Mike Richards (and Mayim Bialik) may be the new permanent hosts of Jeopardy, but a new poll revealed that as far as fans of the show are concerned, LeVar Burton is still the frontrunner.
A Morning Consult poll shared by Mediaite revealed that Burton was the clear first choice for a permanent hosting position, receiving 14 percent of the votes. Bialik came in a close second with 13 percent and Richards only received 3 percent of votes.

"More than half of Jeopardy! viewers (54 percent) said the new hosts made them neither more nor less interested in watching the game show, according to a Morning Consult survey conducted Aug. 13-16," Mediaite reported. "About 1 in 3 viewers (32 percent) said they were more interested in tuning in, while 14 percent said the casting choices made them less interested."

Following Alex Trebek's passing last year, the popular game show implemented a roster of rotating hosts from the entertainment industry including Burton, Bialik, Richards, Katie Couric, Aaron Rodgers, Anderson Cooper, Robin Roberts, Dr. Mehmet Oz, and former Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings. Richards succeeded in nabbing the job with Bialik taking on hosting duties for primetime specials and spin-off episodes.
The announcement hasn't been without controversy — in addition to the overwhelming shock from fans that Burton was passed over for a hosting position, Richards had to contend with the resurfacing of multiple discrimination lawsuits relating to his time as executive producer of The Price Is Right. The Morning Consult poll found that only 18 percent of the survey responders had heard about the allegations. Once they became aware of them, 32 percent still said Richards deserved a chance to host while 25 percent thought he didn't.
Richards recently addressed the allegations to the Jeopardy staff directly in a memo stating, "The way in which my comments and actions have been characterized in these complaints does not reflect the reality of who I am or how we worked together on The Price Is Right."
Representatives for Jeopardy didn't immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

‘Jeopardy!’ fans wanted LeVar Burton, not Mike Richards to replace Alex Trebek: poll
By KARU F. DANIELS

Mike Richards was the wrong answer, “Jeopardy!” fans say.
If it was up to fans of the iconic game show, LeVar Burton would have been selected to succeed Alex Trebek as the game show’s host, not Richards.

A new Morning Consult poll has found that Burton the 64-year-old “Star Trek” actor received 14% of the votes, with just 3% throwing their support behind newly chosen host Richards to permanently replace the late Alex Trebek.

Coming in second place after Burton was “The Big Bang Theory” actress and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik with 13%.

Last week, Sony Pictures Television announced that Richards, who served as the show’s executive producer, would become the new host, with Bialik taking the over during prime-time and spinoff “Jeopardy!” specials, including the upcoming “Jeopardy! National College Championship.”

Fans prefer LeVar Burton (left) to Mike Richards as the replacement for the late Alex Trebek (inset) as the host of "Jeopardy."
The decision followed months of tryouts by well-known rotating guest hosts, from former “Jeopardy!” champ Ken Jennings and morning show host Robin Roberts to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker.
Jennings received 12% of the vote as the No. 1 choice to be the next host.

Burton, the “Roots” star who went on to capture millions of children’s hearts as the multiple Emmy Award-winning host of “Reading Rainbow,” got a shot at the gig after openly campaigning on social media.
More than 260,000 hopeful fans signed a petition to make him the new host of “Jeopardy!” but show brass thought otherwise.

The ratings sagged during his tryout period, which coincided with the start of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Richards is not new to the game show business. The 46-year-old Burbank, Calif., native’s credits includes hosting “The Pyramid” and “Beauty and the Geek,” as well as serving as executive producer of “The Price Is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal.”
Richards was recently the center of controversy when reports surfaced about multiple lawsuits launched by models on the show alleging sexual harassment, wrongful termination and insensitivity around an employee’s pregnancy during his tenure as executive producer of “The Price is Right.”
“I want you all to know that the way in which my comments and actions have been characterized in these complaints does not reflect the reality of who I am or how we worked together on ‘The Price is Right,’” Richards wrote to “Jeopardy!” staffers in response to the attention surrounding the lawsuits, which model Brandi Cochran — who claimed she was discriminated against due to her pregnancy — was awarded $7.7 million in damages.

During an interview on ‘Objectified,’ Trebek suggested attorney and CNN legal analyst Laura Coates to host “Jeopardy!” if the producers decided to hire a woman to replace him.
Los Angeles Kings play-by-play announcer Alex Faust and Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz was also who thought should be considered.
Burton was hopeful that someone of color be chosen.
“‘Jeopardy!’ occupies a singular place in American culture. To have a person of color or a marginalized person standing behind that podium is good for America. It means something. It’s a milestone marker on this journey toward wholeness that the great American experiment is supposed to be about,” he said during an Esquire interview.

Lower Ratings Where?: Poll Shows LeVar Burton Was ‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Top Pick For Permanent Host

After much social media hype around LeVar Burton being the new host of Jeopardy, his guest hosting gig wasn’t received that well. When Burton fill in as the guest host from July 26 to July 30, the game show had the lowest ratings ever among all the guest hosts thus far. According to Newsweek, Nielsen Media Research shows that only 4.4 of the Jeopardy! audience tuned in to watch Burton.
These ratings are disappointing, considering more than 267,000 people signed a Change.org petition urging the network to bring the Reading Rainbow host onboard. One factor that may have affected viewership was that his week serving as guest host was airing the same time as the Tokyo Olympics.

The guest host with the best ratings is Ken Jennings, a popular Jeopardy! contestant whose ratings soared to a 6.1 while he was guest hosting the show for six weeks straight. However, Jennings was not the choice for the permanent host. It was recently announced that Jeopardy!’s executive producer Mike Richards would be successor to the late Alex Trebek. Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik was also selected as a second host and will be seen on Jeopardy! primetime and spinoff specials.

Even though Richards is the new host, a recent poll shows that Burton was a favorite among fans of the show. A survey released by Morning Consult stated that when asked who they wanted to be the permanent host of Jeopardy!, Burton received 16% of the votes while Richards only got 3%.
After not being chosen, Burton said he still feels like a winner.

“I have said many times over these past weeks that no matter the outcome, I’ve won,” he tweeted. “The outpouring of love and support from family, friends, and fans alike has been incredible! If love is the ultimate blessing and I believe that it is, I am truly blessed beyond measure.”
Fans were certainly not happy that Burton didn’t get this opportunity, including director Ava DuVernay. In a tweet, she teased taking matters into her own hands and giving Burton a new hosting job herself.

“Me trying to create a show right in this moment for @levarburton to host and make an international hit,” she tweeted along with a GIF.
Someone else on Twitter said the execs behind Jeopardy! didn’t give Burton a fair chance.

“The fix was in from the jump. They didn’t give him a fair shake because they knew he wasn’t getting the job from the beginning. I won’t be watching Jeopardy again.”

Actress Yvette Nicole Brown stated that though she is happy for Mayim Bialik, she feels Burton was wronged.

“Still, the way the search was handled did @levarburton dirty. That’s not on Mayim. That’s on @jeopardy & the powers that be.”
