***Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread***

I think Germany will handle them. Ive been saying since the beginning of the tournament that Germany looked like the most complete team. Spain barely got by Paraguay the other day....while Germany completely dismantled Argentina and that wasnt even the first team they blew out like that...

Germany has played the most entertaining football of the world cup. Scored the most goals.

They have easily demonstrated the most outstanding wing play as well.

even in the match they lost to Serbia, where they were a man down due to a red card, they looked the better team.

Their counterattacks are FURIOUS.

Their corner kicks are probing.

Football is played on the day but Germany looks really good

But if they met Brazil, even the one which was knocked out, I would put my money on Brazil. Unfortunately, you will not convince me that Bastien Schweinsteiger is a midfield destroyer. What Germany have benefitted from is scoring the first goal. In a knockout game, it changes the entire equation because it allows them to sit back and pick their counter attacking spots. The shit they are doing would not work against Juan, Michel Bastos and Maicon. Podolski, Ozil and Klose would not outrun the Brazilian defence.

This game would play out how every Brazil Europe game plays out. Brazil would play their 4 corners game, bring the backline to the center circle and pin the Nazi in their own half. Every time the Wehrmact tried to run, the Brazilian defence would outsprint them to the ball, get thething and feed to their fowards. Brazil would win the game 2-0 or 3-1.

The shit the Krauts have done, has worked against slow footed defenders like Terry, Heinze and Demichelis. The Argentines were being found in situations where they were outnumbered by Podolski and Ozil and Klose.

Let them try that shit against Ghana, Cameroon on Nigeria. We may fuck up with out tactics in the middle, but if wanted to, we could always outrun them back to our goal... if we wanted to ... which in the case of Cameroon and Nigeria, evidently is no longer a foregone conclusion...(remember Rommedahl outrunning the Cameroonian defence, what sort of shit was that?)

Dunga was putting all of his hope on Kaka. I guess Dunga thought Kaka was gonna manhandle the midfield or something. Kaka is overrated.

Ronaldinho is a seasoned veteran in terms of International play who is only 30 years old! I guarantee you, that he would've made things happen against the Netherlands and every other team in the cup. Dunga was absolutely STUPID to leave him out of the Roster, STUPID!

kaka isnt overrated he just had one bad season where he was out of form with real madrid. he dont fit into their system because its all based on ronaldo.

ronaldinho and maico were the two hottest brazilian players toward the seasons end. ronaldinho isnt going to be the player he was and thats the problem people have realizing. hes not going to be like that no more but he creats alot of scoring opportunities when hes in milian and thats well enough to be an effective player on the squad. his last game he sent a message to dunga by scoring two goals.

dunga is a real stubborn stupid coach. i knew brazil was going to lose. if im going to lose i rather lose with my big guns instead of my little guns. ppl saying this wc lost is worse than the one in 06 and i kninda agree.

please dont get me started on felipe melo ninjadidnt do nothing for juventus but dunga still called him him up:smh::smh::smh:.

As good as they are, they're shells of their club form for Spain. It's hard to see Spain winning this thing with their ineptitude in front of goal.

More importantly, without the compliance of a sympathetic ref who will not penalise them for their flops. Of the remaining group, I think the Wehrmacht look very dangerous when they play from the front. The children of hookers from Amsterdm play slow and ugly football, but as much as they fight among themselves, they have found a way to win, even when they have to cheat, as they did against Brazil....

INIESTA & XAVI

Case Closed!

these guys have been average at best.

Like i said they have been keeping a lot of possesion but that statistic is misleading.

They have hardly been making use of that possession in their opponents half.

If not for the heroics of David Villa, this squad has not really shown anything

That goal of Villa in the last game was far from heroic. He was in the right place at the right time. It was Iniesta that beautifully set up the shot that hit the post the in which Villa was able to rebound into the goal.

Iniesta and Xavi facilitated scoring opportunities.

I still think Germany is gonna beat them though.

I think you are really underestimating the Germanys, while I do think Brazil would beat them it would not be a rout. I would also pick Germany to beat all the African teams handily save for Ghana, I'm glad you did not go all out to say Nigeria would win because we all know that would not happen, lol

Nigeria backs down on soccer ban

101990_news.jpg

BUJA, Nigeria -- Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has dropped a threat to suspend the national soccer team from playing for two years because of its poor World Cup showing and corruption allegations.

In a statement, Jonathan's office said the decision came after a meeting Monday with the Nigeria Football Federation. The federation's executive committee fired the group's president and vice president Sunday in an effort to appease Jonathan.

The federation "assured the president of their commitment" to building a national soccer program "that will bring glory, rather than consistent embarrassment to Nigeria on the world stage," the statement read.

