***Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread***

Good bbc article on the world cup and Ghana:
In our series of viewpoints from African journalists, Ghanaian Elizabeth Ohene reflects on a painful end to her country's hopes of World Cup glory.

I'm reading that Suarez is going around saying that he INTENTIONALLY punched the ball. Intentional or not, if that motherfucker never lifted his hands, that would've been a fucking goal. Barring some major fuck up, the Netherlands gonna get in that ass tomorrow.

US fans are fucking hypocrites too. Alot of them saying that what Suarez did was FAIR. I bet you if it was the US team that experienced the Suarez handball, they would of bitched like there was no tomorrow. Gyan was supposed to make that penalty, yes. But, that ball was supposed to go into the fucking goal as well.

It was obvious that he intentionally punched the ball. Gyan should have made the penalty kick, but to me....that is the equivalent of a outfielder throwing his glove in the air and knocking a homerun all off trajectory to make it a foul ball.... the equivalent of intentionally goaltending in basketball.... would be like a defender in the NFL throwing his helmet to block a field goal attempt... :smh::smh::smh: in all three cases, that action would not negate the field goal, homerun, or basket and the points would be awarded.

I think that is one rule that should possibly be reevaluated...an OBVIOUS intentional handball in that situation should be a goal...

Uruguay got REWARDED for cheating....

While this is true of ESPN and some of the big American media outlets, most of the us focused football boards have been crucifying Suarez like the British media and everyone else for that matter. However, you are 100% right that had something like this happened to the US people would be losing their minds. Ill go further and posit that had an African player done the same thing, it would not be seen as a cerebral move (as some are trying to spin it) but as straight up cheating.

Same shit I immediately thought. If an African player had done that,he would have been crucified...

Sad, but so true.

In terms of Suarez. Even if Gyan made the penalty, he still should be punished in one way or another.

Even though he was born in France, look at what the media did to Thierry Henry. The media, including ESPN, they crucified the man, they even drove him to the point of wanting to leave Europe to play in the MLS.

They crucified the man. What Suarez did was 10 times worse than what Henry did. If Henry did what Suarez did against a team like England, Germany, Netherlands, US, The media would probably not rest until the man killed himself.

I'm on most of the U.S. Soccer forums, and I haven't seen anyone justifying Suarez's nonsense. Shit like that is detrimental to the overall sport of football and it's pathetic how Ghana was eliminated at the "hands of Suarez." Anyone who plays football in the parks to the pros knows that that shit is intentional and you clearly know what you're doing.

The shit should be like goaltending in the NBA. Automatic score.

Don't like it? Don't do it.

Cosign... that is a perfect example and that was just a qualifying game... this Saurez shit was to appear in the world cup semis and would have ended the game :smh::smh:

I hear what you are saying, but the rules are the rules. Both Ghana and Uruguay knew what them going in. Under the rules, Uruguay won. Case closed.

Let me just say I'm not trying to defend the shit, just offering a different view.....I know ppl would be quick to say I'm taking his side.

I think the reason that he's not getting as crucified is because Ghana had a chance to redeem themselves but failed.

When Henry handled the ball and helped France qualify over Ireland, there was no penalty issued to Ireland nor did the match go into a shootout. Ghana was immediately issued the ball @ the spot and Gyan directed the ball straight to the crossbar. Then it was penalty kicks and Ghana couldn't get it done there. Ghana had opportunities for redemption, Ireland didn't.

Now I hope, and do expect, the Dutch to beat their ass tmrw.

No doubt. We know the rules and you cant go back and change it...but that shit is ridiculous. There is a long list of things like that in the world cup and that kind of makes it what it is.... but still...I hate to see cheaters benefit...especially when that was an extra-time goal... that would have officially ended the game.... but Ghana has a young team..they will be back in 2014 better than this year...

Yeah. I get your point. Lots of people kept saying that IF Gyan made the PK, which he should have, this wouldnt have even been an issue...which is true..

