Xbox One Console Reviews

Damn COD's multiplayer is good too. Not as smooth as Titanfall though. But Wayyy better then Ghost.

Later this month marks the one year anniversary of Xbox One. As we look back on the year, one of the best marks of progress for Xbox One has been our commitment to delivering continuous innovation. When Xbox One launched, we said we were deeply committed to our fans and our ongoing service updates have delivered hundreds of new features throughout the year. In fact, we launched a new website, Xbox Feedback, to enable us to hear from you directly and let you vote for your favorite ideas. We received thousands of new feature recommendations and more than three quarters of a million votes this past year, and your feedback played a huge role in shaping new experiences on Xbox One. Keep them coming!

Here are some of the most popular new features added this past year, but also check out a recap of the full list of previously announced new features below. You may find a few surprises to help you make the most of your Xbox One. And rest assured, our commitment to continuous innovation remains strong.
Customization

  • Custom backgrounds. The #1 fan-requested feature, each account on your Xbox One can have a customized background. You can choose a custom color or achievement art as your background on Xbox One, with more customization options coming down the road, like personalized images from the media browser app.
  • Take system updates when you want. Take system updates as soon as they’re available if you prefer. When the system update is made available, you’ll find the option under Settings, then select System update.
New Friends, Activities and Achievements

  • New Friends section. See at a glance what’s going on with your friends. You can stay up-to-date with your current activities, the most popular games your friends are playing, and a Gamerscore leaderboard to see who has improved their Gamerscore over the last 30 days.
  • Activity feed updates. We added new ways for you to interact with friends in the activity feed. The interface changed to a single column scrolling list that is longer and includes more content. We added the ability to post text to your feed, and to “like” and comment on feed items. You can share game clips and anything else in the feed with friends either publically (to your activity feed) or privately (as an attachment to a message). You are also notified when anyone likes, comments on or shares your items. Each person gets a personal feed on their profile, so you can see what specific friends have been up to. And, with SmartGlass, you can see what your friends have shared to their activity feed and “like” specific posts.
  • A New Achievements App. Updated to enable sharing of achievements you’ve unlocked with captions, see a list of friends who have unlocked specific achievements, and an updated achievements Snap landing page that shows Achievements on recently played games, when a gamer is not actively playing a game.
  • Snap updates. We updated the Snap Center to include quick access to many of the things you wanted faster access to when playing a game – Friends, Messages, Achievements, Game DVR, clock, and battery indicator – as well as making it easier to close and open new snap apps when playing a game. A double tap of the Xbox button on your controller brings up a menu that allows you to open a new app in snap mode, close the current snapped app, or switch focus between your game and your running snapped app.
Second Screen and Accessories

  • Mobile purchase. Using Xbox SmartGlass or on Xbox.com, you can remotely purchase games and Add-on content. No more waiting to begin downloading when you get home – if your console is set to automatically take updates, your console will begin downloading your purchase. And, you can also get Games with Gold and Deals with Gold on SmartGlass, so you can download free games wherever you are to your console.
  • Battery power indicator. We brought back the battery power indicator so that you can see right on the home screen how much juice is left in your controller’s battery. You will also get an on-screen notification when your controller battery is getting low.
System and Game Updates

  • Silent reboot after system updates and system update on demand. If your console is in Instant On mode, the update will happen automatically and return to standby upon completion. This means you won’t need to power on your console after an update moving forward. If you want to take future updates when available without waiting for your console to do it on its own, this option is under system settings. It will only show as available when there is an update to take.
  • Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You can easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently.
More Ways to Experience Entertainment

  • Boot to TV. You can set your console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.
  • Media Player, DLNA, and MKV support (and more!). A newly added Media Player app supports DLNA streaming so you can easily access and play music, watch photo slideshows or movies stored on home media servers and devices that support the DLNA server protocols. Additionally, you can playback tons of files – including MKV – stored on a USB device or a device on your home network that supports DLNA streaming.
  • Xbox One Digital TV Tuner and Steam TV to SmartGlass. This USB-attached TV Tuner, available in UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, enables you to watch TV on Xbox One, and pause Live TV for up to 30 minutes. If you have an Xbox One Digital TV Tuner, you can stream TV across your home network to your smartphone or tablet using the Xbox SmartGlass app. You can also pause, play, rewind and change channels, without interrupting gameplay.
  • TV Discovery Made More Social. New features were introduced for social discovery on TV, including Live TV Trending, Twitter TV Trending, Xbox TV Trending, and Tweets in MiniGuide.
Audio

  • Sound mixer for apps with Snap and volume controls when using Kinect with chat. With the Sound mixer, you can control the volume levels of two apps when you’re using Snap letting you decide which app is louder. In this same section, you can control the volume levels when you’re using Kinect for chat.

