Why people in low-income areas choose Cheetos over fresh vegetables

You’re Physically Incapable of Resisting Fried Chicken

20090727_momofukuchicken_560x375.jpg

Research! Sometimes it tells us that alcohol is good for us; other times it tells us that city living makes us all obese. But today it tells us that fatty, salty food can trigger druglike reactions in our brains. Per U.C. Irvine's director of drug discovery and development, in the Times: "[W]e have this evolutionary drive to recognize fat; and when we have access to it, to consume as much as we possibly can." That certainly explains why people in low-income areas choose Cheetos over fresh vegetables, or why Michelle Obama felt compelled to hit Shake Shack recently, or why we couldn't stop ourselves from ordering a mac-and-cheese-stuffed burger at White & Church the other week. But it isn't just fat!

Research also says "salt is addictive in the same way as cigarettes or hard drugs," according to the Daily Mail. "Professor Derek Denton, of the University of Melbourne, said: 'In this study we have demonstrated that one classic instinct, the hunger for salt, is providing neural organisation that subserves addiction to opiates and cocaine.'"

So there you have it. Fried chicken and cocaine: not all that dissimilar.

I learned this years ago. Refined salt and sugar don't even exist in my house.

went to visit my cousins and theie new baby less then 2 years old...

they were giving her milk with STRAWBERRY QUIK because she didnt like the taste:eek:

And giving her "party mix" (pretzels cheese balls etc. for a snack

WHOA...tried to tell them and was told I was being "white" and unrealistic and at least she was eating...

:smh:

And you flip it on'em with "And she'll never stop..."

The problem with people is that they don't think things through. Part of this issue is there's no father there in order to think it through for the woman. That's kind of HIS job. With many mothers their only concern is FEEDING the kid. Making sure they eat. Not even making sure they eat right, we can't be worried about that, we just have to make sure they're fed. And once they're fed then other things....

One of my BIGGEST peeves is when people say what a CHILD won't do. "They won't eat this..." "They won't eat that..."

:hmm:

A Child will eat whatever the blue freakin frack you MAKE it eat. Giving kids that garbage is easier for YOU. So you gladly do it.

Show your cousins the benefits and the costs of chaing their eating habits, and show them the negatives of what is going to happen when you give a BABY sugary powdery additives in their food. As well as fattening snacks and the like.

Education is key.

Believe it or not a lot of times a persons income level has nothing to do with the food choices that they make. Especially here in the states. I know for a fact that many people, even poor people, have the funds to buy good foods and access to places that provide goods foods, but they stil choose to buy BS.

Here in America most of the people that start living healthy lifestyles dont live healthy lifestyles because theyve increased their income, they start living healthy lifestyles after theyve increased their knowledge on what it takes to live a healthy life.

My question is what have any of you done besides just sit, watch and complain about your Brotha's and Sista's feeding themselves BS?

Im dont have all the knowledge on whats good and whats bad for every individual...but I know enough to help someone. Being sort of a rookie Vegetarian Im still going through trails and errors myself...but when ever Im in the grocery store around the 1st of the month (cause thats usually when a lot of poor people stock up on food) Im always sparking up a convo and helping someone make better food choses.

Simple shit like telling them to buy the Water Melon and Grapes with seeds instead of the one without seeds. Telling them to get frozen vegetables instead of sodium/metal filled canned vegetables. Telling them to get the Jelly that was sweetened with fruit sugar instead of HFCS. If they eat butter...telling them to buy the butter without the partially Hydrogenated soy, canola, vegetable etc oils instead of the ones with it.

If we started communicating with each other instead of frowning at one another then maybe these type of threads wont have to be created.

Michelle Obama's Shake Shack Burger Indulgence Defended by Nutritionists

Stop the presses, Michelle Obama might have eaten a hamburger.

The blogosphere erupted with criticism almost immediately after the Washington Post reported Monday that the first lady sat down at a newly opened Shake Shack in Washington D.C., where she ordered a ShackBurger, fries, a chocolate shake and a Diet Coke. According to the popular burger joint's website, that's a 1,556-calorie meal.

Many critiqued the first lady's public display of Shake Shack love as she continues to advocate for her Let's Move! campaign, an initiative to eliminate childhood obesity.

But even as the first lady-turned-health-advocate chowed down on a meal that contains almost an entire day's recommended calorie intake, most nutrition experts are telling people to relax.

"[This is an] unfortunate invasion of privacy for Mrs. Obama," said Alice Lichtenstein, professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts School of Medicine in Boston. "She has kept her weight constant and engages in regular physical activity. An occasional indulgence is fine. For many people, that is what helps them keep on track most of the time."

