This Dude Is Supposed To Be Real Hip Hop?

See all u guys on here are not true hip hop fans!!!

I grew up from the beginning of this shit I loved every thing about this from Super rhymes to lil Bow Wow. I grew up in the Gangta life in the Brooklyn projects I was raised so i was easy to be influence to gangsta rap but at the same time I appreciated Tribe Called Quest De La Soul Common sense Jungle brother X Clan Brand Nubians Hammer etc.. its just what elements they brought to make Hip Hop grow! into what it is world wide I remember Hip hop just consisted in the hoods of NYC having fun at the block parties Now that Hip Hop have world domination we're spoiled and we dont know what to dod with this shit but destroy it Young niggas like Lupe its their duty to pay homage to the Tribe there is no Lupe if it wasn't for the Tribe! thats like the Tribe dissing africa Bambata yall young cats are disrespectful niggas fought on the front lines for years for Hip Hop so yall can be spoiled in this shit! So Lupe i dont feel u on this...And who ever said NY aint the Alpha and Omega of this u dont know the meaning of it NY is the ALPHA of Hip hOP AND NO ONE CAN KILL hIP hOP BUT NY!!!!

You should read the responses in the thread before you open with that kind of a statement...

Understood. You're absolutely right about how an artist can be questionable on the microphone but then produce a great album. Guru had some very iffy moments when rhyming but Gangstarr pt out consistently good material.

I don't really wish to debate NY with you either. I'm in Chicago and there is a very healthy hip hop scene here. In fact, in some aspects I've seen the golden age reflected. It's fun again.
Then there is the fact that NY artists don't necessarily equate to good music no matter who they are. Kool G Rap may be a lyrical beast but he did make the awful "Giancana Story," Rakim may be the most spoken about emcee who has ever lived but can he go toe to toe in today's hip hop?
When it comes down to it we all love hip hop and debating over what city or area is better is what's destroying hip hop.
Shit, I personally think some of the best hip hop is coming from the UK right now.
Go listen to Classic and tell me if you think Rakim can go toe to toe with today's hip hop.

matter of fact here it is.

I'm from the city where Hurricane Chris is from, so me arguing about cities would be pointless.

No surprise man. Lupe to be honest is a product of the "Anti-campaign". Lupe gets his popularity because he is the "Anti-" of whats trendy right now. That new song dumb it down...isnt really saying shit. Well my bad...The verses arent. The Hook actually delivers the best message. If you really LISTEN to the verses instead of just saying "oh he aint talking about guns and cars so its hot"..you'll realize that he's just rhyming words in circles.. Its just like when 50 blew, 50 wasnt saying the illest shit out by a mile but since he was the "Anti-Ja" it was hot. Because he wasnt singing and talking about bitches all the time..it was hot no matter what...Same thing with DMX he was spitting simple shit but since he was "Anti-Jiggy" when P.Diddy and Mase were running shit, it was hot..

Most people dont even know the shit he's talking about so they defend it with "you dont understand it"...man please dude is speaking english, last time I checked I read and comprehend that language on a college level. Its almost like when Jay made that line about Nas. "Just because you dont understand it doesnt mean that he's bright"... Lupe has his moments like I love that joint American Terrorist but people have dude with his head in his ass.. People associate things they dont understand with intelligence for some reason

Like cats really compare him to Talib...Talib would rhyme backwards circles around this dude. Anyways tho, as far as ATCQ shit I didnt grow up on them but I was very aware of the style of their music. Lupe is right Hammer was more popular. But to say nobody will fuck with with Q-Tip is dumb...

But to be honest you cant fault dude for feeling he has the audacity to say that... look who he chills with.

Pretty obvious that peoples individual opinion is their opinion and valid (to a degree). If you have an opinion, you personally, or an interpretation based on part of the facts or pieces of history how can your opinion truly be considered? You agree with a dude that is unable to give credit to the birth place of the art form you are defending... which tells me you have little idea how we've arrived at this place in creativity or how Hip Hop even began. Yeah, your aloud to have your own differing opinion but if the opinion differs bc those that disagree don't have all the information there's no room to defend them/ you / him or your differing opinion (bc it's based on pieces of a whole).

