Dreamcast Emulator Coming Soon to Xbox One

This summer, a Dreamcast emulator called WinDCe10 will be making its way to the Xbox One, allowing you to play all of your favorite Dreamcast games for the first time, with no region restrictions. Check out the announcement video below. It's not the most spirited announcement we've ever seen, but that's okay: we have enough excitement to go around already.

In case you're wondering, this isn't officially supported by Microsoft of Xbox. In other words, this isn't something you're going to find through the Xbox One games store. You're going to have to do a little bit of work yourself to get the Dreamcast emulator running on your Xbox One, but it's really not that difficult. Via HotHardware:

"We can forgive you if you didn't even realize that unsupported emulation on the Xbox One was supported. It's supported even without "rooting" your console; all you need to do is sign up for a developer account, switch an Xbox One to developer mode, and then sideload the custom software. Ultimately, the process of installation seems little different from installing emulators on Android, although since Google actually does allow emulators to be sold on its Play Store, that removes a few steps."

Sounds pretty simple, right? The Xbox One has turned into a pretty open system ever since Microsoft initiated the Universal Windows Platform, which allows developers to create apps which have a kind of functional parity between Windows 10 computers and Xbox One consoles. This was exploited a while back to bring an NES emulator to Xbox called Nesbox. That emulator made quite a splash, and we expect this Dreamcast emulator to do just as well.

For more information about WinDCe10, you can check out the official site here. If you're needing a little more guidance as to how to create a developer account on your Xbox One and sideload custom software, we'll leave that to Google. Google and YouTube are your friends, and there's a good chance that you'll be playing Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, and Shenmue on your Xbox soon. Perfect timing for me, since I just got this nifty little Dreamcast mug in the mail yesterday.

Mass Effect: Andromeda's next patch will improve character customization

Mass Effect: Andromeda's upcoming patch brings with it additional improvements to the character creator, a new romance option for Scott Ryder, and several multiplayer fixes. BioWare also went into detail about the company's decision to expand male romance options for Scott Ryder. The full blog post with patch notes can be read below.

Improved Character Creator

We’ve expanded the options available in the character creator, giving you greater control over your Ryder’s appearance. Two new heads were added, one male and one female, as well as a new complexion option and a greater range of available skin tones. We also unlocked all hairstyles for both sexes, and added a new bald option.

For players wanting to adjust their look mid-game, we added the ability to change your character’s appearance onboard the Tempest.

And for fans of Alec Ryder’s iconic appearance, you can now choose to keep the default Alec, rather than having his appearance be based on your custom Ryder.

Expanded Male Romance Options for Scott Ryder

Scott Ryder can now pursue Jaal as a romance option. There are several important reasons for this change:

Scott Ryder did not have a same-sex squadmate available as a romance option, nor could the achievement for completing three romances be achieved with only male same-sex partners. And as the angara have expressed their fluidity in how they perceive gender, it seemed only natural that Scott could have a relationship with Jaal.

However, we understand that a character’s orientation is an important part of what makes them feel real. The relationships with your crew are some of the most loved and cherished parts of our games, so we wanted to make sure we got it right. We consulted with members of the LGBTQ community, both externally and within our own studios. After carefully considering all feedback, we decided this was an important change to make, and one that made sense for Jaal, Scott, and the angara.

Our writing, editing, and animation teams worked together to ensure this change made sense for Jaal’s character, and the result is a relationship we hope feels as fulfilling and memorable for Scott as it does for Sara.

Single player
• Ryder’s appearance can now be changed onboard the Tempest
• Expanded the range of options available in the character creator
• Jaal can now be romanced by Scott Ryder
• Dialogue for Hainly Abrams was adjusted to change the flow of personal information she discusses with Ryder.
• Fixed issue with Nomad upgrades Shield Crafting quest
• Nexus level and cryo pod points are retroactively granted
• Vendors now carry weapon mods for Level 60-71 players
• Vendors now sell weapon augmentations for automatic fire, burst fire, and single-shot fire
• Improved clarity of descriptions for augmentations
• Plasma Charge system now works properly for shotguns
• Beam Emitter augmentation now causes guns to fire a constant beam with scaling damage based on the weapon’s damage per second
• (PC) Added experimental support for Dolby Vision™ technology

