TV Discussion: Superman & Lois (CW & HBO MAX) CANCELED! ARROWVERSE IS DONE!

I would not be surprised if his ass is actually in rehab for drug addiction.

I had looked him up and this show is his first breakout role.

He probably got bombarded with what little fame he got from the role and got caught up in the Hollyweird life.

It happens to a lot of young stars coming into the game.

Meet your new Jonathan Kent.

EW has learned that Michael Bishop has been cast as Jonathan Kent on Superman & Lois. The Australian actor is joining the CW's superhero drama in season 3, taking over the role previously played by Jordan Elsass.

Bishop made his American film debut as the lead in the Disney Channel Original Movie Spin last year. He's best known for his work in Australian TV and films including Grace Beside Me and Swinging Safari, as well as short films Shelter, Skin Like Bark, Detention, Pet Rock, Hunter and Gatherer, and Indiana.

Last month it was announced that Elsass, who has played one of Clark Kent's (Tyler Hoechlin) teen sons since the series premiere, is exiting the show after two seasons and that his role would be recast. "Jordan Elsass has notified the Studio that he will not be returning to Superman & Lois for season 3 due to personal reasons," Warner Bros. TV said in a statement. According to sources close to the situation, Elsass' exit was the result of a private matter and not a workplace-related issue.

EW recently spoke with Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing about his plans to bring Jonathan Kent more into the central focus in season 3.

"We certainly want to fold Jonathan more into the superhero stories," Helbing previously said. "What Clark says to him about the Kryptonian tech, you could take that in many different ways, so we'll see which road we ultimately go down. I have four brothers, and everybody on our staff has sort of similar experiences, so it's fun to play that [brother] dynamic. Sometimes siblings are best friends, sometimes they're at odds, but for the most part what we love about Jordan and Jonathan is that they have each other's back and that they're not jealous of each other. We'll continue to have that dynamic for sure in the show."

Superman And Lois Season 3 Has Cast Its Villain, And It's An Arrow Alum

And they're playing a major character.

The CW’s Superman & Lois is finally in production on its third season, which is sure to excite fans of the Arrowverse-adjacent series. We’ve already seen a massive behind-the-scenes change for the show, with the exit of one of its lead stars (with their role recently recast). Now, the show has brought in an actor to play a new character to the series entirely. S&L has officially cast its villain for Season 3, and it’s tapped an Arrow alum for the job.

Chad L. Coleman has officially joined the cast of Superman & Lois as the villainous Bruno Manheim, according to TVLine. The actor is arguably best known to superhero fans for his role as Arrow’s Tobias Church, a role that he played for four episodes during the fifth season of the series. Coleman has been in more galactic surroundings as of late, since he’s currently playing the role of Klyden on The Orville (which is streamable with a Hulu subscription). His credits also include The Walking Dead, The Expanse, All American and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The actor is an intriguing pick for Bruno Manheim, who was briefly mentioned by John Diggle during the final moments of S&L’s Season 2 finale. Based on the description of Manheim, this iteration of the classic Superman villain will pretty much fall in line with his characterization in the comics. The baddie is described as “a local hero” in the city of Metropolis and has “revived the struggling neighborhoods of the city.” Despite that, Lois Lane has apparently been working for years to prove that he’s the leader of the criminal organization Intergang.

It’s good to finally have confirmation that Manheim will indeed be involved in this latest stretch of the acclaimed series. But one can’t help but wonder if he’ll be the only big bad that the show has to offer during the third season. Season 2 featured two antagonists in Ally Alston and Bizzaro, though the latter proved to be more of an antihero by the time of his shocking death. Superman & Lois has been known to deliver a villain switcheroo or two, so I’m curious as to how they proceed this time around.

As previously referenced one of the other big stories regarding Season 3 is the departure of Jordan Elsass, who played the role of Jonathan Kent. The star explained that he’d opted to leave the show in order to focus on his mental health. This time last week, it was reported that Elsass would be replaced in the role by Australian actor Michael Bishop.

