CBS

Another popular actor who left a long-running CBS drama series is coming back as the lead of his own series. Shemar Moore, who departed Criminal Minds last springafter 11 seasons, has been tapped as the star of CBS drama pilot S.W.A.T., executive produced by The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, Neal H. Moritz, Justin Lin and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas. Moore also will serve as a producer on the project, inspired by the 2003 Sony movie that was based on the 1975 ABC series produced by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg.

Written by Thomas and directed by Lin, S.W.A.T. is described as an intense, action-packed procedural following a locally born and bred S.W.A.T. lieutenant, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson (Moore), torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he’s tasked to run a highly-trained unit that is the last stop for solving crimes in Los Angeles.

Moore’s Harrelson, exuding calmness but always ready for action, has all the ability to become a leader – he’s just not happy with the reason he just became one. The role was played by Samuel L. Jackson in the 2003 movie directed by Clark Johnson.

Thomas is executive producing the pilot alongside Ryan and Marney Hochman of MiddKid Prods, Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Films, and Lin and Danielle Woodrow of Perfect Storm Entertainment. Sony Pictures TV co-produces with CBS TV Studios.

CBS last season recently tapped departing NCIS veteran Michael Weatherly as the lead of drama pilot Bull, which went to series. This season, The Good Wife alum Alan Cumming leads CBS’ drama pilot Instinct.

Moore is repped by attorney Stephen Breimer at Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal Laviolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman.

The “S.W.A.T.” reboot at CBS is heating up.

The pilot that already has A-list talent behind the camera has just cast Bond girl Stephanie Sigmanin a starring role, Variety has learned exclusively.

Sigman is the first cast member to sign onto the reboot, which is based on the movie of the same name. The pilot follows a locally born and bred S.W.A.T. lieutenant who is torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he’s tasked to run a highly-trained unit that’s the last stop for solving crimes in Los Angeles. Sources say CBS is nearing a deal with an actor for the lead lieutenant role.

Sigman will play Jessica, who’s described as ambitious and fastidious, and has earned her high rank at S.W.A.T. headquarters.

The “S.W.A.T.” pilot was written by Aaron Thomas and will be directed by Justin Lin. Both will serve as executive producers, along with Shawn Ryan, Marney Hochman, Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, and Danielle Woodrow. Sony Pictures Television and CBS Television Studios are behind the hourlong drama.

The series is based on the 2003 film, which starred Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, LL Cool J, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jeremy Renner. That movie was based on the 1970s series, produced by Aaron Spelling, which ran for two seasons on ABC.

“S.W.A.T.” is the latest project for Sigman, who’s been high in demand ever since her scene-stealing role in the 2015 Daniel Craig movie “Spectre.” She also starred in the first season of Netflix’s “Narcos,” and appeared in a few episodes of ABC’s anthology series “American Crime” from John Ridley. This is the second consecutive pilot season that Sigman has been cast in a lead role, following Ridley’s ABC detective drama, “Presence,” which ultimately was not greenlit to series. Up next for the actress is the sequel to the hit horror movie “Annabelle 2.”

Sigman is repped by ICM, Management 360, and Morris Yorn.

CBS has picked up a pilot for “S.W.A.T.,” a drama based on the film, which was inspired by the 1975 TV series of the same name, Variety has learned.

The series follows a locally born and bred S.W.A.T. lieutenant who is torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he’s tasked to run a highly-trained unit that is the last stop for solving crimes in Los Angeles.

Aaron Thomas wrote the pilot, and will serve as executive producer, along with Shawn Ryan, Marney Hochman, Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Danielle Woodrow and Justin Lin, who will direct the pilot. The hot project hails from Sony Pictures Television and CBS Television Studios.

The original “S.W.A.T.” series, produced by Aaron Spelling, ran for two seasons on ABC in the mid ’70s. The 2003 movie, based on the TV show, starred Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, LL Cool J, Michelle Rodriguez and Jeremy Renner.

“S.W.A.T.” is one of a few TV reboots this season, as the revival trend is down this year from pilot seasons in recent years. Other reboots in contention for 2017-2018 include “Dynasty” at the CW, “What About Barb?” at NBC and “Behind Enemy Lines” at Fox.

Man you’d think as long as he’s been acting he’s bow out gracefully. Shit 6 seasons is enough for syndication! Move on dude!

Season 7 coming

Why when he's the star of a show who saw its ratings go up this season. It's one thing to get cancelled when things are on the decline and completely differently when they're going up. And the show is already in syndication. Besides if you've been on a show that long you'd probably want a proper sendoff where the show can have a legit series finale as opposed to what they're getting.

It got uncancelled.....

CBS Saves S.W.A.T. From Cancelation for Final Season

UPDATE: It's official: S.W.A.T. will return for a seventh and final season at CBS.

"We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for S.W.A.T. and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year," CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope said in a joint statement. "S.W.A.T. has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show's storylines and characters, which audiences deserve. Once again, we appreciate the talents and efforts of the cast, writers, producers and crew and everyone who has contributed to the success of S.W.A.T. We look forward to its return next season."

S.W.A.T.
saved? Just days after CBS canceled the hit crime drama after six seasons, the CBS Studios and Sony Pictures Television co-production is in talks to return for a seventh season. On Monday, Deadline reported that network CBS and lead studio Sony Pictures TV could reach a decision to renew the series for a 13-episode S.W.A.T. season 7 by the end of the day. According to Deadline, it was a financial dispute — not ratings — that canceled S.W.A.T., which averaged nearly seven million viewers over last season. As executive producer Shawn Ryan told The Hollywood Reporter in March: "There's no reason why the show shouldn't be picked up other than the economics of the business are changing. CBS and Sony will or will not figure out a way to economically make a season seven work."

That could change as CBS and Sony return to the table to effectively un-cancel S.W.A.T., should the financials make sense for both sides. According to Deadline, talks continued over the weekend amid swift backlash from fans and public push back from star Shemar Moore, who has led all six seasons as LAPD Sgt. Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson. Should CBS and Sony save S.W.A.T. at the eleventh hour, the renewal would come before the network reveals its fall schedule on Wednesday, May 10th.

Following news of the show's cancellation, Deadline reported that CBS and Sony failed to reach a financial agreement: "[S.W.A.T.'s] early renewals the last few years came with CBS keeping the license fee unchanged, which has put more and more pressure on the budget and further squeezed the show's profit margins as costs increase every year ... Sony is not willing to go for another renewal at a flat license fee [the amount of money a network pays to a studio for its programming] as that would compromise the show's production quality and financial model."

Ultimately, after CBS let its exclusive window on S.W.A.T. lapse, the network agreed to increase the license fee in exchange for a shortened 13-episode season, which reportedly would have "pushed up the per-episode budget even higher and further hurt the show's economics."
In a video posted to Instagram on Saturday, Moore reacted to CBS' decision to cancel "the most diverse show" on the network.

"For CBS, last two years we've been killing it… We've done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for," Moore said. "When I got hired to be Hondo on S.W.A.T., was getting a lot of flak for lack of diversity. If I post this, and I think I might, I will get in a lot of trouble with CBS because I'm calling them out. Because they've been wonderful to me for 26 out of my 29-year career. But to abruptly get told that you're canceled when you led us to believe last week — and the week before, and the week before that — that we would have some semblance of a season seven to at least say goodbye, if not continue. And to abruptly be told, 'You're done.'"

Moore continued, "I understand it's not personal, it's business, but I still have faith that S.W.A.T. will live to see another day." He then encouraged his 4.2 million followers to "make some f—ing noise and let them know that canceling S.W.A.T. is a f—ing mistake."
