Official STAR WARS:THE FORCE AWAKENS discussion thread

I think Rey has had some youngling Jedi training, she's forgotten due to someone or some force technique. When she closes her eyes information comes back to her in pieces

Episode 8 will reveal some major history

This. That flashback she had showed her being dropped off on that planet as a kid. She probably received training as a child.

Finn is prob gonna be a beast in the next episodes,,,a good mix of Jedi Knight and elite ARC trooper / Mandalorian warrior (if given the right gear: light saber, armor, jet pack, blasters, etc)

A tougher version of Pre Vizla

I saw it for the second time. My rankings. ESB, TFA, ANH and ROTJ. I enjoyed this film the second time around more than the first time. The writing is better. The dialogue is better. It is a basic retelling of ANH, but it is a better version. The characters have more depth than the original trilogy.

I think Finn is going to get Jedi training.

I like the depiction of Kylo Ren. He is conflicted.

Damn good movie. I had to go in it with an open mind the second time around. The first time I was tense. I don't want to relive my youth. As I look back on the original triolgy as an adult, I see things entirely different. I am not as impressed with ANH and ROTJ as I was as an child. The main reason I give ANH over ROTJ is because it was the start, but it doesn't flow well.

Hats off to JJ> I can't wait to see what Rian Johnson does with the next installment.

Man stop. It was a bad movie.
Force genius? Give me a break.

he was emotionally shaken from killing his dad, he took a laser cross bow blast to the side and was bleeding profusely, he just fought Finn and got stabbed by him, THEN got into a fight with a force genius.

im starting to think folks arent comprehending what they're watching.

I still think Snoke is Plaegeuis the "WISE" as Palpatine calls him in Episode 3. The Sith greatest ally is deception...Plageuis was already credited with being able to create life and prevent death.

A few hints in The Force Awakens leads me to Plageuis though
  • Supreme leader Snokes elongated head is similar to descriptions of Plageuis
  • When Han Solo says to Ben "Snoke is using you..." Ben replies "Supreme leader Snoke is WISE"
  • The theme music for Snoke scenes and Palpatine and Anakin at opera when discussing Plageuis are identical

I read those same explanations (1 & 3) on Reddit a week ago. I thought it was shit then and I still think it's shit now. Plageuis is dead. End of story.

Now that I had time to think about it, I know where they got Kylo Ren's name from. Somebody was a fan of Star Wars: Droids.

Lupita's name in the movie was Maz Katana.
The short, yellow female alien with the BIG GOGGLES who ran that 'intergalactic lounge'... and gave Skywalker's lightsaber to Finn.

She did an OUTSTANDING job with her 'voice-over 'work, imo.
She sounded so much different from her character in '12 Years a Slave'.... that she was unrecognizable in Star Wars. :dunno:

2ykb37m.jpg

now im wondering if she'll be back for either the next movie or Episode 9..i mean we never saw her get killed as far i can tell :dunno:

I just have a few questions. It took Luke Skywalker years of practice and study before he was able to control the force, and that was under the teaching of Obi Won and Yoda. How did that girl become a Jedi master in a few hours?

And how was Fin who never touched a light saber in his life, able to fight Han Solos son?

And how were two teenagers, a senior citizen and a rookie able to waltz into the heart of the new and improved death star and blow it up, without a single sensor picking up on them?

I tried to like this movie. But at some point the plot just got silly. Whoever wrote this really did Star Wars a disservice

Good question, but they could come up with all sorts of answers, such as she is much closer on the spectrum of light and dark to the light side. Luke was way more conflicted, and has more pain. I notice it takes longer for people closer to the center to master the craft.

And how was Fin who never touched a light saber in his life, able to fight Han Solos son? Some say it's because he's force sensitive, others would say that arrow to the body was way more damaging to him to use his force. Why engage in a saber fight? He should have just used the force to push him back. I think it was just a plot hole.

And how were two teenagers, a senior citizen and a rookie able to waltz into the heart of the new and improved death star and blow it up, without a single sensor picking up on them? They went undetected because Finn knew the Death Star weak points. This one I have to say can easily make sense. The Death Star is HUGE. No way there is enough personnel to cover the entire place.

I tried to like this movie. But at some point the plot just got silly. Whoever wrote this really did Star Wars a disservice. The writer is Kasdan, and he wrote ROTJ and Empire Strikes Back so I think he has a grasp on the material.