Changes like cast additions and exits can cause uncertainty, but Superman & Lois’ producers have given fans few reasons to doubt their work. In terms of Chad L. Coleman’s casting as Bruno Manheim, I’m excited to see what he does in the role. The Arrow alum has proven himself to be a talented actor and can certainly hold his own alongside the show’s other talented stars.

A release window hasn’t been confirmed for Superman & Lois Season 3 just yet but, while you wait, check out the first two seasons using an HBO Max subscription. Also, take a look at CinemaBlend’s 2022 TV schedule for info on shows that are premiering in the near future.

Superman & Lois is Already Positioned to Handle a Potential Cancelation

With The CW axing superhero content, if Superman & Lois is set to be canceled as well, the DCTV show already has the foundation for the right ending.

BY RENALDO MATADEEN

One of the most disappointing aspects of The CW of late is the number of superhero shows that got canceled. The Flash will end with Season 9, while the likes of Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow got axed in an unceremonious fashion, filled with unresolved threads. Sadly, after a month or so of rumors, it's now been confirmed Stargirl will end too.

The Stargirl news comes in the wake of the network streamlining its collection of scripted originals, following its acquisition by Nexstar Media Group. As such, many are now anticipating Superman & Lois could be next on the chopping block, heightened by Warner Bros. Discovery looking at another Man of Steel movie with Henry Cavill. As heartbreaking as it'll be, however, the series is well-equipped to deal with this and end on a proper note of closure.

In Superman & Lois, the Kents are united and charting a path forward in Smallville. While a new Jon Kent will enter the fray in Season 3, he, Jordan, Clark and Lois concluded Season 2 by stopping Parasite, and saving their planet from a dark merging with the Bizarro World. In the wake, Clark's marriage is stable, Jordan's getting better as Superboy and Jon has stopped using performance-enhancement drugs. Lois is using the Smallville Gazette with Chrissy to protect Kal-El's identity and change the world as she did with the Daily Planet.

The Kents even made amends with Tal-Rho after the New Krypton arc and rebuilt the Fortress of Solitude. Thus, the Kents just have to ride out the Intergang wave and viewers can easily fill in the blanks about Jordan succeeding his dad down the line. In addition, the Kents aren't hiding the truth about Clark and Jordan's powers from Lana's family, so they're all as close as ever, positioning Jordan and Sarah to have a solid romance. The show even has the option of having Kyle and Lana reunite, or for Kyle to accept after his cheating, he can only be there as a dad, not a husband. This would add drama to the finale, reminding fans not everything is ideal. Still, painting a civil, domestic picture moving forward with Lana and Clark there for each other.

Many fans would expect, at some point, big villains like Doomsday, Darkseid, Brainiac, Lobo or Mongol to enter the fray. However, these villains have been done so many times in cartoons, comics and animated movies, Intergang feels like the right enemy to end on -- more so now that Lex Luthor is on Titans. With their alien technology, Intergang can push Clark to his limits across the world, providing room for John Diggle to unlock his Green Lantern potential. There's even room for John Henry Irons and Natalie to rock their Steel suits, reinforcing themselves as the third family of Smallville.

This story direction caps the portrait study of John and Clark as fathers, which is what the series hinged on in the first place. Seeing as the show was so confined, there's no need to venture to Apokolips or any other cosmic threat, as the grounded and simple approach has always worked. Notably, John took over as the lone savior for a while when Clark was de-powered due to Parasite. The responsibility arc for the former and the humanity arc for the latter have been covered. This allows an Intergang rivalry to give its own spin on the World's Finest with the heroes finally at full strength.

Ultimately, if the show does get canceled, it'll hurt. Yet, the way it comes off like a spiritual successor to the Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh Superman films, all boxes have been ticked already in terms of fan service. More so, it has redefined Tyler Hoechlin as a Man of Steel for a new generation. One more season spent reiterating how Earth is truly home for all the families involved feels like it's well and truly the right way to sign off.

