What’s fucked up is that a black or Hispanic should get the job after a fuck up like this. Omar Minaya should be GM until further notice.
imo with this GM debacle blacks and hispanics should stay as far away from this team as possible.
mets have historically been a lowkey racist organization( ask darryl strawberry, doc gooden, kevin mitchell, willie randolph)

george springer made the right decision going to the blue jays

Masahiro Tanaka returning to Japan after 7 seasons with New York Yankees

After seven years with the New York Yankees, free-agent right-hander Masahiro Tanaka announced Thursday he will return to Japan to pitch for the Rakuten Golden Eagles in the Nippon Professional Baseball League.

"I have decided to return to Japan and play for the Rakuten Eagles for the 2021 season," Tanaka wrote on Twitter. "I wanted to make sure and touch base with you, and thank you for all the love and support you have given me for the past 7 seasons."

"I feel extremely fortunate for having the opportunity to take the field as a member of the New York Yankees, and play in front of all you passionate fans. it has been an honor and a privilege! Thank you so much!!"

The 32-year-old, coming off a season in which he missed some time after being hit in the head by teammate Giancarlo Stanton's shot during live batting practice, just completed the final year of a $155 million, seven-year deal.

A two-time All-Star selection, the right-hander spent all seven of his MLB seasons as a Yankees starter from 2014 to 2020 and has been one of the most consistent starting pitchers in the majors over that span, going 78-46 in 173 starts.

EDITOR'S PICKS

Grading the Yankees' offseason? All depends on whom you ask
Tanaka posted a 3-3 record with a 3.56 ERA -- down from 4.45 in 2019 -- in 10 starts during the pandemic-shortened season of 2020.

Tanaka was found to have a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow during the 2014 season, and from then on the Yankees tried to give him extra rest between starts at times. He made a $22 million base salary in both the 2018 and 2019 seasons and $23 million in 2020.

Tanaka pitched well in the playoffs during his time in the Bronx, going 5-4 with a 4.18 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 15 walks in 10 starts over 54 innings. He had his best postseason run in 2017 when he went 2-1 with a 0.90 ERA, 18 strikeouts and three walks in 20 innings during the division series against Cleveland and American League Championship Series versus Houston.

Prior to joining the Yankees, Tanaka was 99-35 with a 2.30 ERA in seven seasons with the Rakuten Golden Eagles, striking out 1,238 in 1,315 innings.

Hank Aaron diversity fund starts with $2M in pledges from Atlanta Braves, MLB, players' association

The Atlanta Braves plan to honor Hank Aaron during the upcoming season, with the first of those initiatives being a $1 million donation to establish the Henry Louis Aaron Fund, which will work to increase minority participation among players, managers, coaches and front-office personnel.
That was an issue Aaron took a keen interest in throughout his life. He often criticized the lack of Black managers and general managers in Major League Baseball. He fretted that fewer Black people were playing the game.

"We want to continue Hank's amazing work in growing diversity within baseball now and in the years to come," Braves chairman Terry McGuirk said in a statement. "I believe this seed money is just the beginning for this growing fund and I'm certain other companies and organizations who have worked with Hank over the years will join us and add to this call to action to develop talent and increase the diversity on the field and in the front offices across the league."

The Braves' donation will be matched by $500,000 apiece from MLB and the players' association.

"Henry Aaron was a Hall of Fame player, a front office executive, a mentor, a colleague and a friend. In each of these roles, he was a tireless advocate for better representation of people of color throughout our sport," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "As a philanthropist and businessman, this celebrated power hitter was most passionate about empowering others. We are proud to honor his legacy through this joint donation to the Henry Louis Aaron Fund, and commit ourselves to continue building toward greater diversity and representation in the game Hank loved dearly."

Aaron, whose 755 career home runs long stood as baseball's all-time best, died last week from natural causes at the age of 86, and a memorial service in his honor was held Tuesday at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Report: Ex-New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway accused of sexual misconduct

9:30 PM ET
Mickey Callaway, the former New York Mets manager and current Los Angeles Angels pitching coach, has been accused by five women of inappropriate behavior that included sending shirtless photographs, a request for nude pictures and other advances, according to a report by The Athletic that was published Monday night.

