Official Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Discussion (12/1/17 @8PM)

Post Mortem: S.H.I.E.L.D. Bosses Talk Skye's 'Glorious' Moment,
's Death, Raina's Fate and More
ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with its Season 2 winter finale not only gave Skye a (famous) name, it also introduced to the series an exciting element of Marvel lore – one that will even be the basis for its own 2018 movie.

Oh, the Inhumanity!

In the wake of the episode’s big data dumps, TVLine invited showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen to connect the dots, confirm some “tweaks” made to certain origin stories and preview the impact of that one tragic loss.

TVLINE | You sneaks. You used the “Daisy Bell” song last week….

MAURISSA TANCHAROEN | We sure did…. It was interesting to read people who keyed into that. A few people did.

TVLINE | Was there any debate in the room about possibly tipping your hand a week early?

JED WHEON | It was [Marvel TV chief] Jeff Bell’s idea to have that be the nursery rhyme. In talking about it, we decided that as long as it was placed in a way that … you’d have to know the song and be listening for it and singing the lyrics along in your head to really get it, we figured it was a reward for those who could go that far.

TANCHAROEN | We were also hoping that the dream sequence that you’re watching as it plays would sort of detract attention.

RELATEDABC Schedules Agent Carter Premiere, Return Dates for Once and Shonda Shows

TVLINE | Was the Daisy Johnson identity in place from Day 1, or did you go back and forth on a couple of different possibilities over the past season-and-a-half?

WHEDON | We knew that we wanted to do it fairly early on, but there’s obviously an approval process within Marvel…. We knew that Skye was going to discover these secrets about her parents and uncover something along these lines. So for about a year-and-a-half we knew that this is where we’d go with it.

TANCHAROEN | We and the entire writing staff are big fans of [the Marvel comics series] Secret Warriors, and I think that’s pretty clear in this show. So when we were given permission to move forward with Daisy Johnson, we were very excited.

TVLINE | But given Daisy’sSHIELD_Burst origin story [per Marvel lore, she’s the daughter of supervillain Calvin Zabo aka Mister Hyde and a prostitute], does this mean Skye is not an Inhuman, as some had speculated?

WHEDON | The origin of Daisy in the comics is different from what we are doing here. We are introducing two different concepts at the same time. One is her origin….

TANCHAROEN | We’re blending and merging. We’re doing our own spin to it, as we have done in the past, taking things that have existed in the Marvel universe and sort of fitting it into our mythology.

WHEDON | Partially that comes from the story evolving on film [in the Marvel Cinematic Universe], but also from the fact that there are so many fans who know these stories so far in and out, if you don’t change a little bit….

TVLINE | So if I had phrased my question, “Is Skye an Inhuman?”, your answer would have been….

WHEDON | Yes.

TANCHAROEN | Yes, she is.

TVLINE | How will this twist activate Skye as a character, moving forward?

TANCHAROEN | What we’ve set up for a season-and-a-half is the origin of a superhero.

WHEDON | And we know from how it went down [in the winter finale] that she doesn’t necessarily know what’s happening. She won’t necessarily know what caused what. And all of it will be tied to a very sad event in losing a dear, dear friend [Agent Tripp, killed by an obelisk shard]. It’ll be a complex journey; it’s not going to be all fun and games.

TANCHAROEN | Connecting Tripp’s death to the beginnings of her power is a very complicated journey for her, from here on out.

TVLINE | What should we be reading in her expressions during that final sequence?

TANCHAROEON | It’s a mix of many things. When she bursts through the [shell], I think it’s one of the most glorious moments we’ve had on the show. She looks so heroic and beyond awesome. And then to have her eyes land on Tripp as he crumbles to the ground, to see those tears forming…. Again, very complicated.

TVLINE | Has Raina Agents of SHIELD Skye Inhumanbeen distinctly affected by the transformation as well?

WHEDON | She may have been changed. You glimpsed a little bit of what may have happened to her [at right], but in the very next episode we learn exactly what happened.

