HIDDEN FIGURES

I was very moved when i read Katherine Johnson's biography about a month ago,so i was very excited to finally see her story play out in part on the big screen in Hidden Figures
This story of the African-American mathematician Katherine Johnson and her two colleagues, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson working at NASA at the beginning of the space race is compelling and then some
These beyond intelligent women excelled despite the racism and segregated laws of the time.
All three leads Taraji P. Henson,Octavia Spencer,Janelle Monáe are given time to stand out,Kevin Costner also turns in a great performance.
I am happy that the story avoids going down cliched paths, but there were a couple of moments that i felt were a bit forced and white washed.
In the end i left the theatre feeling so much pride for these women that never backed down from their goals and what they wanted to achieve in life

WHY HIM?

It's father vs new boyfriend in Why Him? The story may be basic but fortunately this movie is blessed with funny actor's and a script that works for most of the movies duration.
Filled with sight gags and the hysterical mannerisms of all involved it all equals to some great laugh out loud moments .
The movie does run out of steam during it's last 15 minutes but there is so much fun to be had beforehand

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Underworld: Blood Wars

Underworld: Blood Wars is basically more of what weve already seen.New allies and new enemies come down Selene's path
as she try's to avoid being captured by the vampire and lycan covens
Kate Beckinsale still gives the role her all ,and there are some great action sequences.
There are some uninvolving and boring subplot's and some of the SFX were extremely choppy.
If you are a fan of the Underworld series you have likely seen this new chapter already, but if your a casual fan wait for cable

Scale of 1-10 a 6½

MISCONDUCT

This is one of those frustrating film's in which the first half is so good and involving it's unbelievable how it descends into something so bad and laughable
I understood the motivations and actions of some characters, but other characters that inhabit the film the moves they make made absolutely no sense
If someone accomplishes something why would they decide to do something that will alter all they worked for?
The film is great to look at and was so engaging but it's like the writers either gave up or maybe they changed writer's in the middle of filming.

Agreed. Always got to budget that time accordingly. A longer movie is like watching 2 shorter movies, or 3 tv episodes.

We're waiting for the returns of The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, Survivor, and Stranger Things.

Also need to get caught up a few seasons on House of Cards.

Gonna aim to get more movies in these next few weeks/months.

What do ya'll recommend in terms of theatre-based, downloading, or streaming movies to close out 2007? What should a muthafucka check out

THEATRE

Had free passes through http://www.airmiles.ca rewards and checked out the following flicks with fam' in the past 2 weeks, and enjoyed them all:

- INTO THE WILD
- NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN :yes:
- SWEENEY TODD - THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET

DVD RENTALS

What's worthwhile in checking out from the local mom and pops shop, or the bigger chains and shit? I've got 5 free rentals remaining at Blockbuster that I need to use up in the first 1/2 of 2008. Rented a few so far in the past month ... most recently SICKO.

Should a muthafucka bother :smh::confused: and use up the other freebies on the likes of ...

- PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN III
- SHREK III
- ALPHA DOG
- FANTASTIC FOUR II - RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER
- what else
- Or just wait it out and rent AMERICAN GANGSTER, I AM LEGEND and other shit (instead of just checking it online)
fences movie the bomb , a must see check it out on yes.com

Patriots Day - Saw it yesterday. Pretty intense. They did a good job with the various camera angles leading up to and during the marathon itself (helicopter, drone, street level, motorcycle, by car, from the buildings looking out, surveillance footage, etc). The firefight/shootout with police? Good Lord - went on for several minutes at close range. Condolences to the victims and their families of the bombing attack.

A MONSTER CALLS

A MONSTER CALLS is an emotional rollercoaster .A story about dealing with the thoughts of loss
Lewis MacDougall as Conor O'Malley acts everyone else off the screen he definitely deserves several awards for his performance
Toby Kebbell as Conor's father, also does a fine job.Felicity Jones as Lizzie O'Malley, displays all the right emotions as
a loving mother
Great voice work by Liam Neeson as the "Monster"
High praise also to the make up artists.
The film does feel rather repetitive at times and Sigourney Weaver 's accent seems to have an on an off switch throughout the movie
By the end you will either be on the verge of tears or shedding a tear or two

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Sleepless

Jamie Foxx returns to the big screen in Sleepless as a corrupt cop named Vincent Downs who along with his partner steal a stash of cocaine from a drug lord and a casino owner.Soon after Downs son is kidnapped and wont be returned until the drugs are returned,
Michelle Monaghan portrays Jennifer Bryant an internal affairs officer hot on Downs's trail.

