This Dude Is Supposed To Be Real Hip Hop?

This is the nerdy little bitch some of you were clamoring for, like he was the anti-50 and going to save hip hop :smh:

Q-tip says:

“I’m not trying to make this any bigger than it is. But, I just want to clear up one thing….

We never hunted him down and begged him to be a part of the show or anything like that. His name was pitched to us by VH1, and we said, ok cool. The only time I spoke to Lupe about the Hip Hop honors performance was on a conference call, which we did with the others artists too, like Busta and Common, to plan the performance.

When VH1 brought his name up, based on what he had said about us before, I thought it was ironic and it kind of humored me. All that stuff he said about never listening to a Tribe album before and having no interest in doing so, it doesn’t make sense to me.

As I said on the show itself, it was listening to NWA’s “Straight Outta Compton” that inspired us to make “Low-End Theory,” and years later, I spoke to Dr. Dre and he told me that hearing “Low-End Theory,” inspired him to make “The Chronic.” That’s what music does. That’s what artists do, they seek out information, of all kinds.

But no, I never hunted him down to be part of the tribute. That didn’t happen.”

http://www.vibe.com/news/news_headlines/2007/10/lupe_fiasco_gate/

Lupe aired out his grievances exclusively to VIBE concerning the backlash to the revelation that he missed out on Marauders. "[Tribe] didn't sell 10 million records, so why would people think they had a blanket on the world like that? MC Hammer was way more popular to me than Tribe Called Quest."

It's all about hip hop vanity, Lupe explains. "Because there's kids in Harlem who right now would never ever listen to Midnight Marauders, I don't give a fuck what you do, they'll never listen to Q-Tip and they want to be rappers and they want to talk about positive things. So why would you shoot them down?"

His voice rises. "It's like, 'Oh, you ain't never listened to Midnight Marauders? You ain't expanding your horizons? Oh, you ain't real' cause they did that shit to me! 'Oh Lupe, that's fucked up man, I don't fuck with you now, I'm not buying your next album' and be dead serious! It made me feel like, 'You dirty bastards. Like how dare you.'"

Nerdy Bitch
So I've explained this to a lot of people...let me name drop a few:

#1 Fab 5 Freddy
#2 Q-TIP!!!!...THAT'S RIGHT THE LEADER OF THE GROUP HIMSELF!!!
#3 Common
#4 Questlove

and more....ahem....

"I DID NOT GROW UP ON ATCQ!!!..."

THE LITTLE GHETTO KID FROM THE MEAN STREETS OF THE WESTSIDE OF CHICAGO GREW UP ON SPICE 1, 8-BALL & MJG, NWA AND SNOOP DOGG...

I WASNT A BACKPACKER RAP ENTHUSIAST!!!...I NEVER CLAIMED TO BE...I GREW UP ON GANGSTA RAP!!!

HAVE I LISTENED TO MM IN ITS ENTIRETY?...NO!!!...(Sorry Quest)...

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSES AND YOUR SACRED COWS...SOME OF YA'LL MAKE ME SICK...

AND FYI WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY OFFERED TO ME I TURNED IT DOWN BECAUSE I FELT IT WAS OUT OF PLACE FOR ME TO BE HONORING THEM BECAUSE WHILE I WAS FULLY AWARE OF THEIR IMPACT IN HIP-HOP I WASNT REALLY AWARE OF THEIR MUSIC LIKE THAT...BUT GUESS WHO WANTED ME TO BE APART OF IT....HMMMM...HOW ABOUT...Q-TIP!!!...

SO NOW ARE YOU GOING TO HATE ON "ATCQ" BECAUSE THEY WANTED SOMEBODY WHO DIDNT REALLY KNOW THERE MUSIC TO HONOR THEM BY COVERING SOME OF THEIR MUSIC?...THINK ON THAT OKP'S

P.S. I FORGET THE WORDS TO SOME OF MY OWN SONGS ON STAGE...HEY IT HAPPENS...