Completely agreed, and I hope that the teams that have been honest, Germany, Ghana, England and France, will make a stink. 3 of the 4 teams in the semi finals cheated to get there and it is not right.

Cristiano Ronaldo paid a surrogate mother to have his son, it was claimed yesterday as the mystery surrounding his shock fatherhood announcement grew.
According to a Portuguese newspaper, this is the reason why the £180,0000-a-week footballer said he was to have sole custody of the child.
It is believed the mother is an American woman who has asked not to be identified.

New father, new girlfriend: Mystery surrounds Christiano Ronaldo's new baby son - whether the baby is the result of a fling or a surrogate mother - and there are also conflicting reports about how his girlfriend Irina Shayk is taking the news
After Ronaldo, 25, made the announcement on his website over the weekend it was claimed the baby was born as a result of a fling, and the woman had been paid to stay anonymous.
But Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias has now claimed the baby was conceived with a surrogate mother at the end of last summer in San Diego, where the Real Madrid star was on holiday.
A spokesman for Ronaldo's management company Gestifute confirmed he had become a father but refused to comment on the surrogacy claims.
He was said to have flown home to Portugal to see the baby as soon as the national team was knocked out of the World Cup.
Ronaldo, who had a poor campaign with the Portuguese national side, left South Africa last week after his team was beaten by Spain in the last 16.
In the early hours of Sunday the former Manchester United player wrote on the internet: 'It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become a father to a baby boy.

He's the Daddy: The footballer's Facebook and Twitter pages carried the news
'As agreed with the baby's mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship.'
There were also reports yesterday that the person most surprised by the news was the footballer's latest in a long string of glamorous girlfriends - Russian underwear model Irina Shayk, 24.
According to a Facebook page in her name she knew nothing of the birth and had been left in tears by her boyfriend's announcement. A spokesman for Miss Shayk later denied she had said anything of the sort, and said the Facebook page was a fake.
The couple enjoyed a day out together in new York City on Sunday. 'Tthey're trying to create a relationship,' the spokesman added.
The footballer's sister Katia Aveiro was a little more forthcoming. Speaking at her home in Vilamoura on the Algarve in Portugal, she said the baby - reportedly born weighing 9lbs 8oz on June 17 - had made her brother 'very happy'.
The child is now said to be in the care of other members of Ronaldo's family in Vilamoura, including his mother Dolores.
In a recent interview the star had been asked if he wanted to have children. He replied that the day might come 'sooner rather than later'.

People are acting like no other player wouldn't do the same thing in the same situation...

If there is people to blame, it is FIFA and the officials, not the players. Players just take advantage of their ineptitude.

His country is in the semi final of the world cup; if they win, and go to the finals, he will be back to try and help them become the champions. In his country, he is a hero..

Stood up to FIFA for what reason. Nigeria's idea was ridiculous

Their idea was very good. Enough is enough. The players need to know that mediocrity is not acceptable. The difference between Ghana on one hand, Nigeria/ Cameroon on the other, is desire. Ghana are hungry and want to win. Nigeria just want to go through the motions. The Nigerian players have developed the same entitlement mentality Cameroon began to manifest in 2002 when they refused to play. Fuck them. Jonathan should have stood his ground and fired every single motherfucker except Odemwingie and Enyaema. From there, he should have recruit the juniors and let those Obafemi Martenses rot in Europe.

It is a mentality that has pervaded Southern Europe and Spanish speaking Latin America for a long long long long time, starting with the dirty win by Argentina in 1978, and is now creeping to north in Europe, starting with Henry scoring with his hand, and now the nonsense by Robben.

Unfortunate. Not sure about these viruses. I'm on a mac.

Fucking Uruguay man. They are dropping most of their players to the back. I bet they gonna play like this for 120 minutes (if Netherlands doesn't score first) hoping to get this shit to Penalties.

Penalty shoot outs can take away from the game in terms of influencing tactics. Uruguay knows they can't play free, so they gonna dedicate the majority of the game to defending, hoping for some breaks, but focusing to take it to penalties because they know that is their only shot.
