the silver is the live version, which supports streaming video, some internet apps such as facebook, etc. & is the most up to date. Other than that the black one should work fine.

No the black one don't work too good with mkv

Some people had trouble playing large mkv files

Also the black one doesn't get firmware updates anymore

damn did'nt know that. i know its been about a yr for mine...as for .mkv's i've never had an issue playing them. Guess it does'nt occur with every wdtv...Now my unit does freeze up on rare occasions.

El pirate del caribe had trouble with that, he has the black one

It plays fine on my live one

Sometimes you have to mux them. They will play fine after that. Takes about two minutes.

Anybody have any luck installing custom firmware on the wdtv live plus? I tried using the wdtv live instructions and it didn't work. Was wondering if there is a different set with plus. I followed this video to no avail.

I did about 250 custom movie sheets last night in just my action movie folder in Thumbgen and I cant use the shit because this fucking firmware!

I think they have finally made a version for the live+ but I am sure the standard firmware doesn't work on the plus.
BTW here is what I have found on another board about the mkv issue
2) Fix your MKV file taking out the Header Compression
The Matroska specification allows for a form of compression called “Header Removal,” that before recently was rarely encountered. The WDTV players do not yet support this form of compression.
Recent versions (Version 4.1.0, July 1, 2010 and later) of the popular MKVMerge tool (which is used to create many MKV files) turn this feature ON by default on audio and certain video tracks.
If you suspect that this is your issue (MEDIAINFO will report the Writing Library as MKVMERGE Version 4.1 or later) you can correct it by loading the file into MKVMERGE, then selecting the track(s). Click the Extra Settings Tab and set Compression to NONE. Re-mux the file. This turns OFF the Header Removal Compression and restores the file.

3) With the file now fixed and with no "Header Compression" you can play it on WDTV with no problem at all.

Word. Avatar was about 30. I downloaded it and deleted it. My 1080p movies are 8 to 10gb. 720p's are 4gb.
You ninjas are on some other level with these 45gb movies

Yeah I have the Plus version which is 1.03.39_b_wdlxtv.com_wdlxtv_plus-0.4.3.1

Also tried this video still didnt work. I think it may be the firmware. Im looking for another version of plus.

Do videos sometimes show skippy and with glitches like they sometimes do on a computer without the right codecs? What about seeking, fast forwarding and rewinding stubborn files?

good post

Guess it's time to pick one up. I want the latest version as I'm sure it has all the updates. Is this a correct assumption?

I have the newest version and it updated twice as soon as I plugged in the network cable. About 5 min and update and you done. WDTV are pushing out updates because there was some problems with the Netflix not working.

The only movie I do straight blu ray rips on are those movies that show off my home theater specs to the max, sound as well as video I have a 2tb HDD just for those company show off movies...

Avatar,Kick Ass,Toy Story 3,Cars ,Transformers The Dark Knight Casino Royal just a few. But most of my rips are right around 6-10gb I just cant go any lower than that because of video quality
standards I set..

I have been searching for about an hour on the web. Where are the Firmware updates for the second version of the WDTV HD media player???? is this the last update to the firmware??????

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_hd

If so this shit hasn't been updated for over a year :smh::smh::smh::smh::smh::smh:

I told u to get the silver one live version

They not updating the first wd tv anymore

I understand the people who already have the first black one not wanting to upgrade and tellin u to get the black one

But since u gettin a new one u might as well get the current version

Man what the fluck. I updated the jawn and plugged it in properly. I dl dark knight and the shit looked wonderful, then I went to go back to my cable and the damn volume didn't work on my cable that is hooked up via USB but it worked on my cable that is hooked up thru regular wires I have two tuners on my tv. Then I turned my tv off and back on and the volume worked on my tv thru USB. Then I dl Avatar picture looked awsome but the flucking sound don't work. What the fluck is going on I'm panicking BGOL do I need to get the new one. I own the second version not the live one. Again I'm not having issues with freezing up but with the damn audio:angry::angry::angry::angry:

like benQ mentioned, there is the live (the grey one) which supports streaming video

who has the grey one ...is better than plus or does it depend on preference....

think i might run out & cop it today or tomorrow....

the live supports streaming video (no need to unplug it to transfer files) and some online apps such as netflix, etc...really comes down to preference IMO. But like BenQ mentioned, this one is still receiving the latest updates.