I doubt theyll go forward w/ that JusticeU spinoff show featuring Diggle...Gotham Knights might bite the dust after its first season

Too bad S & L wont be used as a launching pad like Arrow was for The Flash..we'd finally see Batman,Wonder Woman,Green Lantern,Aquaman etc on television

Keep hope alive.

Warner Bros sold off the CW network and has put everything onto HBO MAX.

There might be a slight possibility they continue everything on HBO MAX, hopefully with the same actors.

Similar to what Disney is doing with the Netflix Marvel shows.

Superman & Lois Could Have a Place in James Gunn's DCU Plan

James Gunn and Peter Safran's plan for the DC Universe looks like it could be big enough to accommodate Superman & Lois well beyond Season 3.

MICHEL BIGELOW
PUBLISHED 3 DAYS AGO

James Gunn recently confirmed, via Twitter, that while the connected DC Universe for which he and partner Peter Safran are currently creating a ten-year plan will span film, TV, animation and games, standalone DC projects will also continue in some capacity. Previous announcements have made clear that these include the upcoming sequels to both Joker and The Batman. Less clear is what any of this might mean for The CW's last DC holdout, Superman & Lois.

Currently shooting its third season, Superman & Lois is popular with critics and fans alike, but events over the last year — including Nexstar's purchase of The CW, Henry Cavill's return as the DCU's big screen Superman, and the cancelation of the rest of The CW's DC output — don’t bode well for the series' long-term prospects. On the other hand, Justice U's continued development and Gotham Knights' series order suggest that the network isn't quite done with DC. This opens the door for Superman & Lois to continue as another standalone project or as part of the multiversal tapestry that could make up Gunn's new DCU.

Superman & Lois Is Already DC TV's Best Standalone Property

Superman & Lois stands apart from most of The CW's other DC-based series. It uses a different visual style, its writing and acting are more naturalistic and, perhaps most importantly, it exists in a separate universe. The shows that took place in the Arrowverse, while great, are all tied together. Saving one means carrying on the baggage of a shared, complex continuity. Superman & Lois comes with no such burden.

Like The Batman, Superman & Lois doesn't need to spend time servicing a larger continuity. It has the freedom to drill down and explore the essence of the iconic characters at its core. For The Batman, this means highlighting The Dark Knight's pulp detective roots, and for Superman & Lois it means leaning into the Man of Steel's gentle compassion. This ability to focus on deft characterization and compelling storytelling rather than cross-promotion and contributing to an overarching metanarrative makes Superman & Lois a perfect fit for DC's limited stable of standalone projects.

An Overarching DCU Story Involving the Multiverse Could Include Superman & Lois

James Gunn and Peter Safran have also said that their ten-year plan for DC includes a single giant story that ties everything together. While they haven't given any hints as to what that story might be, it wouldn't be unreasonable to guess that they are building toward an adaptation of what is arguably the biggest story in DC Comics history: Crisis on Infinite Earths. If this is, indeed, the case, the newly renamed DCU may actually end up being a DCM, or DC Multiverse.

As the title would suggest, Crisis on Infinite Earths involved the myriad parallel universes that made up the DC Comics multiverse. A successful film adaptation of that story would, therefore, requires DC Studios to first establish its own version of this concept. If the DCU remains focused on a single universe, audiences are unlikely to care about any of the other worlds a movie version of the Anti-Monitor might threaten. Conversely, a multiverse comprising already beloved properties comes with built-in fans, creates real stakes and gives DC the opportunity to top Marvel's massive Infinity Saga.

Parallel Earths have been part of Superman & Lois from the beginning. John Henry and Natalie Irons come from a world that appears to have died during the Arrowverse's "Crisis on Infinite Earths," and Bizarro World was a primary focus of Season 2. It wouldn't be a stretch to position all of those worlds within the context of the bigger DC Multiverse. If Tyler Hoechlin, Brandon Routh and Tom Welling can coexist as different versions of Superman in a single episode of television, there’s no reason Tyler Hoechlin and Henry Cavill can't do the same across a ten-year epic.