Multiplayer
• Stealth Grid challenge now increments properly
• Fiend no longer sprints when within 10 meters of target, and will decelerate to base speed
• Enabled movement correction during Fiend attacks to reduce incidence of players seeing Fiends attacking in the wrong direction
• Improved movement prediction for some enemies in tight spaces to reduce appearance of teleportation
• Fixed issue that prevented melee attacks if the revive icon was near center screen
• Fixed issue where ammo pick-up audio incorrectly played
• Fixed issue where Backlash could malfunction while moving
• Using Stealth and Recon Visor together no longer increases duration of invisibility for Turian Agent
• Fixed issue where weight reduction modifications wouldn’t reduce weight
• The Revive Pack Transmitter now displays the revive radius in the loadout screen
• Equipping the Cobra RPG now interrupts reloading
• Player turns to Adhi when getting synced to avoid teleportation issue
• Fixed issue where enemies would occasionally enter T-pose when hit
• Improved visual and audio cues for player ready status in Multiplayer lobbies
• Added “Lights” option to customization options

Microsoft confirms virtual reality won't be at E3 2017

With Microsoft’s E3 2017 press conference taking place in less than a week, some were expecting to hear mentions of virtual reality devices for Project Scorpio. It looks like we’ll have to wait a little bit longer for announcements according to company officials who said that Microsoft will not have any form of VR for Xbox consoles at E3. This is due to them currently focusing on mixed reality for PC.

Virtual reality for Project Scorpio is supposed to be arriving sometime next year, and Microsoft Technical Fellow Alex Kipman implied that when it does it could potentially be wireless.

Speaking to Polygon, Kipman said, "Our primary focus is making our mixed reality experiences a success on Windows 10 PCs. We believe that right now a Windows PC is the best platform for mixed reality as its open ecosystem and enormous installed base offer the best opportunity for developers, and Windows offers the most choices for consumers.”

“Windows has been the birthplace of a variety of technologies, and we believe this will hold for mixed reality too. Given the efforts we have underway on Windows for mixed reality, and our belief that console VR should be wireless, right now we are focused on developing mixed reality experiences for the PC, not on the console.”

Microsoft has already partnered with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and 3Glasses on a number of headsets for Windows Mixed Reality-ready PCs. If we want those experiences on Scorpio, we may have to wait until Microsoft can develop a wireless headset that is affordable.

A new Splinter Cell could be in development (EXCLUSIVE)

splinter-cell-5-e1496786829620.jpg

We inform you exclusively that a new Splinter Cell could be in development , according to the web Justia. E3 is just around the corner and it may be that Ubisoft chimes announcing the expected continuation of the Tom Clancy saga.

The web Justia collects a list of all the trademarks, offering data related to its activity, state of the licenses and services offered by these brands. And within the category of Splinter Cell we can observe a new license , which belongs to the company Ubisoft Entertainment. The registration date is very recent: May 28, 2017.

splinter-cell-1-e1496786210445.jpg

In the description of the tab we can see that some of the categories recorded are video games or eSports. It should also be noted that the only two movements to date have referred to the admission to processing of that registry. That is, Ubisoft has not renewed the Splinter Cell brand ( as it did with Microsoft and Scalebound ) for some subject related to its license, but has registered a new brand that bears the same name.

splinter-cell-3-e1496786380722.jpg

The Tom Clancy saga has been a very prolific saga for Ubisoft and has had representation practically every year. The last game in the series, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands , has been incredibly well received by the public. Although this title will continue to receive updates, the truth is that the saga of Tom Clancy that more ballots have to offer a new title, leaving aside Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, is certainly Splinter Cell.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist came out in 2013 , leaving an incredible taste to the public and critical. The game was praised for its history and gameplay, as well as for returning us to the purest Splinter Cell.

At the moment nothing is confirmed nor Ubisoft has officially pronounced about it.Even so, it’s time for Ubisoft to give us the purest stealth of Sam Fisher’s hand. And maybe this E3 has that luck.