Ok I saw the movie last night and I'm taking my son today at 2 pm. Here's my thoughts:

  • Kylo Ren was a terrible bad guy. He didn't come across as menacing at all. He started off strong by stopping the blaster bolt in mid air and then just kinda regressed to a petulant spoiled child. Vader was a bad guy. Half the dudes in the First Order would of been dead if Vader was there and there would of been no more fuck ups
bell_ringer_medium.gif

Yeah was really disappointed in him after that blaster bolt thing it was all down hill.

when he had the temper tantrum with the lightsaber instead of force choking a mutha fucka I knew it was :itsawrap: than when he took the helmet off :cmonson:

The good - most of the movie & plot. The bad - Harrison Ford actually has wigs worse than Donald Trump. I didn't think that was possible. The ugly - the horrid, unbelievable acting of General Hux. And the repetitive - yet ANOTHER Death Star. No spoilers.

Let's start with the ugly. If you are six foot, 160 pounds soaking wet then you've got to be convincing as a tough guy - he was not. Its not that he is a horrible actor, he just wasn't convincing in the role he played. He reminded me of a sniveling coward who most of us have seen as a boss or supervisor in our day jobs and they should not be. Between him and Kylo Ren (mask off) I'd say they tried to Jar-Jar Binks the movie. Luckily, they weren't in the movie for an extended period to ruin it as Jar-Jar did Episode 1.

Kylo Ren with mask - good, and believable, however, I thought he inspired pity more than fear from his tantrums, but at least he different from Darth Vader in that fashion, well I thought he surpassed Darth Vader's power. He was childish and petulant, yet believable - but he ruined it with his face, I have to say. His face didn't fit the part. Without the mask, remember the show Friends ("So no one told you life was going to be this way..." No? "We were on a break!" No? Screw it. Hulu it. It's funny). Anyway, Kylo Ren looks like he could have been Ross Geller's (David Schwimmer's) son. With the mask he was tough with it - I SAID DON'T MOVE WOMAN! - yet without the mask he couldn't sell water to a thirsty man in the desert.

The repetitive. Okay...prepare yourself for...yet another...attempt at...A Death Star. The first was Mercury. The second was Earth. Now this one will be Jupiter, each complete with a secret exploitable point that everyone knows about. Lame and lazy writing. If they are going with the super duper planetbuster go full Unicron. Why not a huge floating ship like in The Avengers - no. They go with the seen it, done it, let's do it again...wait...we already did it again? Grab Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby, wait, not Cosby - The Staple Singers and Let's Do It Again.

The repetitive part deux: because I watched 4,5, & 6 between Thursday and Saturday, parts of the plot looked like I'd seen it before...Because I had. I feel that Hollywood dreads stepping out on something that has not been successful before so they rinse wash repeat movie plots. Supreme Leader Snoke doing the same puppeteer act with Kylo Ren that the Emperor did with Vader was Hollywood fear to step out on the new just a little bit. Give me a leader, not another spineless puppet - with this puppet having a little less spine. My story should not so closely mirror the life and times of my grandfather who lived 90 years before me, should it?

The repetitive part Tres: using the Droid as a genie in a bottle yet again. First, "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi..." Now this. Okay, there's more, but let me get to the good. I don't want to make you think I'm bashing the movie because I'm not. I liked it.

Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), and Oscar Isaac (Poe), were excellent in their roles and very believable in their acting. All looked very seasoned considering I have seen little of their work in the past. Oh how I feared another Hayden Christensen, for whom the Razzie should be permanently named, that I critique these three and found little flaw. So great casting. Their characters' aim and direction was evident and plausible. They wanted to get away, or get away and get back to (not gonna tell you), or just do what they do best.

The action, acting, fight scenes were visibly fantastic. The ambiguity of Rey's character bothered me a tiny bit because I thought that they were going to do what they did with Luke and Leia, so the fact that they went vague leaves hope that they didn't just rehash yet another storyline. Also, excellent use of The Force to hold people at bay. I liked that part. And using The Force to freeze the laser beam mid-air... Classic. And Maz, she was my favorite character in the entire movie say. Wonderfully played.

Last but not least, Han Solo's wig from the Trump Collection or at least Dolly Parton. Han Solo is still Han Solo with hair or not. We didn't need him with the same hairdo from Episode 4,5, & 6 only grayer. Even Leia changes her hair and we still recognized her. If Harrison Ford is bald, then he'd still be Han Solo.

Overall, I liked the movie, and believe even Star Wars heads will enjoy it. I tried not to predict the predictable parts, and one part definitely caught me off guard. I did not see that...at all. A little bit of bad is one character got very powerful very fast, which seemed a bit forced and not unlike Luke Skywalker in Episode 5, but at least he teained with Yoda for a while. By all means, go see it. It earned 8 of 10. I'll say it again next week to see if I missed anything but I think the 8 will hold. It was better than the prequels by far, but I rank it ahead of Return of the Jedi as the third best Star Wars movie

I saw it on Sat night in 3Dand i really like it......it reminds me of Episode 4...its was worth every penny!!....can't wait for the next one!!..:yes:

The writer is Kasdan, and he wrote ROTJ and Empire Strikes Back so I think he has a grasp on the material.

