Your convo is deep.

Looking at her wiki page the charts and who ELSE was popping a the same time?

It don't make SENSE she aint blow up more

She could sing dance AND act.

and her LOOK???

She had hit movie and hit song and hit on Broadway?!?!?

What more you need?

Especially at that time?

She REALLY couldn't find that SECOND hit?
Yeah man. She really did check all the boxes like you and brother @4 Dimensional said.

Guess it as her timing. What exactly was it? She should have been a force. Imagine if she had appeared opposite Prince in "Purple Rain" for instance.

@4 Dimensional

OK his explains a lot.

Cara’s recording career was negatively affected by the legal problems she had in the ‘80s with her label, RSO Records. Cara sued the label and eight years later, she won a jury verdict and finally began earning royalties that she had been unable to collect during this contentious period. To make matters worse, other labels did not want to sign Cara because she had sued RSO.

Right. It’s interesting. There was nothing that should have stopped the come up unless there is some force we don’t know about.

DK: With the What A Feelin’ album, you had great success with Giorgio Moroder, co-writing three hits together. Did you and Giorgio discuss making another album?

Cara: After that album, I sued my label. First of all, my label had fallen apart by itself…it lost its distribution. And I was stuck with a label president who continued to [not pay me], and continued to use me for distribution for his little small label. All the other artists that had been on RSO Records went elsewhere. When that dissolved, the Bee Gees left and Yvonne Elliman left. And I, not having good management or a good lawyer, I thought I was obligated to this record president who signed me from a movie (Fame). And I’d had enough. I had two of the biggest hits of the decade and I was not seeing a dime. So I sued him, and it took eight years and it cost me my future as a recording artist, because no other label would sign me. RSO was sending out threatening letters to the other labels. And the one label that did sign me, they said they would stand by me through the lawsuit. But once I finished my album (Carasmatic, in 1987), they shelved it and didn’t promote it. Thankfully I do own those tracks; I plan to sell it online later this year. It took me eight years to get through the whole good ol’ boy network in the music industry, because it seemed that I sued one man and it just kind of spiraled into the entire industry turning against me because of it. So it turned me off to the music business entirely.

(Note: In 1993 Cara won her case with a jury verdict in California, and she finally began earning royalties a decade after her hit success.)

Irene Cara endured a series of career setbacks due to personal and professional obstacles throughout the 1980s. The culmination of these issues led to her fleeing the spotlight while feeling completely disenchanted with the entertainment industry, music in particular. Some of these problems and missteps include.

  1. The Lawsuit - The biggest setback for Cara was a lawsuit against her record label, Network Records, and her management team, Al Coury Inc. She sued them for $10 million in unpaid royalties on her hit songs . It took years to reach a settlement, and during that time she spent all of the little money she had on lawyer fees, leaving her broke. The suit slowed her music career to a halt since she wasn’t recording any new material. Though she ultimately won $1.5 million from the lawsuit, she may have lost more than she gained from overall opportunity cost.
  2. Tarnished Reputation - Cara has claimed in interviews that she was blacklisted in the music industry. The word around town was that she was difficult to work with, so nobody wanted to hire or collaborate with her. She claims this was related to the lawsuit.
  3. Poor Movie Choices - People often forget that Irene Cara not only performed two of the key songs in soundtrack of the movie Fame, but she also played Coco Hernandez in the movie. And she was really good: so good that she earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress (she lost to Sissy Spacek). But she also starred in over a dozen other roles after this performance. She never found the same level of success, and progressively took smaller and smaller roles, and eventually only got work as a voice actor. Her acting career faltered, and she also didn’t get any juicy soundtrack songs, which leads to…
  4. Compartmentalized Music Success - Cara failed to leverage her success on movie soundtracks into her own personal songs and albums. Her main studio albums - 1982’s Anyone Can See and 1983’s What a Feeling - didn’t give fans much of what they wanted, so despite having massive commercial success for soundtrack songs “Flashdance… What A Feeling,” “Fame” and “Out Here On My Own,” they didn’t translate commercial success for her two studio album projects. Her third album, Carasmatic, was shelved by Elektra Records. When it was finally released, it was a critical and commercial failure (and it arrived years after it her peak time, so it already faced an uphill battle).
  5. Personal issues - She downplays this, but she was a known coke user, possibly connected to the stress of her case. She also divorced her husband at an already tumultuous time in her life.
The above-mentioned points did not completely ruin her career. After her personal and professional downfall in Hollywood, she started recording and performing overseas, and found some success. She also did some stage work. Still, it’s hard not to wonder what could have been if she had better luck.

.

But while Cara was having hit records and receiving awards for "Flashdance... What a Feeling", she was also feeling ripped off by her record company, Network Records, and planning to sue. The lawsuit she filed resulted in a backlash that destroyed her reputation in the entertainment industry. It would be eight years before the courts would acknowledge the harm she suffered and she would begin receiving royalties for the recordings she had made since signing with the label.

Yeah, not sure if it was bad management or what, I've wondered the same thing.

She got married to some dude in the mid 80s (broke my fuckin 14 year old heart  ). Don't know if that maybe had anything to do with it.

RIP.
I don't mean to be an ass, but what exactly do folks mean when they say they want privacy when they make things public? If the departed is a public figure, of course, the public will react and want to know more.

Would you rather grieve and make the preparations or spend hours on the internet fighting rumors on what happened? Even if they immediately knew what happened it isn't the time to start 20 questions on if it was preventable or not. That's all they are saying. Let them process everything that's happening and don't speculate on the cause

apparently it was that court case that completely derailed her career.

Now we see yet ANOTHER reason we need to completely flush these record executives.

That’s CRAZY.

She had the “it” factor, and they blackballed her. They did it to so many of our talented sisters.

I was just talking about Hilda Simms not long ago and she suffered a similar fate in the 1950s, except they associated her with communism because she spoke out on some shit.

Lena Horne also took a similar L.

NOW THAT would be an incredible documentary.

RIP to such a beautiful young lady.

I remember analyzing the song fame in college. Our professor said he totally hated the song and it promoted suicide. The whole class was stunned then we asked where did it promote suicide. He said, she said “Fame I wanna live for ever, I wanna learn how to DIE”. We was like “I wanna learn how to FLY”. Professor had to sit down the rest of the class because his whole lesson for the day was based on “learn how to die”.

Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense but I just feel like you could say the bolded part in your post ("we need time to process what has happened and will share more in the future") and I believe the public will respect than just dropping such tragic news and saying I need privacy (shutting people off, then why announce it?). You don't need to fight rumors or anything.
The departed is a public figure, that's why it was announced to the world so fans can also mourn with the family.
I'll just leave it here as I just asked this question out of curiosity and not of any negative intent.

She was in a movie with Clint Eastwood AND Burt Reynolds!

I never heard of this movie until just today and found out that in the opening scene of the movie there was a stunt mishap and Burt Reynolds got hit in the face with a real chair instead of the fake chair and broke his jaw. This virtually ruined the movie and caused him to take 2 years off from acting to heal