Xbox's Mike Nichols‏ discredits study which said backward compatibility isn't used enough

A few days ago Ars Technica came out with a study saying that backward compatibility wasn't used. They were using some questionable math and quoting figures Microsoft shared in 2015. That alone should've been a clue that it was a bunch of nonsense.

However, Microsoft's Mike Nichols‏ just shared that around 50% of Xbox One owners use backward compatibility and those owners have played over 508 million hours of backward compatible games. That means that each gamer has played roughly 40 hours of backward compatible games. I wonder what Ars Technica will say now. Maybe next time they shouldn't be using flawed ways to collect data and quoting 2015 figures.

The Story Behind Mass Effect: Andromeda's Troubled Five-Year Development

Almost immediately, fans asked how this happened. Why was Andromeda so much worse than its predecessors? How could the revered RPG studio release such an underwhelming game? And, even if the problems were a little exaggerated by the internet’s strange passion for hating BioWare, how could Andromeda ship with so many animation issues?

I’ve spent the past three months investigating the answers to those questions. From conversations with nearly a dozen people who worked on Mass Effect: Andromeda, all of whom spoke under condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk about the game, a consistent picture has emerged. The development of Andromeda was turbulent and troubled, marred by a director change, multiple major re-scopes, an understaffed animation team, technological challenges, communication issues, office politics, a compressed timeline, and brutal crunch.

Many games share some of these problems, but to those who worked on it, Andromeda felt unusually difficult. This was a game with ambitious goals but limited resources, and in some ways, it’s miraculous that BioWare shipped it at all. (EA and BioWare declined to comment for this article.)

Do Microsoft's Xbox 'Project Scorpio' E3 teasers contain hidden messages?

In the build up to its E3 2017 press conference, Microsoft has released a series of videos teasing its upcoming "Project Scorpio" Xbox console. Sporting the tagline "Feel True Power," the videos continue to drive the narrative that the console will be the most powerful console on the market. These short teasers cycle through a foray of artistic images, but Microsoft also seems to be leaving some mysterious messages.

So far, three Project Scorpio E3 teasers have dropped across the various Xbox social network pages. As spotted by XboxIngame on Twitter, there's more to the teasers than meets the eye.

scorpio-tent-tease.jpg

In a video recently posted to the Xbox UK Facebook page, the message"6>4" can be seen plastered on the side of a tent around five seconds in. This could be a taunt at Sony's PlayStation 4 (PS4) Pro console, which sports 4.12 teraflops (TFLOPS) of computing power, compared to the heavily-marketed 6 TFLOPS touted in Project Scorpio's prerelease marketing.

scorpio-crowd-tease.jpg

In another video on the Facebook page, a cheering crowd is shown roughly five seconds into the teaser. With a sharp eye, you can see a hidden message disguised on a far-right wall, reading "X10S101-317."

While these numbers could have endless possibilities, there's a chance we may be seeing the first teaser of Project Scorpio's release date. With "X10S" potentially referring to the Project Scorpio console and "101317" representing a date of October 13, 2017, this could be the day the upcoming console hits shelves. The date would also fall on a Friday, which was the same weekday the original Xbox One console debuted in 2013.

Obviously, you should take this information with a pinch of salt, due to the obscurity of the message. It's easy to pull various speculation from this but it's really just a simple string of numbers. Still, given the circumstances, we can't rule this out.

project-scorpio-soc-2.jpg

It's easy to roll your eyes at these hidden messages, but they appear to be almost too obvious to be mere coincidence. Microsoft and Sony hasn't been afraid to throw cheeky jibes out in recent years, and this could be another example of the trend.

Xbox Scorpio now gives developers access to 9 GB of GDDR5 RAM just for games

Scorpio's gigantic 12GBs of GDDR5 RAM is an absolutely astonishing feat for a home console, but, as we all know, not all of that will be available on launch.

Scorpio’s initial specifications would allow game developers access to 8GBs of the 12GB pool available for games with the remaining four reserved for background system activities. Now, Xbox Vice President Mike Ybarra has announced that Xbox have let developers play with an extra gigabyte of RAM, bringing the total available RAM reserved just for games to 9GB. In comparison, Sony's PS4 Pro reserves 5GBs of its 8GB pool for games and is already releasing impressive games with this lower amount.

