Palm Pre Owners Step This Way

What's New in Palm Pre Homebrew Apps: Chess, Package Tracking, and Much More
pre-chess.png

While we're still waiting for more than 30 apps to appear in the official webOS App Catalog, our own homebrew forums now has over fifty apps to play around with. They range from "Hello World" to a full-on chess app, and they're loads of fun.

With the official release of the Mojo webOS SDK to everybody, installing apps has gotten much simpler too. Both Mac and PC users simply need to

1. follow Palm's installation instruction for the SDK
2. Put the Pre into Developer Mode (oh yeah, there's an app for that so you don't have to punch in the Konami Code every time. Consider it your first install.)
3. Open up a command line terminal (it's not as scary as you think) and then use the palm-install command with the Pre plugged in to the computer (but not in USB mode). More here.

Windows users have another option. Forum member greg_roll has created a handy-dandy gui installer that is working for most people. You can find a great tutorial on how to use it at webosinternals.org.

Notice that URL - the Pre Dev Wiki is moving over to webosinternals.org and is looking good. If you want to start developing and delving into the nitty gritty of the webOS, the webosinternals team are the the go-to people. On that same subject, rwhitby has posted up an excellent article explaining that the webOS is so open that it's not technically accurate to say that you have 'rooted' your Pre -- all you're really doing is accessing the Linux core of webOS in a way that Palm actually allows.

Ok, enough nerdcore - let's talk apps. Here's a small sampling of what you can find in our Palm Pre Homebrew Apps Forum. Note that all of this stuff is essentially beta, so if there's trouble just head back into the thread and have a chat about it.

* WxRad Animated Radar - After seeing the official Pre Weather app did you think that the Pre could not show animated radar? Well it can! And it can be full screen! Check out what pilot adsllc has done in his spare time!
* Chess - rboatright has been incredibly active in the developer forums and still has had time to bring a first draft of Chess to the Pre!
* PrePackage - A package tracking app that works with FedEx, UPS, USPS, and DHL from Arcticus.
* Blocked - oil brings us this classic game where you need to slide the red block out of the box by moving the rest of the blocks around. It even includes a puzzle designer!

Damn these homebrew apps are making it tougher for me to hold back from installing them

Anyone get WebOS 1.1 installed on their phone yet? I just checked & it said my phone is up to date even though I'm running version 1.0.4:(

This article is so ironic

Clearly anybody who bought a Palm Pre was migrating from some other OS. So from whom did Palm poach the most users? If you were to ask the members of the PreCentral forum, a full 39% of them would say that they left behind a Windows Mobile handset. That’s more than any other mobile OS, even Palm’s own old-school Palm OS, which 28% of Pre owners used to use. Rounding it out was BlackBerry OS at 15%, iPhone OS at 6%, and Android, Symbian, and Sidekick each registering less than 1% on the meter. Ten percent of Pre owners used a different operating system, with most of those switching from non-smartphone handsets.

We're guessing a healthy portion of that WinMo segment include Windows Mobile Treos. Even so, it does look like, at least amongst our users, the Pre is managing to convert a sizable number of people to the platform.

dude... a micro usb cable is a micro usb cable. What you have to worry about is the power source beeing 1000ma. You can prolly get away with anything less but anything above might cause damage.

dude...I know this..but you're commenting on a convo you didn't even read. Mak had mentioned earlier in the thread that the the micro usb port on the touchstone was recessed a bit or something and that the cable he bought...fit it perfectly....I dont want to buy just any second cable only to find out it does not fit the touchstone perfectly.

got it?.....good

So I take it you already bought your Pre?

shit tell me about em - i got 18-20ft ceilings in the main part of the crib and 10-15ft everywhere else. This summer has been really mild down here. My office getz hot as fuck though and I bought one of those portable jammies until I decide on whether or not to just buy a bigger unit. my freon is almost tapped out cuz that shit stays on all day too. another $150 to get them to fill it back up :smh:

was the price on ebay good?

I wanna say I read where some cables didnt fit correctly.

Well its looking less and less likely by the second that there will be any 1.1 today....

Its in the works - yesterday as a release date was just a tip that proved to be wrong

anyone have keys on the pad where the light doesnt shine as bright on the different keys ? there is a plastic coating and when im typing it becomes depressed and the light is brighter on some parts than it is on others
does everyone have this or are my keys defective? The keys make a little noise too when I press them. Its all from the cover or whatever is on top of the lettering.

Sprint.com now says that the Pre has voice activated dialing. I hope that means that it will come with the 1.1 update.

I have no noise or problems with my keyboard. there is a very slight oreo effect on the phone, but no enough to make me take it back. If It hasnt been 30 days yet for you you can reeturn for a new Pre.