Beyond Season 3, the future of Superman & Lois is very much in the air, but the beauty of James Gunn and Peter Safran's plan, so far as they've revealed it, is its flexibility. It gives fans both shared continuity and standalone stories, either of which could play to the many strengths of Superman & Lois. The only question now is whether The CW's new owners will realize this in time.

Superman & Lois Can Make the Man of Steel's Injustice Arc More Heartbreaking

Season 3 of Superman & Lois may remix Injustice with an evil Man of Steel, but this time there'd be extra layers of anguish after a personal death.

RENALDO MATADEEN
PUBLISHED 7 HOURS AGO

With the trailer for Season 3 of Superman & Lois out, fans are eager to see how the Kents handle the threats to come. Bruno Mannheim and Intergang are poised to cause trouble in Metropolis, and rumors are swirling that Lex Luthor will be arriving. It ups the ante, giving a more classical Man of Steel storyline as opposed to last season, with Tal-Rho being redeemed and Parasite trying to merge two Earths.

Interestingly, fans are positing a major tragedy will occur, possibly breaking Superman. They believe Kal-El might go on a brutal spree a la Injustice, which would flip the script on its head as loyalists mostly associate Tyler Hoechlin's Clark as a face, not a heel. If this does happen, though, Superman & Lois can make the sinister turn much more tragic than what happened in the Injustice realm.

The trailer teases the Daily Planet collapsing and killing Lois, as well as her unborn baby. It nods to when Joker arranged to have Lois and her unborn child die in Injustice, which caused Kal to go berserk. He murdered heroes and villains alike in his quest for justice, starting with him punching through Joker. Superman eventually started an oppressive regime, but a rebellion arose. This was led by Batman, who hoped to get the Justice League traitors back on the side of the light.

If this heartbreaking death does occur on Superman & Lois, it's easy to see Superman losing control, especially as he values Lois so much. The trailer hints at it with the way he and Sam Lane argue, plus the concept of losing a child would make Kal a sympathetic father as he alienates his inner circle in the name of retribution. It'd play into the evil Superman on Steel's world, but giving this Kal a more compassionate purpose as the husband's soul erodes over what would be a mammoth loss.

Superman & Lois Can Have a More Personal Rebellion

While Injustice made it personal with Superman's close colleagues coming after him, there wasn't a Lois there to chide him. This show, though, can use the Super Sons to heal their dad. Still, it's easy to see a stubborn Kal breaking rules, and Jordan, who's manifested powers and trained under Sam, coming after him. The trailer even shows Kal in a Kryptonite-infused machine, leaving some wondering if he's captured and being de-powered. In addition, Jon might get a suit from Nat and Steel, who'd be armored up to get to Kal before the military does and before Superman truly tarnishes his image.

John Henry does cut a Batman-like figure on this series and has the tech to kill Kal. Sadly, this brawl can end with Steel dying, which would test a shattered Nat and cause a civil war with the twin sons over Kal's redemption. This messes with the extended family, shaking the series up in terms of compassion and empathy, leaving fans feeling for a man who lost his wife and child. It'd definitely be a dark Man of Steel that fractures the concept of ideals and moral compasses. If this is Superman & Lois' final season, it would end on an emotional bang with Superman at his most vulnerable and facing opponents who know him best.

Superman And Lois Season 3 Has Cast Its Villain, And It's An Arrow Alum

And they're playing a major character.

‘Superman & Lois‘ Has ’One or Two More Seasons Left,’ New DC Studios Heads Say

By Joe Otterson
January 31, 2023 9:00am PT

“Superman & Lois” is expected to continue for “one to two more seasons” according to DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The future of the CW series was revealed by the pair at a press event on the Warner Bros. lot on Jan. 30. at which they laid out their initial development slate. When asked about “Superman & Lois,” Gunn said, “It’s a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit.”

Gunn and Safran were also asked about the fate of the upcoming CW series “Gotham Knights,” though neither had any comment. That show will debut its first season on March 14.