The women, who spoke to The Athletic under the condition of anonymity, all worked in sports media at the time of their interactions with Callaway, which spanned five years and included his run as pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians. They detailed interactions in which they said Callaway sent lewd messages, inappropriately commented on their appearances and, in one instance, thrust his crotch near a woman's face while she attempted to conduct an interview.

In an emailed response to The Athletic, Callaway wrote: "Rather than rush to respond to these general allegations of which I have just been made aware, I look forward to an opportunity to provide more specific responses. Any relationship in which I engaged has been consensual, and my conduct was in no way intended to be disrespectful to any women involved. I am married and my wife has been made aware of these general allegations."

The allegations were publicized two weeks after ESPN reported on a string of explicit, unsolicited text messages sent by now-former Mets general manager Jared Porter to a female reporter in 2016, one of which included an image of an erect penis. Porter, who was working for the Chicago Cubs at the time of the messages, was fired by the Mets after the ESPN report last month.
Major League Baseball will begin an investigation into Callaway and said in a statement that it has "never been notified of any allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior" by him. In a statement, Angels spokeswoman Marie Garvey wrote: "The behavior being reported violates the Angels Organization's values and policies. We take this very seriously and will conduct a full investigation with MLB."

A Mets spokesperson told The Athletic that after hiring Callaway, the team had investigated an incident that occurred before he joined New York, but did not provide further details.

In a statement after the publication of The Athletic's report, Steve Cohen, who is only three months into his stint as Mets owner, wrote: "The conduct reported in The Athletic story today is completely unacceptable and would never be tolerated under my ownership."

Mets president Sandy Alderson, who hired Callaway in a prior stint as Mets GM, wrote: "I was appalled by the actions reported today of former manager Mickey Callaway. I was unaware of the conduct described in the story at the time of Mickey's hire or at any time during my tenure as General Manager. We have already begun a review of our hiring process to ensure our vetting of new employees is more thorough and comprehensive."

The Indians said in a statement that they were made aware of the allegations for the first time Monday night. "We are currently reviewing the matter internally and in consultation with Major League Baseball to determine appropriate next steps," the team said. "Our organization unequivocally does not condone this type of behavior. We seek to create an inclusive work environment where everyone, regardless of gender, can feel safe and comfortable to do their jobs."

One woman, who is based in New York, told The Athletic she received shirtless selfies from Callaway "two or three times a week for a month" in 2018 and that he would ask for naked pictures in return. Other times, she said, Callaway approached her in the dugout and massaged her shoulders. One of the texts from Callaway, according to The Athletic, read: "I bet you look yummy on tequila."

Another New York-based reporter said Callaway sent her more than a dozen emails beginning in April 2018, some of which came from his official Mets account, in which he commented on her physical appearance and invited her to meet socially. The reporter who said Callaway thrust his crotch near her face told The Athletic she received a video of him shirtless on a tractor, in addition to other photos.

According to The Athletic, several of the messages were unreturned, as were most of the invitations to meet socially. The interactions, according to The Athletic, made the women uncomfortable and, because of the dynamics, left them in a vulnerable position.

Callaway's pattern of behavior was so concerning that women in multiple MLB markets received warnings to be on guard around him, according to the report.
Callaway, 45, was hired as the Mets' manager in October 2017, following five seasons as the Indians' pitching coach, but was let go after going 163-161 and missing the playoffs in two years. He was then hired as the Angels' pitching coach under new manager Joe Maddon in October 2019.

Report: MLB slightly deadening baseball amid years-long home run surge
5:23 PM ET
  • Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball has slightly deadened its baseballs amid a years-long surge in home runs, a source confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday.

MLB anticipates the changes will be subtle, and a memo to teams last week cites an independent lab that found the new balls will fly 1 to 2 feet shorter on balls hit over 375 feet. Five more teams also plan to add humidors to their stadiums, meaning 10 of MLB's 30 stadiums are expected to be equipped with humidity-controlled storage spaces.

A person familiar with the note spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the memo, sent by MLB executive vice president of baseball operations Morgan Sword, was sent privately. The Athletic first reported the contents of the memo.

The makeup of official Rawlings baseballs used in MLB games has come under scrutiny in recent years. A record 6,776 homers were hit during the 2019 regular season, and the rate of home runs fell only slightly during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season -- from 6.6% of plate appearances resulting in homers in 2019 to 6.5% last year.

