Dave Chappelle says that while he’s a “fan” of erstwhile sketch comedy show Key & Peele, a lack of credit he received for its success has hurt his feelings.

Speaking to Gayle King during an interview on CBS This Morning to coincide with the release of Chappelle’s new Netflix comedy specials, Chappelle discussed the tension he feels with the Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key series, which aired on Comedy Central years after Chappelle’s Chappelle’s Show went off the air.

“When I did Chappelle’s Show, there were certain conventions of the show that the network resisted. I fought the network very hard so that those conventions could come to fruition,” Chappelle told King. “So like the first episode, I do that black white supremacist sketch. And it’s like, ‘Well, that’s 10 minutes long. It should be five minutes long.’ Why should it be five minutes long? Like, these types of conventions. I fought very hard. … So when I watch Key & Peele and I see they’re doing a format that I created, and at the end of the show, it says, ‘Created by Key & Peele,’ that hurts my feelings.”

Despite saying he likes the show, Chappelle has not always seemed terribly fond of his de facto successors. In a bit for his new Netflix comedy specials, he joked that for these past few years, “I had to watch Key & Peele do my show every night!”

Key and Peele have also followed Chappelle’s path in leaving Comedy Central behind for greener pastures. Peele recently directed the wildly acclaimed horror thriller Get Out, while Key recently starred in Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice.

Chappelle’s two stand-up specials The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas hit Netflix March 21

I understand what he's getting at. It's undeniably true and everyone should understand it. I think if Key & Peele never acknowledged that Dave blazed the path he'd have strong footing in his statements. I don't know that that's the case and I think it's definitely unrealistic to expect a production credit.

In any case... Dave is the motherfucking man.

He isn't going at them, in fact what he said isn't about them at all.

He's simply saying that it bothers him that he fought so hard with Comedy Central to do the type of show he wanted to (which Key and Peele ending up doing) only to watch other people benefit from it without the resistance or struggles he had to endure.

Dave Chappelle is a fat crack head now.
He saying he created that show format?
Nigga! I remember Benny Hill and Carol Burnett when I was in Jamaica.
I come to this country and there was SNL, Mad Tv, SCTV, Kids in the Hall etc.
What the fuck he talking about?

How does he know if the Key and Peele show we saw was what they wanted 100%?
They just and quit and leave to go to Africa.

He isn't saying that. He's saying that he sees them being allowed to do things that he didn't have the freedom to do or had to fight to do without the resistance he had to deal with because by the time Key and Peele did their show Chappelle Show had already proven to the network that their formula could work.

When Dave began Comedy Central hadn't done anything like that before so he had to fight to put that type of show on.

Yeah, its called being the first born child.

Fuck his struggle. Stepin Fechit paved the road for his self deriding act. And how they break ground? They capitalized when you ran from your comedy. Misunderstood clown. Great show tho.

So he is mad at them for the station now allowing them to do what he wanted to do? Chill Dave you got back to the paper. If anything get at them and get in a skit. Would be funny as hell.

If thats true then he could say that carlos mencia, sarah silverman and amy schumer are using the same format. Don't JUST hit on the brothas for doing what you started in 2003.

thats like the first dancing rapper being hurt by MC hammer for copying his style but says nothing about vanilla ice.

Divide and conquer.....
Cacs are Grand Masters of it.....
Keep silent and move on....
True. These guys had no idea Dave Chappelle stood on tables for that particular format. They were doing what they did and what they wrote. They had no inclination to Heap Praise on Dave Chappelle for their show.

It's like an NFL player today neglecting too give thanks to Reggie White, or for that matter, Curt Flood 4 the right and the ability to make millions of dollars in free agency. That's Petty Dave

not just the show but how he wanted shit done. i.e. the length of the skit. generally skits on sketch shows were short and sweet. he had a skit that was 10 plus minutes. he was not the inventor of it.;eddie murphy did that with white for a day skit for SNL, but this era david took the risks he is the fathers of the format and key and peele did.

Jealousy. Dude took his game BEHIND the camera. Same concept under the Horror genre. Its probably some shit he wanted to do first.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
my bad.

What the fuck he talking about?

they were political and discussed race issues..

thats news to me.....

those two you mentioned were classics no doubt but Dave Chap came at it from a whole different angle never done before on t.v..

and angle the streets gravitated to....

if there was an episode where the two you mention wouldve dared put on a klan suit or have a skit called the *******...

Id like to see it...

Peace,

I understand why cats are going at Dave; he's being petty. But let's face it: he's 100% correct. Key and Peele would not exist without Chappelle's Show.
mencia all them nigs his son..comedy central was pretty much worthless outside of south park and the man show..dave put that shit on the map and when he left they put a bunch of scabs on to try to replace his fire..it's been obvious since they tried to put that mexican nig on after he left..i always been calling all them nigs scabs

Funny. For some strange reason the 1st time I watched Get Out that one corny nigga at the party made me think of Dave.LoL.

OK, so what exactly should Key & Peele have do when the got their turn? Dave only understands one part of his struggle, he's not seeing the positive side that paved the way for these dudes and comedy in general.

man some dumb asses up in this discussion
so y'all wanted Dave to be a fake ass, but applaud him when his stand up is not fake
like you want to pick and choose and control this guy, like y'all the great big black overseers
