Why people in low-income areas choose Cheetos over fresh vegetables

That does sound funny though.

And props to your moms for keeping it healthy.

MOMS WAS AN ALL AROUND BEAST

The shit i used to be so fucking mad at her for
i grew to love her for as a man.

America....the only country where the poor are heavier than the rich.

Thats deep shit when you think about it.

Had a discussion with my wife this morning when i
read the label on wheat bread she bought with high
fructose corn syrup. Sad you have to pay more for
bread that doesn't have a certain ingredient.

shit makes no sense.

trader joes is like a fancy walmart all they sell is their products. :smh::smh::smh: i hate that store every time i go there all i see is a bunch of "natural women" with hairy pitts.

their flavored salsa is great over some salmon or other types of fish though :D

LOL...you trying to say I got hairy pitts?!?

As a kid, you go after the stuff that tastes better, hands down...AND, the stuff that's advertised on TV, regardless of health value. When I was younger, all I wanted to try was a hot pocket cause the commercials were all over TV...I begged and PLEADED with my mom (she was not about frozen dinners or any of that mess.) So, I begged so much one day, she bought it for me, and made me eat it. It was SOOOO disgusting *and smelled, for some reason* I never asked again

America has got to find a way to make "healthy eating" cool and economical if you want more low-income people to buy into it. I would encourage them to start their own community markets, and get kids into growing fresh fruits and veggies, so that they can feel ownership (and pride) over it. I know the first lady is into getting kids to exercise, but, not sure how much focus is put on healthy eating for kids.

Went shopping the other day and saw this women who was on food stamps and or wic. She was fat looking unhealthy with four fat children, and in their cart they had nothing but junk food.:smh:
I know there are going to be those who say, so what why give a fuck what the next person is eating, all that is fine and dandy, except when those motherfuckers get sick and have to be hospitalized who is going to foot the bill?
Imagine if you are a hard worker and try to stay fit, all your life, however you suddenly get sick and the doctor tells you the hospital cant help you because you are not properly covered. How will it make you feel that someone who could care less about their health, someone who is most likely to fuck it it up if they ever get better, gets treated while you have to suffer.
Sorry to say but this is the reality for millions of people in this country and in these hard times, people will only put up with so much bullshit.
Healthy food cost alot of money. It is easier to stretch a box of hamburger helper or that dollar soda or juice.

this is all after the fact. a few generations ago maybe fruits and veggies would be choosen, but these people have adapted to doing without.

The problem is our taste buds have become so perverted. Sugar and salt is as addictive as crack.

The human diet should consist mostly of bitter foods(vegetables, grains, and legumes).

Rice and beans should be staples along with veggies. For about 25 dollars you can eat well for a week. The people who complain that whole food outlets are expensive are not telling the real story. Of course whole foods is expensive if you are buying prepared foods.

This is how cheap it really is to eat healthy. Post a $50 dollar a week budget here is one.

A bag of beans
A bag of rice
A box of cereal
A variety of veggies especially green leafy ones
A bag of potatos
A large onion
A bag of apples
A bag of oranges
A bag of pasta
Milk(cow, soy, almond, or coconut)
Bread
Cheese(optional)
Nuts

This ^^^ can be done for about $50 or less per week, maybe about $35 if you are really savy. The problem is that we depend on the microwave and do not care to plan and prepare our own meals.

Also those with babies don't feed them junk from when they are born. Feed them only healthy food while they develop and you will give them the gift of naturally eating healthy for life. Stop giving your babies HFC filled bevarges, chips, cookies, cakes, and hard candies. If it is not in the home when they are babies they won't miss it. You can tell fat kids were once babies who cried alot and did not stop until soda and cookies got shoved in their mouths to stop crying.

Sadly. People wwould rather eat multitudes of junk, than smaller healthier options. You get what you pay for.

Man that is just

Where the meat at?

4 wings and fries. The official chinese food hood special... U got $3 bucks you good

I was sitting in the parking lot of 7-11 the other day

watching these elementary school aged kids

You would be amazed at how many of these youngans live off chips and sodas.

The $2.00 hood meal

Shit is sad

I see it on the train every day.

Young parent gives her child in the stroller a bag of chips and sips of soda for breakfast.

across further down the car, a young teenage girl eating chips and a soda for breakfast.

:smh:

when you can get 3 apples for a dollar and refill a water bottle for free

Sadly. People wwould rather eat multitudes of junk, than smaller healthier options. You get what you pay for.

When you broke there are not many options. If you only got 30 dollars to stretch out then spending money on fruit and veggies which can be 2 dollars a pound or more is expensive.

The issue is not eating healthy it is trying to stretch a dollar. Poor people in general work more physically demanding jobs.

Healthy food cost alot of money. It is easier to stretch a box of hamburger helper or that dollar soda or juice.

that is a bunch of bullshit bruh you can get healthy foods on sale just like you can get snack foods on sale. a bag of cheetoes cost you three bucks for the family size a bag of carrots cost 79 cents. you can glaze those carrots up and those things will taste better than candy. If you know how to shop you can stretch your dollar and get some great healthy choices.

btw if you have to buy cheetoes and other stuff why not buy the baked option.