I see you didnt thoroughly read my post. You're assuming Im agreeing with Lupe's demeanor or actions, and I never said that. I said that his feelings aren't wrong, just different or very unpopular. No matter the case, I was agreeing to some points made by the person I quoted, not Lupe himself. I doubt that most of you have heard ALL of, or even want to hear every single album that people thought were Hip Hop classics. Thats what bothers me, people are always lynched for having a different opinion. Just because he failed to have an inkling of interest in listening to ATCQ (though it would've made sense to listen for preparation of his set) doesnt mean he (or I, for that fact) doesnt understand the creation or the creativity. There are so many more parts of important hip hop history as well.

so because this dude didn't listen to a certain record of a certain hiphop genre that he is now apart of he is deemed wack???

lemme tell you something: when i was 18 i met this dude that wante d me to take him under my wing and teaching the skill of mcing. I was rapping then... Dude didn't know who black moon was and i thought it was sacrilege, i would get mad at him for not knowing who pharoah monch was. I look back at it now and its bitch shit. STFU. The only problem i had w/ lupe was the fact he said he has no interest in listening to the album. Like why would you disrespect a group like that???

That's most people's problem with him too. The other kats are just hating just to be hating.

You make a good point

Lupe is highly influenced by Crucial Conflict and Nas among others. Lupe regards It Was Written as his favorite album and cites it as his primary source of inspiration.

Along with It Was Written, Lupe claims to have enjoyed music by 2Pac, Too $hort and Jay-Z in "Hurt Me Soul." He has also cited DANGERDOOM and The Teriyaki Boyz as his current favorites.

Dude was born the same year I was (1982). So I can see why/how he wasn't influenced by ATCQ. I heard of them cats but didn't bother to look into them.

But yeah, dude shoulda just said he slipped up, that's all.

I dont see how his age has anything to do with it considering NWA and Hammer were in their prime in the early 90's also.

You countered you original argument in your own post. It's not about Lupe being wack because he hasn't listened to "Midnight Marauders." It's not about Lupe being wack at all. It's about the fact that he won't recognize a great hip hop group for what they were and what they contributed.
If it wasn't for A Tribe Called Quest the sub genre Lupe's a part of today (call it "backpack" if you will) may not even exist.
It's Lupe's ignorance in fucking up the lines to a classic Tribe song and then claiming it doesn't matter because he doesn't really like listening to Tribe anyway.

First of All, I grew up on every type of music. whether it was down south (im from florida) or it was West coast or east coast. But honestly ya'll, I find that hard to believe that some of ya'll never heard of ATCQ? In My Opinion and this is my opinion, they (ATCQ) are up there as far as greatest groups. Outkast, Run DMC, EPMD, UGK, etc. And as far as Lupe's concern, what a straight bitch. how did he accept a request and did not know any history of this group. now this is a big problem in hip hop. these dudes are making records and have no clue of what these groups before them laid down...it's a damn shame and they need they ass whooped for it... :smh::smh::smh::smh::smh:

i was born in 82, i remember every tribe album that came out...............i was young but i remember every one......i had older cousins, uncles and people of that nature who put me on to them.....i feel sorry for ya'll, because just like straight outta compton and albums like that, they had great albums as well....midnite marauders to me was one of the greatest hip hop albums ever...

(To steal a line from Funk Flex...) BE CLEAR. Lupe's not in hip-hop hot water because he wasn't hip to ATCQ. It's his arrogance that has peeps hating on him. I could care less that he didn't grow up listening to ATCQ. I could care less that he doesn't want to listen to them now. But to take such an arrogant and big-headed stance is ridiculous!

First, instead of Lupe just saying, "Look...I fucked up. I wish I hadn't, but I did..so my bad..." and just keep it moving, the dude goes on a defensive tirade and then caps it off by promoting his next album. Bad move.