Most experts agreed with Lichtenstein, while saying that the first lady's lunch is being unnecessarily scrutinized.

"While the goal for healthy eating is to limit choices like fries and shakes, occasional treats won't hurt. The problem is that many Americans do this more than occasionally," said Connie Diekman, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis. "It is good to see that even someone as committed to health as the first lady knows that healthy eating is about balance not perfection."

One meal does not make up a dietary pattern, said Dr. David Katz, founder of the Yale Prevention Center.

"She ordered it, but we don't know how much she ate," he said. "Perhaps she did what is often advised under such circumstances; eat half, and wrap up the rest."

Dr. Randall Zusman, director of hypertension at Massachusetts General Hospital, said, "The problem for many persons is that their baseline diets and lifestyles are unhealthy; the norm for them is unhealthy and in that setting, a 1,500-cal lunch is only a small part of a much larger problem."

The first lady has acknowledged her occasional splurge on such foods in the past. Last year, she told ABC News' Robin Roberts, "I love burgers and fries, you know? And I love ice cream and cake. So do most kids. We're not talking about a lifestyle that excludes all that. That's the fun of being a kid. That's the fun of being a human."

Not to say that all medical experts were completely without their concerns.

"There are immediate adverse effects independent of weight," noted Dr. Peter McCullough, consultant cardiologist and chief academic and scientific officer at St. John Providence Health System, Providence Park Heart Institute, Warren, Mich., while citing the immediate cardiovascular implications of the meal.

And Leslie Bonci, director of sports nutrition at University of Pittsburgh Medical, advised via email: "Shake OR fries OR burger, not all 3 at once!"

But Katz of the Yale Prevention Center had advice for those who sought to make an example of the first lady's lunch.

"I invite only those whose diets are housed with no walls of glass to hurl a burger in the first lady's direction on the basis of this one lunch," Katz said.

the only healthy food option in 90% of the hoods out there is steamed broccoli and white rice from the chinese restaurant

all the stores, fruit stands and grocery stores that sell fruits and veggies only sell the moldy, old, beatup and shitty tasting produce in the hood

i wish i was exaggerating about any of this but after bouncin around different hoods in NYC i see the same shit everywhere

of course this would last AT LEAST a month...:D:D

Get beans cheaper than that. For 2 bucks at the spanish store you get black beans a giant pack.

For cereal, you get a box of oatmeal. Honey. 5 bucks lasts you a month.

I bake my own bread.

Total cost of that is Probably 5 dollars and i can make 10 loaves out of that.

I keep a 10 gallon bucket of rice in the house at all times(brown)
That costs 17 dollars and 10gallons with a normal family should last you 4- 5 months.

I get fish from the fish market. I get meat from the meat market. And because my family only eats meat 2 - 3 times a week. You can spend just 10 bucks here if you're precise, weekly.

You can get veggies much cheaper than you can in the grocery store by going to your co-op and check it out...OR

You could just grow your own veggies. It doesn't require alot of room. Grow your own potatos, grow your own leafy veggies. For a little elborw grease, a lil vitamin D sunshine, and water, oxygen from the life of outdoors working the soil, You're putting your energy there, and it's growing because you're doing it.

Doesn't take alot. I have friends who live in an apartment and grow veggie patches at a friends house.

People for the most part are just uneducated and lazy.

....lol

Based off what Ive heard and seen Michelle say and do, I know that she has knowledge on whats good and whats bad. A healthy person eating a burger and fries a few times out of every month doesnt equate to someone who eats that BS everyday of their life. People just lack discipline and dont know how to eat in moderation.

Everyone should be allowed a cheat day imo. My cheat day is today. I bags of honey buns, hot okey-doke popcorn, butter fingers, vitners hot curls, soy ice cream etc etc. all in the fridge. Ill eat till i feel sick today..then get back on track tomorrow.

yeah. a lot of the fruits and veggies that are sold in the hood are exported from BS Mexico farms and other hostage/shit hole locations. Once fruits and veggies get detached from their source they immediate start to lose nutritional value. Thats why I tell people to buy frozen if they dont have access to Market places the buy from local farms.

Heres a link to search for farmer markets all over the US.
http://www.localharvest.org/

BTW...Dont be mesmerized by the whole buy organic propaganda. Theres plenty of fruits and veggies that should be brought organic, but theres also plenty that dont need to be brought organic...like pineapples, Cantaloupe, asparagus and onions.

