Why people in low-income areas choose Cheetos over fresh vegetables

My moms was healthy to the point we hated it growing up
and at that age we ate what she fed us or school lunch

I can remember eating Tofu in the late 70s early 80s:angry:

moms had no sweets when we were kids :smh:

Only cereal we had was grape nuts or wheaties and we had to use honey.

We had no PBJ it was PBH :smh:

Sugar really does make you soft....its bad for muscle.

Any athlete should stay away from sugar.

DO THIS: Stretch or try to touch your knees with your forehead.

Stay off sugar for two week and then do it...watch what happens.

I see grown ass men eating honey buns i be like :smh:

White Sugar is straight garbage for muscles.

when i typed it i heard that little man in my head say

"now watch one of these niggas blah blah..."

BIG UPS MOMS!!!

LOL This is what i like to hear though. You hated it growing up but you THANK HER for it now. I keep my kids off that stuff, i kept them off it from a young age to the point now they don't even want it. And don't like it.

Unless mama makes it, it's not good for you. They pretty much believe this. Mother was concerned about your well being as any mother SHOULD. She had knowledge. And that knowledge spread to you guys just like i have it and it's spread to my kids.

This is where we falter as a people. It's not the food itself that's out there, it's just the lack of KNOWLEDGE we all had about it. We didn't think cheetos was going to do any harm. Cheetos was GOOD! Full of fat! Sugar!

My mother didn't know just how bad sugar was. My mother didn't know just how bad FAT was. Most of our modern society DOESN'T! And people lay around here and complain and do

NOTHING.

You do nothing about it. I'm annoying as hell when i see stuff like this going on because i will step to that woman and lay the hard word to her. I do it softly, i do it in a manner of which they will be receptive too...But i'm concerned about it.

At our community center we have food lists, and healthy eating classes, at the day care the kids are given not 1 single snack that has processed sugars in it. We instilled these things because we do care. You can't make these people do this stuff but damn if you can't try.

LOL...you trying to say I got hairy pitts?!?

As a kid, you go after the stuff that tastes better, hands down...AND, the stuff that's advertised on TV, regardless of health value. When I was younger, all I wanted to try was a hot pocket cause the commercials were all over TV...I begged and PLEADED with my mom (she was not about frozen dinners or any of that mess.) So, I begged so much one day, she bought it for me, and made me eat it. It was SOOOO disgusting *and smelled, for some reason* I never asked again

America has got to find a way to make "healthy eating" cool and economical if you want more low-income people to buy into it. I would encourage them to start their own community markets, and get kids into growing fresh fruits and veggies, so that they can feel ownership (and pride) over it. I know the first lady is into getting kids to exercise, but, not sure how much focus is put on healthy eating for kids.

Never happen. Healthy eating isn't profitable. They don't make money off of fruits and veggies.

Another thing is eating healthy is just one side, the other is exercise and fitness...Hopefully, they will both be promoted hard...

But not Trader Joes. Once I stopped fucking with Whole Foods and started shopping at Trader Joes, I saved so much fucking money. The problem is, there's little to no access to TJ in a lot of areas if you don't drive.

I go there all the time. I got a feeling they are gonna be big eventually, because they found a way to make healthy/organic food affordable...

The little fat kids in the hood need this guy to whip them into shape...If he can get fat black women in shape, then you know the kids aint a problem:lol:

The one I go to here in Chi is awesome in that its right near one of the farmer's markets I go to alot. Their spice selection and cooking demos are outstanding (G.Garvin was here about 4mos ago)

that is a bunch of bullshit bruh you can get healthy foods on sale just like you can get snack foods on sale. a bag of cheetoes cost you three bucks for the family size a bag of carrots cost 79 cents. you can glaze those carrots up and those things will taste better than candy. If you know how to shop you can stretch your dollar and get some great healthy choices.

btw if you have to buy cheetoes and other stuff why not buy the baked option.

I melt all sorts of fresh cheeses over veggies to make them edible for the people who aren't used to eating this way. Honey, Cheese, i make up quick sauces.

There's your snack boom. I steam the veggies in my insta steamer, pour some avacado and jalapeno sauce over them. BOOM!

People eat those up quick as can be. Takes 5 minutes.

I show mothers where live how to do this. And i show them the cost. I show them that they CAN save money by NOT eating that crap food. All it takes is a LITTLE...A MODICUM of get off your butt time to prepare this food for your family.

I even show them infusions where you infuse the veggies with flavor. This takes longer but it's a kick butt flavor.

This is what i knock people for. People like some of the ones complaining about such n such in this thread. Complaining about fat women, fat kids, But DO

NOTHING

ABOUT

IT.

You who do this? Claim to have all this knowledge but yet what do you do with it? Who do you give it to? The problem isn't cost...the problem isn't the types of food. The problem is people just don't KNOW any better.