Ybarra also announced that games which don’t use the full 9GBs available to them will still have access to the rest as a cache, allowing faster loading and better texture streaming.

Documents connected to Cyberpunk 2077 are being held for ransom

In a strange bit of news this afternoon, CD Projekt RED has warned players that documents pertaining to early designs of Cyberpunk 2077 are being held for ransom.

The company announced on Twitter that an individual or individuals had contacted them to say that they were in possession of internal files and documents belonging to CD Projekt RED, including early designs connected to the developer's ambitious upcoming sci-fi RPG, Cyberpunk 2077.

These individuals threatened that if CD Projekt RED did not pay up a ransom, the files would be released online to the public. The company has contacted the appropriate legal authorities and has warned players to avoid any leaked information that doesn't come from an official source. According to the developer, the documents are "old and largely unrepresentative of the current vision for the game."

Cyberpunk 2077 was revealed over four years ago with a teaser trailer and does not yet have a release date. While information is limited, what we do know from job listings indicates that the game will feature flying vehicles. CD Projekt co-founder Michal Kiciński also believes that the game will be more successful than The Witcher 3.

Seagate Offers 4TB Game Drive for Xbox Game Pass

With over 100 games to download and play with Xbox Games Pass, a large external hard drive could come in very handy. Seagate hopes you choose its Xbox-branded storage solution.

544397-seagate-game-drive-2017-seagate.jpg

Microsoft launched Xbox Game Pass on June 1 as a $9.99 per month subscription. Once signed up, Microsoft will unlock over 100 games for you to download and play on your Xbox One taken from both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 games libraries. And every month new games will be added while others are removed. You may need some extra storage for all those games, though, so Microsoft and Seagate teamed up to provide it.

Seagate is launching the Game Drive for Xbox Game Pass Special Edition external hard drive, which plugs into the USB port on your Xbox One. It's white and Xbox branded so as to fit right in sitting next to an Xbox One S. And as you'd expect, it's plug-and-play with the Xbox One$294.99 at Amazon automatically detecting the drive being connected and walking you through the setup process. It takes just a few minutes.

Seagate says the drive is easy to slip into a bag and requires no separate power cable or plug. That means visiting a friend's house (and remembering your Xbox Live login details) means you can play Xbox Game Pass games on any Xbox One using this hard drive.

Two versions of the Game Drive will be offered. The first is a 2TB model costing $89.99 and including one month of free access to Xbox Game Pass. There's also a 4TB model for $129.99 which includes two months of Xbox Game Pass access for free. Clearly if you can afford the extra cash, the 4TB model is better value and more convenient if you intend on downloading and playing a lot of games.

If the name Game Drive sounds familiar, it's because this isn't the first time Seagate has offered external storage for Xbox. The Game Drive for Xbox first appeared in 2015, the casing was Xbox green, and you could get 2TB of storage for $99.99.

GameStop Customers' Credit Cards May Have Been Stolen, Company Says

qm1oqs7a5tnjirsbsxeg.jpg

A very bad year for GameStop got even worse this week, as the retailer sent out letters to online customers informing them that their credit cards may have been stolen.

In the letter, which several Kotaku readers (and an editor-in-chief) received yesterday, GameStop says that breachers may have obtained names, addresses, and credit card information from anyone who “placed or attempted to place orders on our website from August 10, 2016 to February 9, 2017.”

“We are notifying you because you placed or attempted to place an order on www.GameStop.com during this time period using a payment card ending in [number],” the letter says, confirming a report from earlier this year.

In a statement to Kotaku this morning, the company said: “GameStop identified and addressed a potential security incident that was related to transactions made on GameStop’s website during a specific period of time. GameStop mailed notification letters to customers who made purchases during that time frame advising them of the incident and providing information on steps they can take.”

This news comes at a tough time for GameStop. The retailer has been struggling to adapt to the video game industry’s move toward digital games, and it has taken fire for its controversial Circle of Life program, which uses quotas to measure employee performance.