FIFA did not immediately comment. It had set a deadline for the Nigerian government to drop its suspension plans by 6 p.m. local time, or its soccer programs would face even harsher sanctions than those Jonathan threatened to impose.

FIFA regulations forbid governments from interfering in national soccer federations, and it has suspended countries for breaking the rules -- a ban that extends to club teams, referees and officials.

A presidential spokesman announced last Wednesday that Jonathan wanted the Super Eagles suspended for two years to allow Nigerian soccer to be restructured after it left the World Cup with just one point over three matches.

Earlier Monday, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said at a news conference that his organization has taken "all adequate steps" to resolve the dispute.

"We do hope that everything comes back to normal," Blatter said.

FIFA dispatched Nigeria's most senior soccer official -- Amos Adamu, a member of its 24-man ruling executive -- to talk with the government.

Nigeria is due to send a women's under-20 team to its World Cup, which kicks off next week in Germany.

Nigerian club Heartland also stood to lose its place in the African Champions League if it could not play a home game against Egypt's Al-Ahly scheduled next week.

The dispute between Nigeria and FIFA flared after the national team returned from a disappointing tournament in South Africa.

Nigeria earned a 2-2 draw with South Korea in its final game. But it lost to Argentina 1-0 in its Group B opener and fell to Greece 2-1 in a game that turned on the first-half ejection of midfielder Sani Kaita.

The suspension threat by Nigeria's government also followed corruption allegations that plagued the team before the World Cup. Presidential spokesman Ima Niboro said last week that all funds directed toward the Nigeria Football Federation would be examined and "all those found wanting will be sanctioned."

FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot could not confirm on Monday if Nigeria's federation had yet been paid any of the $8 million prize money it is due from FIFA for taking part in the World Cup.

FIFA names referees for semifinals

JOHANNESBURG -- Ravshan Irmatov and Viktor Kassai will referee the World Cup semifinals, FIFA said on Monday.

Uzbekistan's Irmatov will take charge of the Netherlands-Uruguay match at Cape Town on Tuesday for his fifth match of the finals.

The 32-year-old Irmatov also refereed the Germany-Argentina quarterfinal on Saturday, and the opening match between South Africa and Mexico. He has yet to issue a red card or award a penalty in the tournament.

Kassai will officiate the Germany-Spain match at Durban on Wednesday for his fourth assignment.

The 34-year-old Hungarian also has yet to eject a player at the World Cup, and has awarded just one penalty -- converted by Landon Donovan for the United States in its 2-1 second-round defeat after extra-time against Ghana.

FIFA said it has retained 10 referees and their teams of two assistants for the rest of the tournament, including top Europeans Howard Webb from England and Belgium's Frank de Bleeckere.

Referees for Sunday's final at Soccer City and the third-place match, to be played Saturday in Port Elizabeth, will be named after the semifinals.

Linesman: Missing goal 'unfortunate'

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- The Uruguayan linesman who failed to see that a shot from England midfielder Frank Lampard crossed the goal line against Germany at the World Cup has described the error as "unfortunate."

Mauricio Espinosa was quoted Monday in the Uruguayan newspaper El Pais that "it was unfortunate, a very fast ball that we couldn't see as it went into the goal despite my positioning being correct."

He said the realization he'd made a mistake left a "very bitter" feeling, but that there was no option now but to "get on with things" as "these are things that can happen in football."

Germany went on to beat England 4-1 in the round of 16 match. The goal that wasn't awarded would have brought tied the game at 2-2 late in the first half, likely changing the strategy of both teams.

Loew: Spain is Germany's toughest test

ERASMIA, South Africa -- Germany coach Joachim Loew thinks the only way to beat Spain is to get them to defeat themselves.

Spain has been the most consistent national soccer team of the past two or three years, and is the favorite to win the World Cup title, Loew said Monday, two days before the Germans and Spanish meet in a tournament semifinal in Durban.

But he believes Germany can overcome any opponent, including a Spain team with a passing game he praised as a model for his own style.

"They make almost no mistakes but we have to force them into making errors," said Loew, who devised great gameplans to beat England and Argentina, seizing on the teams' defensive liabilities.

Now comes Spain, which beat Germany 1-0 in the final of the 2008 European Championship.

"We are not speaking of revenge, that hasn't been on my mind at all," Loew said. "We lost the final in 2008 because we were beaten by the best team of the time.

"But we have hope that we can win. For me, Spain is the favorite for the title. ... Spain has not one Messi, but several Messis who can decide a game."

Loew was referring to Argentina star Lionel Messi, who was virtually shut out of the game when Germany routed the Albiceleste 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Germany also eliminated England 4-1 and has scored the most goals of any team in South Africa -- 13.