Well that's good to know, I have not gotten to the multi-player yet because I'm still playing the campaign mode. Campaign mode is sic!:yes:

he head of CD Projekt Red today is taking a public stance against what he believes is an abusive use of paid downloadable content, and he's putting The Witcher 3's DLC where his mouth is. Anyone who buys The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on any platform will also receive 16 free bits of downloadable content after the game is out, developer CD Projekt Red announced today.

Marcin Iwinski, co-founder and joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, told Polygon that the company is made up of gamers and they try to make games that treat other gamers how they would like to be treated.

"We always thought it's best to follow what you believe in, so here we are," he said. "Others may or may not do the same, but this is who we are and what we think gamers deserve."

Iwinski discussed what he views as a bad trend in the gaming industry in an open letter on the game's official site.

"Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of," he wrote. "We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn't have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character, or an extra sword, or armor.

"Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached. Haven't we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?"

The free DLC program for the game, which is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Feb. 24, will start arriving the day after the game launches. The first bundle of DLC will be a Temerian Armor set (horse armor included) and a beard and hairstyle set for protagonist Geralt. The second set will include an additional quest and an alternative look for one of the game's other main characters, either Yennefer or Vengerberg.

The rest of the free DLC will arrive in bundles of two, every week, starting March 4, for the next seven weeks. The DLC is available to everyone for free whether they purchased a Collector's edition, bought a physical or digital copy, or pre-ordered the game.

When asked why the content is being rolled out over weeks as DLC, instead of being included on the disc, Iwinski said that the content isn't finished yet.

FullHD-EN_001.0.png

"The fact that we are announcing the DLC before launch does not mean it is ready at this moment in time," he told Polygon. "As you probably know, we are currently focused on polishing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This means that most of the teams are involved in finalizing development and optimizing the game. However, some of the teams are free to start working on additional content that can be released after we launch the game. This is the case here. DLC will not be present on disc."
The rise of paid DLC in the face of a mostly negative response from gamers is driven by pure psychology, Iwinksi said.

"When you get invested and emotionally attached to a game — and as we all know that's what gaming is about — you want to have the full game and have access to all the options," he said. "Why not have a bit better sword, armor or, yes, horse armor — if it's possible to. You might use it, you might not, but you want to have it. It's pure psychology and, from the 'here and now' business perspective, it's an opportunity to get more money out of each copy. I am not saying all DLCs are not worth the price, but I think this business model is definitely abused to say the least. We think things shouldn't look like this, and that's why we do it differently. We give this stuff for free."

Iwinski said he hopes their stand against releasing downloadable content for sale soon after a game's release will lead to some industry introspection and maybe changes.

"We really hope this will initiate a change in the industry, even if it's a small one at first," he said. "This, and we also hope to make someone's day better."

While Iwinski and CD Projekt Red seem against the notion of paid downloadable content for games, that doesn't mean they've entirely ruled it out for The Witcher 3 and future games from the company.

"If we ever decide to release paid content for Wild Hunt, I promise you, gamers will see why we decided to charge for it," he said. "We'll ask ourselves a simple question: Could anyone feel ripped off when they buy it? If there's even a slightest possibility they will, we won't do it."

There's good news on Halo: The Master Chief Collection's gargantuan day one download.

First off, it's smaller than expected. Developer 343 had said it would be 20GB, but it's now 15GB, we've verified. Still huge, mind, but a little less huge.

And it's available to download now, if you've pre-ordered the game digitally. So if you've enabled auto-download you can get the update going ahead of the Xbox One's release on 11th November.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection's day one download adds the multiplayer portion of the game.

