PHANTASM V:RAVAGER

th

Though billed as "the final chapter" in the Phantasm film series,it didnt quite feel like one really..was a so-so movie even if it did look as if it were a pilot episode for a online webseries

R.I.P Angus Scrimm(The Tall Man)

Boo! A Madea Halloween

I found out this movie took 6 days to make and costs 20 million dollars to produce.
I believe the first part the second not so much.
Ok first things first i did laugh several times and i applaud Tyler Perry for his portrayal of multiple characters.
This film looks cheap it's grainy and badly edited. The acting is terrible but no wonder, Perry got half of the people in this film from YouTube.
Most of the time it feels like one of his sitcom's all it's missing is the canned laughter,it also reminded me of why i dont watch any of his sitcoms.
A be respectful, and honor your parents and elders message is jammed in between the jokes.
20 million to make this ?!? It must have been in the marketing or someone pocketed the cash.

Checked out Snowden on Sunday and enjoyed it. Well-acted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as he's in nearly every scene, and a legit supporting cast in Tom Wilkinson, the always-fuckable Shailene Woodley who needs to be bustin' that pussy wide open for WGOL and BGOL, Melissa Leo, Nicolas Cage, Scott Eastwood, and more. The crowd seemed to be into it and stayed for the end credits. Held peoples' interest throughout.

DOCTOR STRANGE

Doctor Strange the Sorcerer Supreme gets his big screen debut and it's quite a debut.
Benedict Cumberbatch is perfectly cast as Strange. An arrogant but extremely gifted doctor his life is completely turned around after a car accident destroys the nerves in his hands.Hoping to restore his once steady hands he journeys to Kathmandu, Nepal in order to restore them.
There he finds Ancient One who opens up whole new worlds and dimensions to him and a new destiny that will also put the villain Kaecilius on his new path in life

Doctor Strange is highly entertaining and very well acted, everyone truly gives their all.
Sometimes in films like this the romance can be a bit lacking but in this film the bond and relationship between Strange and Christine Palmer(Rachel McAdams) A fellow surgeon of Strange really works because of some particularly strong scenes between the two.
Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo turns in a strong performance as does Benedict Wong as Wong with some nice touches of humor.
There was some controversy in the casting of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One but all murmuring and disapproval should fade after watching her performance.

The SFX are beautiful, flawless eye popping, and glorious. So much eye candy and then some.I expect the people behind the SFX to get several awards, for providing such a surreal ,mesmerizing head trip.

The flaws: I would have liked to have seen Kaecilius fleshed out more even though Mads Mikkelsen gives his best with what he had to work with.
I have watched a lot of super hero films and T.V shows featuring legendary characters and at times i have been dissapointed because either the character doesnt take a hold of his powers or strengths until the end of the film or show.
In Doctor Strange it felt a little rushed as the character somewhat easily takes a hold of his new strengths.
Sure i know i want watching a NETFLIX series with 13 episodes for development and i know a lot has to be done in a 2 hour running time but i would have like to have seen more of a struggle to grasp the new mystic arts.

In the end i was highly entertained and Doctor Strange will easily fit right in with the other characters that reside in the Marvel cinematic universe.

HACKSAW RIDGE

Despite his personal problems and crazy rants,Mel Gibson is a good director.I remember back in 1995 my videotape of the film Braveheart went around the office several times and we all raved about it.Gibson proves again that he has the Directors eye in Hacksaw Ridge.
This true story of Desmond T. Doss a conscientious objector who still wanted to serve his country as a medic during World War II but refused to carry a gun is very good.
I started to view Doss as "Job" like especially when everyone was telling him even the love of his life Dorothy Schutte (Teresa Palmer) Just do this one thing and everything will be over with !!
I admired Doss's principles but i also wanted him to prove himself to his fellow soldiers and commanding officers,i wanted them to respect him.
The romance in the film works and there are good performances all around. It was great to see Vince Vaughn stretch his acting muscles
Hugo Weaving turns in a terrific performance as Doss's father Tom.He actually made me feel something for a person who wasnt a great human being and likely didnt win any father of the year awards
The battle scenes are intense, gory and harrowing,i could tell the audience i saw the film with was a bit overwhelmed by the violence.
The film is a bit cliched and predictable turns happen here and there an there were some odd quirks in Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Doss in the beginning of the film but fortunately that fades away.
Gibson gives the film a moving epilogue and has definitely presented one of the bright lights in film making in 2016