Before the Argentina game, Germany engaged in a little trash-talking. This time, the messages from the German camp have been praise for the opponent and confidence in their own abilities.

"Spain is very strong as a unit, both in offense and defense. They have several players who can decide games and tactically they are very good," he said. "But at the moment we are capable of beating everyone."

Loew said Germany's technical skills allow the team to dominate for the entire game.

"We always try to be a constant offensive threat and to [impress] with our skills," Loew said. "And Spanish football also places a lot of importance on technical skill. Their passing game is a celebration of football and how easy they make it look is a a model for me."

Loew said the mood in the team was very good, "but not euphoric" after its convincing wins against England and Argentina.

Germany will be missing Thomas Mueller, who has four goals but is suspended for the match. Backup striker Cacau remains questionable with a back problem.

The semifinal will feature two of the leading scorers of the tournament, David Villa of Spain with five and Germany's Miroslav Klose with four.

Loew said the players were too different to compare, "but both have shown great finishing qualities."

Klose needs one goal to pull even with Brazil's Ronaldo as the top World Cup scorer of all time with 15.

While dangerous, Villa is not Spain's only threat, Loew said, singling out a midfield led by Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

"They control the ball so well, you have to keep them under constant pressure," Loew said.

Germany's standout central midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger, says Spain has the making of a top team because it can win even when it does not play at its best.

"They such great skills and they control the tempo so well," he said.

Schweinsteiger also said that Germany was not looking for revenge.

"We have different players now, while Spain is almost the same. Maybe they have not shone at the tournament, but they have played very strongly over the past few years," he said. "Spain will be tougher than England or Argentina, but we've shown that we can be very good."

The Germans practiced Monday afternoon, with central defender Arne Friedrich (right foot) and midfielder Sami Khedira (left hamstring) held out of practice. Loew said earlier that all his players were well enough to play.

Spain's Fabregas to play despite injury

POTCHEFSTROOM South Africa -- Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas is ready to play in Wednesday's World Cup semifinal match against Germany despite continuing pain in his shoulder.

Fabregas told Spanish media he may need a painkilling injection into his shoulder so he can be available for the semifinal at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Fabregas told the Spanish sports daily Sport that the sore shoulder was "painful" but he is "ready to get an injection in order to play."

Fabregas stopped practice early Sunday as a precaution after hurting his shoulder in Spain's 1-0 quarterfinal win over Paraguay. Fabregas replaced Fernando Torres after 56 minutes.

Spain would not say which shoulder was bothering Fabregas.

Maradona unsure over Argentina future

CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- Diego Maradona cast doubt about his future as Argentina coach Saturday, saying he'd been drained of all his energy in a 4-0 loss to Germany -- an experience he likened to being floored by Muhammad Ali.

"I may leave tomorrow, but I'd like that these boys continue showing who they are and keep playing real Argentina football," said Maradona, looking exhausted and heartbroken.

Asked to clarify his plans, he said "I'll have to think carefully about it ... and talk with my family, and the players. There are many issues here."

Maradona, widely considered Argentina's all-time greatest player, was derided back home before the tournament for leading the team by instinct and emotion rather than tactics. He attacked at his critics with a stream of profanities when Argentina qualified for the World Cup at the last minute.

After three group stage victories and a convincing 3-1 win over Mexico in the round of 16, even his detractors began questioning whether they had underestimated his coaching abilities.

Maradona's affectionate hugs and go-get-'em pep talks seemed to yield better results than the tactical advice handed out by more serious coaches like England's Fabio Capello.

Then Germany came along.

Argentina and Maradona didn't know how to respond when Thomas Mueller's early goal left the South Americans trailing for the first time in the tournament.

Maradona made no changes at halftime, even though his team had struggled throughout the first half, losing possession as soon as it crossed into the German area. He sent on midfielder Javier Pastore for defender Nicolas Otamendi after Germany went up 2-0 and was getting ready to further boost the attack with striker Sergio Aguero when Arne Friedrich made it 3-0.

With the game virtually over, Maradona hugged Aguero -- his son-in-law -- and clung to him as the Germans celebrated.

"This is the most difficult experience of my life, because to (lose) in front of so many good players, such good people, such good professionals is like getting punched by Muhammad Ali," he said. "I don't have any energy left."

He said he'd only felt similar emotions in life on the day he retired from soccer.

Still, Maradona didn't accept any blame for the crushing defeat, and lashed out at a reporter who questioned whether his critics in Argentina might be satisfied with the loss.

"Are you joking," he said. "This is a country where you live and breathe football. I don't think that anyone will be happy when the team loses 4-0."

FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or awards to be combined

63268_news.jpg

The FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or awards are to be combined to make one trophy to recognise the finest footballer in the sport, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has revealed.

