Anyone here know Shaka54 personally? He hasn't been on here in a while.

Sorry to hear he's dealing with health issues. I need to get on top of my estate planning as well. I definitely need to get a trust set up.

Went through some major shit early this year and had a lot of support from those I care for. It made me appreciate them more. I always try to keep up and look out for the good folk around me. The love and support has always come back 10 fold.

I have a number of friends a bit older than me and am sure that visits to hospitals and funeral homes will begin to increase over the years. Not looking forward. Things like that made me think of Shaka54.

I'm a BGOL lifer.. so if y'all see me disappear for more than a week or two, I'm likely in jail/prison, a place that has no internet, or dead. I recognize everyone leaves here for their own reasons, but we're all connected even if it is on the internet. If we did have a meet and greet, there's a few on here that I would be looking to dap up and a few I know I probably wouldn't rock with. I'm sure y'all can relate.

Well said, BX.

Thanks re: pops. He's always been a realist and has been sober to the fact that life can be cruel and take plenty of people from us too early. He's been having knee and heart-related issues, and is hoping to get a knee replacement in the next year or so. The heart stuff has caused him to slow down & not over-exert himself. Not taking on any heavy lifting and such as his property is on a hill & there's plenty of stairs and elevation (which makes things more challenging). We help him when we can, and he also hires a guy in the neighborhood to help with yardwork and maintenance.

Agreed re: hospital visits for friends and family. Have been many a time and it can be challenging with loved ones.

Regarding estate planning too ... one of the best things to do is just be up to date with it. Make sure your emergency contacts with friends and family are correct. Peoples' email addresses and phone numbers. Make sure people know where you might have a spare key stashed in your yard. If a family member has a spare key, is it still located where it previously was ... and do others know how to retrieve it (if something happens to them)? If the will in place is really old ... has it been looked over in some time? Are the correct people listed as beneficiary / beneficiaries or executor(s), power of attorney? Things like that. I put my cousin and his wife in there as back-up executor(s) as they live nearby and are pretty stable. Left a portion of the eventual estate to them too as they have 4 kids. Maybe that can help them in their future.

Yes re: board members. If someone up and leaves out of the blue, feel free to shoot them a message or email ... or do a quick wellness check-in with others. See if they've heard anything. It's all one big dysfunctional family of thousands of people, but fuck it ... BGOL's the best online forum in the history of this worldwide web shit. We all make it work. Fuck the other boards and forums who think otherwise.

Side note / friendly reminder - if you have any ongoing direct message threads with anyone (particularly those who don't post too often) - send them a quick hello.

"Just checking in - hope all is well."

It's a good way to quickly get caught up. My dad's old-school & calls people on the phone & emails them (doesn't text, WhatsApp, etc) . His version of "wellness checks" - most of his friends are 60 - 85, and for his older relatives out of town who are 80 - 90.

Yeah - better safe than sorry. Especially these past few years with everything everyone's been through.

My mom just emailed me today asking if us kids could be blood donors moving forward. Reason being - she broke her femur at the hip 2 years ago just prior to her 70th birthday. While in the hospital she had a blood clot in her lungs, and needed a blood transfusion (2 pints) and iron infusion. She noted she thought she was near death. Felt terrible. Thankfully she's back to normal and I've seen her a few times since, and most recently about 3 weeks ago.

Called her on her birthday and per usual - said to treat herself out for lunch or dinner, or buy a gift or two and send me the bill to e-transfer reiumburse her. She appreciated that, and said it would be appreciated if we were blood donors moving forward.

Her boyfriend's been doing that for 40+ years now.

My pops has a neighbor and a couple of close friends he trusts. Whenever he's away from home for a few days out of town ... he'll just email / call them and give them any contacts he has for where he'll be at. In case of any issues with him, OR if something bad happens at home (break in, storm damage, flood, etc). He's had some calls re: storm damage flooding, and sketchy people in the area breaking into cars & homes.

With the baby having sickle cell and getting transfusions regularly please give your Mom not only my well wishes but love for raising awareness about the importance of blood donation.

A great woman - tell she got ya bgol brother all choked up with emotion.

Hope other members read your post and do the same.

Its important.

Yes - blood donation is very important. I've actually been glad to hear the radio ads the past year asking people to PLEASE consider donating blood as their active donations and supply / supplies are down. Reminding people it is straight-forward to do and can potentially save lives.

Same can be said for declaring one's self willing for organ donation(s) when registering driver's license, etc.

I noticed a few weeks ago @Shaka54 hadn't posted in a while
He usually posts in @darth frosty, NFL football thread on the regular
If it does end up being some sort of medical condition
Hopefully he's able to pull through okay :dunno:

I used to joke around with him about his Green Bay Packers
But yeah this is like the first time that it actually hit me, like "well damn BGOL is kinda like family"
Even some of ya'll ninjas who constantly fight & argue
Its can be entertaining at times ;)
Ya'll ninjas are like the cousins I never met, gathered around at the family reunion BBQ

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but this thread pushed me over the edge. I MAY have posted it in the past, but this is a later edition. If someone can't access the link that means you need to step up your dedication to BGOL.

Thanks man.

Yes - hopefully things improve for him. Always wished he had moved to a level property as it’s a tough place to live w/ all the maintenance and compromised mobility. Makes life tougher on yourself than it needs to be in retirement.

All the best in your life - as you noted having gotten over the craziness earlier in the year.

They key with estate planning is knowing you are not leaving a confusing mess behind for friends or family. Not a shitload of debt, etc. That they have an idea where to access your money / investments. What bills need to be squared up. What to do re: their house and distribution of other estates.

Regarding BGOL ... best forum in that it is everything packed into one.

I hope he's okay. We used to talk of our army times in Germany....much older than I am, so maybe health issues....
If that's the downside of the anonymity of BGOL. Everybody knows everybody but don't nobody know nobody

As a fellow Vet, I hope he's alright, but there are two typical reasons folks disappear and don't get on for months: jail and death.

I hope he's just busy

I'm getting a lil' curmudgeonly-er as a long time poster but I still have a lot of affection for my brethren on this site. (Not the undercover type dudes or coons etc lest y'all sick fucks think I'm giving y'all a pass). Even though I argue with decent brothers from time to time and don't post as much as I'd like to etc I hope y'all cool ass brothers and sisters know how much I appreciate y'all. @Shaka54 is a VERY good brother and I wish him and his ppls all the best. Same goes for the many brethren who have up and dissapeared lately. We'll hold a torch up for y'all on this lil corner of the interwebs. Peace to all y'all.