ARRIVAL

Just a warning.Dont go into this film expecting to see Independence Day or even Close Encounters of The Third Kind.
This falls more in line with the film Contact. Amy Adams portrays Dr. Louise Banks, the best linguist in the U.S
She's asked by the U.S Army to decipher the language of the aliens inside the ships dubbed "Shells".
The main questions they want answers to why are they here ? and What do they want? They want the answers fast and they are definitely on the edge of shooting first and asking the aforementioned questions later.
I loved how this film focuses on communication and how it's really a key factor in everything
It's truly what brings people together and in this film hopefully world's together.

Amy Adams is terrific in the film.I easily felt something for her character early on,and as she reaches out to the aliens.
Forest Whitaker is quite good as Colonel Weber, a senior no nonsense US military officer.
And though he fades into the background a few times Jeremy Renner does well as Ian Donnelly, a military astrophysicist.
Now the pacing in the film is very slow,it actually tried my patience but i felt the pay off revelation outweighed my problems with the pacing

Arrival is not on the same levels of greatness as Director Denis Villeneuve's Sicario and Prisoners but it's a great looking film,he actually borrows a bit from Terrence Malick for some scenes, and it definitely evokes questions about one's path in life and embracing love, and the pain that comes with it during anyone's time on Earth.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

ALMOST CHRISTMAS

I admit i went into this movie with low expectations.I knew J. B. Smoove would be funny and how bad could be to see the
gorgeous Keri Hilson up on the big screen? The trailer had left me with the been there done that feeling .It actually reminded me of 2007's This Christmas(wow has it been that long ago?)
But i was pleasantly surprised ! After the passing of the family matriarch the family patriarch Walter (an excellent Danny Glover) a retired automotive engineer
who attempts to bring his family together nearly a year after his beloved wife's passing for Christmas. This includes his daughters: Kimberly Elise as Cheryl Meyers
Gabrielle Union as Rachel, his son's: Romany Malco as Christian and Jessie Usher as Evan, along with their children and spouses.
Mo'Nique as Aunt May really has the best salty comedic lines ,though J. B. Smoove comes in a close second as a laugh provider.
There are good heartfelt moments and performances including one from Jessie Usher who has been mainly flat in other films and T.V shows.
Yes the film is ultra cliched at times, and some scenes have that hollow stiffness to them. It's the usual, sisters fighting, old neighborhood love sniffing around and
infidelity lurking around the corner stuff.
The film's heart is in the right place though and people will definitely see themselves in the characters, right down to trying to duplicate and old family recipe.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Jack Reacher is what Jules from Pulp Fiction stated he was going to do with the rest of his life.I'll just walk the earth. You know, walk the earth, meet people... get into adventures. Like Kane in Kung Fu.
Tom Cruise is Reacher hitchiking like David BaNner in the The Hulk T.V series he helps Cobie Smulders as Major Susan Turner a former major himself, round up
some human traffic baddies, and is supposed to hook up with her for a meal and maybe something else but it's sidelined after she's set up,and he's set up
too as he attempts to help her.
Oh throw in a young woman who may be his daughter and the lackluster adventure begins
I enjoyed the action sequences and Cruise kicks a lot of ass,but the story just never really gets going and things are set up to prolong the story.
I hoped that Reacher would at least get it on with Susan but they just talk about it...but maybe they did because i fell asleep for about ten minutes.Speaking of sleep i dont know what Cruise was going through when making this flick but man did he look tired in a few scenes.

