Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. trailer

When I first heard this, I thought it was Halle Berry....and I thought isn't she a little old. Then I was confused because it's live action.

Reddit’s Movie Forum Has to Lock The Little Mermaid Post Because of Extreme Racism

This lets you know how powerful images can be in society.
These folks feel slighted that a cartoon character isn't white.
Its the reason they push negative images in our communities.
They could give a fuck about a child of color seeing any hero of theirs destroyed at every turn

Racists Are Big Mad That A Black Girl Is Playing Ariel In ‘The Little Mermaid’

The social media racists are on full display today. This time, they're seething over Disney's announcement that Halle Bailey was chosen to portray the fictional mermaid, Ariel, in their live-action remake of the iconic animated film, The Little Mermaid.

While most of Black Twitter has been rejoicing over the incredible news, some bitter fans of the original fairytale movie have taken to the site to attempt to prove why the mythical creature, whose race plays no significance in her story, must be portrayed by a white actress.

Take a look, below:

Us white girls, who grew up with The Little Mermaid, deserved a true-to-color Ariel. Disney, you made a huge mistake by hiring Halle Bailey. This is going in the TRASH. pic.twitter.com/Oz1AxU7Ccy

  1. I want Ariel to be white ..... no hate to my skin or nth...

But that's how ive seen her since I was born.. white girl, red hair green tail...
    ☺this must be a joke!

While the hate for Disney's choice in the movie's lead actress is noticeable — and, frankly, expected — several Twitter users didn't sit by and allow it to overshadow Halle's incredible achievement. See how many came to her defense, below, and perfectly prove why Ariel could have been played by an actress of any race.

Racist Twitter's going to have to stay mad on this one.

Harry Styles in Talks to Play Prince Eric in Disney's Live-Action 'Little Mermaid'

Go on and kiss the girl.

Harry Styles is the latest actor to go under the sea.

The singer-turned-actor is in early negotiations to play the iconic role of Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

The pic, which is being directed by Rob Marshall, is in the throes of casting, having recently found its Ariel with R&B singer Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle fame. Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are also in talks to be part of Disney’s world.

Eric is the human prince who catches Ariel's eye. The mermaid saves the prince from drowning and then makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula to exchange her voice for legs in order for a chance to make him love her. He is key in the final battle against Ursula.

The casting of Styles and Bailey show the studio’s intent of making the music a central component of the remake. Interestingly, the character of Eric performed no songs in the 1989 animated original. That was remedied, however, in the 2000s Broadway musical, with Eric now performing several numbers, including two solos.

Disney will never have a black prince in any of their movies, a black prince doesn't push the narrative that white males are the only viable choice.
Sterling K. Brown is voicing a character in the upcoming Frozen sequel and I guarantee that he'll be a non-human mystical helper for the white people, or a white character but on the off chance that he is actually black, he'll be the villain.

And this is why I am NOT fucking with this, movie at all. Good luck to her, though.

Sorry, Harry stans. Reports of the former One Direction member and current object of desire for millions, Harry Styles, joining the cast of The Little Mermaid as Prince Eric were erroneous. Styles had definitely been fan cast a lot on social media, but Varietyreports that he declined the role. You may still, however, rejoice in Halle Bailey playing the titular role, and Melissa McCarthy filling the tentacles of Ursula. Rob Marshall is directing, with original composer Alan Menken creating some new songs for the soundtrack, which will have lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Other actors who have been listed as in talks for key roles include Javier Bardem as a potential King Triton, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay have reportedly been sought for Scuttle and Flounder.
