OFFICIAL UFC 137 ===== Saturday, Oct. 29th - Vegas - Diaz / Penn / Kongo / Mitrione

Re: OFFICIAL UFC 137 ===== Saturday, Oct. 29th - Vegas - Diaz / Penn / Kongo / Mitri

gsp has the best takedowns in MMA and some of the best top control. also it's 100 times easier to defend against elite jiu jitsu then it is to actually submit someone with it. i see gsp taking him down every round and staying on top for a pretty easy decision victory.

Re: OFFICIAL UFC 137 ===== Saturday, Oct. 29th - Vegas - Diaz / Penn / Kongo / Mitri

GSP vs. Silva is the Holy Grail of MMA future fights. :wepraise:
GSP will fake his own death before he gets in there with Silva. Especially after he sees Sonnen...with his superior wrestling..get his ass knocked the fuck out in the rematch.

Re: OFFICIAL UFC 137 ===== Saturday, Oct. 29th - Vegas - Diaz / Penn / Kongo / Mitri

Those were two guys on the down side of their careers or certainly not getting any better and GSP was coming into his own. He knows in his heart if he makes a mistake one of these young hungry dudes will knock him the fuck out. So he stays gameplanned up and very precise with safety first. The fans will turn on him soon..maybe not Canada, but even if Diaz is hardcore, you are not a fan of the sport if you don't like to watch him fight.

Definitely seeing the shift here in Canada. Fans have already begun turning on dude. They were impressed by his JABBING clinic in December 2010, but completely unimpressed with April 2011 against Shields. Definitely a polarizing figure now ... and he'd quell the frustration with fans if he could finish someone. Definitely wished he could have submitted Hardy in March 2010. Hardy was like Gumby in there and toughed it out with Georges trying to take his arm off.

If he went hard for the finish at least once every fight like he did against Hardy he would get nothing but love. Shit..every fight he is facing the number 2 guy in the world so you can't blame him for not finishing every fight..it's just that he is not out for blood and that shit gets old quick.

Exactly, bro. It's one thing to be in command of your opponents ... but enough with the 50-45 wins. People want submissions, TKOs, KOs, or complete ownage. People are beginning to feel as though it's just point earning ... compared to someone like Diaz who goes balls to the wall and wears people down (looking to finish them) and getting in harm's way in the process.

Re: OFFICIAL UFC 137 ===== Saturday, Oct. 29th - Vegas - Diaz / Penn / Kongo / Mitri

I think you almost have it right...What GSP will most likely do is do just enough to score points and get up or let the ref stand them up...just to take him down again..score pussy shots...rinse, wash, repeat..decision victory. He won't want to stay on the ground too long. It is different because this time he will be for certain that he can't finish his opponent. Diaz does have one advantage that the others didn't have..the height and reach. He could throw from long distance, avoid the shot and cruise like GSP plans to do.

Nah, you want to be on the feet as least as possible when fighting a better striker.The areas where GSP is most vulnerable is on the feet and in transition from the feet to a takedown.GSP would be foolish to willingly let him back up and will fight him exactly like he did BJ.If he didn't let BJ up, then he won't willingly let Nick(a much more dangerous striker) up.One thing I saw on the feet in this fight is that BJ circled towards Diaz's power hand and was pretty successful with that.He got in trouble when he stopped circling and started staying still and then going back.I think will do the same thing.He will circle to Diaz'z left then shoot double legs.

Re: OFFICIAL UFC 137 ===== Saturday, Oct. 29th - Vegas - Diaz / Penn / Kongo / Mitri

Spider et al,

Do you think the UFC will pull a powermove and bump Condit out of the contender spot and bring Diaz in against GSP first off in 2012, or does Diaz get another fight between then and now (or just wait for the winner of GSP / Condit)?

Unfortunately, a live post-fight press conference stream for “UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz” will not be made available. Clearly, the next best thing is a live blog hosted by yours truly.

Nick Diaz defeated BJ Penn in the card’s featured contest. Not only did Diaz leave the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada victorious, but he also may have retired Penn in the process.