Wait for cable

Anthropoid

This movie is one of the best World War II films ever IMO. Soul stirring action coupled with stellar performances It tells the story of Operation Anthropoid, the World War II assassination of Reinhard Heydrich by Exile Czechoslovak soldiers on May 27, 1942
It's intense and graphic and there are quiet and dramatic moments that hit as hard as the action sequences.
High praise to the entire cast which includes: Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan, Harry Lloyd, Toby Jones, Charlotte Le Bon and Bill Milner

Scale of 1-10 a 10

Manchester by the Sea

Manchester by the Sea is an examination of seperating from grief but fortunately there's a lot of humor around it's edges.
At the core of the film are the stories of people trying to disconnect from their grief, feelings, the past, guilt and responsibility.
Casey Affleck as Lee Chandler is incredible in the film portraying a man that is functioning but lost ,striking out whenever he wallows in his own misery.
Michelle Williams as Randi, Lee's ex-wife is sensational and her emotional unloading in a scene with Affleck is incredible.
Lucas Hedges as Patrick Chandler Lee's nephew was a revelation to me and should have a long career ahead of him.
I like the fact that even when facing an impending life changing matter the character's that inhabit the film also find the humor
in it,along with the tears and raw emotion

The film isnt linear .mainly through flashbacks do we see the connection, the closeness and the tragedies and it's very impactful.
The film also displays how only through a few key words or actions they can still strike a devestating blow.
My only problem with the film was the music. At times i felt it was overdone and amped up in such a way that it took me out of certain moments in the film

High praise to Kyle Chandler ,Gretchen Mol,Tate Donovan,C.J. Wilson,Kara Hayward Erica McDermott,Anna Baryshnikov
and a surprise cameo from a well known actor their talents definitely dont go unnoticed.
This film is extremely award worthy and will definitely win plenty of them in the coming months.

The Edge of Seventeen

Teenage angst returns to the big screen in the film The Edge of Seventeen Everything that can go wrong to Nadine Byrd
happens and just adds to her awkward years.Hailee Steinfeld portrays her to a wonderful
Coupled with it's good humor and salty language is a good story of how someone can be so caught up in their own selth loathing and and anger at the world that they dont see what their relatives,or friends are going through .and sometimes they dont realize that there are people genuinely interested in them and that care about them. This can also lead to assumptions about someone else's life.
I thank the writers for not making Nadines brother Darian portrayed by Blake Jenner a one note character.
Woody Harrelson as Mr. Bruner,Nadines history teacher who is filled with wit and sarcasm and helps Nadine along is terrific
Kudos to Kyra Sedgwick ,Hayden Szeto and Haley Lu Richardson
The film has a cliched outline that cant be ignored but it's a very good examination of growing up with dramatic changes, and opening up
your eyes to what's around you.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Almost a century before Harry Potter there was Newt Scamander: a wizard, the future author of the textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and an employee at the Ministry of Magic.
While in 1926 New York several creatures escape from his suitcase as he attempts to reattain them he enters the lives through various ways of
Porpentina "Tina" Goldstein,Jacob Kowalski and Queenie Goldstein.Though the beasts are his main focus his search will lead to something sinister stirring in the city

For all of the moments of whimsy, wonder, humor and adventure it was the darkness of the Harry Potter films that drew me in,and i found the same attraction in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander portrays introverted shyness to a T.
Katherine Waterston ,Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol fit right into the time period and hit al the right notes of determination, humor and romance.
Colin Farrell ,Ezra Miller and Samantha Morton bring just the right amoutn of a dark edge to the table.

The film sets itself up in a way that leads to some very predictable moments. Some scenes were grating and the pacing could have been faster in the middle.
The SFX are incredible though and revelations are hinted at that im looking forward to seeing in future films.

Nocturnal Animals

This is a film that shouldnt work, but it does and it's one of the best of 2016.
In this story of art gallery owner Susan Morrow receives the manuscript of a novel penned by her estranged ex-husband Edward Sheffield along with an invitation for dinner
As she reads it she and the audience starts to see the parallels of her former life with him.
This is one of the best stories i have ever seen about betrayal, loss, love and revenge
Its well acted by :Amy Adams,Jake Gyllenhaal ,Michael Shannon ,Aaron Taylor-Johnson,Isla Fisher
Armie Hammer ,Laura Linney ,Andrea Riseborough and Michael Sheen
Usually i find the story within a story films obnoxious but director Tom Ford blends everything so well that both
stories are intriguing and razor sharp.
It's also visually stunning .I cant recall another film in 2016 that has actually blown me away visually without the use of SFX.
I definitely wont be shocked to see this film end up with awards and on the top ten lists of 2016 of many critics.
Tom Ford please dont wait another 7 years before you make another film