TANCHAROEN | We know that Raina and Skye have similarities. We seem them both go through the [Terrigen] mist…. Raina absolutely thinks they have a connection are and destined for the same thing. How Raina transforms, you will see in the back half of our season.

TVLINE | Was another of the tweaks you made to the origin of Skye’s mother? That doesn’t quite match up with Marvel lore, either.

TANCHAROEN | Yes, that’s an original take as well – but pulling from elements that exist.

TVLINE | Will you be getting into the nature of Cal’s powers at some point?

WHEDON | As other characters learn things, so will the audience. Any questions left unanswered will be answered. The exact extent of what he can do or whether or not he has powers himself, we’ll get into that.

TANCHAROEN | We absolutely love the character. He is so much fun to write, because of what Kyle [MacLachlan] has brought to the table. We will explore that character as much as we possibly can.

TVLINE | Was a tiny part of you tempted to let Whitehall live, just so you could have a scene where Cal rips him apart? I know that I kind of wanted that scene.

WHEDON | [Laughs] We all wanted that – no one more than Cal.

TANCHAROEN | His life has been full of so many disappointments, we added another one to the long list.Agents of SHIELD Skye Inhuman

TVLINE | Very possibly silly question, but in the post-credits scene, the man with no eyes — was that Reed Diamond (who plays Whitehall)?

TANCHAROEN | He does look very similar to Reed Diamond, but no, it’s an actor named Jamie Harris (Turn, Kingdom). And you will learn his character’s name pretty soon.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.': Latest victim speaks out

Being the hero doesn’t always pay off.

Agent Antoine Triplett (B.J. Britt) learned that the hard way during Tuesday’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after going back into the city to save Skye (Chloe Bennet). Unfortunately, he paid the price for his heroism when he got caught in the temple just as the Obelisk seemingly petrified Skye and Raina (Ruth Negga). Trip destroyed the crystals from the Obelisk, but was petrified himself in the process. When Skye shook off her transformation, the quaking of the temple caused Trip to crumble—so yes, he’s really dead. EW caught up with Britt to find out how it all went down below. (Read our interview with the showrunners to get the scoop on what’s next.)

EW: When did you find out Trip was actually going to die?

B.J. BRITT: Nooo! I don’t want to die. [Laughs]. I found out a week prior to getting the script that Trip was going to die. We don’t get the scripts ahead of time, we always find out what’s going to happen in the next episode when we show up at the table read, or maybe a day before the table read. I remember it like it was yesterday. I just finished a scene at the end of the day, and I was back to my trailer, and they said, “Hey, B.J.! Producers want to see you at the office.” My stomach just dropped and I was like, “Oh, hell.” So then I’m like, don’t freak out, it might be an arc, keeping my spirits up. You get the butterflies in your stomach. Then I walked up to the office and all the producers were there and it was like, “Oh hell….how does he die?” I knew it; I just knew it when they were all there. They were like “B.J., we’re sorry, so sorry…” They told me ahead of time, which I’m very, very grateful for, because I didn’t want to show up to the table read and find out there. As soon as I left, they told the rest of the cast and everybody started calling me and texting me.

What was your last day like on set?

Tears. Tears. A bunch of tears from just everybody. You never realize how close you get to the cast and to the crew until you find out you’re not going to be there every week. On the last day, everybody came down. When I walked out onto the stage, everybody was there, just showing me so much love, everybody claps, and there was waterworks. At the table read, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. We knew what was going to happen at the end for Trip. We just kept reading and Clark looks up at me and he just comes over and gives me a hug, right in the middle of the table read, and it’s like, “Is Clark really trying to make me cry right now?” When we get to the very end when everyone claps and whatever, Clark says, “I think this would be a really good time for a big cast hug,” and everybody comes over and we hug, one big group hug and everything. I kept it together, I was good! I was real good! I opened my mouth and I was like, “Hey everyone, I just want to thank you so much [crying noises].” Then it just went downhill from there and everyone started to cry.