I am actually pretty well versed in hacking WM phones and adding software to do what I need it to do. In other words, I ain't new to this. BUT I am having the worst time trying to root my Pre!!!!:angry::angry:

I have followed the "simple" instructions to no avail. I love this phone but would like to be able to tether. Without sounding like the retarded kid in the room, can anyone help??

1.1 is in the house!! Downloading now!

webOS 1.1.0

Version information

  • Version: webOS 1.1.0
  • Release date: 23 July 2009
  • Configuration: Sprint 1.7
New applications

NFL Mobile Live from Sprint

  • Watch or listen to live NFL games right on your phone.
Feature changes to existing applications

Calendar

  • For Calendar accounts you create on your phone, the default reminder intervals are 15 minutes for timed events and one day for all-day events. A few notes:
    • This change applies only if software version 1.1 was on your phone when you bought it, or if you did a partial or full erase on your phone and signed in to your Palm profile again after updating to version 1.1. If you simply update your phone to software version 1.1, the default reminder intervals in Calendar do not change.
    • This change applies only to Calendar events you create on your phone, not to events that are synchronized to your phone from an online account.
Camera

  • The Photos application opens more quickly when launched from the camera.
Clock

  • Enhanced support for time zones in Clock.
  • When you set an alarm in Clock, an alarm icon appears in the notification area at the bottom of the screen. Tap the icon to display alarm details. Alarm details include the following:
    • If the alarm is set for the current day, the alarm time appears.
    • If the alarm is set for tomorrow, the alarm time and "Tomorrow" appear.
    • If the alarm is set for any day other than today or tomorrow, the day of the alarm appears.
Contacts

  • Friends added and deleted in Facebook on the web are now correctly added and deleted in the Facebook account in Contacts on the phone.
  • As soon as you create or makes changes to a Google contact on the phone, the phone begins a sync to reflect those changes in Google on the web.
Email

  • When you set up an Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) email account, you can enter the mail server name as an IP address.
  • Support for self-signed certificates with multiple common names has been added.
  • When you reply to an email in HTML format using an EAS account, the formatting of the sender's original message is now retained in the reply.
  • Palm's EAS implementation now supports several Exchange ActiveSync Policies, including the following:
    • PIN/Password Required. IT administrators can ensure a password is assigned to the phone. Administrators can also specify the minimum length of the password.
    • Inactivity timeout. IT administrators can ensure that an inactive phone goes into a locked state after a certain time period. You cannot set a higher timeout interval for your phone, but you can set a shorter interval.
    • Remote Wipe. IT Administrators can remotely erase all data on a phone from their Exchange console. IT administrators can also have the device wipe itself if an incorrect password is entered more than a specified number of times.
Messaging

  • You can enter emoticons in new text, multimedia, and instant messages. Emoticons also display in incoming messages.
  • If you set the phone to use a 24-hour time format, the message times shown in a conversation appear in 24-hour time.
  • If you go into an IM account's preferences, all the options are available even if you are signed in to the account. You can tap Remove Account to delete the account, enter a new password to update the password, or tap Sign In to sign in with your updated password. Previously, you needed to sign out of the account before you could use these preferences.
  • When you delete an IM account, a message now appears asking you to confirm that you want to delete the account.
Phone

  • When multiple missed call notifications are displayed on the dashboard, the time of the most recent missed call is shown.
  • When you slide the ringer switch off, a bell icon with a slash is displayed. Previously, the icon was a speaker with a slash.
  • In Phone Preferences, the Show Contact Matches preference is now turned on by default. When typing on the keyboard in the phone app, the phone automatically displays both the numbers being entered and any contact matches for the characters entered.
System

  • Improved functionality of person reminders. A person reminder is a notification that you create in a contact entry. The notification appears when you have a call or exchange an email, text, multimedia, or IM message with a contact.
  • Resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with latest version of iTunes (8.2.1).
  • When you enter a search term in Card view or the Launcher to perform a universal search, if you select the Wikipedia web search option, results are shown in the Wikipedia Mobile site instead of the Desktop site.
Web

  • You can now use symbols from the symbols table (Sym
    HW_Sym_icon_CasS09.gif
+ key) when you enter text into a web page dialog box.
  • If you have a page open at a certain zoom level, leave the page, and use the onscreen Back
    Web_Back_icon_CasS09.gif
button or the back gesture to return to the page, the zoom level is restored right away.
  • A new gesture is now available that works the same as the onscreen Forward
    Web_Forward_icon_CasS09.gif
button. To move forward through open web pages, make a short swipe left to right in the gesture area.
  • When using the Wikipedia drop-down search feature in the address bar, results are shown in the Wikipedia Mobile site instead of the Desktop site.
  • When you tap a link, the link appears highlighted to indicate it has been activated, even if it takes a moment for the linked page to open.
YouTube

  • After you enter search text, you can tap the Search
    Find_Icon_CasS09.gif
icon to perform a search. You still have the option of pressing Enter
    HW_Enter_icon_CasS09.gif
    to perform the search.
