Superman & Lois is Already Positioned to Handle a Potential Cancelation
With The CW axing superhero content, if Superman & Lois is set to be canceled as well, the DCTV show already has the foundation for the right ending.

One of the most disappointing aspects of The CW of late is the number of superhero shows that got canceled. The Flash will end with Season 9, while the likes of Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow got axed in an unceremonious fashion, filled with unresolved threads. Sadly, after a month or so of rumors, it's now been confirmed Stargirl will end too.
The Stargirl news comes in the wake of the network streamlining its collection of scripted originals, following its acquisition by Nexstar Media Group. As such, many are now anticipating Superman & Lois could be next on the chopping block, heightened by Warner Bros. Discovery looking at another Man of Steel movie with Henry Cavill. As heartbreaking as it'll be, however, the series is well-equipped to deal with this and end on a proper note of closure.
In Superman & Lois, the Kents are united and charting a path forward in Smallville. While a new Jon Kent will enter the fray in Season 3, he, Jordan, Clark and Lois concluded Season 2 by stopping Parasite, and saving their planet from a dark merging with the Bizarro World. In the wake, Clark's marriage is stable, Jordan's getting better as Superboy and Jon has stopped using performance-enhancement drugs. Lois is using the Smallville Gazette with Chrissy to protect Kal-El's identity and change the world as she did with the Daily Planet.
The Kents even made amends with Tal-Rho after the New Krypton arc and rebuilt the Fortress of Solitude. Thus, the Kents just have to ride out the Intergang wave and viewers can easily fill in the blanks about Jordan succeeding his dad down the line. In addition, the Kents aren't hiding the truth about Clark and Jordan's powers from Lana's family, so they're all as close as ever, positioning Jordan and Sarah to have a solid romance. The show even has the option of having Kyle and Lana reunite, or for Kyle to accept after his cheating, he can only be there as a dad, not a husband. This would add drama to the finale, reminding fans not everything is ideal. Still, painting a civil, domestic picture moving forward with Lana and Clark there for each other.
Many fans would expect, at some point, big villains like Doomsday, Darkseid, Brainiac, Lobo or Mongol to enter the fray. However, these villains have been done so many times in cartoons, comics and animated movies, Intergang feels like the right enemy to end on -- more so now that Lex Luthor is on Titans. With their alien technology, Intergang can push Clark to his limits across the world, providing room for John Diggle to unlock his Green Lantern potential. There's even room for John Henry Irons and Natalie to rock their Steel suits, reinforcing themselves as the third family of Smallville.
This story direction caps the portrait study of John and Clark as fathers, which is what the series hinged on in the first place. Seeing as the show was so confined, there's no need to venture to Apokolips or any other cosmic threat, as the grounded and simple approach has always worked. Notably, John took over as the lone savior for a while when Clark was de-powered due to Parasite. The responsibility arc for the former and the humanity arc for the latter have been covered. This allows an Intergang rivalry to give its own spin on the World's Finest with the heroes finally at full strength.
Ultimately, if the show does get canceled, it'll hurt. Yet, the way it comes off like a spiritual successor to the Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh Superman films, all boxes have been ticked already in terms of fan service. More so, it has redefined Tyler Hoechlin as a Man of Steel for a new generation. One more season spent reiterating how Earth is truly home for all the families involved feels like it's well and truly the right way to sign off.
Superman & Lois Season 3 premieres on The CW in 2023.