Once again..food deserts are a problem....but theyre not the main problem. knowledge is power.

DAMN

I understand it takes effort and some are unable to make the time or afraid of making the commitment.

Look I think we can agree that EVERYTHING doesnt have to be organic...

and unfortunately in our current culture words like "healthy" and "Organic" have been equated to EXPENSIVE.

The Right Wing has derided healthy eating exercise and environmentally conscience to mean wimp.

They even attacked the first lady...

And it IS expensive to adopt a healthy lifestyle, it just is.

And expensive doesn't only mean monetarily, I mean cooking your own food, doing research, joining a co-op etc.

Its easier and cheaper to eat junk food.

And alot of low income family don't even know that food stamps/benefit cards are accepted at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Food Co-ops and Farmers Markets ...all over NY/NJ and the entire country

But I dont want to label people stupid and lazy.

It doesnt help that experts switch up all the time because of fad diets and such and one minute this is healthy and the next it isnt.

I remember when everyone was eating and drinking soy and then some research said it WASN'T good for you.

But then it was good again.

And our pediatrician (one of the hospital chiefs) told us not to bother with organic milk...

after all that stuff about hormones scared us silly.

I am happy to see in this thread it isnt about money but it is JUST A CHOICE.

And you are free to do as you please.

But we do have a responsibility as a culture to make information available.

And to create a climate where it is cool to eat healthy...

I've seen the Amish out in north Philly the hood of all hoods selling some of the freshest best tasting fruits and veggies you have ever had. So again more excuses less solutions are coming out of the thread.

obesity epidemic is not the food for the most part especially kids!! Most of us have gotten lazy! Bottom line! When i was a kid there were fat kids still n we all played outside ate junk food n played some more! But the kids were still fat n those that were skinny just stayed skinny! Most kids play video games n rarely r out running up n down the street now a days.. n when u get older they say exercise most black rarely walk around to the corner store.. so i mean that mostly i feel makes us that has gain weight stay over weight. Plus people just dnt wanna cook which brings us back to lazy! Even if the health food was right there, it wouldnt happen unless it was cooked already.. here in the Chi, we have a lot of turkey places popping n a lot of people r starting to go there, but me i just dnt like turkey, but maybe one day ill give it a try!!

So, I used this argument (the basis for the article) to argue with my brother about the gun laws.

People who have below average intelligence and are in an environment where its better to be tough than smart, which is inundated by firearms, legal or illegal, people will choose the most efficient way to eliminate a problem. They choose guns. Just the same way the people will choose "fast" food over healthy food. Its easier to get a gun in the 'hood" rather than trusting the police. If you called the police, you will be looked upon as being weak.

I know I maybe off topic here, but if you inundate an environment with a particular item, its hard for undisciplined, below avg intelligent people to have the courage to say no. Add to that the cost of a better item, and you see why its important that we have or restrict certain items within lower class communities.

fuck are u talkin about:confused:
public school strikes again:smh:

flamin hots and cheese>>>

now all these gas stations are all arabs and habibi's

they know what us niggas want to eat. and they supply the demand.

Went shopping the other day and saw this women who was on food stamps and or wic. She was fat looking unhealthy with four fat children, and in their cart they had nothing but junk food.:smh:
I know there are going to be those who say, so what why give a fuck what the next person is eating, all that is fine and dandy, except when those motherfuckers get sick and have to be hospitalized who is going to foot the bill?
Imagine if you are a hard worker and try to stay fit, all your life, however you suddenly get sick and the doctor tells you the hospital cant help you because you are not properly covered. How will it make you feel that someone who could care less about their health, someone who is most likely to fuck it it up if they ever get better, gets treated while you have to suffer.Sorry to say but this is the reality for millions of people in this country and in these hard times, people will only put up with so much bullshit.

Don't believe the hype if you as a working individual is not getting good coverage trust and believe those on the system are not getting any better care than you. When I lost my job I had one of those low income/medicade type plans :smh: you get the most f_cked up 'care' allowed. You get seen by residents in dirty lab coats looking up symptons in a handbook :smh: Could not wait to get back to work so I could get some decent health insurance.