ALLIED

World War II never looked so good in the love in the time of war film Allied
Well acted by Brad Pitt as Max Vatan a Canadian soldier who partners with a French Resistance fighter named Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard in all her seductive and glamourous glory)
Bullets fly,and their hearts become intertwined and the two marry but Vatan is informed his beloved wife may be a double agent working for the Nazis
The suspenseful action scenes really drove me to the edge of my seat.I did feel something for Vatan as he attempts to find out the truth at times putting love before duty
I could definitely tell Director Robert Zemeckis has great love for the film Casablanca sometimes the nods are slight sometimes so bold i felt like i was being beaten over the head with them
At times the pacing of the film slows to a crawl .
In the end Allied is a very good story with just enough suspense and fevered action to recommend seeing it at the theatre.

Moana

Disney has given the world another spirited, brave heroine in the animated film Moana who seeks out the demi God Maui to help restore her island
Great voice work by all involved :Auli'i Cravalho as Moana Waialiki, the daughter of a village chief. Louise Bush as the singing voice of young Moana,Dwayne Johnson as Maui, a legendary shapeshifting demigod who sets off with Moana on her journey.Rachel House as Gramma Tala, Moana's grandmother. Like Moana, Tala shares a passion for the ocean.Temuera Morrison as Chief Tui Waialiki, Moana's overprotective father and chief of Motunui Island,Christopher Jackson as the singing voice of Tui and Nicole Scherzinger as Sina Waialiki, Moana's mother and Tui's wife
This film has some of the most vivid animation i have ever seen on the big screen.Hats off to the artists and animators i really appreciate their hard work
My problems with the film are that some of the musical numbers are kind of stiff and the story is very predictable at times.
Disney does have another hit on it's hands though it's funny with all the right amounts of heart.

Bad Santa 2

The dirty and salty jokes and visuals are all there in Bad Santa 2 ,but this is probably one of the most low energy comedies i have ever seen
I did laugh here and there There are to many moments without laughs and everyone mainly sleepwalks for a quick paycheck.
There most likely wont be a Bad Santa 3 unless it goes straight to DVD and Billy Bob Thornton is replaced by Larry the Cable Guy

Scale of 1-10 a 4

BAD WORDS

Jason Bateman is outstanding in Bad Words a film he also Directed. If you like black comedies like Bad Santa this is right up
your alley. This is the tale of a 40 year old proof reader named Guy Trilby who finds a loophole in The National Spelling Bee so he can compete with 10 to 13 year olds.Bateman has so much chemistry with Rohan Chand as a 10-year-old named Chaitanya Chopra a fellow top speller he takes under his wing you would think the two have been working together for years.Writer Andrew Dodge provides plenty of salty and stinging dialogue
and comes up with situations that are extremely funny.Though the reason behind Trilby's Spelling Bee quest is pretty basic
and predictable, the film is uplifted by a completely game cast that includes Kathryn Hahn,Allison Janney, Kimleigh Smith, and
Philip Baker Hall.

Gangsta's Paradise was a good movie that I saw on youtube. Click on this link:

That movie Snowden was under rated. That type of spying and helping these devils to lock the world down should not be over looked. I watched the documentary about this. It was amazing that one of these people had a device that is amazing if it can be introduced to the public. One of the people from NSA had some kind of device and I do not thing that fool was suppose to let anyone know about it but he was on the subway and some dude was on there texting. The device picked up everything he was texting and he actually told him what he was texting and to who. If CNN got a hold of the victim in this they probably would not run a story about it.
And this stuff is not new. They have found things that usually are kept secret from the masses. There have been things that have been invented that has been kept hid from the masses.
Right now we are living at the mercy of handlers. And the masses specifically blacks are raising their kids to stay under the control of the masses or overseers.
I hate to see this but it is possible that watching television programs the mind. It is possible that they may program the mind to do what it sees the people in the movie do or some other programming. In the 60's and 70's they had did subliminal mind suggestions experiments at movie theaters. In the old movie theaters they had 2 reals to show the whole movie. There was a break in the middle of the movies to change the reels. What they did was put a subliminal mind suggestion in the movie to tell the people to go buy refreshments. Well when they put the subliminal message in the movie the sells of the refreshments went up over 60 percent. Which meant that it worked. Some have even credited the subliminal mind suggestions to commercials to the rise of the use of cocaine. The commercial by coca cola that states coke it's the real thing, what the world wants to day.

