In reality, Kobe, and Lebron are small forwards too. Small forwards/shooting guards is a complex situation. You rather have a tall shooting guard than an undersized one right?

Lebron is a small foward

Butler us not athletic enough to play shooting guard much like josh howard...they are true small fowards

Allen for Martin?

Though team president Danny Ainge has publicly ridiculed the Allen trade reports, several NBA executives told CBSSports.com that the Celtics have been actively trying to parlay Allen's $19.7 million expiring contract into an asset that could keep them in the mix during the upcoming playoffs and also help them for the next several seasons. The most recent inquiry, sources say, involved Sacramento sharpshooter Kevin Martin, who'd be a good fit with Boston's remaining core. Kings officials might be talked out of their reluctance to deal Martin if they could pry a prolific big man out of a third team brought into the discussions or in a separate transaction before the deadline.

If the Celtics kept Allen and let his contract come off the books, they'd still be over the cap this summer with no avenues besides sign-and-trades to acquire a starting shooting guard. That's why Boston also has expressed interest in the Bulls' Kirk Hinrich, an excellent defender and ball-handler who would give the Celtics a starting two guard next season at $9 million and in 2011-12 at $8 million. The Bulls' motivation would be cap relief.

Martin watch

League sources say Dallas remains among the teams hoping the Kings change their stance regarding trading shooting guard Kevin Martin, and the slim chances at a deal can only be aided by each team's recent play.

The Mavericks have lost four of their past five games, including Friday's loss to lowly Minnesota. The Kings have lost 19 of 22 with Martin continuing to struggle and chemistry with his teammates clearly an issue.

Any deal sending Martin to the Mavericks would likely have to involve a third team. Additionally, sources say Minnesota has considered adding Martin to its backcourt. It's not known, however, whether Timberwolves general manager David Kahn would trade either member of his formidable frontcourt – Al Jefferson or Kevin Love.

Asked about Jefferson in late January, Kahn told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan he wouldn't trade Jefferson unless "someone calls up with a deal that's so preposterously one-sided, we'd have to do it."

Rumor mill

-- Multiple sources say the Cavs will stand pat at the trade deadline unless they are overwhelmed by a deal. Wizards forward Antawn Jamison might be the only way to truly get their attention.

-- Forward/center Troy Murphy might be with the Pacers all season unless the front office drops its demands of getting Zydrunas Ilgauskas, J.J. Hickson and multiple draft picks in return. That's absurd.

-- The Celtics would like to move guard Ray Allen's $19 million expiring contract. The proposed deal that would send him to the Bulls for forward Tyrus Thomas and guard Kirk Hinrich has some legs. There's no shot the Celtics can get Warriors guard Monta Ellis for Allen.

-- The Pistons have major issues and would love to move guard Rip Hamilton or forward Tayshaun Prince. Hamilton signed a three-year extension last year, which is a major sticking point with potential teams.

that would put the celtics right back in the mix

I think it would also but Martin put up great numbers on a bad team so will he be able to work well with a winning team.

Vince Carter is a great player on a bad team but looks like shit this year for Orlando. Martin can't be that bad though, nobody can.

He doesn't take a load of shots when you look at his scoring and he gets to the line

I think he would be a good fit to replace Allen there

I hope the Mavs get him though or Iggy

Dont really want Butler cuz its not that good of a fit

I read today either the Mavs or Rockets are at the yop of the hunt to get him according to david aldridge

Trade News

A high-level source involved in the Suns’ strategizing estimated that Stoudemire has a “30 percent chance” of being traded. His situation is the most intriguing of all the star players who could be moved by Feb. 18, given his status as an All-Star starter. The plot only became more interesting with Stoudemire’s recent comments/head fake that he’s leaning toward not exercising the early termination option in his contract, which would pay him $17.7 million next season. Some team executives believe Stoudemire, surmising that opting in would be the best move if Stoudemire doesn’t believe max money will be there for him this summer.