Phonte From Little Brother
You fuckin up, my nig. Straight up and down.

What's even more amazing is the same cats on this site defending your arrogance and ignorance on this topic are the same ones who would be ready to FLIP if the statements you made about MM were said by a Webbie, Plies, or Soulja Boy.

I purposely remained silent during Fiascogate just to see how it all would play out and to see how my man would gain control of the situation, but with you forgetting the lyrics to a classic song from a classic group on national television while paying tribute to them, the 2nd plane has officially hit the tower.

You're my homeboy and a colleague that I hold in high regard. I'm a fan of your work. Even moreso, we've chopped it up on numerous occasions so you know that everything I say is coming from a place of respect and concern:

>"I DID NOT GROW UP ON ATCQ!!!..."

>THE LITTLE GHETTO KID FROM THE MEAN STREETS OF THE WESTSIDE OF
>CHICAGO GREW UP ON SPICE 1, 8-BALL & MJG, NWA AND SNOOP
>DOGG...

That's fine, but your music and more importantly your image leans more towards Native Tongues than killaman-killaman-saykillamankillaman-wit me glock. If it walks and talks like a duck, most people would call it one. You can't blame OKP's or anybody else for putting you inside a box that you were willing to sit comfortably in and benefit from (see: Diamonds, American Terrorist, Daydreaming, I Gotcha).

>I WASNT A BACKPACKER RAP ENTHUSIAST!!!...I NEVER CLAIMED TO
>BE...I GREW UP ON GANGSTA RAP!!!

I have several problems with the term 'backpacker rap,' but okay. However, if you truly grew up on gangsta shit and it was a big influence on you, you should do more Pop Pop's and less Dumb It Down's to help your listeners understand that.

>HAVE I LISTENED TO MM IN ITS ENTIRETY?...NO!!!...(Sorry
>Quest)...

This statement is nothing but pure arrogance. I wonder how your friend Q-Tip would feel about you 'having no interest' in hearing what many consider to be his landmark album....especially after you forgot his lyrics during a tribute and your only defense is, "hey, shit happens......but I still ain't listening to the album tho..."

>GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSES AND YOUR SACRED COWS...SOME OF YA'LL
>MAKE ME SICK...

I'm an artist so I understand how we all go through our times of arrogance and flat out niggotry, but seriously, now is not the time for this. You had a fuck up and there's really no one to blame but yourself.

>AND FYI WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY OFFERED TO ME I TURNED IT DOWN
>BECAUSE I FELT IT WAS OUT OF PLACE FOR ME TO BE HONORING THEM
>BECAUSE WHILE I WAS FULLY AWARE OF THEIR IMPACT IN HIP-HOP I
>WASNT REALLY AWARE OF THEIR MUSIC LIKE THAT...BUT GUESS WHO
>WANTED ME TO BE APART OF IT....HMMMM...HOW
>ABOUT...Q-TIP!!!...
>
>SO NOW ARE YOU GOING TO HATE ON "ATCQ" BECAUSE THEY WANTED
>SOMEBODY WHO DIDNT REALLY KNOW THERE MUSIC TO HONOR THEM BY
>COVERING SOME OF THEIR MUSIC?...THINK ON THAT OKP'S

Tip was covering his ass.

More than anything, it seems to me that Tip knew you were one of the only available celebrities that would translate to VH1's audience and do his legacy justice.

Kanye is in the stratosphere right now. The LB's, Tanya's, Kidz, and Strange Fruit's of the world are nobodies on a mainstream level. You and Pharrell are the only celebrities who are (seemingly?) cut from Tribe's cloth and would make sense in the context of the show.

>P.S. I FORGET THE WORDS TO SOME OF MY OWN SONGS ON STAGE...HEY
>IT HAPPENS...

Normally cats would be forgiving of a slip up, but when that slip-up was preceded by several months of bragging about how 'I've never heard the album and really don't care to,' well......you do the math.