There’s so much love on that show. As an actor, it’s very rare to find so much love, not only among the actors, but at the top with the producers and the writers and the cast and the crew. Everybody just has fun and we have fun, but we also know we have to get the job done. It makes work that much better, it makes work that much more fun. When you have a job like that, you don’t feel like it’s a job like, “Hey, I’m going to hang out with my friends today. I’m going to kick it with them.” That’s exactly how it felt, that’s another reason why it hurt so much. You see these people on a daily basis and now it’s like, “OK, now I won’t see them until we have a BBQ or maybe if someone has like, a holiday party or something.” It just sucked because I miss them so much. They are so wonderful.

Even though his story is cut short, are you glad he went out a hero?

I’m not glad he went out at all [Laughs]. You know what? I think they did an amazing job of how they let him go out. When he came in on the show, no one knew what his job was. Is he Hydra? From day one, Trip has always been a straightforward guy. Trip has shown his courage and leadership as part of the team. Like, I’m glad that Trip saw Skye starting to turn, and without thinking, Trip is like, “This thing has to go. This thing has to go.” I’m glad that they let him go out the way that he did. That made me feel good. It’s going to hurt, regardless. I feel like the fans are going to be hurt. Even when I watched it, I was hurt when Trip died. I was like a big kid coming to work everyday, getting to invest in this whole Marvel universe. I became just as attached to the character as the fans did. It hurts me just as much as it’s going to hurt the fans.

How do you think Trip’s death with resonate with Skye in particular since she’s partially at fault?

Trip and Skye are friends. Their bond started to grow even more and get even stronger. When I ran into the temple, she was even like, “No, what are you doing, get out!” She’s strong herself, she doesn’t need Trip, but Trip is like, “I got to get her out of here.” If the tables were reversed, I would feel the exact same way. I hope that the audience will see that as well. This wasn’t something that she wanted to happen. I think right then, I was defending Skye. She would have my back like would have her back.

A lot of the fans liked the dynamic between Trip and Simmons. Are you sad that you didn’t get to explore what could have been between those two characters?

It would have been interesting to see where that would have went. I don’t think the FitzSimmons fans would appreciate it [Laughs]. But, I would have loved to see his interaction with any of them. Who knows, maybe Trip would have gotten with Raina? We don’t know. It just hurts. You want to see where Trip could go. In my eyes, I felt it was cut short. Of course, the writers have a timeline for everything.

Is there a chance we could see you come back on the show, maybe via flashback?

That would be great. You might want to talk to the writers and producers about that right now. If you could call them, that would be amazing. You never know, like they say, “When you die in the Marvel universe, are you really dead?” Who knows. Right now, Trip is as dead as he could be.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Tuesday, March 3 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

They haven't realized yet they you can have more than one black character on a TV show and still get ratings.

'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' to feature a tie-in to 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

AGENTS-OF-SHIELD.jpg

It should come as no surprise that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will soon feature some sort of tie-in to The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

After all, following that big reveal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, S.H.I.E.L.D. picked up the thread that Hydra had infiltrated its ranks. There was even a small crossover with Thor: The Dark World when the agents were tasked with cleaning up the movie’s aftermath. And the big blue alien that saved Coulson (Clark Gregg) was Kree—so that sort of counts as a Guardians of the Galaxy tie-in, right?

Now EW can exclusively reveal that the ABC series will connect to the highly anticipated Avengers sequel. “You should expect something,” executive producer Jed Whedon says. “The Avengers is the big tent that all the franchises play under. Obviously, we’re included in that.”

While it’s unclear how the series will tie in to Marvel’s big blockbuster, this probably won’t be as big a crossover as the Winter Soldier once. “I don’t think any movie has the potential to impact us in the way that Captain America 2 did,” executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen says, “but there will be connections.”

probably will have RDJ appear at the beginning and the end of whatever episode, but only as Stark

Yea mac is the man 1 of them didn't have to die. Nobody had to die.

Australian actor and “Tomorrow People” star Luke Mitchell will on “Agents of SHIELD” play Lincoln, an “Inhuman” who helps Skye understand “the true extent of her transformation.”

In the comics, the Inhumans were created millions of years ago by the extraterrestrial Kree race in an attempt to build supersoldiers capable of defeating the Kree’s insterstellar enemy, the Skrulls.