And the people who DO know better? Don't DO anything about it.

Where I live we have a affordable farmers market veggies fruits breads etc. all type of access to the place. But the hours is 8 to 12 but I forgot if you went out drinkin the night before your lazy ass wont wake up. And these so called folks that say they cant afford veggies and fruits always got that cig hanging from their lips.

This is how it is. There's so many things out there designed to kill us. It's hard to keep count lol.

And we have a co-op here that i go too. SUPER CHEAP. Sometimes we even just trade. When it's grocery time of the month first spot is the Co-Op we hit that at 9am. We have our path already selected when we get there. 30 minutes and we're out. Back to the house, drop off that load, then on to the Farmes Market. Same thing, takes a little longer cuz it's bigger. And i get more food there in bulk.

Back to the house unload, then to Wal Mart. All that i'm done by 12 - 1. You can buy cheap, you can save money, The wifey clips coupons it's her favorite past time cuz she's a miserly lil something and she just lovvvvves saving money.

She even gives coupons as gifts. She thinks she's really doin somethin lmao. People be like :hmm:

I shop for up to 12 people and i still come out in the low hundreds when i shop. This woman who i work with when i got her on the program, she was shopping for 4 and spending up to a 1000 a month in food. If you're shopping for a family and you're spending a THOUSAND dollars on food in a month for 4 people? You're doin it way way way wrong.

believe it or not, fresh veggies cost more. Ever bought an apple at Exxon? costs more than a giant bag of doritos. I paid $1.30 for a tomato the other day. :smh:

Everything is more expensive at gas stations. That's the point. Don't buy stuff from there. Think and plan ahead. Carry a snack with you if you're going to be out and about and know you're going to be hungry. Or better yet. Just drink water, until you can get someplace where you can buy something properly.

Convenience is 1 of the downfalls of our people as well. Laziness. Ill preparedness.

Go to an average public housing chick house, and check their food cabinet and tell me how many spices they have other than salt, pepper and seasoning salt. That should be a hint and a half, right there.

Thank you. It's a crock of shit excuse.

It's where you buy it. I'll be damned if I buy 'fresh' ingredients from a supermarket or store.

I don't know why I'm bothering replying but you do that to most parents and they'll tell you to spin on their middle finger. You're telling me if someone pulled you to the side and told you what to feed your kids, you'll take it as friendly advice?

Don't answer that actually. I know you'll be on that BS.

Nope, i'm going to answer it. You know why? Because i CARE about my family. If someone were to give me advice on what not to buy? How to save even more money and how to feed my kids better? I'm going to listen.

Just because YOU'RE childish dolt doesn't mean the rest of us have to be. Just because you're used to filthy ignorance doesn't mean everyone is.

Grow up.

Americans just don't give a shit. I hate when they make it a poor issue when Save-a-lots have the cheapest produce in fucking town. It's a myth that you have to eat at whole foods to be healthy. And nobody is forcing low-income people to fry chicken instead of baking it. Cooking oil costs more money than water in a fucking pan.

And don't give me that education shit. Muthafuckas will flat out tell you they going to eat what they fucking want.

In today's world, it is more a discipline issue and people in low-income issues tend to be less disciplined.

You’re Physically Incapable of Resisting Fried Chicken

Research! Sometimes it tells us that alcohol is good for us; other times it tells us that city living makes us all obese. But today it tells us that fatty, salty food can trigger druglike reactions in our brains. Per U.C. Irvine's director of drug discovery and development, in the Times: "[W]e have this evolutionary drive to recognize fat; and when we have access to it, to consume as much as we possibly can." That certainly explains why people in low-income areas choose Cheetos over fresh vegetables, or why Michelle Obama felt compelled to hit Shake Shack recently, or why we couldn't stop ourselves from ordering a mac-and-cheese-stuffed burger at White & Church the other week. But it isn't just fat!

Research also says "salt is addictive in the same way as cigarettes or hard drugs," according to the Daily Mail. "Professor Derek Denton, of the University of Melbourne, said: 'In this study we have demonstrated that one classic instinct, the hunger for salt, is providing neural organisation that subserves addiction to opiates and cocaine.'"

So there you have it. Fried chicken and cocaine: not all that dissimilar.

What happened to the good old days when you could just buy a live chicken, duck, goose etc. Take it home and put a sharp blade to its neck, remove the feathers and gut the bird. Now thats some fresh meat.

I've seen people live off of chinese food and mcdonalds and don't know what a good home cooked meal is like. :smh: sad shit when you see how big those families are getting from bad eating habits.

went to visit my cousins and theie new baby less then 2 years old...

they were giving her milk with STRAWBERRY QUIK because she didnt like the taste:eek:

And giving her "party mix" (pretzels cheese balls etc. for a snack

WHOA...tried to tell them and was told I was being "white" and unrealistic and at least she was eating...