Just some words of concern, fam.

Best of luck with "The Cool" and I hope the remix comes out dope.

Your Homie, Peer, and Fan,
Tigallo

I feel Lupe on this...
I have never heard Midnight Marauders..... and I don't really care to seek it out and take a listen.
I bought their last release, and I think the one before that....they were an ok listen, no replay value to me.
I understand his "high horses" comment because people (media, other artists, and fans) of that era believe that every album by their favorite artist, or every release of that era that had a major effect on them or their life also had the same effect on the whole world, or at least the whole hip-hop world. This ain't true!
New York IS NOT THE ALPHA & OMEGA OF HIP-HOP
I cannot listen to kool g rap, nas is cool but no replay value, never bought a big daddy kane record, don't really care for de la soul.....to many, these thoughts are blasphemous.
But these same people can't relate to Luke & 2 Live Crew, Kilo Ali, Outkast, Witchdoctor, Cool Breeze, 8ball & MJG, UGK, Snoop, Kriss Kross, JD. And even call MY music coon rap?! WTF
I can relate to what Lupe said.... Whats classic to you, ain't classic to me.
This shit is art man, ain't no index to measure it..... it just is what it is.
You get from it what you get from it!

The "Crack Baby" generation is on a whole different vibe.

I understand you little mothafuckas and how you all came to be.

Ok. He didn't grow up on Tribe, yet he took the invitation to do the show and couldn't even learn the lyrics well enough to do a descent performance. Damn, if you weren't gonna learn the lyrics, you shouldn't have did the show. It's the principle of it.

Midnight Marauders was dope!

Isn't this kinda like some arrogant NBA rookie mothafucka saying he never watched Michael Jordon or Magic Johnson?

In other words he didnt study the game.

Floyd Mayweather said he was better than BOTH Sugar Rays

These young stupid muthafux:smh:

Lupe tore his drawers on this one. Lost a lot respect in the H.H.C. They're ripping that dude to shreds on okayplayer.

It's funny hearing rappers say they never listened to Tribe or De La. I grew up consuming their albums in high school (and oh yes, I listened to NWA and Ice Cube on a regular) Midnight Marauders was and still is one of favorite albums of all time. But we have to keep in mind that many of us are in our 30's so when these albums were big to us we were at an age where we could actually listen and absorb them.

The best thing Lupe could have done was come out and say ..."I was excited that night and due to a mis-step I dropped the lyrics on a verse" and been done with it. I wouldn't go into explanations on how Tribe wasn't all of that because "unbeknown to him obviously" the people who are giving him a chance today in their 30's lean towards him because of his "TCQ" leanings. So basically he is dissing a built in fan base....

Lupe is really smelling himself right now. His problem is that his work doesn't match his confidence level, and what happens is what usually happens when people think they are better than they really are - they say shit that if their grip on reality was tight, they wouldn't say. That and the fact that he doesn't understand people are going to talk, especially if you fuck up. He fucked up, and didn't, or couldn't take it like a man. I hope he gets a lesson in humility from this.

EXACTLY

Customer Service 101, give a quick, slightly self deprecating answer, and shut the fuck up. The kid needs media training. Badly