I had a lot of fun with this movie, despite its flaws it moves fast, the action is sleek and it has a good amount of humor.
Plus it's beautifully shot, the aerial shots of Las Vegas are incredible.
There are big plot holes, predictable turns and some silliness around it's edges but not bd for a January release

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Zac Efron,Adam Devine,Anna Kendrick, and Aubrey Plaza have such great chemistry in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
i can almost get past any faults the movie has.
In the movie the parents of
Dave (Zac Efron) and Mike Stangle (Adam Devine) attempt to reign in their usual crazy antics
at every family function that causes some type of small disaster.Thinking if the brother's can get respectable ladies to attend the next
big event which is their sister's wedding they will be nice and calm.
Unfortunately the brothers are duped by Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) who just want a free trip to Hawaii and are anything
but who they claim to be

As i aforementioned the chemistry between the quartet is off the charts couple this with some great sequences in which the brother's
interview potential dates, and a funny as hell cab ride with the ladies and the film has some really great laugh out loud moments.
Sight gags are also a big factor with a standout being a completely over the top massage

There are some stiff and stalling moments and the film starts to run out of gas in it's last 20 minutes, but i still thouroughly enjoyed this raunchy
comedy

Lotta hidden messages in this movie.
Predators, Night Crawlers, government planted drugs in the community, various stereotypes.
Even a Breaking Bad reference.

all these 9 and 10's being given out tho

I appreciate the OPs dedication to the thread. But you can't be so liberal with these scores and expect the reviews to be taken seriously.

IMO, Any score over 8.5 is a rare bird. Hell, in a year, you probably have 1 movie that gets near a 8.5 or higher.

Personally, I don't think I've ever seen a 9.5-10 score movie. EVER!!!

xXx: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE

th

Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident*, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.

*=Wouldv'e loved some kind of explanation at least as to how he survived said incident IMO..

Vin Diesel and Samuel L.Jackson cash their paychecks for this return to the XXX series, which now seems to be following the lines of the later Tom Cruise M:I films(Xander now has a team backing him up).. one of those standard"turn off your brain and enjoy" films

SCORE: 7 out of 10

Obviously a lot of bias votes on IMDB

This movie is not good.

The first hour drags on for what seems like forever.
Picks up in the second hour but by then I had lost interest.

The story is about portugese ministries during the christian persecution in japan...
portrays the white man as noble and resilient and the Japanese as mean savages
I am tired of the white saviour story...
and when the japanese protagonist was explaining his motives, i found myself agreeing with him
if not his methods...

movie 5.5/10

SPLIT

Director M. Night Shyamalan brings another unique story to the big screen that definitely redeems his career as a film director.
SPLIT is intense,interesting and involving.
The story set's its self up as something simple but traes of complexity form around its narrative when we are introduced to Dennis(James McAvoy),
who kidnaps 3 high school girls Claire (Haley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula) and outsider Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy)
McAvoy gives the performance of a lifetime as a man with dissociative identity disorder (DID) and has has 23 prominent personalities
Anya Taylor-Joy also gives her all in a magnetic performance.
Betty Buckley as Dr. Karen Fletcher, a psychologist to Dennis who attempts to figure out if Dennis has remained stable, and tries to figure out what he's been up to.

By the time the film enters its last 20 minutes,i had to ask why is this happening? How is this possible? And i was definitely going to rant and complain
about a character but oh boy Shyamalan had an ace up his sleave and i definitely let out a couple of joyful colorful metaphors.
My only problem with the film is the pacing and a few scenes should have been sharper or edited out,but this is a great movie and Mr. Shyamalan
.......more please !!!!!!!!!

THE FOUNDER

I love a success story and The Founder drew me in immediately with it's story about the famous Mcdonald's fast food franchise.
Maurice "Mac" McDonald (John Carroll Lynch) and the intuitive Richard "Dick" McDonald (Nick Offerman) are the brothers who came up with the fast burger and fries idea and it's so interesting how they came up with their efficient idea and the film sharply displays it.
Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) was a traveling salesman selling Prince Castle brand milkshake makers in 1954 came in contact with the brothers due to his sales of the milkshake makers to them.He re introduced the idea of expansion to them, contracts were signed and Kroc did the leg work and found multiple investor's and took the McDonald's brothers ball and ran with it.

Lynch and Offerman are great in their roles.
Keaton's performance makes Kroc a likeable person, and if one can admire anything about him,it was his efficiency, care for quality and customers, and unrelenting spirit to succeed
The film definitely shows his dark side as he slowly but surely pushed the brother's to the sidelines, plus a dark turn in his personal life

The film definitely avoids some situations that could have given the film some more emotional moments.
In the end its definitely a lesson on how cold and calculating big business is and can be

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Startting with a ridiculous plot about using satellites as weapons of mass destruction,i pretty much knew what i was going to get with this flick
Vin Diesel still has enough charismatic swagger to sell the role, but he's coupled with a terrible script, beautiful but obnoxious women, characters with obnoxious ticks, and some of the worst and cheesiest CGI i have ever seen.
I can definitely see the push to turn this into a multiple movie franchise like Fast and The Furious but it likely wont happen, but then again those foreign markets give films like this a giant boost.

There is some fun around it's edges with some good fights, stunts and bad guys who get whats coming to them.

