Actually she's from a fictional Kingdom called Atlantica.
And she's the Daughter of King Triton... The amatined film and the original Danish book were inspired but not directly linked to the Greek or Roman Mythologies...
A quick google search shows that Atlantica was an actually continent located from various 2 Ga cratons located in what is now West Africa and Eastern South America... which is now the South Atlantic Ocean.
You can make an argument that Disney is making the live action film more representative of the Geographical location... Possibility this might have been the original concept giving the Caribbean music influence... The actual fish don't even exit in the book...

Look, this Halle kid is something special. She has any and all the tools she needs to pull a great career off, its just the controversy. Look what it does to a youngun just starting out her career. I just dont see it as good casting.
I dont want to see Idris as Bond either. Even with all of Bond’s Jamaican roots, it just dont fit to me.
This is the same reason why I didn’t like Jordan Peele for Akira. On one hand i was happy for him to get the meeting to direct it but then I was like nah, let that pass fam. He’s not a good fit for that and his career can be killed from a misstep so soon in his directing journey.
I thought Mamoa would make a fantastic Lobo or a badass Kraven and instead... he ends up as... Aquaman. Folks love him but it still seems like weird casting to me.
I was wrong then, might be wrong now. They might can pull this off.