Second, he lies and says Q-Tip came looking for him to do the tribute. As if to say he was doing them a favor by showing up to do it. This dude can't be serious.

Then to top all off, dudes says publicly that he still wont go back and listen to the MM album, which is his right. But after all this, to say that publicly is not only ludicrous, it's the ultimate form of disrespect to ATCQ.

So, even though he never thought much of ATCQ, he still accepted a gig to praise them. Then instead of just saying he fucked up and letting it go, he tries to justify why he wasn't a fan and didn't listen to the music. THEN says he won't even bother to go back and have a listen. That's some hoe ass shit, my people. That shit is disrespectful and arrogant beyond words.

And for those that didn't want to read all of that, here's Lupe's stance in a nutshell, just to show how fucked up he sounds:

"Yeah, I fucked up some lines during the tribute. So what? Shit happens. I didn't come looking for y'all. Y'all came looking for me. And by the way...I never listened to your music and I don't think enough of y'all to even go back and listen to your shit. Fuck you and everybody that likes you."

Naw, nigga. Fuck you.

]Common= a retarded overrated wimpy wanna be "deep" homo

Chicago needs to stick to house music. They ain't been right since "Smoking on haaaaaaaay in the middle of the baaaaaaaaaaarn"

Mufucka, what the fuck is your problem you bitch ass deaf, dumb and blind, inbred, impotent son of a fuck?:angry::angry:

Common is and has always been one of the greatest lyricist in hip hop since he dropped in '92. Common respects the game, those that came before him, and his contemporaries that are on some real shit. Common has led an entire career refusing to compromise his music for money which is why he has never had great album sales. This cat is a master of all the hip hop styles including storytelling, freestyling, AND battle rappin'. (see "the bitch in yoo" (Ice cube dis), which Common performed for the first time live in Cali, when Ice Cube still had credibility and could've had Common killed behind it.) You fuckin' idiot! You have obviously not listened to any of Common's albums circa 2000. Go fuckin' kill yourself you unintelligible bitch.

ok...i just peeped the video on youtube. before, i thought he missed the WHOLE PHIFE verse...now that i see it, he only mixed up a few words. he coulda easily covered his ass just by saying damn im sorry i slipped up. i am a huge lupe fan but he didnt have to go and trash ATCQ's contribution in hiphop. im still looking for the release of his "the cool" cd. hes an ill artist.

Like it or not HipHop started in NY. That's where it started, bottom line point blank period. Nobody's taking anything away from down south artists but it sounds to me like niggas is tryna rewrite the bible or some shit. Everyone is entitled to like who they like but STOP DENYING THE FACTS. "Christopher Columbus didn't discover America"!

No, he's an overrated rapper who says a lot of nothing that people are enamored with for no reason at all :smh:

He couldn't hold Phife or Tip's jock strap

And anyone in to hip hop, hip hop not that Solja Boy bullshit should feel offended.

Yeah he didn't have to say the shit he said, that was wrong.

this is a true example of what happens when u get cosigned by Jay-z.
u think ure just as big and important as he is. (ala Memphis Bleek)
the kid Lupe beats lil wayne as the most overrated rapper of this generation.

i saw dude when he first performed in vegas,
and his show was wack as shit.
the best thing about that show was the steak and egg breakfast i had afterwards.
he was irrelevent then,
and he's irrelevent now.

i think his flippant attitude has to do less with not caring about Tribe,
and more with realizing his "career" is coming to a devastating end.

wonder how those european promoters (who see ATCQ as gods) are gonna feel when Ms. Fiasco wants to go get some of that overseas paper?

oh geah,
he sucks as a skater too.

Isn't this kinda like some arrogant NBA rookie mothafucka saying he never watched Michael Jordon or Magic Johnson?

In other words he didnt study the game.