A four-person committee of scientists commissioned by MLB concluded after the 2019 season that baseballs had less drag on average than in previous seasons, contributing to the power surge. Their report blamed the spike in part on inconsistencies in seam height.

MLB's balls are hand-sewn by workers at Rawlings' factory in Costa Rica, leading to inevitable, minor deviations in production that can have sizeable repercussions.

The league mandates all baseballs have a coefficient of restitution (COR) -- essentially, a measure of the ball's bounciness -- ranging from .530 to .570, but in recent years the average COR had trended upward within the specification range.

In an effort to better center the ball, Rawlings has loosened the tension on the first of three wool windings within the ball. Its research estimates the adjustment will bring the COR down .01 to .02 and will also lessen the ball's weight by 2.8 grams without changing its size. The league does not anticipate the change in weight will affect pitcher velocities.

The memo did not address the drag of the baseball, which remains a more difficult issue to control.

The Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox already have humidors. The five teams adding humidors were not identified in the memo.

Los Angeles Angels agree to 2-year, $8.5 million deal with Shohei Ohtani
4:10 PM ET

The Los Angeles Angels and two-way player Shohei Ohtani agreed on a two-year, $8.5 million contract on Monday, a deal that provided both sides with cost certainty for two of Ohtani's three remaining arbitration years.

Ohtani and the Angels exchanged arbitration figures in January and the midway point was $2.9 million. The agreement, which avoids the need for a hearing, will pay Ohtani $3 million for his first arbitration year in 2021 and $5.5 million for his second in 2022. The pitcher and designated hitter from Japan will be arbitration-eligible again in 2023 before being scheduled for free agency.

Ohtani has only truly performed as a two-way player for the first two months of 2018 -- a stretch that preceded the torn ulnar collateral ligament that kept him from pitching for most of the next two years -- but first-year Angels general manager Perry Minasian said he will have "every opportunity" to resume that role in 2021.

The wide spectrum for his upcoming contributions made it tricky for Minasian and Ohtani's agent, Nez Balelo, to establish a reasonable salary figure for 2022.

"It was very difficult," Minasian said. "But I think that's where relationships come into play and communication comes into play, having an understanding of what the other side is looking at, and for ourselves, just kind of working together, both sides, coming to an agreement. It's a different type of player. There's not a lot of people that can do what this guy can do on a baseball field. For us to be able to come to a two-year agreement made a lot of sense."

Ohtani, 26, was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2018, providing a .925 OPS in 367 plate appearances and a 3.31 ERA in 51⅔ innings. He spent the 2019 season recovering from Tommy John surgery but batted .286/.343/.505 as the Angels' primary DH.
But he struggled during the shortened 2020 season, batting .190/.291/.366 in 175 plate appearances and recording only five outs in his first two starts before being diagnosed with a forearm strain.

Minasian wouldn't commit to any projections for how much Ohtani will pitch and hit this season but has continually lauded his offseason work.
"He's feeling great, he's ready to go," Minasian said. "Mentally, physically, he's definitely put in the work. And that's what's pretty impressive is just the amount of time and energy that this guy puts into his craft. When you combine that with the talent, I think we feel like he's going to be a huge part of this club and help us win games in multiple ways. We believe he's a difference-maker-type player."

Another former Mets employee, Ryan Ellis, accused of sexual harassment
By Brittany Ghiroli and Ken Rosenthal

Three women who either worked for or had previously been employed by the New York Mets approached the team in 2018 about the behavior of hitting performance coordinator Ryan Ellis, The Athletic has learned.

The women spoke to The Athletic and detailed Ellis' conduct, which included telling them that “I stare at your ass all the time” and that he wanted “to put her up against a wall,” along with other inappropriate language. Despite the allegations from the three women in 2018, Ellis remained with the organization until last month.

Shortly after the Mets fired general manager Jared Porter for sending dozens of harassing text messages to a female reporter, the team parted ways with Ellis, who had been serving as the team's major league hitting coordinator.

The Mets addressed Ellis’ exit in a statement to The Athletic, saying they received new information regarding his conduct. “We immediately commenced a new investigation and terminated the employee on January 22,” the statement read.

When the organization was asked about measures taken against Ellis following the complaints made in 2018, the Mets said Ellis was disciplined, including “probationary status” and counseling.

In addition to Ellis and Porter, former Mets manager Mickey Callaway has been accused by five women of sexual harassment.
