The standard rate at Black barbershops is now $35-$40

My barber is still $25, and I add a $5 tip.

During covid I just cut my own shit, and recently started going back to him.
Where u live at?? I haven't paid under $50 in I don't know how long. But I get asa I come into to the shop and I get my hair wash...

Yeah I take my kids to the barber once a month and shape them up every week and clean up the taper. Every so often I'll do the whole cut myself but of course the barber comes out better.

I just go like every 6 - 8 weeks and just shape myself up the rest of the time as well.

It's like $25 for big kids here now and $20 for lil kids. Adults is $30 - $35.
You should own your own clippers and know how to maintain your cut until your next barber visit by now. Going to the barber once a week is too excessive.
These....

Let’s get some updated tweets:

Like I said nigs made barbers feel like essential workers when everybody started looking like wolverine cause barbershops were closed for months… once they saw people act like they couldn’t buy a set of clippers and maintain their own cuts it was like ohhhhh these people really need me…yesterday prices are not today prices.. the fact people still paying is making them really think they got full power

They lucky the Dominicans from ny haven’t migrated to many other cities to take advantage of these price hikes elsewhere.. cause best believe they will charge less and sad to say them nigs kinda nice with the clippers and will have people jump ship to them…cutting hair, baseball, and selling drugs that they skillset
Dominicans are doing it too apparently........

What part of Brooklyn he live in? That rent in a particular area could be high ass fuck and a cac area… He’s also Palestinian which means his hair is different and probably needs more done than simple black haircuts

I pay about that much.

$25 for the haircut

$5 for lineup for facial hair

$ 5 or 10 tip

I've been going to him since I was 11 or 12.

Here is what I think the problem is…these barbers see their customers with nice cars and houses and they want to live like them. My thing is: if you want to live like them then you need to either find a good side hussle or own your own shop. These barbers see other people shinning and want to take a shortcut not understanding the time, the education, and the accumulation of experience that it took for their customers to get to that place. Shit, some brothers are retiring after putting 20 years in the military and are young enough to get their pension from the military and still get a job paying 6 figures (that is very normal in The DMV). It’s shit like this these barbers don’t understand. There are no shortcuts to success.

The reason why I feel this way is because my barber from 12 years ago would always make side comments about what I had and he wasn’t the only one. What he didn’t understand is that I was married in a 2 income household pulling 200k plus. He didn’t understand the blood, sweat, and tears that went into that. All he could do is compare himself, which is stupid, and like I said he wasn’t the only barber I knew with that bullshit.

And to top it all off, he was a terrible barber! The bama wouldn’t cut my hair with the grain. He wanted to cut against the grain because he could be done faster. It’s shit like that! Learn your craft well and build.

What’s already happening is that these Vietnamese and folks from other cultures are starting to cut black hair and the charge a whole lot less. They’re going to price themselves out and lose loyalty with these bullshit charges. The rent for a lot of these places haven’t even changed that much and booth rent ain’t went up that much higher either to justify the bullshit prices they charge. Ok.That’s my rant.

Lol some barbers be eating especially depending in what city and kinda traffic they get.. covid just showed them that people rely on them to much for their beauty and maintenance and they decided to test the waters to see how far people are willing to spend on their services.. the fact that they can charge this high and yet have to come down on prices show they can get away with it.. so the question is do you fault the biz for the price hike or the demographic of consumer willing to pay the price hike? There’s always alternatives aka cutting your own hair but consumers overall seem to not willingly take that step

Shit mines is $30 my Son's is $25 plus $10 tip but it's worth it, developed lots of friendships through the shop and the barbershop sponsored my youth football team

Currently I can get a cut, slight taper on the sides and back, beard, and mustache for $40 with tip. (NYC). That shit will look nice for about a week and then its back the fitted caps or the sponge for the next 2 weeks and I'll shape up my own facial hairs. I don't have a long wait and I can book in advance.

Ain't no haircut without special designs, or dying, or some other special shit worth no more than 25. They using the same clippers, little to no chemicals, not washing hair first, etc, etc. Then you gotta wait forever in a dirty area to get the privelidge of doing that? Sheed.

Wait, what....mfs making $146/hr? For a fucking fade!?!?

Yep. It's about having the right mindset and right clientele. My Queens barber is always packed cause he doesn't allow hanging out in his shop, he doesn't play sports on the TV and he doesn't do appointments. He says all those things cause upset feelings and tension and that means moms won't bring their kids to the shop.

To put shit into context. If you’re slow ass barber and it takes you an hour to cut one head(Not realistic, but let’s still say) Let’s also say 8 cuts a day equals an 8-hour work day. If he only works 5 days a week and charges $40 per cut average. That’s $83,500 a year. I know there are chair rental costs , supplies etc, but even if you spend $20k a year on that (which I doubt, these dudes aren’t making a shitty living.

Here in SF all the shops are goin up to 65 minimum and shave. The shop I’m at now we’re discussing it but most of our clients tip well so there isn’t necessarily a need to increase prices

and i think a lot y’all are forgetting prices are relative. In metro areas prices should be higher compared to suburban or rural areas. As a barber in one of the most expensive areas in the country i should be charging a 100 head but it’s hard to make the common customer understand that

Yes it relative.. actually the barber in suburban and rural areas should be charging more, while the barber in the metro area should be charging less. Why? Because the barber in the metro area has an abundance of customers, a well as competition.
While the suburban and rural areas lack as much competition and customers.

Also you have to take into account the demographics of the neighborhood, city, etc... your customer base are at.

It's not a one size fits all.