FENCES

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play by August Wilson FENCES is the character study of a flawed but charismatic man named
Troy Maxson.
This character study is for the most part extremely dramatic with humor around it's edges
As the film plays out it is displayed how sometimes when someone selfishly pursues their own happiness, they forget about the people
beside them that are longing for happiness too.
A person can bring all the bitterness of a life denied and unfufilled into a relationship and also while being a parent.
Sometimes love and care are not displayed through hugs, kisses or even encouragement but through guidance.
Troy may be denied by the times he lives in but he's also an enemy to himself.
His wife Rose is always the loving buffer between him and his son's Cory and Lyon's
There are great performances from the entire cast which include : Denzel Washington as Troy Maxson,Viola Davis as Rose Maxson
Stephen McKinley Henderson as Jim Bono ,Jovan Adepo as Cory Maxson, Russell Hornsby as Lyons Maxson, Mykelti Williamson as Gabriel Maxson and Saniyya Sidney as Raynell Maxson.
The film's only flaw in my opinion is that it cant shake that stage play stiffness and this is often the case when bringing a stage play to the big screen
but in the end it's the performances laced which so much raw emotion that propel it past this flaw, performances which will surely gain plenty of award nominations.

ROGUE ONE : A STAR WARS STORY

Can a Star Wars film without all f the main characters we have come to know for almost 40 years have the same appeal?...in a word
YES
This is actually one of the best Star Wars films ever to be produced.
The best character development and performances comes in the form of Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, a rogue maverick detained by the Empire.
Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, a Rebel Alliance Intelligence officer.
Some characters are underdeveloped but still left an impression ,(Donnie Yen as Chirrut Îmwe, a blind warrior who believes in the Force. Alan Tudyk as K-2SO, (providing the most humor) a Rebel-owned Imperial enforcer droid whose memory is wiped by Andor
Riz Ahmed as Bodhi Rook, a former Imperial pilot who defects to the Rebels. and Jiang Wen as Baze Malbus, a Rebel warrior, mercenary and partner of Chirrut Îmw )so much so i wanted the team to gel and complete their mission.

This film actually gives The Rebellion more depth .It wasnt always squeaky clean, hey let's stop the oppresive Empire
Ben Mendelsohn hits all the right sinister notes as Orson Krennic, the Director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial Military
There are so many new creatures and droids, and the action sequences are flawless and beyond thrilling.
The film definitely reminded me why Darth Vader is one of the best villains ever !!

The pacing is a bit off at times and the motion capture CGI was very distracting it actually looked like one of those animated characters from
Star Wars Rebels
In the end this is a rousing and moving adventure I would place Rogue One between The Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens.
I actually wanted to go home and watch A New Hope afterwards ....what? it's airing on TNT all week....YESSSSSS !!!!!!

PATRIOTS DAY

Director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg team up for the third time for the film Patriot's Day
It's about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the subsequent terrorist manhunt that went on for 4 days
This is one of the best docu dramas i have ever seen
I applaud the actors for completely immersing themselves in their roles ,so much so i didnt recognize some of them
until the credits listing
There were facts about the bombing and manhunt that i had forgotten
Berg flawlessly blends real footage with reenactments of the shootouts, carnage and bombings
This is a bold, riveting and effective film and one of the best of 2016

PASSENGERS

I was reallly looking forward to this Cast Away/Lost In Space romantic adventure. The cast is appealling and there are some really incredible SFX in the film, but there are a couple of dissapointing turns in the story
Something happened 30 minutes in that took me out of the film,i actually looked at the floor and said well let's see of they can pull me back in,and in a lot of ways it accomplished that with some great romantic and charming moments.
Nothing felt forced or tacked on.
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt made their passion, anger and conflict believable,i believe the film redeemed itself here and there ,actually making me question what i would have done in certain situations the characters find themselves in.

