Seems like people are missing the obvious here. BGOL’s core draw has been two things:
  1. Porn
  2. Bootlegged copyrighted material
No way you could ever really scale or go “mainstream” with the above as prominent features, especially as a black-oriented website. If you look at the Coli or even a site like Lipstick Alley, they’re built around hip-hop, sports talk, and celebrity gossip, and expand their memberships and popularity from there.

I think BGOL had, and still has, the ability to be the pre-eminent black male-oriented website out there. We have guys here who can write, do video and podcasts, are into sports, politics, IT, comics, video games, have inside knowledge of show biz, and all kinds of other shit. But the organization simply isn’t there. No has figured out how to carry the BGOL audience to a more mainstream platform. We haven’t even done what the www.negromanosphere.com has accomplished. So couple the porn, bootlegged movies and music and software, lack of organization and direction, with a fear of getting “ocked” and BGOL will forever remain an underground website. Our greatest strength is our greatest weakness.

A few necessary things:

(1) Leadership
(2) A second offsite platform
(3) A mixture of fresh new blood and new members offline and online locally and nationally or globally.
(4) Keep the same vibe and spirit here but in an open mainstream setting.

BGOL can safely remain what it is and keep it's anonymity. That means it can remain underground. But to do those big mainstream things, which are entirely possible and doable, it will have to be done offsite on a separate platform with different screen names and all that. BGOL will have to be kept at a distance and STAY underground.

The other platform can then be free to blow up like other traditional mainstream websites like Worldstar or whatever. And I KNOW HNIC won't complain. He's been waiting on something like that for years.

What up fam. Sorry to hear you and HNIC couldn’t get things worked out. I do remember you being vocal/hyped about the update, and prepared to roll up your sleeves and help HNIC get Xenforo dialed in. There was definitely a feeling of excitement amongst all the members when the new board rolled out, but here we are years later with the same base theme and features.

It’s good to see you pop in from time to time. I log in over at the other place on occasion, and do enjoy it. It’s a younger demographic for sure, but as was said earlier in the thread, you can get a comedy/sports/shit talking fix if you’re at work and want to browse on company issued hardware. When chillin at home it’s still a solid spot to just take in some different perspectives on a variety of topics. The sports threads go like crazy, and do old school BGOL activity numbers...the comedy and shit talking cannot be denied. THAT I do miss...we used to have some willlld ass sports threads come football season or NBA playoff time. We don’t even talk shit bout dem Cowboys like we used to. Typical Sunday Cowboys thread would go 6-7 pages easy :sad: @D-TOWN REP

Many of us are still here and this is still home...we just don’t post as much.

I tend to like the grimier parts of this site. I’m good with the porn, the pointless arguments are often hilarious to me and I like to have the absolute, ignorant ass freedom to call someone a fag when he’s acting like a fag.

But I don’t really see you and Bills getting down like that. Your prolific porn posting would slow to a crawl over there but you would likely thrive as well (your anti-sickle cell activism, for example, would have gotten a lot more traction).

Having said all that, I prefer this site over the Coli. It’s way too de-fanged and effeminate for me.

I respect your POV, but I really don’t think it’s possible. Are you aware of any other mainstream sites that were born out of or have corresponding underground sites? Keep in mind that an open “porn-free” BGOL has been tried before and it failed. All I remember from it are bullshit Masterbaker threads.

Clearly the audience is there, because I can’t name ONE website that’s TRULY oriented to brothers. Not a single goddamn one! Shit like the Root, VerySmartBros, the Grio or Blavity are geared towards black women, gay black men and intersectional Negroes. Which is why we come here and cobble together our own shit.

Instead of criticizing the Coli and former BGOL members who post there now, we should all be trying to link up and do some higher-level shit.
 
I've noticed a lot of the members there are big fans of pro wrestling, they complain and bitch about how racist Vince McMahon and most of the ppl in that industry are but still have been supporting them for decades of their lives