Team executives differ widely in their assessment Marcus Camby’s availability, with some convinced Camby’s gone and others equally convinced he’s going nowhere. The truth is somewhere in between. A person familiar with the Clippers’ internal discussions said the team would move Camby and his $7.65 million contract only in a deal that would yield a significant player who could help them next season – or the cap space to sign one. The Clips are a small deal away from clearing the $15-$16 million necessary to sign a max player. If they can’t improve their 2010-11 position dramatically, Camby stays. Two of Camby’s former teams, the Nuggets and Knicks, are intrigued by the possibility of bringing him back for an encore.

Another active buyer in trade talks, the Mavericks, haven’t pushed hard for Kevin Martin in their conversations with Sacramento, sources say. That’s an indication that the Mavs are focused on another wing who’d fit their needs – Washington’s Caron Butler. How aggressively the Wizards look to unload contracts as they try to pick up the pieces from Gilbert Arenas’ suspension depends on how a fundamental internal disagreement is resolved. Some elements of the Wizards’ power structure favor “completely blowing it up,” according to one source, while others are holding out for a more patient approach. “How badly does Dallas want Caron Butler?” one rival executive said. “Washington will find out.” The Mavs have not been pushing for Antawn Jamison in their talks with the Wizards, believing they have enough 30-somethings on the roster.

If the Wizards take the “blowing it up” route, their exploratory conversations with Houston involving Tracy McGrady would become more serious. But a high-level source familiar with the situation said T-Mac’s best chance to play again this season is in New York, which would willingly take on his $23 million expiring contract if it meant clearing some 2010-11 money off the books. The Knicks aren’t willing to part with anything Houston would want, however, so a third team would need to be recruited.

Despite their active posture in trade talks, the Sixers aren’t willing to do strictly a financial deal for Iguodala. Thus, they’re not interested in McGrady alone, but instead are pushing for legit value in return.

Miami and Charlotte remain in the mix with the Rockets and Trail Blazers for Wizards center Brendan Haywood. The Blazers continue to steadfastly reject any scenario that includes Rudy Fernandez or Nicolas Batum.

Spurs’ patience with Jefferson running low

Jefferson is smart and mature, and had a young career that benefited incredibly from Jason Kidd feeding him the ball and winning him a $78 million contract from the Nets. League sources say the Spurs have raised his name in trades talks but found out quickly there’s no market for him and his contract.

Together, Jefferson and the Spurs have to make this work. They have to find a way. The Spurs don’t want to bid on Amar’e Stoudemire. They can’t pry Chris Bosh out of Toronto. Jefferson takes a long look around the NBA and still believes he has time to resurrect himself out of that trade-bust category. Duncan is getting older, and Ginobili isn’t so fleet, and it isn’t like the Spurs don’t have issues beyond him. Yet Jefferson understands he was brought here to be the hellacious young star who had grown fast in New Jersey, who went to the NBA Finals twice, who understood what it took to chase championships.

“Across the whole league, you’ve got a lot of guys going to different situations,” Jefferson said. “Vince in Orlando. Hedo [Turkoglu] in Toronto. Rasheed [Wallace] in Boston. All of them want to make an impact and it’s not happening everywhere.”

The Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats are discussing a trade centered around Glen Davis and D.J. Augustin, according to league sources.

The sources cautioned that nothing is imminent, but said the clubs are having discussions.

The Bobcats have been searching for a power forward, and the 6-foot-9 Davis could be their man. The Celtics, meanwhile, have been longing for a backup point guard, and Augustin, who's fallen out of favor with Charlotte coach Larry Brown, would be more than adequate.

A straight-up trade would not work because Davis is a base-year compensation player, so other players would have to be involved to meet the financial requirements. That could be a sticking point in the deal.

While teams don't typically trade big for small, Boston is a bit aggravated with Davis, who's had a few off-the-court problems this season. Most notably, he missed the first 27 games of the season after breaking his thumb in an early morning scuffle with a friend.

The Celtics have been rumored to be exploring deals for Ray Allen, and while league sources insist the word "shopping'' is too strong, they say the shooting guard is definitely available. Few believe he'll be traded before the Feb. 18 deadline, though, because the Celtics aren't likely to get a better player in return

Heard Ric Bucher say this on ESPN radio also ... He said this is Larry Brown syndrome-- he was very high on drafting Augustin and now wants to be rid of him-- and his example was that at Pacers coach he wanted to get rid of him and trade him for Derrick Coleman and then he became the 76ers coach and wanted to trade Coleman for Smits.