"From the start, our philosophy has been to give Halo fans the best possible experience and not compromise the quality or features of the collection," executive producer Dan Ayoub said last month.

"The result is that Halo: The Master Chief Collection will take up almost all of the usable space of a single Blu-ray (45GB), and we will also issue a content update at launch that is estimated to be 20GB."

Each of the campaigns will be playable while you're downloading the day one patch, 343 has said.

"You'll be able to start playing Campaign and more as the content is installing, with some features and multiplayer content being added via the update. Yes, the update is large, but we weren't about to cut corners to save disc space," said Ayoub.

"This ensures that you are getting every bit of Halo goodness we can fit in. Our work is not done, however, as we continue to tune, tweak and optimise the online experience to ensure a smooth multiplayer launch. This will continue right up until launch day."

Fuck! I traded GTA last month.

I still want to trade in my 360, but I'm hesitant to do anything else because it seems like the deals keep getting better and better.

Mass-Effect-2-670x376.jpg

During the N7 livestream, Bioware just showcased a new piece of concept art of the next Mass Effect, that still doesn’t have a final name.

It was also mentioned that several developers from Dragon Age: Inquisition are
joining the next Mass Effect team to help “bring the game to the next level.”

According to the developers, the goal is not to simply make “Mass Effect 4,” but to really bring the franchise forward by introducing a lot of new concepts, and that it will be the “biggest Mass Effect yet.”

The first two pieces of concept art show the Mako, and the devs mentioned that the new experience with it is completely different from the past and a lot of fun, with many at the studio that spend a lot of time just driving around.

Interestingly, the fourth and fifth concepts below were mentioned to be about the architecture for new alien species created for the new game, presumably for a peaceful and a hostile species respectively.

The sixth concept shows an environmental scan skill or tech which will fit the theme of exploration that permeates almost every aspect of the game.

Of course all the concepts look absolutely lovely. This game seriously can’t come early enough.

mass-effect-cover.jpg

During the N7 Day developer roundtable livestream BioWare gave a bird-eye view on the upcoming Mass Effect game, not only showing some amazing pieces of concept art, but also explaining the concepts behind the game and giving many pieces of information about the philosophy driving development and the focus on the new generation of platforms.
Here’s a recap of what was said:

  • Several of developers from Dragon Age are transferring to the Mass Effect team to “bring the game to the next level.”
  • The developer is holding on to the mass effect legacy, but is also using it to “leap forward,” and adding a lot of new concepts.
  • The game is as its core a Mass Effect game.
  • The goal is to build the biggest Mass Effect game yet.
  • There will be alien planets and more terrestrial looking planets to explore.
  • The uses of the Frostrbite engine and the focus on current gen platforms (PS4 and Xbox One) and PC Bioware can take things to a different level and create an experience “even truer to the initial vision,” because many of the limitations created by older platforms are now removed.
  • The theme of the contrast between organics and synthetics will return.
  • Some of the early work going on on the engine engine is just beautiful
  • The beautiful new areas of the game aren’t just places you can walk around in, but they’re tied to something larger.
  • When the developers talk about exploration, they’re not talking just about discovering new places, but also cultural exploration, discovering new races and new things about known races.
  • Exploration is not forced on players. It’s all about freedom and you get to decide what you want to do. You can either put exploration aside or lose yourself in it for hours and hours on end.
  • There are amazing “vaults and tombs” in the game, and there’s a mystery behind them, and that’s also part of the exploration component of the game.
  • The depth of the exploration experience is “super important,” so the players will have many tools at their disposal to that end.
  • The protagonist of the game is someone who is “becoming an hero.” He’s skilled and capable but hasn’t reached the legendary status Shepard has even at the beginning of the Mass Effect trilogy.
  • BioWare wants to keep the player immersed in the world as much as possible, so there won’t be too many cutscenes and the like.
  • Frostbite and focusing on new generation platforms will allow to build a more immersive experience.
  • Despite the exploration theme there will still be plenty shooting and fighting like in the previous Mass Effect games, with the same quality of tools which you had before.
  • Exploration is all about fun, and having unique moments outside of the classic combat-related gameplay.
  • There’s still a lot of conflict in the game, there’s a lot for the hero to solve and figure out, a lot of opportunities to shoot people in the face, but BioWare wants to marry the concept with exploration properly so the experience is really well rounded.
  • You’re not alone in the world exploring, so creating relationships with other characters is still an “absolute central piece” of the game.
  • Given that the context of the game is changing, the dynamics between the hero and the other characters have also evolved from the previous games.
  • BioWare wanted to make space exploration as important to the game as the rest of the game.
I don’t know about you, but this all feels extremely promising. Call me crazy, but I can’t wait to cruise around on the surface of unexplored planets with my Mako.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s first official Double XP Weekend is now underway, according to an announcement from Sledgehammer games on Twitter and Facebook.
The event is live across all platforms for the duration of the weekend in celebration of Advanced Warfare’s ‘Day Zero’ launch last Monday, November 3.