After the dwarf ice giant Loki mortally wounded Phil Coulson (Skye’s boss at SHIELD) in Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers,” SHIELD director Nick Fury ordered bodily fluids from a very, very old Kree corpse be used to heal Coulson.

The Kree fluids inside Coulson caused him (and other recipients of the Kree Juice) to draw blueprints depicting an ancient Kree city beneath San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It was in this ancient underground city that Skye (aka Daisy Johnson aka Quake) was transformed into an Inhuman by Kree technology.

(In the comics, Daisy Johnson is an earthquake-generating SHIELD agent, but she has never been identified as an Inhuman.)

Lincoln and Daisy/Skye will help set the stage for the 2018 “Inhumans” movie announced in October by Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege.

“Agents of SHIELD” retakes ABC’s “Agent Carter” timeslot March 3.

Drea De Matteo is Headed to 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

Things won't be easy for the Agents when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns in March. Marvel has announced that Drea De Matteo will guest on the show as Karla Faye Gideon, a "gifted woman with a grudge to bear against S.H.I.E.L.D. De Matteo is known for her role as Adriana La Cerva in The Sopranos as well as Sons of Anarchy.

To make things worse, the character will be teaming with Skye's father.

“We’re thrilled to have Drea join us as yet another great villain to challenge our cast,” said Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “We relished the opportunity to work with her in such a menacing role.”
The character has briefly appeared in Marvel's DAREDEVIL: REDEMPTION limited series.

This announcement follows the previous news of Luke Mitchell who will play an Inhuman named Lincoln along with Edward James Olmos playing the mysterious Robert Gonzales.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 ET/PT on ABC.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Promotes Adrianne Palicki to Series Regular

Adrianne Palicki is officially a part of Team Coulson.

As revealed in the press release for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s midseason premiere — now titled “Aftershocks,” and airing March 3 — Palicki has been promoted to series regular status.

The Friday Night Lights alum made her debut as Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse in late October.

ABC’s full synopsis for “Aftershocks” appears below:

After discovering an alien city with ties to his resurrection, Coulson and his team destroyed it before the forces of Hydra could claim its secrets, eliminating the villainous Whitehall in the process. But new threats to the world have arisen, including Skye’s father, Cal, who now seeks retribution against Coulson for stealing his revenge against Whitehall; a disturbing alliance between former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Ward and Agent 33; the enigmatic Raina, who struggles with her transformation into something inhuman by the alien Obelisk and seeks vengeance; and Skye, who developed mysterious new powers from the Obelisk but whose lack of experience with her new abilities may threaten the safety of those she loves.
Meanwhile, Bobbi and Mack begin the next phase of a plan which seems to have grave repercussions for Coulson and his team, who are unaware that there’s another mysterious force moving against them. And as Hunter is forced to make the biggest choice of his life, Coulson will find his mission threatened by this shocking endgame.

In the midseason premiere, “Aftershocks,” Coulson’s team must deal with the consequences of their war with Hydra as shocking revelations threaten to tear them apart, and Hydra makes a dangerous move that may involve a traitor in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s midst.

Anyone know where I can download the episodes from this past season so I can binge watch them again before Tuesday's midseason return?

This show is a perfect example of how much the old tv model of mid-season finale / May sweeps is more hurtful than helpful for a show these days.
I remember being really into the second season during the last part of last year, but the show has been off tv for so long that I COMPLETELY forgot about it.
Thank goodness someone bumped this thread, otherwise I wouldn't even have known that it's coming back next week.

The same thing happened with the first season. I was really into the first half, then the mid-season break took so long that I forgot about it and didn't even remember it was a thing until Winter Solider came out .... in April

It got good to me in the middle of the first when they introduced Lorelei
But so far I've enjoyed the second more

I thought the first season was erratic and uneven, like two fighters feeling each other out. Season two was like they found the range and started landing. Let's see where it goes. At least the story-lines are becoming more mature and complex.

AAOU...man, I don't think the theaters can hold all the people wanna see that shit. Gonna be on some Star Wars shit.