Anything that could have given this film any type of emotion is completely obliterated with a wink and a smile.
This movie has wait for cable written all over it

Oh man

dont let me get my hopes up for An M. Night Shyamalan movie

We saw The Accountant on Thursday evening. Enjoyed it. Good cast and the action sequences were exciting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Accountant_(2016_film)
I'm watching the accountant right now. Great fucking movie. I suggest it to people who like action as well as thinking movies. They Mumble a lot in this movie so you're going to have to have your volume up, but it is well worth the watch, and the fighting scenes are pretty spectacular. Great cast

Enjoyed those scenes when he was writing out the numbers and equations at the office. Reminded me a bit of A Beautiful Mind.

Gonna see Hacksaw Ridge tonight.

Aiming to see Hidden Figures, La La Land and others in the next few weeks.

Saw Hidden Figures. Loved it. But back to The Accountant, I loved the couple twists they had in there. No, I'm not gonna spoil it, although when they brought the alien in it kinda killed the mood (kidding).

Saw Hacksaw Ridge yesterday. 1st half of the movie was primarily story and build-up. 2nd half was pure chaotic intensity. Sensory overload. Held our interest throughout.

GOLD

Gold is another movie that DOES NOT belong in the January bad movie dumping ground.
Matthew McConaughey is terrific as Kenny Wells the head of a mining company and loosely based on
the life of David Walsh a Canadian businessman in the oil and gas and mining industries
Director Stephen Gaghan and writers Patrick Massett and John Zinman have put together a film thats a little Goodfellas and The Usual Suspects
Édgar Ramírez as Michael Acosta a geologist that teams up with Wells is also quite good.He has a poker face, and plays it so well i didnt know if his character was pissed off or elated, and this works well with how the film slickly plays out.
I was along with the highs and lows of the characters as they maneuver to hold on to their gold find and bypass greedy investors.
I definitely wanted to see more of Bryce Dallas Howard as Kay,Wells’ longtime girlfriend. She showed so much strength in her scenes it's a shame she doesnt have more to do in the film.
Towards the end the film starts to run out of steam, but it's surprising, never boring and fun.
In fact by the end i wanted to watch it again to see how much fool's gold i had invested in throughout the film

La La Land

I cant recall the last time i went to a broadway musical. Sure i've seen some good ones on film and stage but
they're just not at the top of my entertainment list.
But i was definitely charmed by La La Land.Ryan Gosling as Sebastian Wilder and Emma Stone as Mia Dolan
are great in the film, and have terrific chemistry and display their multi talents to a T.
John Legend is also great and gives the film a couple of rousing musical numbers. The choreography, visuals, lighting and music are all equally great
Director Damien Chazelle deserves praise for keeping it all together and letting the film flow easily.
Some scenes felt a bit forced as it mimics some moves and quirks of 50's musicals, and maybe as of late ive been buying into the hype of certain movies that have been ultra acclaimed, because i leave the theatre saying well that was very good but i wasnt completely bowled over by the experience.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

I will say this i admire Milla Jovovich's dedication to portraying Alice in the RE series of films,
but this is mainly a repetitive mess !!
Shaky camera work and scenes shot in the dark make some of the action sequences laughable and hard to see.
I did like some of the action sequences but i was mainly bored.Plus this film cant even keep the promise it makes in it's title
This is nothing but a good time killer when you're waiting for an interview or in a doctor's waiting room

SILENCE

If you believe in God your faith in him will always be tested.
Such is the story of 2 17th century Portuguese Jesuit priests, who travel to Japan to make
known Christianity and locate their missing mentor.

It was very moving ,how some of the people of Japan hungered for spiritual food, enlightenment and guidance. Those that opposed Chrisitianity had a strong hunger to break the faith of the priests and rid their country of any seeds of Chrisitianity.Which they viewed as just a gateway to colonization.
Scenes of such cleansing of their country were very harrowing.
There are great performances from:Andrew Garfield as Sebastião Rodrigues
Adam Driver as Francisco Garupe,Liam Neeson as Father Cristóvão Ferreira,Tadanobu Asano as The Interpreter,Ciarán Hinds as Father Alessandro Valignano,Issey Ogata as Inoue,Masashige
and Shinya Tsukamoto as Mokichi

Some moments are predictable and at times the pacing tried my patience but Director Martin Scorsese has put together and entrancing display of both the dark side of human nature and the light.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US

This story of a young man who was born on Mars and journeys to Earth to BANG....i mean meet the young woman he's been face timing with and to find his father starts well and is involving but loses it's way somewhere in the middle
Asa Butterfield as Gardner Elliot does ok but for some reason starts to channel Wes Bentley 's Ricky Fitts character from American Beauty
Gary Oldman gives his all but the film doesnt deserve him
There are some nice romantic moments between Buterfield and Britt Robertson and some of the drama works but the screenplay cant bypass it's huge plot holes and beyond stiff dialogue
Predictable turns also sink the movie
Wait for cable