In related news, Sledgehammer Games Co-Founder Glen Schofield has addressed a number of complaints from the Call of Duty community that their Advanced Warfare experience has, so far, been full of “laggy” games and connection issues.

According to Schofield, “The full weight of Activision is on the issues.”
“We hear you loud and clear and we want everybody to know we are on top of it,” he added.

For now, the studio has outlined a number of improvements developers have planned for an incoming update, but the list is mostly compiled of polish items. If there are any further announcements on server updates, you’ll be sure to hear it right away on MP1st.
Update

Studio head Michael Condrey issued a similar but more lengthy statement on Advanced Warfare’s connection services in a recent developer blog. Here’s what he said:

Advanced Warfare employs game servers hosted at data centers globally on all platforms and listen servers as part of our proprietary matchmaking system. Our goal is to ensure the best possible connection and greatest gameplay experience regardless of location and time of day.

We hope you have a great Advanced Warfare launch weekend! We’ve activated DoubleXP as a thank you for the continued support from fans across the globe.
More news to come over the days, weeks and months ahead. Until then, know that we are listening, excited, and happy to be part of this with you.

overwatch-winston-screenshot-007_2068.0.0_cinema_960.0.jpg

Blizzard Entertainment announced a new title at BlizzCon today, Overwatch, a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter and the developer's first new property in years, that focuses on an international team of soldiers — humans, humanoids and what appear to be mechs. And cyber-gorillas.

In a pre-rendered video, Blizzard showed Overwatch's characters and action, including stealth snipers, gorillas wearing armor and masked mercenaries engaging in firefights. Overwatch appears to be heavily focused on action and gunplay, with characters teleporting mid-gunfight and others using grappling guns to move quickly through a clean futuristic environment.

Blizzard's Chris Metzen says Overwatch — which is a game, he confirmed — is coming "sooner than you think."

"Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that's more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, in a prepared statement. According to a press release from Blizzard, Overwatch takes place in a future where an "international task force" known as Overwatch had brought peace to a world in conflict, but had since broken apart; now, new heroes must arise.

Game director Jeff Kaplan said at BlizzCon that Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer shooter, "a game and genre" that Blizzard has been interested in exploring for a while. In Overwatch, which appears to feature Blizzard's signature chunky, slightly cartoonish style, players will have access to a variety of classes and characters. Some characters wear missile-firing mech suits, while others wield a bow and arrow, dual pistols, sniper rifles, hammers, or staffs.

Characters shown in a gameplay video of Overwatch include Hanzo, a bow-wielding ranger; Winston, the gorilla; Torbjorn, a dwarf engineer; Widowmaker, the sniper; and Bastion, the robot/turret.

Movement in Overwatch looks fast, with quick grappling mechanics, teleporting and flying, as well as ground traversal. The game appears to use a blend of magic and technology, with robots that transform into turrets fighting alongside spell-casting supporting heroes. Overwatch offers six-on-six play on maps inspired by real-world locales such as London and Egypt.

A beta for the game is coming in 2015, and Overwatch is available to play at BlizzCon this weekend. You can check out 38 screenshots above, then watch the cinematic trailer below and the gameplay video below that.

Overwatch includes pieces of Blizzard's canceled MMO Titan

overwatch-reaper-screenshot-002_1920.0.0_cinema_960.0.jpg

Elements of Blizzard Entertainment's just-announced shooter, Overwatch, were once part of the canceled massively multiplayer online game Titan, Senior Vice President of story and franchise development Chris Metzen revealed today during a BlizzCon panel.