“Superman & Lois” will debut its third season on March 14 as well. The series stars Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch in the title roles, with Michael Bishop and Alex Garfin playing their twin sons Jonathan and Jordan Kent respectively. Jordan Elsass had played Jonathan in Seasons 1 and 2. The show originally debuted in 2021.

“Superman & Lois” and “Gotham Knights” are the last remaining DC shows on The CW alongside “The Flash,” which is ending with its upcoming ninth season. In a perfect storm of circumstances, Gunn and Safran are looking to largely reboot the DC film and television brand while The CW is largely moving out of original scripted programming since Nexstar acquired a majority stake in the broadcast network.

The looming end of DC’s presence on The CW also marks a major shift for producer Greg Berlanti, who spearheaded the creation of The CW’s suite of superhero shows for the past decade beginning with “Arrow” in 2012. Berlanti has also been behind a number of DC shows at HBO Max, but Gunn and Safran stated during the press event that Berlanti’s “Green Lantern” show is no longer moving forward in any form at the streamer. Meanwhile “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” are ending after their fourth seasons, with Berlanti executive producing both shows. The only other announced DC show Berlanti has on his slate at present is “Dead Boy Detectives” at HBO Max, which is currently in production.

Just give it some closure! I hate the kids, but the seasons have been pretty good

Season 3
Official Trailer

I was gonna hold out and let a couple of episodes stack up, but temptation was eating me.

HaHa!!!:16:

Season started about a month after the the season finale events.

The season is basically starting new plotlines and introducing the bad guy.

Bruno Mannheim debuted with whatever deviousness he is up to. He has some weird partner with a head like a walnut working with him that has some type of mind powers.

The replacement for Johnathan actually did a good job. He even look the part with the role being he has dark hair like his parents and brother.

Gonna let a few episodes stack up before watching again

Season 3
Episodes 2 - 3

Watched these last night before bed.

Lois found out and revealed to everyone that she has stage 3 breast cancer that is aggressive.

All the characters in Smallville were shocked to hear the news. Clark told Gen. Lane that Kryptonian tech is not capable to save her.

Bruno Manheim called out Superman to his home and got right in his face telling him how he feels about him. All Clark could do was stand there looking stupid cuz he knew Bruno was 100% correct. It’s gonna be interesting to see how things play out between them.

Steel looks to have some interest in Lana. Her ex-husband ain’t having that Brotha going after his wife. HaHa!!!

Jordan has gotten more control of his powers. He can’t land on the ground from flying without stumbling which is funny to see. The actor who is the new Jonathan is getting better with his role and seems more believable than the actor who left.

Gonna let a few episodes stack up before watching again.

Season 3
Episodes 4 - 6

Finished these up this morning.

Lois starts up with her chemo reluctantly. It’s hitting Clark hard and he signs up to grief therapy after talking to other chemotherapy patients.

Mannheim meets up with John Henry and discuss the history of the original John Henry of this Earth. John Henry connects with his sister from this Earth.

General Hale hooked up Jordan with his own suit for when he is out using his powers to protect his identity.

We got a slight reboot scene from “Superman 2” with Clark in the diner that played out well. It was interesting on how it played out with Clark controlling himself.

Lana and her daughter are slowly getting back together after their incident.

Lois met up with Mannheim. He is doing a good job playing both sides with Clark/Lois getting them to think he is “The Good Guy”.

Kyle and Chrissy are Fucking like jackrabbits, still keeping their relationship a secret from Lana….somewhat.

We got a Easter Egg on the existence of Mechano-Man, Equus and Atomic Skull existing in this series.

Clark is gonna have to figure out how to defend himself from Green Kryptonite, being everybody knows his weakness and that shit seems to be in everyone’s possession to make weapons against him. Kryptonite doesn’t seem to affect Jordan the same way as his father. Jordan also seems to be more stronger than Clark Unknown at this time why this is.

Gonna let a few episodes stack up again.