For complete results of UFC 137, check out our play-by-play coverage HERE.

We’ll be blogging the presser’s key points live, so please keep refreshing this page for the latest news:

Penn was taken to the hospital and did not attend the press conference.

According to UFC president Dana White (Pictured), 10,313 fans packed the arena, garnering $3.9 million at the gate.

White: Diaz is a real fighter and people like real fighters. He’s the real deal.

Not sure if Diaz’s personality is good for the sport, but he just wants Nick to be Nick.

White giving Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic props on his career. It’s a young man’s game.

White not sure if Penn will still retire.

White didn’t get to talk to Cro Cop or Penn. CC was upset and Penn straight to hospital.

Dana just said he has a special announcement to make, but won’t do it until Diaz gets here. Hmm … GSP???

Nelson wanted to shave his beard to give media something to talk about on Monday.

“Big Country” refuses to reveal how he lost his weight or why he kept everything a secret leading up to today.

Cerrone still wants to fight Nam Phan at featherweight, but he isn’t leaving 155.

Hioki wasn’t sure if he won the 3rdRound, he admits he could have lost the decision.

Kongo says Cain Velasquez got lucky in their first meeting because he took it on short notice and didn’t have his legs. It’s been five years and would like a rematch. He said it respectfully, though.

Diaz still isn’t here and White says the NSAC is still waiting for him to submit his post-fight drug test.

Nelson didn’t worry about his two-fight losing streak entering the bout. He just wanted to give it his all.

Diaz is in the house!

Diaz thinks he put on a poor performance. He didn’t fight a smart fight. He wasn’t 100 percent today. He went through hard times leading up to this scrap.

Diaz’s right eye is BUSTED UP.

White said he’s happy with Diaz’s performance and though the fight was amazing.

Diaz did everything he was supposed to do, but he didn’t feel good about it. Diaz says it was hard to find sparring partners because they aren’t compensated enough, and he understands.

Diaz says Penn was never his idol, but he just liked his style.

Diaz admitted that he had to find something to fight BJ about.

He says he wasn’t motivated for this fight because he was cool with Penn in the past.

Diaz wasn’t as motivated because he didn’t figth Georges St-Pierre like he was supposed to. That’s why is face is so battered.

He says GSP should want to fight the Strikeforce champ and unify the titles. But he admits he’s “not important” enough.

Diaz says GSP is a good fighter and a good role model.

White: GSP is pissed and thinks Diaz is the most disrespectful fighter ever. He wants to put on the worst beating on him.

It’s on: GSP vs. Diaz on Super Bowl weekend.

Carlos Condit agreed to step aside and will compete on the same card.

Diaz is clearly pumped.

Diaz is now saying the stoppage on Jake Shields (vs. Jake Ellenberger) was bad.

:angry: - they better not.

Diaz should let his body rest. I remmeber him talking about Strikeforce making him fight tough fights back to back. Also, he cuts easy and this break should help. Unlike MANY practitioners of combat, he does NOT get out of shape in between bouts. He also spars with boxer Andre Ward when not fighting. No wonder his boxing os good.

Yup.Its all about money and the people want to see Diaz vs GSP.From a business standpoint it would be foolish to risk GSP loosing or getting hurt.Condit was a replacement anyway.Personally I think Condit is a really good fighter but the average fan doen'st know about him and don't find him interesting.They should have stuck with him fighting BJ.

Props on the update H-Funk.

I just hope Condit gets a freebie as he is always put in with rough customers.

Diaz is a very live underdog vs. GSP--a true master in the Octagon.

Thats what I think also good wrestling > good Jiu Jitsu most of the time. If the wrestler has basic Jiu Jitsu skills. What people fail to realize is GSP has ran threw more than a few guys who were considered good on the ground. I think GSP beats Diaz(But he better not get cought slipping).

I really hope not. Silva gains nothing by getting drawn into another fight with this racist who was on steroids and was still FINISHED when they fought. Chael had is biggest chance ever when they fought before and he blew it.