In response to a question about any similarities between the two games, Metzen said that "there are elements to Overwatch" that have "continuity" with Titan, including some maps. Even though some of Overwatch may have originated in Titan, he stressed that the games aren't the same.

"I would say they're pretty different, but there are some components," Metzen said.
Blizzard revealed to Polygon in September that it had canceled Titanafter at least seven years of development on thenext-gen MMO — a game that it never officially announced.

"We didn't find the fun," Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime told Polygon. "We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no."

Titan's demise was the latest for a company with a history of canceling games it deemed unworthy.

Check out our coverage of Overwatchto learn more about the team-based shooter, including a cinematic trailer that calls to mind a Pixar short. For more on what the developer announced at BLizzCon 2014, check out Polygon's StoryStream.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection Reviews

The Master Chief Collection is an impressive history lesson on the evolution of Halo

Ultimately, these issues are small nicks in an otherwise intimidating facade. Halo: The Master Chief Collection sets a bar that other remasters and collections will have difficulty reaching, much less topping. For players new to Halo, who have missed any of the included games, it is a stunning introduction to one of the most beloved series in video games. For Halo fans, it's a package that shows almost as much respect and affection for the Master Chief as they do.

Superb value for money and the best excuse to buy an Xbox One yet.

  • Halo 2's multiplayer maps are some of the series' best.
  • Four games in one? The value for money here is ridiculous.

  • Visual upgrades can only paper over archaic design so much.
  • Switching between the different MP game engines can be jarring.

Superb: A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage to what is a supreme title.

At $60, The Master Chief Collection is an easy sell for Xbox One owners. Halo fans will want to pick it up because these are the best versions of all four games to date, with the neat bonus of access to the Halo 5 beta next month. Series newcomers will find this collection the perfect entry point, too, with a ton of content to play on a console that — like the PlayStation 4 — still doesn't have a ton.

"Experience the legend of the Master Chief," reads the title screen. That doesn’t quite ring true to me. Instead, I’d recommend you experience the legend of Halo: how Bungie struck gold with a near-flawless formula in 2001, how that formula led to one of the biggest names in gaming, and how it remains untouchable well over a decade on.

Conclusion

Judging Halo: The Master Chief Collection by its value proposition alone would be a disservice to its quality but, admittedly, speaks volumes about what you can expect. A wealth of content, detail and care went into this package. It doubles as both a nostalgia-soaked box of memories and a centralized home for newcomers to dig into the vast story of Halo. Despite some technical issues that haunt the overall experience, they’re small footnotes, quickly forgotten as the next dramatic bump in the Master Chief’s journey demands your attention. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is, at least for the time being, the definitive Halo experience and well worth that attention.

While we’re not able to provide our in-depth thoughts on the dense multiplayer suite and server-based bonus content included with Halo: The Master Chief Collection just yet; we’ll be providing a comprehensive review once we’ve thoroughly experienced it in a real-world setting. However, if 343 Industries and Microsoft Studios have treated the multiplayer and cooperative component with the same attentive care, you’re very likely to be in great shape.

Having all four numbered Halos together in close proximity raises an interesting and unexpected conclusion. You see, whatever your perception of Halo, whatever instinctive thoughts and feelings make up the essence of the series for you, in truth it doesn’t exist in any single, concrete form. It’s the product of memory, nostalgia, and combined, long-term perceptions, a gestalt idea realised over the course of 13 years and multiple iterations. And that, ultimately, is where The Master Chief Collection shines.

Despite prioritising out-of-place technical revisions over the series’ chronological integrity - and thus throwing coherence out of whack with Halo 2’s presentation - the freeform, mix-and match approach taken to the collection’s structure is perhaps the closest we’ll ever get to a real-world realisation of the imagined Halo ideal. Able to finally play all of Halo, take it apart, rebuild it, and remix it to our own tastes, we can now play both Halo as it was made, and Halo as it exists in our minds. That’s a hell of a good thing. And whether you’re a series veteran or an interested new recruit, it’s something you should definitely consider exploring. In fact you should just do it. Right now.
