Xbox One Review in Progress

The Xbox One hardware review embargo has lifted, and you may be wondering: where is IGN’s review of the new system? As with the PlayStation 4, IGN does not want to prematurely review these next-generation systems without first experiencing them after their services fully launch. In the case of the Xbox One, that means we'll issue our full review sometime in the week following the launch this Friday. From hardware, to software, to server problems -- or even critical updates -- anything can happen. Based on our experience with Xbox One, we have no reason to expect any specific issues, but if major product launches have taught us anything, it’s that it's wise to reserve judgment until the facts are in.

Having said that, we’re sensitive to the fact that you may be considering investing hard-earned money in this new future. Or, like many, you may be waiting months or years before you head into the next-generation. Either way, it’s important to give you some insights as we head into launch weekend. And what better way to get insights than seeing it in action? In the next hour, we will have our uncut 20-minute demo of using Xbox One added here. In the meantime, we have plenty of other real demos from the platform you should check out below. So watch this space for further updates, and be sure to leave us questions and thoughts in the comments.

The Xbox One: The Kotaku Review

"The Xbox One is trying some very cool new things, and it's launching alongside some very fun games. But there are so many rough edges, and the software feels incomplete. Do you need to have an Xbox One?"

ku-xlarge.gif

(This review will be updated throughout the coming weeks to ensure we've covered all the basics and adequately tested all the currently incomplete features with a growing Xbox One userbase. All Kotaku reviews that carry a "Not Yet" are intended to eventually end up as a "No" or "Yes". For a console, that will happen if/when the system either proves hopeless or winds up having some must-play, must-own games.)

Review: Xbox One

Conclusion (In Progress)

"The success of the Xbox One is largely dependent on what you need for the living room, and whether you intend to use the system for multiple forms of media, with multiple people in mind. The user interface feels cluttered at times, and it has a definite learning curve, but it's also easy to carve out a quick and comfortable groove for yourself as you jump between a game and a few different applications. The Xbox One's app-driven interface is full of possibilities, living alongside quirks to be learned or updated in future.

It has unique, recommendable features: Kinect feels additive rather than obstructive, and its strong suit of software and games live alongside one another in a way they don't on other platforms. Online games are well implemented too, and if that's what you're here for the rest may seem less valuable – an important matter when the product costs $500. Five bucks more if you count a Galaxy Quest rental. "

Microsoft Xbox One review: a fast and powerful work in progress

xb1review_hedimg_630px_take2.jpg

Wrap-up

"The Xbox One may not be exactly what Microsoft thinks it is, but it's still a strong start for a powerful game console. Its sheer speed, versatility, horsepower and its ability to turn on and off with words make it a relatively seamless entry into our already crowded media center. What determines whether it stays there is the next 12 months: Exclusives like Titanfall and Quantum Break will help, as will gaining feature parity with the competition (we're looking at you, game broadcasting!). For broader success beyond just the early adopter's living room, the NFL crowd must buy in to Microsoft's $500 box. But will they? That remains to be seen. What's there so far is a very competent game box with an expensive camera and only a few exclusive games differentiating it from the competition"

Xbox One Review: Absolutely Amazing (When It Works)

ku-xlarge.jpg

Should You Buy It?

"Not yet. It's generally dumb to buy any new console right at launch. PS4's have been having issues with a "blue light of death," and for all we know the Xbox One could have its own issues as well; the sting of the red ring of death is still fresh in most memories. Besides, the launch line-up of games—while a little better than the PS4's—is a bit soft. The real gotta-play system-sellers like Watchdogs, Destiny, and Titanfall, are still a few months out. Halo 5 is a mere glint on the horizon.

The software is still in flux too. We experienced a little jank with a few apps. Twitch streaming isn't coming until sometime early 2014. HBO Go is "coming soon" but hasn't shown up yet. These consoles are coming in hot, so just chill. Theoretically all will get fixed with time; hopefully right around when a game you just have to have finally gets released.

For now, the Xbox One is one impressive living room box machine—and it more than justifies its $500 dollar price with the inclusion of at least $100-worth of set-top boxitude—but you're going to be better off waiting for a little while to see how things shake out.

But—and this is admittedly a sizable but—if the Xbox One can straighten the few little quirks it has with some software tweaks, this thing is going to be unstoppable in a way the PS4 could never touch. It's too versatile, too feature-ridden, too future. So wait, yes. But while you do, go ahead and start clearing out plenty of space underneath your television."

my first question does it play mp4? For some reason the Xbox 360 did not play mp4 and only avi.maybe it was trying to cut down on the bootleg thing like the ps3 and the Cinavia (you would play a movie get about a half hour into it and the sound will go out with a message that there is nothing wrong with your Playstation 3 you are trying to play a bootleg movie and we're not going to let you).this was important to me because I mainly use my playstation 3 for media player

I will get it when the xbox one slim comes out and they stop making games for the 360. This is probably the first generation of games that is not as exciting. I remember the jump from snes to n64 . I got used to playing mario world and the first time i saw mario i did not sleep for 3 days and had to be lifted outside my cousins house just to get me away.

Forza Motorsport 5 Video Reviews

IGN 8.8

Rev3Games 5/5

Gamespot 9.0

Joystiq 4/5

"Forza Motorsport 5 maintains the franchise's perfectly balanced personality, though this is largely thanks to the actual personalities of BBC's Top Gear. Once again, Jeremy Clarkson and co. narrate segments of the game, providing informative, entertaining and cheeky explanations of each racing league before you get started. These guys know how to make cars entertaining for all, and Forza should exhibit no shame in stealing everything it can from them. One of the best comedic diversions in Forza 5 is a trip through the Top Gear test track, this time set to a tongue-in-cheek London simulation mode. Some say the Stig is also represented somewhere in the game ... though it's probably too nice to be his Drivatar.

I do another run through the calming Bernese alps, this time in a pitch-black Nissan GT-R. I catch a glimpse of Xav's alter ego once more, gripping my controller tight in preparation for his all-metal attack. Or is it anticipation? I gently ease off the acceleration, wait, wait, wait and give him just a tap on the side, sending him into a barrier. Now I am one with my cloud people."

GTA 5 pre-orders at Microsoft Store get $20 XBL credit

xgta-52.jpg.pagespeed.ic.neeTpHCgiW.jpg

Pre-ordering Rockstar's latest sandbox crime game, Grand Theft Auto 5 ,on Xbox 360 through the Microsoft Store will nab you some Xbox Live Marketplace credit: 1,600 MS Points worth, or $20 in real-world money.

Microsoft issued an update converting MS Points to real currency on Xbox 360 yesterday. This coupon code, despite being in the old MS Points currency, is still valid after this update.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is set to launch on Xbox 360 and PS3 on September 17. Rockstar parent company Take-Two expects the game will generate $600 million in revenue – and maybe you'll spend that bonus $20 on the inevitable DLC.