:smh:

Michelle Obama's Shake Shack Burger: Much Ado About Something?

gty_michelle_obama_nt_110711_wg.jpg

OMG. Michelle Obama ate a burger and fries.

According to the Washington Post, the First Lady ordered a highly caloric meal of burger, fries, chocolate shake and Diet Coke at the new Shake Shack in Washington D.C. (The Post calculated the amount to be about 1,700 calories. For more info on the calories in Shake Shack meals, check this out: http://www.nutritionix.com/shake-shack/nutrition-calculator.)

Now, some are crying foul, considering the First Lady has been leading the charge against child obesity through the Let's Move campaign to promote exercise and healthy diet for America's kids.

The pseudo-scandal is reminiscent of the controversy last month over President Obama's sausage-featured photo-op with British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Is the criticism warranted? To what degree should the Obamas be perfect role models of a healthy diet?

Neil Barnard, M.D. president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, wrote on The Huffington Post:

The First Lady's signature anti-obesity campaign -- Let's Move -- is no match for the administration's ongoing purchases of sausage, cheese, burgers and other fatty foods that are sent to schools everyday. And the U.S. Department of Agriculture continues to bow to the interests of meat lobbyists and heavily subsidize the production of meat and other unhealthful foods.

Good Morning America points out that last year Michelle Obama told ABC News:

I love burgers and fries, you know? And I love ice cream and cake. So do most kids. We're not talking about a lifestyle that excludes all that. That's the fun of being a kid. That's the fun of being a human.

WOW 8Supremo...I've read tons of cynical comments here in BGOL land, but this had to be the first to make me respond to it directly. I have to admit in the past my wife and I were guilty of buying largely "fast and convenient" foods for our kids to eat when we went shopping. You know, the kind that they could just toss in the microwave after school or when friends were over? The wake up call came last year as we were taking physicals as part of the foster care program approval process. My Dr. mentioned that I was getting close to needing my cholesterol treated and HBP too. He sent us to a nutritionist who didn't pull any punches (smart sista who knows her shit) and lit into us for trying to eat ourselves into an early grave. And all of this is with me being right around the military approved BMI for my height (5"8, 195). I'm learning now that fitness alone is not enough...from listening to her and hell a lot of current information I got here from you guys. Wifey and I bypass Whole Foods (aint taking out a loan to go shopping) and hit 2 local farmer's markets on the regular. Instead of junk? Bowls of fruit sit on the table from them to grab when they want a snack. Yeah we will still do Fast Food on occasion as a treat or if we are out shoe shopping or something like that. 6 outta 7 days? We take turns cooking. I've decided to be 40 and FAN damn TABULOUS. Can't really do that from an early grave. I don't go around standing on a soap box about it, but I do share what I'm learning with my friends and family when I get the "Oh, you look so good to be 40" comments

:bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo:

Oh u go to that one, try the one by collingswood speedline on sat 8 to 12. Why I got a feeling you would leave me in the woods:(:giggle:

The Obamas don't live sedentary lifestyles.

The Obamas have their own garden at the White House.

The Obamas are not low-income.

Can't compare a gorilla to a shrimp, know what I'm saying?

This is how cheap it really is to eat healthy. Post a $50 dollar a week budget here is one.

A bag of beans
bag of dried black beans costs $1.89
A bag of rice
Himalayan Pride Indian Basmati Rice, 5 Pound Bags (Pack of 2) $19.11
A box of cereal
Kashi GOLEAN Cereal $3
A variety of veggies especially green leafy ones
Kale, Spinach, Broccoli, etc. $6
A bag of potatos
Red Potatoes 1lb $1.50
A large onion
Bag of Medium sized onions $1.50
A bag of apples
1 lbs apples $1.50
A bag of oranges
Oranges @ 5 for $2
A bag of pasta
Barrilla Whole Wheat Penne $1.25
Milk(cow, soy, almond, or coconut)
An average gallon of milk cost about $3.50 to $3.99. Organic milk, however, is more expensive. It costs about $4.00 to about $5.50 depending on what brand you buy.
Bread
I keep seeing loaves of bread for about $3.75 in the grocery stores and $4.00 -$5.00 in bakeries/bread stores.
Cheese(optional)
Nuts
Planters Deluxe Mixed Nuts, 32.5-Ounce Tubs (Pack of 2) $21.64

This ^^^ can be done for about $50 or less per week, maybe about $35 if you are really savy. The problem is that we depend on the microwave and do not care to plan and prepare our own meals.

of course this would last AT LEAST a month...:D:D

I was sitting in the parking lot of 7-11 the other day

watching these elementary school aged kids

You would be amazed at how many of these youngans live off chips and sodas.

The $2.00 hood meal

Shit is sad

So its a hood problem? Suburban kids don't go to the store and get the same shit?