There is a method to Larry Brown's madness when it comes to trading players right and left. That said this would be a good deal for the Celtics, because they need to get some young legs down there because the Big 3 are the Slow 3 right now. There is some saying they might be trying to move Ray Allen as well.

Knicks discuss deal for McGrady

The Houston Rockets are in the discussion stages of a complicated, three-team trade that would send Tracy McGrady to the New York Knicks, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The centerpieces of the trade would include the Washington Wizards shipping forward Caron Butler and center
Brendan Haywood to the Rockets. The Knicks would send Al Harrington to the Wizards. For the Wizards’ part,
they would still need another player, as well as a draft pick and cash to make this a workable scenario, sources said.

Other players and contracts would still need to be agreed upon for a deal to come together, but there is a framework to the discussions.

The Rockets have been peddling McGrady’s expiring contract of $23 million since exiling him in late December.

Heat continue to pursue Stoudemire

Miami Heat president Pat Riley has emerged as one of the most determined pursuers of Phoenix Suns forward Amar’e Stoudemire, proposing several different packages that make available any of his players short of Dwyane Wade, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Heat have discussed several scenarios with the Suns, including packages that include combinations of young players Michael Beasley, Dorell Wright) and expiring contracts (Jermaine O’Neal and Quentin Richardson). The Heat are also willing to part with their 2010 first-round draft pick.

”Nobody is pushing harder on this than Riley,” one league source said.

The Suns are believed to be in discussions with as many as six teams, although more may yet show themselves before the Feb. 18 trade deadline. The Philadelphia 76ers remain involved, but have rejected the Suns’ attempts to attach guard Jason Richardson
to a larger package that would include Samuel Dalembert and Andre Iguodala.

League sources say the Sacramento Kings also have discussed a package that would include sending Kevin Martin to the Suns for Stoudemire.

I would love the knicks to get t-mac... 23 mil off the cap...

They would end up with either $11 million by including Curry or $6.8 million by including Jeffries. Harrington is already going to be a free agent so that $10 million is coming off no matter what.

Their either trying to include one of them in a trade so they have the opportunity to two sign two max players.

yeah the knicks would have to send a 2nd player who likely will be jefferies.
curry is being bitter n wont opt out even tho he knows he wont play again for the knicks.

Too bad larry traded augustin to celts i woulda traded lee to the bobcats for augustin and their 1st.

coulda got a pg and moved some cap...tho i want toney douglass to play he might b the pg answer.

any updates on moving bynum? that dudes a joke!

He's a joke at 22?

He's the fourth option on the team so there's no way he's going to be a consistent scorer. Thats no excuse for him not playing great defense or rebounding. He does pout a lot but I think thats to be expected with a young kid that doesn't get his way but he already signed a contract extension so even if he's unhappy he's stuck so he needs to just get over it. He should focus on improving his game the next three years then when Kobe, Pau, Lamar & Ron are all around 33 years old he'll only be 25 and should be ready to take over.

I thought i heard rumors of him(bynum) getting traded, for a big man or is there any news on them pulling another big man from another team... all they need is def & rebounding.. wish rodman could still move... lol

There were rumors about Bynum for Bosh but I don't think it will happen by the trade deadline. If this happens it may happen this offseason with a sign and trade.

Bulls not lacking for Thomas suitors

Everyone understood Chicago executives are now determined to move Thomas, and a clear price has been established for suitors: Expiring contracts and a 2010 or future first-round draft pick, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Bulls are also exploring ways to package Thomas with guard Kirk Hinrich to free themselves of his
contract.

The Charlotte Bobcats bid Acie Law, Flip Murray and their 2010 first-round pick, a league executive said. The Bobcats have been searching for a long, athletic forward like Thomas, the fourth pick in the 2007 draft, and are expected to be aggressive pursuers. Portland Trail Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard made an offer they’ll have to improve upon to be taken seriously – one of his expiring contracts (Steve Blake or Travis Outlaw) and two future second-round draft picks.