I feel Lupe on this...
As a matter of fact, I feel him too. Outside of their major hits, I didn't listen to A Tribe Called Quest either. BUT, later on I did go back and listen to their stuff and was blown away by what I missed out on.
I have never heard Midnight Marauders..... and I don't really care to seek it out and take a listen.
You need to, hip hop at it's finest. Pure lyricism and dope musical backdrops.
I bought their last release, and I think the one before that....they were an ok listen, no replay value to me.
 Clean out the wax in your ears man.
I understand his "high horses" comment because people (media, other artists, and fans) of that era believe that every album by their favorite artist, or every release of that era that had a major effect on them or their life also had the same effect on the whole world, or at least the whole hip-hop world. This statement is beyond ridiculous. While not every album by every artist had a major impact, you can get a unanimous choice on the one's that did. That era was responsible for what you listen to now. That's the problem with black folks, history means nothing to them.
New York IS NOT THE ALPHA & OMEGA OF HIP-HOP
Maybe not, but it is the Alpha, you cannot diminish New York's place in hip hop. If it wasn't for NY, there would be no hip hop, give them the respect they deserve.
I cannot listen to kool g rap, nas is cool but no replay value, never bought a big daddy kane record, don't really care for de la soul.....to many, these thoughts are blasphemous.
No it isn't, it just means you have no valid opinion of hip hop, that's all. No big deal.
But these same people can't relate to Luke & 2 Live Crew, Kilo Ali, Outkast, Witchdoctor, Cool Breeze, 8ball & MJG, UGK, Snoop, Kriss Kross, JD. And even call MY music coon rap?! WTF
This is so closed minded, it's not even funny. I grew up listening to all those. I still quote Cool Breeze verse from watch for the hook. Those are respected southern artists, so your argument is flawed from the jump. What people call coon rap is these ringtone rappers, like hurricane chris, souljah boy, D4L, Dem Franchize Boyz, Hot Boyz and any of these non talented fools disrespecting the southern artists that came before them
I can relate to what Lupe said....What's classic to you, ain't classic to me.
True, but there is things that 99% of the hip hop community will agree is classic.
This shit is art man, ain't no index to measure it.....it just is what it is.
You get from it what you get from it!
Obviously, you like coontastic bullshit and think it's art, but it isn't. It's crap, like I said you have no valid opinion of hip hop. So sit your ass in the corner and shut the fuck up.

He fucked up, but his music is still good dude. You didn't like it, fine. Don't make it wack.

My opinion is Lupe screwed himself and needs to go into damage control real fast or his next shit, The Cool will go the way of Food & Liquor, triple wood.

Dumb It Down is dope, if you don't like then it was meant for you to hear it. Not everything can be Ay Bay Bay

these kids today I swear:smh::smh: No respect whatsoever. If he had so little regard for ATCQ why the fuck did he do the tribute at all. Could it be because he was starving for some kind of limelight after his album went triple wood.

I think you could tell who's heart was into it(T.I., Busta, Common, Ice-T HEll even Bow Wow) and who was just going thru the motions(T-Pain, Keisha Cole, Lupe) during all the performances.

Sometimes it's best to just SHUT THE FUCK UP! and honor the people that came before you.

This young cat has no idea how similar his music is to Tribe's. It's alternative hip-hop. The same kind of cats that would listen to Tribe would more than likely be drawn to a Lupe album. Does his dumb ass not realize how many bridges he's burning by talking greasy about Tribe like that.

THAT RIGHT THERE IS WHERE HE IS FUCKING UP...

He thinks he is dissing Tribe on some David Banner-ish type disrespect-the-elder bullshit, but his fanbase IS Tribes old fanbase (same with Kanye). The younger cats that dig these dudes dig them BECAUSE of the Native Tongues' influence on that particular style (the polished, well produced "backpacker"), the older cats that dig them dig them because they remind them of "better days" in hip-hop. That type of hip-hop would be so buried in the underground it wouldn't even have seen the light of day if it wasn't for the Native Tongues. I think Banner has started a trend where cats get defensive and make asses of themselves publicly instead of just clarifying themselves or shutting the fuck up. Would anybody even know who the fuck Lupe was without Okplayer? Will anybody give a shit who he is tomorrow if his Okplayer base deserts him?

Dude, I'm all over that Little Brother. One of my favorite current groups right now.

Got all their shit on my computer and it stays in rotation. Big Little Brother fan here, so you don't have to tell, I'm ahead of you man. I'm buying the cool too.

