Palm Pre Owners Step This Way

List of undocumented changes

* Changed sound for notifications - You still can't change them yourself, but the new sound is much richer, if a little quieter
* Animated drop down menus - they look really slick and really change the experience. The Context menus also have some nice animation.
* Additional photo upload options - you can now upload a photo to either Facebook or Photobucket (not new - thanks commenters!)
* Lots of Photo app improvements. A more distinct bar between all photos and your albums in the photo app, plus they're calling the Screenshot album "Screen Captures." The preview thumbs also slide in from the right. Faster photo rendering. Overall the Photos app feels much more fully baked.
* Emailing Memos - The memo app now has a menu option to email a memo.
* A new font for the Browser - uses Palm's system font and, truly, it looks fantastic.
* Disabled the key combo in browser to open in a new card. Boo-urns.
* Javascript interpreter Performance upgrades - this will speed up virtually everything and is great news
* Sporadic reports of speed improvements both in the browser and system-wide, but it's always tough to know if these are real or just perceived
* Seems to have better Gmail handling - not failing when you tap on a notification for an email you'd already archived on the desktop
* A new icon for AIM
* more more more! If you find some, post in this thread and we'll update this list as they come in.
* More auto-complete / auto correct entries in the dictionary.
* With the slider open, the Center button now turns on the screen, where as before you had to hit a keyboard key or the power button.

Tethering via homebrew still works!

The Battle Continues: Palm Releases WebOS 1.1, Restores iTunes Media Syncing
Palm Releases WebOS 1.1, Restores iTunes Media Syncing

The cat-and-mouse game between Apple and Palm continues today with Palm's announcement that it has released webOS 1.1, bringing a host of new features and improvements to the Palm Pre including restoration of iTunes media syncing.Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That's right -- you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).
While the Palm Pre running webOS was initially able to sync directly with iTunes by presenting itself as an iPod, Apple disabled the functionality just last week with the release of iTunes 8.2.1. The iTunes syncing spat is the latest in a series of incidents between the two competitors, as Palm has hired several former Apple executives and engineers to lead the company's turnaround and Apple has issued veiled threats against Palm regarding intellectual property contained in iPhone that has appeared in similar forms in the Palm Pre.

The full list of new features available in webOS 1.1 can be found in Palm's release notes for the update.

so far so good with the update but I still want the option of changing my notification sounds.

Same here. I need a tone that is loud enough for me to know when I'm getting a text instead of reaching in my pocket only to find out I received a text an hour prior.

is anyone using that voice dialing?

shit thats all i was waiting for and they have it advertised on sprints site now

I was playing with an unlocked one today. Dude had it with Metro PCS, and it did everything my cousin's Pre does with Sprint (from what I saw). I am sure the d/l's are slower, but that OS would be awesome for any network.

For me as a UNIX admin, this is sweeeeeet:

pre-terminal_0.jpg

http://www.precentral.net/how-about-command-line-terminal-your-pre

once ssh'ng to other terminals is enabled...it would be a great tool to have like my tilt which I use regularly to ssh into servers I support

EDIT...ssh!:

ssh works from within the terminal. I don't know if it works from the initial screen, I know the ssh executable isn't in the path when the terminal first opens. I sudo su - username to the username I created when I rooted (root work too), and I was able to ssh to another server. The program is a bit quirky at this point for general use, but it's still very cool (and will come in handy for me).

Just got my phone in today.

Let me just state first, this phone is awesome!!! If you're a WindowsMobile user on Sprint, I feel sorry for you. The Pre shits on the Touch Pro is so many ways right now. Yes, there's a few things they can work on like custom sound notifications, more custumizations, more options... but just the fact I can type a text message/email with no problems is amazing to me. My Touch Pro had all kinds of lag and bugs when sliding the keyboard out. I'm not worried about what this phone lacks because atleast Palm does more updates then Microsoft will ever do.

I see I have some lag when I run tons of programs but nothing like Windows Mobile's lag. On my TP, If I was to play Pandora, surf the web, reply to texts, tweet on a 3rd party program... my shit woulda have locked up like no other.

The other option they need to work on is not having the AIM names in my contact book. I took off my AIM just so I don't have a bunch of random SNs floating around when searching for people.

... but other than that. Everything is fine. I haven't used the bluetooth but the wifi is good. The wifi on my Touch Pro would never connect with my home wireless network.

The Pre is by far the best phone on Sprint.

Big Big news today: there are now two new ways to install homebrew apps on your Palm Pre!

First up, the aptly-named "WebOS Quick Install" from our very own Jason Robitaille. It's a simple desktop Java-based app that you can download and install on a Mac, PC or Linux machine. First, install the webOS SDK, then you just need to put your Pre into Developer Mode and then run the app on your desktop (Mac users note the small caveat in the readme file). You can drag and drop files downloaded from our Homebrew Apps forum into the app, click install, and you. are. done.

Also new: Brian Jost, better known to us as PreGame, has created an on-device file download and ipk install tool! It's called "fileCoaster"and it works pretty well. All you need to do here is browse to the PreCentral.net Homebrew App Forums on your Pre. If you're logged in, there will be a text field box next to every .ipk attachment - just tap that, copy it, and paste it into this app. Voila - you are downloading and installing homebrew applications without needing the desktop. It works on both the full forums and the mobile version.

Oh, and did we mention that it will download files as well? It does. You just need to punch in the URL of the file and it should download itself into your downloads directly. So far we've tried it with images and MP3 files and it's working fine.

We have even more big changes coming in the Homebrew scene very soon, so keep your eyes peeled. Meanwhile, seems like it would be an awfully good idea to download the WebOS Quick Install app and use it to install fileCoaster.

Yesterday, the command line terminal. Today, new GUI installers both on device and on desktop. Tomorrow: the world! As always, these and all other homebrew apps are beta and so you're installing at your own risk.

Makk are you running homebrew apps on your Pre yet? I'm still on the cautious side when it comes to that right now to be honest.

dude, this is the first day I'm on my Pre and I already loaded homebrew apps... its very simple and doesn't require alot. From what i'm reading online, there's no harm for this. The homebrew apps you can delete off the phone like apps you get from the app store.

Aiight cool. What apps have you loaded so far?

BADDflashlight which is really bad. lol.

Chess

and Filecoaster, to load programs directly on the Pre instead of loading it through a desktop/laptop.
Did you initially load those apps through your pc or using the weblink provided above?

well to use filecoaster, you have to install /via the PC. once you have that program installed on the Pre, you can install the the isk files directly into the phone by downloading it with the filecoaster program .

Its this simple.

- install SDK on PC
- install WebOS Quick Install on PC
- Put phone in DEV mode with Konami Code
- Install Filecoaster isk file to the Pre with the WebOS Quick Install from the PC
- Now all programs you want for the Pre can be installed with the Filecoaster program. I also heard you can take the phone out of developer mode.

Are those apps compatibe with Vista-64bit? I think there were issues with Vista before but am not 100% on that.