The New York Knicks, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and New Orleans Hornets are among the multiple teams who’ve spoken to Chicago about Thomas. The Bulls are telling people that they have several teams willing to offer first-round picks – in 2010 or beyond.

Bulls management is telling teams they expect to take the bidding right to the Feb. 18 deadline. The Bulls want to avoid the possibility of Thomas accepting a $6.2 million qualifying offer on the eve of this summer’s free agency, which would deliver a major dent to their salary-cap space. Thomas, 23, will be a restricted free agent this summer.

The Bulls are desperate to recruit Miami’s Dwyane Wade

back to his hometown, but one source familiar with Wade’s thinking says he’s ”far less” inclined to bolt Miami unless Chicago has the ability to sign a ”significant” free agent to join him.

Wizards, Celts in swap talks
Adrian Wojnarowski

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports 35 minutes ago

In a dramatic move that would resuscitate their fading championship hopes, the Boston Celtics are discussing a deal with the Washington Wizards for forwards Antawn Jamison(notes) and Caron Butler(notes), league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday.

The proposed deal would send the expiring contracts of Ray Allen(notes), Brian Scalabrine(notes) and J.R. Giddens(notes) to the Wizards, a move that would signal the start of Washington’s rebuilding process.

The trade isn’t imminent, but talks have progressed and Celtics GM Danny Ainge has positioned his organization to make one of the boldest trade deadline moves in years. For the Celtics, ownership would have to agree to take on an additional $24 million in salary next season between Jamison and Butler. Jamison makes more than $15 million in 2011-12, but most owners are discounting those salaries because of an assumption that there will be a labor lockout and some, if not all, of that money will never be paid to the players.

Sources expected the two teams to talk further Friday and throughout the weekend in Dallas.

Both Boston and Washington still have discussions with several teams in the works, including a potential Wizards-Mavericks deal that league sources insisted was discussed well into Thursday night in Dallas.

Washington has offered Butler and DeShawn Stevenson(notes) for the Mavericks’ Josh Howard(notes) and a small expiring contract. There were strong signals on late Thursday that deal was getting close, but one source with knowledge of the talks said that Mavs owner Mark Cuban wasn’t prepared to commit to the move and wanted to keep shopping.

For now, that hesitancy leaves open the possibility of Boston’s aging core regaining its footing as a championship contender. Sources insist that Boston’s ownership is in an aggressive mode and determined to back Ainge in his desire to get younger and more athletic without sacrificing the short term for the long term. Boston desperately needs quickness on its frontline, and Jamison, a 6-foot-9 forward, and Butler, a 6-7 swingman, are players with All-Star pedigrees. With the unstable knee of Kevin Garnett(notes) and shoddy play of Rasheed Wallace(notes), this move could potentially give the Celtics the ability to fortify its frontcourt with two of the most desired players on the trade market.

Boston has swooned to fourth in the Eastern Conference, stumbling into the All-Star break with turmoil surrounding the team. The Celtics are 32-18, and just four games ahead of the surging Toronto Raptors in the Atlantic Division.

The possibility of Boston prying Jamison out of Washington has to be unsettling to the Cleveland Cavaliers. GM Danny Ferry has coveted Jamison for two years, and has made him his No. 1 priority at the trade deadline. The Cavaliers have several contingency plans for losing out on Jamison – topped with Indiana’s Troy Murphy(notes) – but losing Jamison to conference rival Boston would be particularly piercing for the Cavs.

Washington is still part of a lingering, but stalled three-team discussion with New York and Houston that would send Tracy McGrady(notes) to the Knicks, Al Harrington(notes) and Larry Hughes(notes) to the Wizards and Caron Butler and possibly Mike Miller(notes) to the Houston Rockets.

I thought I had seen him play enough and already knew this but would somebody please explain caron butlers game to me?

I just seems like the Celtics(pierce) and Mavs(Marion) would be doubling up here

The thing with this trade is even if Washington makes this move and gets all of this salary cap space, who do they plan on signing? No top free agents are going to want to go there.

I can see the Magic trading Jamison, releasing Gilbert this offseason and starting over with Butler but trading both of them doesn't make sense to me.
