anything so far. I can't comment on Hero, because i've never tried it so I don't know if it's faster or more stable, i don't see how it could be more stable than cyanogen, cyan. is very stable with the exception of some force closes here and there.

She had bought it a while back, it must have been one of those independent dealers, i don't know, like i said i never had to pay for one. Shyt t-mobile has been real good to a nga, currently got that unlimited hookup for being a loyal customer. I called them a month ago complaining about 3g problems and they offered to send me a new phone, keep in mine it's not insured, and I bought this phone the very first day it came out so it's not under warranty...but i told them i didn't want a new phone, i got a new phone a couple weeks after it came out when my 3g wasn't workn. Props to Cyanogen! I finally can use 3g......

At first they were saying NO, ONLY USE CYANOGEN WITH 1 CLICK ROOTING. But lately, I've ran into a couple of threads on different sites that talk about 1 click rooting and hero. I haven't clicked because i'm not interested in Hero since it doesn't allow bluetooth. Search google and xda and try to find out all u can before u do it, make sure your phone is compatible, etc...

Can i use this for my G1?

kaspersky went crazy with trojans when I was in that site.. before I even downloaed anything. I got that unlimited deal for like $49 too. I called about an issue I was having and the rep put me on.. best thing running right now. I dont see me leaving them as a service provider solely because of it. I know besides Cricket no one is gonna come close. I have been with T-Mobile since the SK was black and white.

they should make it unlimited everything for longterm customers for 49.99.. still payin 100 per month with unlimited phone/data/text/roadside/insurance... too damn much

AGREED. I have everything except for the roadside. The thing is, other than txt I dont use the phone THAT much but I still appreciate the deal and option. Its the data plan that jacks the price up. They will never throw that in for a lump sum of $50 tho.

i'm running Symantec Endpoint Protection all is good over here, with the exception of some redirects on that site, but for all the paid apps i've got today, it's worth it. will run a virus scan later. Yeah I'm very satisfied with tmobile, even better I call them and talk to somebody who I can understand.

$49 for unlimited talk is good enough, don't want to put them out of business we are already very fortunate, mofo'z on xingular and other carriers are paying $40 to $100 more a month for the plans we have. I know my ex had unlimited talk with xingular that shyt was $99, then their high ass data plan, etc....I'm paying a little over $80 a month for everything u have except roadside and insurance. How much is roadside? I have it with geico so know need, just curious at tmobile's cost compared to geico's.

I need this G-Backup, trial is over, that's the most convenient backup i've used. i think ipmart has it but i can't view all threads, i'm waiting on them to send me my fkn registration code.

Im about to go head and pay the lil .99 for this app called Useful Switchers but if anyone knows another site besides the last one recommended above (antivirus went HAM when I entered that site) for free apps I may grab that one along with some others. If not its def worth the $1.

SPRINT BOUT TO HAVE UNLIMITED EVERYTHING FOR LIKE 70 BUCKS SOON !!!!!

I'm currently running Cyanogen 4.0.4, this thing is running quick and butter! I have 5 home screens! Latest app i've added is Contacts Sidebar widget! I have it on one of my home screens. It's like a fancier version of myfav. It's also great because u lose myfav when u root your phone. The theme i'm using is Ted's latest hero theme! I was in line at Publix, fkn around, girl said what's that, she has a g1, so i showed her all my home screens and everything, said she never heard of rooting the phone. We exchanged numbers! I'm gonna do some work to her and her phone.

GOOD LOOKING OUT! Now dumb question.. how do I install? just transfer via usb?

you can plug your phone to computer (usb), click mount device, simply copy the useful switchers apk file to your sd card (folder). Once you've done that, unplug your phone from computer, using Linda File Manager or Astro find that useful switchers file on your sd, click on it and it should ask you which installer to use, I always use package installer, i've never had a problem with it. Click install and there you have it. On a side note, Since you have never installed like this before your gonna have to go into your settings then application settings and check Unknown Sources, that simply allows you to install shyt u don't get from the market.

The other option if ever needed, if u have a card reader, put that into your computer and copy the file that way, then use the same instructions up top.

I appreciate all the info. I noticed they posted the app in Feb.. up until like 2 weeks ago it was a free app. Will this install unlock it fully? Even if its an older version thats unlocked Im cool with that.

just installed, good looking out. It looks like it installed an older version which is fine. It force closes only when you try to use an option I never use anyway (the flashlight symbol). Im fine with that.

i'll be on the lookout for a newer version, btw anything requested in this thread will be unlocked versions unless it's something that somebody needs that's no longer in the market. Dro is your phone rooted if so, what OS r u using?

facebook for android/widget (glad to get rid of that facebook lite crap)
handcent sms (shits on chomp and all others)
google finance
usa today
digital clock and date widgets
cardio trainer
missed call (bout to delete tho, not too necessary)
spare parts
twidroid (bout to delete)
astro (just picked that up)
contact2sim (not really necessary)
weatherbug widget

Actually Cyanogen has his experimental rom out using the Donut update 4.1.7...camcorder isnt working on it yet nor does it have the new marketplace update but shit is super fast even witout the overclock widget. Goto the marketplace and lookup "CM Updater" anytime he releases any new ROM it gives you a notification.

The hero roms are good for basically widgets and the browser but Cyan ROMs are much better

And I guess since some ppl missed it...these are the steps to regain your My Faves once you flash

F.Y.I. for those using the cyanogen ROM and need MyFaves
Ripped from the myTouch ROM. You have to manually add it to the /system/app folder and reboot. It might take a few minutes to update your myFaves contacts before it shows up.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zwyn2mmkoy1

Code:
From the terminal

# su
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3
# cp /sdcard/download/MyFaves.apk /system/app

DONT GO HOME AFTER TYPING CODES IN JUST POWER OFF PHONE AND TURN BACK ON (give a little while for myfaves to show up about 2mins)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=542267

Tested and works as per instructions

Another App ya'll should check out is My backup Pro. Not only does it back up apps...SMS, MMS, current settings, home screen shortcuts. Basically the whole damn phone. Yes it costs 2 bucks...stop being fucking cheap.

And for the rooted users, Look up "Overclock Widget" by Billy Cui. You can make ya phone a BEAST or a battery saver...depends on what u need

thanks playa! i did the beta Cyanogogen, it lagged off top, so i did a restore and said i'll wait til the bugs r fixed. If u insist on stickn with the beta, dl camera pro, that'll fix the camcorder issues. Thx for the myfavs, i saw a release for rooters but I like this contacts widget a lil better since i think i think it looks better, just something different i guess. I have the unlimited talk so myfavs isn't a big issue. I didn't know about the overclock widget, guess i'll try it out in the morning. I havent' found the g-back apk yet so yes i'm using My Backup Pro which is turning out fine. Every time I flash a new OS, I use My Backup Pro which is turning out fine. Wish I would've understood it 2 weeks ago. Every time I flash a new OS, I use it and it restores my sms, mms, and call logs. Zei if u need My backup pro, let me know I have it. Or if you need any other app. holla, i'll try and find it if i don't have it.

You can make ya phone a BEAST or a battery saver...depends on what u need
yeah mybackup pro is probably the best app to pay for out of all the ones on the market... especially if you flash roms all the time..

*never use it to backup contacts !!! gmail backs up contacts for you automatically.. if you back up contacts using mybackup pro and restore them, you can cause a conflict with gmail contacts and lose all of your contacts once it syncs online...