Not alone and it shows. Leigh Brackett was actually a noted fantasy/sci-fi author. Read her bio on IMDB. She mentored fucking Ray Bradbury. That Ray Bradbury!

Addendum: She actually wrote most of the script before dying from cancer. Didn't know that. Now I know why the writing was so vastly different between ESB and ROJ.

Why are people still complaining about the kid? The guy killed his father, more than his punk ass grandfather, and folks are still up in arms. Guess he has to kill his mommy and uncle next to get some respect.

Jedis are like camron and jimmy at the Rucker when troubles afoot.

Saw it last night and I have to say some of yall are reaching about finn being a "janitor"' and "coward". I could say it wouldn't even been no movie had he not saved the Po dude in the beginning. Kylo Ren obviously sensed something from him and it wasn't just him refusing to kill in the village. And all of a sudden he knows how to shoot the tie fighter and milliueun falcon's weapons with precision his first time around?,not to mention he was able to stand toe to toe with kylo ren and get licks in.He has the potential to be the new Han Solo but he will always be holding that lightsaber on the poster, they got plans for the brother and he even told those CACs to get used to it. Finn and Ray are both force sensitive and potential future Jedi. Overall I give it a 4/5. Solid first entry into the new trilogy

Fin's character pissed me off. He went from trying to get away from the First Order to focusing on doing nothing but saving the white girl. By the middle of the movies all this Black man cared about was saving the white girl

He is gonna be trying to "save" her next go round....so it is all good.

I think he will be her love interest and that could be the reason white people were up in arms about his role.
Yeah he does. Without him they would not have been able to stop the bad guys. Hell without him Rey would not have won against Solo's son.
She's not white, she's Guatemalan, that's another reason people were up in arms.

What does canon mean?
can·on1
ˈkanən/
noun
  1. a general law, rule, principle, or criterion by which something is judged.
"the appointment violated the canons of fair play and equal opportunity"
    synonyms: principle, rule, law, tenet, precept;
  2. a collection or list of sacred books accepted as genuine. "the formation of the biblical canon"
IMO only the OT should be canon for the saga films not the expanded universe in the books and comics and such

Luke started his training later whereas the vision showed that Rey started training as a toddler so what she learned was dormant until the need arose. Rey is NOT a Jedi Master (yet). She is padawan level. Padawans are capable of using the force in battle but not as skilled as a Jedi Master. Ren is nowhere near Sith Lord level in skill. He's a new apprentice. Ren did good in battle considering he was injured and took on two fellow padawan level combatants.

Fin is force sensitive and had extensive combat training as a storm trooper (he was part of a small elite squad under Captain Phasma so not merely a foot soldier) so him being proficient against a rookie sith padawan while wielding a light saber made sense. Also him working in the sanitation systems (not a damn "janitor" lol) made him already familiar with which pump area to enter undetected. That was crucial.

This nigga Finn was ready to be these unknown niggas slave for a ride

He was helping load boxes n shit

Then he fumbling Han Solo bombs

He was well trained.

And Rey is obvious lando daughter(you knw lando loved them mixed cac bitches in the empire strikes back)and she was with a group of children luke was training. Finn was the handy man, and kunta kinta of the movie. They named home like they did Toby.

Movie was fire tho, I got a lil choked up when I saw Vader mask

And Kylo Ren was fire from start to finish.

Nigga was like 16 holding his own and stopping lasers like it was nothing.

Imagine when he becomes Vaders age and have to breathe with the mask and shit.

I still don't like his baby light sabers on the side tho.

B.B.A. Was the coolest droid ever.

Where the fuck was my nigga Yoda?

I used to think you were one of the more entertaining trolls. Shit ain't even funny try harder.

The movie was a DISAPPOINTMENT. The art of story telling is dead. JJ Abrams is the last person who should direct any movie franchises.

I just saw it pretty dope flick I'm sure the next installments will cover more ground and plots. What I got from Kylo Ren was much like a young naive Anakin skywalker who is being brainwashed by a sith Lord and has not fully ready yet in his training he shows signs of weakness especially when he takes his mask off. You can see the force is very strong with Rey when the lightsaber once weilded by her ancestors calls to her instead of a weaker kylo Ren. Han solo character was pretty much the same Han always joking sarcastic only he's much older like almost 35 years much older did everyone forget the 1st movie was in 1977. Luke looked like he traveled the Galaxy drinking at every bar or pub he could find lol. Finn gonna be a aight maybe he might get that Rey ass who knows she's got mad love for the brother