True....but there are also a lot of poor folks who don't work at all, spend what money/subsidies they get on bullshit, yet eat like shit and put a strain on the healthcare system.

Generally poor people work more physically demanding jobs. No one is coming home after working 12 hours in a warehouse, or some hard manual labor like lifting boxes or sweating in a field just to eat a bag of carrots:hmm:

much less when comparing brands (some no frills are the exact same ingredients as the name brands, some) plus coupons..

i see people buy sale items at the supermarket. they go there for years and yet never learn that they sale price is for the supermarket card holders, so the person brings the food to the register, pays full price and thinks they bought on sale. :smh: get the card get the discount, check the reciept.

healthier food can be expensive, but usually when you start to buy healthy and when you don't compare prices and check your receipts. also shopping is expensive cause people try to buy healthy food AND junk food :smh:

I also save on money by not buying jarred pasta sauce. I buy canned whole tomatoes, drain the water add tomato paste for thickness, coat the sauce pan with olive oil (or any other healthy oil) make a vegetable blend (sofrito style) maybe some sugar and slow cook.. vioalla a healthy pasta sauce for your whole wheat pasta (you can add balsamic vinegar to the end of the cooking process of the sauce for added flavor) (for meat sauces you can also replace the ground beef for ground turkey)

large family? if you can drive to the club and pay to get in, you can join costco etc and join their club. sitting at my desk at work is a nice costco bought 22 pack of quaker instant oatmeal, not as good as the style you cook at home or irish steel cut oats, but healthy and cheap none the less.

i've pretty much removed salt and sugar from my eating habits.

you know those poor people have no frills options like i mentioned above. they don't need cheerios, they can get a cheap bag cereal option which when compared to side by side can be even healthier than the name brands depending on the actual cereal.

and if your poor, get your kids into good eating habits early. dont give your child soda, give them water.

I gotta go uptown to eat healthy not much on the sowfside.:smh:

Whole foods

Soul vegetarian.

Ritas

Well they have a few Tropicana Jamaican eateries
on this side now.

Vegetable rotis are my shit:yes:

They have a Harris Teeter on Capital Hill
thats the next best thing to whole foods
believe it or not.

hey bruh if you read all your responses you have listed nothing but excuses when we start to drop the excuses for why we can live a healthier lifestyle that is when we will begin to live one.

it is better to do it by choice than to have a doctor tell you by force.

Where I live we have a affordable farmers market veggies fruits breads etc. all type of access to the place. But the hours is 8 to 12 but I forgot if you went out drinkin the night before your lazy ass wont wake up. And these so called folks that say they cant afford veggies and fruits always got that cig hanging from their lips.

that is the shittiest answer one can give.

i work hard, then go to the gym and get home tired. if its too late to eat dinner i'll have a small bowl of cereal, or a protein bar and water/shake, a bowl of vegetables and maybe some tuna or grilled chicken.

I am right now staring at an apple that i will save for later cause i brought my own lunch into work and don't want to ruin my lunch appetite.

drinking more water can also cut back on hunger, which means eating less which is healthier and cheaper than putting a full plate of food down cause your hungrier than you think.

when your hungry your blood sugar goes up so you get hungry and binge, problem is it takes a while for your body to digest and recognize that it has received nutrition so people keep eating even though they've had their fill, causing obesity and expanding the stomach and getting into habits of large meals.

dont give your kid chocolate as a treat, cut up an orange, pineapple, an apple, buy some beef jerky etc.. so many options..

people don't eat healthy and don't want to, mind you i get it, i have gone back and forth with my eating habits and my weight but i do recognize that what has held me back is not prices it's what people think is "Cool" to eat..

for almost all situations, find the problem in the room, if you can't find it its you.

why would eating carrots and such after a hard days work be a bad thing? what kind of thinking is that? its just a fucking carrot, don't like carrots? eat an apple, a bowl of lettuce and cucumbers, add some tuna or chicken. steam the carrots, get a good dipping sauce...

skip the chicken parm and make a grilled chicken wrap..

I've seen people live off of chinese food and mcdonalds and don't know what a good home cooked meal is like. :smh: sad shit when you see how big those families are getting from bad eating habits.

Saying that good food cost money is a crock of bullshit, because I know plenty of West Indians who don't make that much money, but work long hours but still manage to cook and place a nice healthy meal on the table for themselves and kids.

 Plantains and root veggies (yuca, yautia, bianda) are cheap and delicious.

believe it or not, fresh veggies cost more. Ever bought an apple at Exxon? costs more than a giant bag of doritos. I paid $1.30 for a tomato the other day. :smh:

And did you pull her to the side and educate her? Offer any assistance on how to properly change her and her family's diet?