Floyd Mayweather said he was better than BOTH Sugar Rays

These young stupid muthafux:smh:

That's overrating Tribe isn't it??? The difference is that there is only 1 NBA and Magic and Mike were the stars in it. Tribe was never the biggest group in New York. P.E. was a hell of a lot bigger than them. Snoop, Dre, 2pac, Biggie, Nas, Puffy, Jay, DMX, 50, Ja Rule, and a ton of people after them all became bigger stars than them. Now, compare 2pac or Biggie or Jay with Jordan or Magic, because they are probably the two most famous guys to ever do what they do, but A Tribe Called Quest was most popular with those East Coast Elitists, White College Kids, and Back Packers.

There are a few things that bothered me as I read the original post and the comments that followed.

#1 Lupe (who is my favorite rapper as of now) loses lots of respect from me by his unwillingness to give ATCQ a listen. I mean, there were many artists who I didn't "grow up on," but when I got older, I wanted to get the full hip-hop/rap experience. I didn't grow up on Jeru the Damaja, BDP, and Wu-Tang, but I gave them a listen to after I got older and was glad I did.

#2 His lack of humility stinks! :smh:

#3 freak_1 including the Hot Boyz in the list of ringtone rappers is ridiculous. I mean I was feeling your post up to that point.

#4 Chicago has the rap game in a choke hold.
Common's last two albums, BE (2005)and Finding Forever (2007)
Kanye's last two albums, Late Registration (2005) and Graduate (2007)
Lupe's album, Food & Liquor (2006)
No other city can match album for album in the last two years!

#5 So many people base their opinions of the artists music on the artists themselves. This is where things get out of hand. Respect the music for what it is. I honestly don;t know how many of the rappers I listen to, that I'd kick it with. But it is what it is.

He was right, y'all are the ones that stink. Crucifying the dude, when all he fucked up was a few words. Busta Rhymes fucked up his own verse that he wrote more than Lupe fucked up Q-Tip's verse. I don't blame the cat at all. After hearin' people crucify me over some bullshit, I might just say, "Fuck you elitists, and no, I'm not gonna listen to it, just because y'all are being assholes." If before this happened, you were to ask him if he wanted to hear it, he probably would've said, "Yeah", but I'm with Lupe, I dont' want to listen to it either, because y'all are so busy suckin' their dicks.

Anybody can say they better than Jayz, Jim Jones and Campon said they were they went at him so what but ask them dudes about the history of the game and they can tell you. There's a respect for those who paved the way for bitches like Lupe and for him to act like ATCQ didn't matter or didn't have an impact on the game, not only did he disrespect them he disrespected Krs1, fab 5 freddy, DJ red alert, nice and smooth, pete rock, Rakim, Kane and all the rest of the heads who made this shit possible for his ass.

FUCK THAT NIGGA he's done.

When did he disrespect anybody, other than Hip-Hop elitists??? He didn't say fuck them, he said fuck y'all, and I'm with him. Y'all need to grow the fuck up and watch the show, because if you did, you'll see that it wasn't that big of a deal. Niggaz are just on some "gotcha" shit, because he's a "conscious" rapper. They just wanna say, "See, he aint that smart or better than the rest of them".

It's the truth. Thanks

No it's not. A few years ago Avril Lavigne mispronounced David Bowie's name at like the Grammy's and everybody crucified her, then what did she say????? "I didn't know who he was, I didn't listen to his music growing up." It's a generational thing, not a Black thing. Stop trying to diss Black folks. A Tribe Called Quest wasn't hot in Chicago and on Chicago radio. I know this for a fact, because I grew up listening to Chicago radio.

Naw, nigga. Fuck you.

He never said any of that, that's your Hip-Hop elitist view of it. After listenin' to y'all, I don't want to hear it either, and I actually kinda like Tribe before this. People fuck up words all the time. Jessica Simpson just did a few months ago in a tribute to Dolly Parton or some white country heifer. People talked about it for a few days, but nobody wanted to stone the bitch.

I'm just sorry that Lupe didn't see who his audience was earlier. A bunch of elitist snobs who are every bit as bad as Souljah Boy or 50 Cent fans. Now, I don't know who he's gonna sell to, but I'm kinda hopin' he does an anti-hero thing now, where he just goes at everybody or something, but yeah, fuck those nerds.:dance::dance:

THAT RIGHT THERE IS WHERE HE IS FUCKING UP...