Blatter announced the change on Monday after the game's governing body and France Football, who founded the original Ballon d'Or award ('Golden Ball') - agreed to join forces. A single accolade - set to be named the FIFA Ballon d’Or - will be handed to the first recipient of the prize on January 10, 2011 in a ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland.

Speaking to reporters in South Africa, the 74-year-old said: “The winner is football because as of January of next year we will have one single trophy for the best player in the world and this will be the Golden Ball.”

A FIFA statement later confirmed, "the winner will be chosen by the coaches and captains from the national teams, as well as by the media."

The Ballon d'Or has been awarded since 1956, with FIFA following suit in 1991. Barcelona and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi currently holds both titles after stellar performances in 2009.

Sergio Ramos believes Mourinho should and will acquire Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard

102993_hp.jpg

60231_news.jpg

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos is adamant that new manager Jose Mourinho will be able to bring Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole to the Bernabeu this summer.

The 24-year-old full-back believes that the England internationals will emulate their compatriots David Beckham and Michael Owen and join Real Madrid.

Mourinho was able to sign Cole from Arsenal when he was in charge at Chelsea and is a long-time admirer of Gerrard; Ramos believes that the Treble-winning manager should sign both Englishmen.

“We are a club that is always looking to improve by adding the best players in the world,” Ramos told The Daily Star.

“We have a proven record of signing English players – with David and Michael – and it would not surprise me at all if our two new arrivals this summer were English. Ashley Cole is a terrific player.

“For me, he is by far the best left-back in the world and, along with Drogba, Chelsea’s best player.

“A change might be what he is looking for. When a player is the best in his position in the world and doesn’t play for Real Madrid, you have to consider it a waste.

“He has done everything in England for Arsenal and Chelsea. It’s now time for him to come and win La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho.”

“I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo about him – and he told me Cole is the toughest defender he has ever played against.

“That’s quite a compliment coming from the world’s best player and he is exactly the sort of player we want.”

In the case of Gerrard, Ramos believes that Liverpool’s difficulties, both financially and on the field, will be important in the race to bring Gerrard to Spain.

“I think Madrid’s admiration of Steven Gerrard is not a secret.

“He is at the point now where he needs to win things. I can guarantee that under this Real Madrid set-up he will win things.

“I really think both of them are Real Madrid-bound.”

Nigeria should have stood up to Fifa. This is a fight they would have won in a court of law.

Like I previously stated, Holland will win the world cup.

Discuss.

I like the Netherlands, but their attack is too slow and at times limp for lack of a better term. They only exited Brasil because of a miscommunication between Cesar and his defender. If that goal doesn't land, one can only wonder what the landscape of the match becomes. My money says it stays the same for the Netherlands, and Brasil pull away 2, 3-0.

Again, I do like dutch football on it's better days, but of the 4 teams left I can't see any of them against the Germans.

DJ, Holland are doing something right if they are challenging for world honours every time they play. If you want to have a look at the dutch system of grooming their young players, have a look at the Ajax youth team.

If any team in the world wants to learn a youth system, you can't go wrong with this team.

On the scale of world football, for a country which has only 13 million people living there, they must be doing something right.

Oh absolutely. I'm not saying that dutch football is garbage by no means. They've always been there right to the very end, but around this time seems to be their historical exiting place. What I really like about the dutch are their mix of youth and experience. They've got a really good mix of the two, so it could work out in their favour, but I feel as though they're missing one more key man in the midfield strike. A solid attacking mid to help out Wesley just a little more.

If you think that holland is in the semis because of the quality of their game you need to have you vision check, maybe taking lessons from italian football will be a better explanation.
Flopping and diving had become the new tactical offensive weapons, let's see what's next.

If that is the case, tell me a team still playing in the world cup that didn't do this? Quality of football is something that Holland do possess.

Like I said, form is temporary, class is permanent.

The wing play of Germany, not the midfield is what is reaping dividends for them.

You have a higher opinion of the Brazilian defense than I do.

Brazil had the best defence in the tournament. Robert Martinez, Ruud Gullit, Klinsman and that irritating Welsh who is on ESPN unanimously concurred on the issue. The goals that children of hookers scored were from set plays.. They were not run of plays goals like Nazi scored against England or the fascista from Buenos Aires...The Brazilians play excellent defence and they will always have two people between the ball carrier and the next person on the team. Plus since they have quicker feet than everyone else, they are excellent at pickpocketing the ball. Their problem came in midfield. They did not have an iniesta or Xavi otherwise they would have been scoring 4 goals in every game with opportunists like Robinho, Kaka and Fabiano prowling ... If they had had Ze Roberto and Dinho, they would be playing and destroying Uruguay tomorrow; and even with that flawed team, they should have been playing tomorrow had the ref done his job.
