joystiq 4/5

Thief occasionally dabbles with collapsing pathways as well, with some missions triggering an escape sequence meant as spectacular climax to your concentrated sneaking. These all feel staged and out of place, though, and poorly aligned with the hushed tone of the game. This is the ugly side of Thief's modernization, welded to a less charismatic, bland Garrett and a story that opens with a botched robbery, adds a dash of amnesia and then fizzles out in a misjudged boss fight of sorts. Thief's trajectory should have taken Garrett to the untouchable item, the uncrackable safe, the perfect crime – to end up at anything resembling a boss fight feels like a jarring compromise, all for the sake of labeling this an "adventure."

Thief is best when it sticks to the involving, slow-paced stealth that made its ancestor such a tense affair. In its subtle moments, Eidos Montreal gives your creeping a sense of closeness and texture, in a game where you almost always have your nose pressed against things. Much like Garrett, Thief succeeds while quiet, fingers reaching out and almost – almost – touching an irresistible spread of glittering prizes.

Microsoft confirmed this morning that a Titanfall/Xbox One bundle will be offered. It arrives the day the game launches for that console and PC. It's $499 and will include a digital copy of the game and one month of Xbox Live Gold.

Realize this is not a Titanfall console—the Xbox One itself is the same as every other one being sold. And the copy of Titanfall is a code for a digital download. The Kinect sensor, wireless controller and chat headset standard with all current Xbox Ones also are included.

Rumors going back to the end of January suggested Titanfall would get a bundle but plans for a Titanfall-themed console were apparently scrapped.

For more coverage on the game, which just wrapped up its beta period on Xbox One and PC, see our impressions.

Next month, an update will bring the popular Twitch video game broadcasting service to the Xbox One in a way that home consoles have never seen before. It will launch on March 11, just in time for Titanfall.

According to AP, the update will allow Xbox One the ability to live stream games via Twitch as well as start live broadcasts through voice commands. What's more, the Xbox One app will feature Twitch's chat features and allow user to broadcast via Kinect.

UPDATE: More details from Microsoft:

  • To start streaming with Kinect, you'll say "Xbox, broadcast. (You can also use button commands). To stop streaming, you can say "Stop broadcast" or "Xbox, stop broadcast.
  • You can send ask to join a game that's being broadcast if it's coming from an Xbox One and you're on an Xbox One.
  • You can view streams from any system. In a press release this morning, Microsoft mentioned the following examples as options: "Titanfall (Xbox One), Minecraft (Xbox 360), Star Craft II (PC), Uncharted (PS4) — watch all the games you want to watch on Xbox One."
END UPDATE
"It's complete integration," Emmett Shear, co-founder and CEO of Twitch, is quoted as saying. "It's exciting because we've never had the ability to broadcast from a console like this with such a deep level of integration. The concept of being able to join a broadcasters' party is really cool, and it's another step in the direction of interacting more closely with broadcasters."

Unlike the PS4 Twitch app, which was put together by Sony, the Xbox One app was created by Twitch. Also, unlike the PS4 Twitch app, the Xbox One app will allow users to broadcast to and view from any device—including, the PS4.

"This will open up the social aspect of Xbox One in a new way," said Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi. "The community of Twitch is huge, and this allows us to type into that, and frankly do something that's never been done before on consoles. You'll be able to broadcast to any device and consume anyone's broadcast from any device. It's a console experience unique to the Xbox One."

The update will hit on March 11.

Folks were complaining about how much it was going to cost to play the first chunk of Snake's next adventure, which seems pretty short. Now it's going to be a bit cheaper, taking some of the cost off of the versions for the new, current-gen consoles. From the press release:

KONAMI has also announced that it will offer both physical and digital versions of METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, for an SRP of $29.99. Bringing pricing in-line with the "current generation" price, KONAMI aims to provide as many people as possible an opportunity to experience Kojima Productions' FOX Engine and the first installment in the two-part METAL GEAR SOLID V experience. METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft will remain at the SRP of $29.99 for retail and via download for SRP $19.99.
Previously, prices for the current-gen versions were $30 digital and $40 physical. The different-prices-for-different-platforms structure for Ground Zeroes has been a controversy ever since it was announced, with many decrying the playable prequel to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain as a demo that players would have to pay for. the varying costs became even more controversial when it became public that Ground Zeroes' playtime can be under two hours, depending on how you play.

Today's release also gave details about an iOS companion app and DLC for Ground Zeroes. The iDroid app will let players call up maps, call in air support or listen to recordings found around the base that Snake infiltrates. And here's how Konami describes the DLC connections that will link coming to Ground Zeroes to The Phantom Pain:

First, it was revealed that those who purchase METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES early on will receive exclusive DLC for use within THE PHANTOM PAIN. The DLC will only be available in the first batch of the retail version and for a limited period of time for the digital version. The DLC provides players with additional resources for a Mother Base area that will be available in THE PHANTOM PAIN. Mother Base is introduced during the events of GROUND ZEROES and plays a central role in the forthcoming METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN. Unlocked through downloadable code, the added staff for Mother Base will give GROUND ZEROES players an edge when they take on THE PHANTOM PAIN.

In addition, anyone that purchases GROUND ZEROES will be able to unlock exclusive content within the game to carry-over to THE PHANTOM PAIN. Prisoners of war and VIPs rescued in GROUND ZEROS will be added to the Mother Base staff in THE PHANTOM PAIN, providing GROUND ZEROES players an early in-game advantage; character skins will also be able to be carried over.

I hope that March update adds a Mute feature to SNAP because right now theres no way to mute whatever you have snapped while playing your games which is a stupid oversight. Try watching TV and a stream on twitch together shit will give you a headache cus you can't mute one while listening to the other.

If the only way you can defend a game is to

A. Immediately dog the competition (in this case Titanfall)

or

B. State that you don't expect innovation anymore in a shooter

That means that something is really wrong with it.

They on IGN defending The Order hard. I'm shocked that Sony let that trailer go out like that.

"Please show me one game now or coming on the xbox one that compares to The Order 1866 or Infamous? And those are first gen games. "

Can't wait for the comedy from the Wolfenstein article about there being no resolution/fps difference between the systems. Been a good week for Microsoft.

Sony has been getting hit hard all week. Closed 20 of 31 stores, laid off 1,000 workers. Laid off 50 Santa Monica(God of WAR) employees. New game also canceled. Bad week.