Re: OFFICIAL UFC 137 ===== Saturday, Oct. 29th - Vegas - Diaz / Penn / Kongo / Mitri

y'all gonna stop disrespecting bj penn. the first fight with frankie edgar he won, the second one he did lose no question & he was in a wrestlefuck session with john fitch. other than that, this dude has been on the pound for pound lists for years. who is this world class talent that diaz was beating in strikeforce? frank shamrock? come on son.

mitrione is gonna get punched in the nuts, but he'll win

big country is gonna retire cro cop

donald cerrone is gonna put in work. sidenote, how dope would it be if they had a roundrobin tournament of donald cerrone, joe lauzon, nate diaz & anthony pettis where they all had to fight each other over 4-5 events with the winner getting a title shot? :yes:

jorgensen is gonna strangle that kid

ehhh, that's why i don't bet sports. good card

Yeah man it doesn't make any sense. Silva himself has said Sonnen doesn't deserve another shot and I totally agree. This corny muthafucka got subbed and looked like he was in a car accident post fight whereas Silva looked like he just finished a sparring session. Chael is a legend in his own mind only.

Shit is definitely gonna be interesting. Although Georges hasn't finished off dudes in recent years ... we all saw the beatings he put on the likes of Fitch and Koscheck (2008 and 2010) respectively with pretty much all stand-up. Hooks / straights / Supermans on Fitch in Aug. '08 ... and a clinic of jab work on Kos' in Dec' '10. Hopefully he can show more of his arsenal (like he did with Hardy and Alves) as we all know Diaz brings it fight-in, fight-out. Hell ... look at how busted up he looks in that press conference clip there ^ ... and he was DOMINATING Penn for most of the 15 mins. We respect dude 'cuz he goes in there and scraps. Trades with his opposition ... doesn't mind getting rocked, as he's there to rock the person squaring up with him.

Feb. 2012 ... should be fun :yes:

Nick Diaz ($200,000), B.J. Penn ($150,000), Cheick Kongo ($140,000) and Brandon Vera ($120,000) were the top earners at this past weekend's UFC 137 event.

Overall, the 22 fighters who competed on the card earned purses totaling $1,026,000.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today requested and received the list of disclosed paydays from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

UFC 137 took place this past Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The night's main card aired on pay-per-view, and the preliminary card aired on Spike TV and streamed on Facebook.

The full payouts included:

Nick Diaz: $200,000 (no win bonus)
def. B.J. Penn: $150,000

Cheick Kongo: $140,000 (includes $70,000 win bonus)
def. Matt Mitrione: $10,000

Roy Nelson: $40,000 (includes $20,000 win bonus)
def. Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic: $75,000

Scott Jorgensen: $33,000 (includes $16,500 win bonus)
def. Jeff Curran: $8,000

Hatsu Hioki: $30,000 (includes $15,000 win bonus)
def. George Roop: $8,000

Donald Cerrone: $54,000 (includes $27,000 win bonus)
def. Dennis Siver: $27,000

Bart Palaszewski: $20,000 (includes $10,000 win bonus)
def. Tyson Griffin: $34,000

Brandon Vera: $120,000 (includes $60,000 win bonus)
def. Eliot Marshall: $15,000

Ramsey Nijem: $20,000 (includes $10,000 win bonus)
def. Danny Downes: $5,000

Francis Carmont: $12,000 (includes $6,000 win bonus)
def. Chris Camozzi: $8,000

Clifford Starks: $12,000 (includes $6,000 win bonus)
def. Dustin Jacoby: $6,000

Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income. They also do not include any other "locker room" or special bonuses the UFC oftentimes pays. They also do not include portions of the pay-per-view revenue that some top-level fighters receive.

For example, as previously reported, UFC officials handed out additional $75,000 UFC 137 bonuses to Palaszewski ("KO of the Night"), Cerrone ("Submission of the Night"), and Diaz and Penn ("Fight of the Night").

In other words, the above figures are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not reflect entire compensation packages for the event.