You could've if you didn't.

quoted for truth

oh and people that eat healthy can eat anything. healthy folk don't need to watch what they eat.

eat like a pig today or eat something that you normally don't eat? no problem, eat right for the rest of the week or work out extra hard tomorrow..

it's funny watching the healthy folk eat a pizza or something like that and the fat people trying to loose weight are crying eating their veggies

chinese food, mcdonalds etc are supposed to be for treats, nights when you are too tired to cook etc.. or if your somewhere where the choices are limited, like when your out shopping far away like out an outlet or something.

a friend of mine was just cursing out her mother, well not cursing but she was pissed off. her daughters are 8 years old, and their grandparents introduced the grandchildren to soda. 8 years without soda and now they crave it after a week at grandparents house, cause the grandparents thought it was cruel to deny the children soda. :smh:

I was gonna type a long ass reply but I ain't got time. All I'm saying is that it's bullshit if you act as if the healthier option is more expensive. Give me a fucking break. I came from humble beginnings yet I wasn't fed on a diet of junk. People using the excuse that people work long hours so they can't cook is BS. I work long hours too, but the key is preparing and preserving. Cook fresh food on the weekend, preserve it in the fridge or freezer and that shit can last you a week.

Again, it just comes down to laziness/convenience and a lack of knowledge. Whichever way you wanna look at it.

You ask most females today if they can cook and they'll look at you like you just spat in their face. :smh:

believe it or not, fresh veggies cost more. Ever bought an apple at Exxon? costs more than a giant bag of doritos. I paid $1.30 for a tomato the other day. :smh:

I've found that its all about location.

local supermarkets like ctown/associated/metfood in the hood has horrible veggie selections for high prices, upper middle class neighborhoods and other superkmarkets like stop and shop etc not only have fresh vegetables at better prices but you can also find different choices of meats like 90% lean etc as opposed to the supermakets in the hood that have just the same old meat full of fat.

shop elsewhere, cut coupons, hunt for sales even if it means driving out further, check vegetable stands, there are usually small market fairs in some communities where you can get all you need for cheaper than at the market.

it can be more expensive, i'm not saying that isn't the case in some instances but the same can be said about other things in our lives. I'd rather pay for quality than pay for shit.

it does suck but the good stuff does sometimes cost, you could buy a cheap pair of sneakers or a good pair for more money, if your running the more expensive ones really are your only choice, but they last, just like food, it may be more expensive but its healthier.

if your throwing money at clubs, hoes, rims, sneakers but wont spend on healthy eating.. you have bigger problems than just price of food.

Thank you. It's a crock of shit excuse.

It's where you buy it. I'll be damned if I buy 'fresh' ingredients from a supermarket or store.

And did you pull her to the side and educate her? Offer any assistance on how to properly change her and her family's diet?

You could've if you didn't.
I don't know why I'm bothering replying but you do that to most parents and they'll tell you to spin on their middle finger. You're telling me if someone pulled you to the side and told you what to feed your kids, you'll take it as friendly advice?

Don't answer that actually. I know you'll be on that BS.

This is really a waste of a topic.

What is discussing this shit going to do? Some people CAN do better, but don't care to. Trying to create some dietary Utopia in a country of excess is laughable, at best.

Eat. Drink. Fuck. Die. Make Room For The Next.

WOW 8Supremo...I've read tons of cynical comments here in BGOL land, but this had to be the first to make me respond to it directly. I have to admit in the past my wife and I were guilty of buying largely "fast and convenient" foods for our kids to eat when we went shopping. You know, the kind that they could just toss in the microwave after school or when friends were over? The wake up call came last year as we were taking physicals as part of the foster care program approval process. My Dr. mentioned that I was getting close to needing my cholesterol treated and HBP too. He sent us to a nutritionist who didn't pull any punches (smart sista who knows her shit) and lit into us for trying to eat ourselves into an early grave. And all of this is with me being right around the military approved BMI for my height (5"8, 195). I'm learning now that fitness alone is not enough...from listening to her and hell a lot of current information I got here from you guys. Wifey and I bypass Whole Foods (aint taking out a loan to go shopping) and hit 2 local farmer's markets on the regular. Instead of junk? Bowls of fruit sit on the table from them to grab when they want a snack. Yeah we will still do Fast Food on occasion as a treat or if we are out shoe shopping or something like that. 6 outta 7 days? We take turns cooking. I've decided to be 40 and FAN damn TABULOUS. Can't really do that from an early grave. I don't go around standing on a soap box about it, but I do share what I'm learning with my friends and family when I get the "Oh, you look so good to be 40" comments

YOu also don't have to eat like some nutrition junky, just be conscious of what you put in your body.

drink more water, you'll be full most of the time and you'll eat less, eating less means preparing less which means saving more. maybe food is expensive to some of you cause of the portion sizes yall are preparing for yourselves.

For those that work long hours or live alone

I recommend this book

i would point yall to magazines and articles but with the internet as it is, just google healthy eating options, or cheap healthy options..

substitute your google searches, remove the porn search and enter a food option, you'll find it, check online printable coupons..