I was really disappointed with Lupe's album. Let's be frank here. It was garbage. Lupe is a mix-tape rapper. His lyrics may be tight but his flow is garbage. Now this dude has the gall to disrespect one of the greatest Hip-Hop acts of all time. That shows his immaturity and his ignorance. Just because you don't listen to a group doesn't mean you should try to deny them their place in history.

Shit I don't listen to UGK and 8-Ball & MJG but I wouldn't dare deny them their rightful respect. This dude needs to smarten up.

Really I don't see why people like Lupe. He's whack to me. People made him out to be more than what he was because they were so desperate to have a "savior" for Hip-Hop. Just because he's a conscious mc doesn't mean he's dope.

This I agree with. Lupe needs to get his head right and get it out of his ass.

i could really care less. I like Lupe's music and i like Tribe... I didnt stop listening to JayZ cuz him and nas beefed...so that wont change anything for me personally

First you gotta ask yourself, who gives a fuck about okplayer?

The "Crack Baby" generation is on a whole different vibe.

I understand you little mothafuckas and how you all came to be.

This shows how black people have no kind of respect.

Even trashy ass Britney Spears wouldn't have fucked up Madonna's Like A Virgin.

Phonte said it all man. I listened to everything and there are some albums you had to dissect no matter what your hip hop preference is. There are plenty of albums out there that I would not be in rotation but i sat down and absorbed the contribution to hip hop. Notice i said ALBUMS. Seems to be a lost art nowadays. I know plenty of hard core NY cats that when they heard Southernplayer... they had to sit down and listen. If you are a music Fan you will give anything a try but it may not get rotation after that. We need a progressive hip hop avenue (tv, radio, etc) so that the youth can get some education to see the evolution in hip hop. There is a Hole in the game.

Um, yes?

First you gotta ask yourself, who gives a fuck about okplayer?

I'm not talking about the site, I'm talking about a TYPE of listener (his fanbase basically). Lupe ain't getting any of Jeezy's fans, no matter how many old school artists he disses or how much gangster rap he claims to have come up on. Hell, you are seeing in this thread how cats that don't feel his music see him with terms like "fag" and "nerd" being thrown around. If dude is a "fake backpacker" much like all the "fake gangsters" in the industry, then he's just another fake. He needs to do HIM.

I remember hearing some old Lupe freestyles and he WAS on some guntalk type bullshit (sounding like 150 other cats coming out of NYC on that bullshit), I think somebody pulled his coat and let him know that New York mixtape guntalk is played out in NEW YORK, so it definitely ain't gonna fly coming from Chicago. Dude can flow, but he needs to figure out what it is he is gonna be. Walking around with a skateboard you don't know how to ride and saying shit you don't necessarily believe ain't gonna last forever.

Matter of fact, even if dude is a "gangsta" by nature, it's too late, who would take him seriously in that role after "Kick Push"?

Um, yes?

First you gotta ask yourself, who gives a fuck about okplayer?

Um...NO.

Outside of the rabid Chicago cats who support everything coming out of the Chi, Those OKPlayer cats are Lupe's main supporters.

As someone mentioned earlier, fans of Tribe would, more than likely, be fans of Lupe - same vibe. Whether he grew up listening to killa hip-hop or not, the fact is that he doesn't MAKE killa hip-hop.

I think it's sad that Lupe is the one who is riding a high horse claiming that, even now, he won't give "Midnight Marauders" a listen. Taste is taste and anyone can like whatever they want but you have to give something a listen to qualify with having a valid opinion. I don't like De La Soul. I hate "3 Feet High and Rising" and don't think too highly of "De La Soul is Dead" either. However, I own both albums and have given them multiple listens. Then I've formulated an opinion around my listening experience.
Lupe is basically saying it doesn't matter if he fucked up the Tribe performance because it's not as though he's a fan anyway. What type of shit is that?

I'm sorry, but I'm on some Colin Powell shit right now... anyone got a condensed summary of what you cats are talking about? What happened? :dunno:

Edit: Ok, so I just got put up on what happened... Fuck Lupe Fiasco.