And most inner city stores don't sell fresh fruit or vegetables.
that is why there is always such a big stink over food deserts that don't have a grocery store.

and when you find the rare store that does carry it,it tends to be very over priced.

my daughter loves fruit and eats it until its gone. she loves wendy's because they sell those fruit salads

Went to visit my friend in BK wanted to get some yogurt to make a dessert all I she had in her neighborhood were bodegas and couldn't find one carton of yogurt :smh:

My mom explained nutrition to us kids when we were making our way in the 80s. Fast food / junk food = quick / easy. No prep' time needed, and obviously it's more flavorful. Also, junk = EMPTY CALORIES AND VERY FILLING. So you get a quick fix, which is why people turn to 'em. Just rip open the bag or plastic and dig in. Why the fuck do you want to pay more for something that's "healthy" and doesn't taste as good (or lacks flavor) and has prep'/clean-up time involved? Hence the vicious cycle in many communities ...

This shit has NOTHING to do with being poor. I grew up poor and we never ate any of that junk food. This has everything to do with BABIES HAVING BABIES.
Only a CHILD would feed another child Cheese Doodles or hard assed fried chicken and greasy rice from the corner Chinese Restaurant and call it a meal.
Please believe mature GROWN ASS women are not feeding their children that garbage. Even my 21 year old knows better

Agreed!! American is the richest nation and the fattest. Can we stop with the poor excuse?????????

First of all, they don't choose. The choice is made for them whether they/we know it or not. It's all location. There are multiple corner stores in every hood. I knew this growing up but witnessing it was even more heartbreaking.

Anyone familiar with Macon, GA understands that the Southside, Westside, and Eastside are virtually all hood. I was cable contracting with a childhood friend of mine a few years ago at night. We would be out there long enough to see the kids catch the bus in the morning. I had never physically witnessed candy, chips, baked goods, soda, and Gatorade being consumed in the morning as a meal for breakfast. I mean, it literally blew my mind. None of the kids doing this had made it to middle or high school yet.

Now, I knew it went on but seeing it is what made my heart hurt. I then understood attentions spans, learning disorders, behavioral problems, and health problems all at once. My mind could not conceive having any of that sh!t before noon growing up in my house. I have to give it to mom dukes. Kellog's Corn Flakes with the rooster. Honeycomb and Honey Nut Cherrios if she felt you had been obedient. She cooked every muthaf*ckin' night. No frozen food, we got Chic-fil-A and McDonalds fries some Friday's and maybe on a good report card day, and in the spring and summer she sent our asses outside to play until she said we could come in. I did not eat my first frozen dinner until I was on my own at 22.

Now, her father was a PORK farmer. So from the rooter to the tooter all your life BUT knew how to make better choices for HER family. In the early 90's she switched everything out that was normally beef and pork for chicken and turkey and we never looked back. She was always on the fruit and veggie kick so that didn't have to change.

Starts at home. Plain and simple.

Well fuck what you niggas talking about right now I'm hungry and I'm going to white castle

It's comes down to one simple fact..."some people just don't know any better". It's not an excuse, it's just reality. In my house, all we drink is water. That's all my daughter will drink. Some people have not been educated by their caretakers as to what foods and beverages are best for their health.

C/S They just don't know any better. I'll tell you another thing. The recession has hit me. My grocery budget doesn't get me near as much as it used to. So you know what I did? I planted me a little raised bed garden. You know why? because my grandmother used to have me out there on my hands and knees helping her with hers, so it was just in me.

These are some early shots from about 2 months ago. Greens, tomatos, cucumbers, carrots, banana and bell peppers. got some onions down on the other end. Watermelon. It doesn't produce as much as I want, but I'm still learning and I know what I did wrong so next year will be better. Thats why I started small. Theres some kids on the block that would come tear up my plants, play in my dirt. I didn't get mad, I made them help me replant that shit and gave them their own little section to grow their own stuff. They've been good about it too, well as good as 7-8 year olds can be I guess. They like to get dirty anyway, so win-win I say.

Just think if everybody in the projects started making community gardens. all that unused dirt and young labor just being wasted. The new trend down here is teaching them how to do it at school. Damn near all the elementary schools around here have some sort of garden, and the kids get to eat what they grow. At the upper levels, junior high I mean, some of them have been given permission to use unused lots to grow big ass gardens. They do a good job too.

Theres a guy I know, a farmer, who goes around to the corner stores in the hood and sells the storeowners fruits and veggies really cheap. Just enough to fill a few baskets by the register. He takes a loss so these kids will have some better, more affordable healthy choices to fuckin hot chips. They rarely buy the shit though.

I dunno, you can't save everybody i guess.

I need to get my parents to come over and help me get a garden started. I remember growing up, my mother always had a garden going (even if it was just in a small corner of the backyard). I have a pretty decent sized back yard so I can get a nice size garden going. Just need to get the shit started.