ASSASIN'S CREED

Going in i knew nothing about the video game on which the movie is based. The ads for the game always looked cool to me though, and the trailer for the film looked great, and come on look at this cast :Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard,Jeremy Irons,Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling,Michael K. Williams !! but this film is a major dissapointment.
Ok first things first ,the actors do their best with the script. The look of the film was sleek, and the action sequences were fun.
As the story plays out i found my mind drifting, thinking about what i was going to eat after the movie.
I became bored with it
I was so into the scenes that took place in the 1400's but for some reason the director and writers thought it would be cool to constantly keep switching back to Callum Lynch (Fassbender) in the Animus apparatus, and displaying computer screens with some weird patterns on them.
At first the story made sense and then it goes another way and i just didnt care anymore.
Plus there are blatant errors in a couple of scenes so i guess someone forgot something in the editing room
Maybe people that are into the game will like it more than i did.

Some lower key movies

Snowden was a lot better than I thought it would be

Miss Sloane was pretty good too. I think some of the bad reviews it's gotten are from the right.

Arrival was just ok to me. I wanted to like it more than I did.

God this was an amazing movie. I had never seen the play. Strong performances by everyone involved. Oscar worthy even. Very heavy subjects so be ready to be a lil depressed. But it is an excellent movie. I hope people support this. It deserves our money.

Scale of 1-10 a 9

One of THE BEST movies of the past 5 years.

Blue Ruin

Very slow burn but powerful with a few very intense scenes.

1-10 Id give it a solid 9

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Scale of 1-10 a 4

fences was pretty good

Some lower key movies

Snowden was a lot better than I thought it would be

Miss Sloane was pretty good too. I think some of the bad reviews it's gotten are from the right.

Arrival was just ok to me. I wanted to like it more than I did.

God this was an amazing movie. I had never seen the play. Strong performances by everyone involved. Oscar worthy even. Very heavy subjects so be ready to be a lil depressed. But it is an excellent movie. I hope people support this. It deserves our money.

Rating of 1 - 10: 10

Just watched this off your recommendation. Really enjoyed it !!!

Thanks for the recent reviews and recommendations, everyone. Happy new year to all.

ELLE

In the movie ELLE Isabelle Huppert is Michèle Leblanc a video game producer who is raped in her home. She doesnt call the authorities. For a period of time she doesnt even tell friends or family members. What follows is intriguing and then some.

At first i was taken aback by the casual it is what it is,and it was what it was mindset of the main character in the film, but then her layered past was slowly revealed and in life people that go through traumatic experiences do act out in uncommon ways.So i accepted the path she took.

The film is laced with dark humor coupled with a sharp and salty script. There is so much depth to the film it was highly entertaining I actually would love to see it again soon

Isabelle Huppert deserves an Oscar nomination for her raw, stoic and strong performance
Elle is definitely one of the most interesting and best movies of 2016

LIVE BY NIGHT

In Live By Night Ben Affleck is Joe Coughlin a war vet turned thief who makes the ultimate mistake of falling in love with the girlfriend of a mob kingpin Albert White, plus his father Thomas is a police captain.
He hooks up with another mob kingpin and enemy of Whites named Maso Pescatore and slowly comes into his own

Live By Night is good when it's good and bad when it's bad .
The pacing at times is incredibly slow and some characters are completely stiff. There are sparks of life throughout the movie though and there are great moments in the story especially the relationship and tug of war Joe has with a once heroin addicted young woman named Loretta Figgis(Elle Fanning) and is now a devout tent preacher who preaches over the ills Joe's casino will bring to the Tampa Florida area.
I wish the film had more moments like this.
So much is referred to and not seen leading me to think a lot of this movie was cut and it definitely could have given the film more depth
It's not a bad movie by any means but definitely lacks the power and interesting narrative of Affleck's previously directed films

Scale of 1-10 a 7½
