Episode 8 had better fuckin bring it thats all I'm going to say...
Cuz the more I think about it the more disapponted I am with this one..It was DEFINITELY BETTER than the prequals but the basic remake of a ANH makes me feel
I get the feeling TFA was made for people who didn't see the OT and a new generation but for those who saw and grew up on the OT there were few immersive moments. We just see the cycle of a new generation doing the same old things
Rey=Luke
Finn=Han
Poe=Wedge (kind of)
BB-8 = R2D2
Ren=Vader
Schnook=Emperor (I know his name is Snoke but Schnook is what Mad Magazine will call him when they do the parody
)
Hux=Grand Moff Tarkin
Luke = Yoda
And if the pattern holds up then Ep 8 will end on a downer as it should but I hope its not a damn near shot for shot remake of Empire Strikes Back.
People say the acting was better but the chemistry of the scenes wasn't..what I mean is things happened as they were needed as opposed to making some kind of organic sense.
Examples:
I got the feeling I was supposed to think Poe was important to this story but I didn't FEEL it. He got the map to lukes location from some dude...he gave it to his droid then got captured and tortured, escaped and disappeared/died...then shows up again later in the film during the big battle scene. I got the feeling we were supposed to be happy like when Han choose to leave and not participate on the battle of yavin in ANH only to show up at the last second to help luke destroy the death star and everyone in the theater literally cheered at his return...there was no moment like that altho I THINK there was supposed to be.
Rey had no real reason to protect BB8. She was a scavenger living hand to mouth and when offered 60 portions of freeze dried food there was no obvious reason for her to turn that down for a functioning droid she should be selling to the highest bidder. Her keeping the droid or helping it only put her in danger more than anything with no obvious upside. Luke on the other hand didn't give a shit about R2 or C3PO, he was a moisture farmer who longed for adventure and more out of life than trying to get water out a desert we see that when he looks longingly at the horizon dreaming about whats out there...
And when he sees the message and leia for the first time he finds her attractive and is intrigued...
But the ONLY REASON he left tatootoine is because his guardians were killed.
thats IT..uncle owen and his wife are dead and there is NOTHING left for luke there nor anything holding him back from accompanying Ben Kenobi on his rescue mission (which luke was reluctant to do at first). Rey has no real conflict like that..she just does it because she had nothing else better to do. Luke was initially trying to rescue a princess to get with her...whats Rey trying to do?
The opening crawl gave waay to much importance on Luke in a galactic way. His mere presence will bring peace to the galaxy (altho it hadn't thus far)
Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS
Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.
With the support of the REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE. She is desperate to find her brother Luke and gain his help in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy.
Leia has sent her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where an old ally has discovered a clue to Luke’s whereabouts….
There really isn't much clear about whats going on galactically in the crawl...Is the Republic ruling the galaxy or the First Order? If the First Order is the supreme power, how can the Republic have a known capital without the First Order simply invading and taking the complete leadership for enhanced interrogation? If the Republic is in power, why is there something called the resistance?
By contrast A New Hope's crawl spells things out pretty clear:
"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy...."
The first few minutes of Episode 4 tells you all you need to know. When you see the words EMPIRE and REBELLION then see a little ship chased by a ginormous ship its pretty clear what's going on galactically.
the big difference between the OT and the PT and this film is that the OT didn't mention any "Balance to the Force" and how that effects the civil war. The Empire and rebellion fighting was separate from Lukes personal development and involvement with Vader. They were two separate issues in the OT..we saw the war played out as Luke was having his adventure. Sure he used the force to target the ventilation shaft but Han (not a force sensitive) made that opportunity happen. In ROTJ Lukes issues had really nothing to do with destroying the Death Star. And Leia didn't use any latent force powers to make that happen either.
What was happening between the Jedi and the Sith was between THEM and had no real consequence for the larger republic...thats why we kept running into people who didn't believe in the force or scoffed at those who did. Han does it as well at the officer who got smart with Vader then force choked. Hell even in TFA rey and finn thought it was a legend or myth which means none of that means SHIT to people in their real lives in the galaxy.
Lucas fucked up by placing that balance bullshit in the PT. And it seems like Abrams is going with that which is why there is so much strong focus on finding Luke because the galaxy depends on it rather than Leia trying to find her brother for personal reasons and rey and finn are drawn to her because thats how the force is working BETWEEN THEM. But that shouldn't be pertinent to and should run parallel with the galactic issues between the republic and first order. Much like how the OT played out.
The prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the force was eyerolling bullshit when we first heard it in Phantom Menace and its bullshit now...
Those are a few examples of things that were off to me but didn't really sink in until after I saw it and thought about it. Like I said Episode 8 has the Empire position so they better bring something better than a replay of that film...