He thinks he is dissing Tribe on some David Banner-ish type disrespect-the-elder bullshit, but his fanbase IS Tribes old fanbase (same with Kanye). The younger cats that dig these dudes dig them BECAUSE of the Native Tongues' influence on that particular style (the polished, well produced "backpacker"), the older cats that dig them dig them because they remind them of "better days" in hip-hop. That type of hip-hop would be so buried in the underground it wouldn't even have seen the light of day if it wasn't for the Native Tongues. I think Banner has started a trend where cats get defensive and make asses of themselves publicly instead of just clarifying themselves or shutting the fuck up. Would anybody even know who the fuck Lupe was without Okplayer? Will anybody give a shit who he is tomorrow if his Okplayer base deserts him?

I am not reading past this this is the most or one of the better
ways to sum up this fucking thread
the point is alot of these youngdumbfucks don't know about lyrics
and what it takes to preserve the artform
i dig tribe and i dig t.i but the truth is there is a difference in delivery and interpretation.
yeah one could argue that what is sweet to me may not be sweet to you but gotdamn respect that there was somebody you listened too to formulate your stlye from
lupe know that he was inspired by tribe to some degree he knows more than he may care to say becuase he looks like a retard sayin some of the shit he said then turn around and kick it wit pharrell who clearly is influenced by the afore mentioned artists
soap box crushed

This shows how black people have no kind of respect.

Even trashy ass Britney Spears wouldn't have fucked up Madonna's Like A Virgin.

What?

That's not only an unfair generalization of the black race, but of the show's performers, who, with the excepton of Lupe, T-Pain,etc. were good.

C'mon now.

You're too old for that shit...

SO ESSENTIALLY THE KIDS ARE REFLECTING WHAT THEY LEARNED FROM THE PARENTS. BAD ASS KIDS!

He never said any of that, that's your Hip-Hop elitist view of it. After listenin' to y'all, I don't want to hear it either, and I actually kinda like Tribe before this. You're missing the entire point. This is not about some elitist view of hip hop. I spend a good bit time defending alot of the rappers that get skewered on this board because I defend their right to make the kind of music they want to make. I'm far from an elitist.

The point is that Lupe should have just said, "I fucked up. My bad," and then left the shit alone. But he wants to run his mouth and disrespect a group that he just onstage giving a tribute to. You can defend his right to not be a fan of ATCQ, but is no defense for the arrogance and outright disrespect of the group.

The reason why Jessica Simpson was left alone after her fuck up is because she apologized and didn't try to make any excuse for it. That's not what happened here. And while I think it's pretty stupid to not want to listen (not become a fan of, but just listen) to a groundbreaking group that paved the way for the kind of music he's doing...that's totally his right.

I feel Lupe on this...
I have never heard Midnight Marauders..... and I don't really care to seek it out and take a listen.
I bought their last release, and I think the one before that....they were an ok listen, no replay value to me.
I understand his "high horses" comment because people (media, other artists, and fans) of that era believe that every album by their favorite artist, or every release of that era that had a major effect on them or their life also had the same effect on the whole world, or at least the whole hip-hop world. This ain't true!
New York IS NOT THE ALPHA & OMEGA OF HIP-HOP
I cannot listen to kool g rap, nas is cool but no replay value, never bought a big daddy kane record, don't really care for de la soul.....to many, these thoughts are blasphemous.
But these same people can't relate to Luke & 2 Live Crew, Kilo Ali, Outkast, Witchdoctor, Cool Breeze, 8ball & MJG, UGK, Snoop, Kriss Kross, JD. And even call MY music coon rap?! WTF
I can relate to what Lupe said.... Whats classic to you, ain't classic to me.
This shit is art man, ain't no index to measure it..... it just is what it is.
You get from it what you get from it!

Are you fucking serious that album was a classic you must be a young head.... wanna dance huh nigga?
